    You just taught me how to learn morse code by writing all the alphabet letters, their codes and use the codes in a sample sentence. Thank you for this.

  • @macgyver5108
    @macgyver5108 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This method works best for "written" Morse (aka Continuous Wave/CW for short) where you can copy slower, vs _hearing_ or seeing CW which happens a _LOT_ faster! This method focuses your mind on the written/visual aspect, and more on counting individual dits and dahs of CW "dit..." "dah..." "dit..." vs hearing _whole letters_ as one musical sound, like "di-dah-dit" (R) needed for faster copying... That only happens by _hearing_ whole letters.

    Thank you SO much for this! I've wanted to learn Morse code, and as I just acquired my Amateur Extra ham radio license I figured I would give it a go, but I dreaded the process. An hour after watching your video, having never previously used Morse code, I have most of the alphabet down and am tapping out sentences (albeit slowly). GREAT method, I'm going to recommend this to everyone I can!

    GUYS I LEARNED MORSE CODE AND THE RAIN IS TELLING ME TO RUN

  • @valuemastery
    @valuemastery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Maybe to add to this the moste basic rules of using morse code: Make a short pause between letters (people often forget this when doing SOS, it is "... --- ..." and not "...---..."), and a longer pause between words. To undo the last word after you made a mistake (kind of a backspace), use eight dots (........). If you forget the pauses, the receiver will have a hard time figuring out where new letters or new words start.

    • @robj1646
      @robj1646 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Sorry, but not true, that is for the SOS sign. Officially the three letters are sent as one morse character, so without spacing: ...---...

  • @etherealii
    @etherealii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Mnemonics are the best for memorizing things!!! Youre taking info from your short term memory and implanting it into your long term memory because you have a mental picture of what youre trying to memorize

  • @valuemastery
    @valuemastery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +111

    This is a nice strategy for memorizing the codes, amongst others. When I did my license, the school had another very nice method for quickly memorizing codes.
    However, learning morse is not about being able to just memorize the codes. It is about using them fast and without thinking. For this, you'll need many hours of practice, both sending and receiving morse codes. There's no way around it. How much time did you need in school not only to memorize the letters of the alphabet, but to fluently read and write?
    Another example: How difficult is it to memorize all the notes of a scale and the correspondig key on a piano? Can be done in 5 minutes. But how long does it take to actually play the piano from the music sheet, in a way that people would be willing to listen without being paid for it?

    • @kermitthefrog4830
      @kermitthefrog4830 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What's the other method?

    • @valuemastery
      @valuemastery ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@kermitthefrog4830 Not doing it by the common alphabet. We learned groups of related letters/digits. This way you don't have to remember the according morse codes at all. Just remember the groups. For example, how hard is it to remember "EISH5"?
      . E
      .. I
      ... S
      .... H
      ..... 5
      Or "TMOCH0":
      - T
      -- M
      --- O (the letter "o")
      ---- CH
      ----- 0 (zero)
      Or another example: "AUV4"
      .- A
      ..- U
      ...- V
      ....- 4
      The same way you remember "NDB6" and so on. It's quite easy to do. I did the course more than 30 years ago, and after making the license never used it again. And I remember the groups until today.

      It'll bite you in the ass if you ever want to copy Morse in real time though. Sending is one thing, receiving is an entirely different ball game and you'll have to unlearn this video if you want to do the latter at any respectable speed :(

    it’s weird how it’s like the edge of the musical rhythm, memorize the rhythms become a new kind of musical word machine man. it’s just amazing thinking of when they tell us about Morse code in elementary school and they don’t relate it to a musical rhythm and so the idea that a human could do it is just impossible and you just think it must be the most tedious thing that could ever be when it just aint so

You can pick a number and I can recall the object.... give me the object and I can tell you what number it is. Your process makes learning the Morse Code so simple.... speed, not so much. lol. I learned and used the Code in Boy Cubs, Boy Scouts, and Army Cadets.... got a new badge...haha. I'm 71 and have never used it, but the world is getting pretty black, I should practice a bit. Interesting method for learning the patterns. But if you ever want to be able to copy morse code by ear at a reasonable speed, you need to train the sound of each sign and word. Thinking of dots and dashes is not fast enough. This was the best advice I got when starting to learn CW. Although a bit too late. Years later, I am still not as good in copying the few signs I learned using the visual method. The rest and even short words are more or less decoded automatically now.
    Short: Don´t learn dots and dashes because it does more harm than good.

All it takes is to take a minute or two (the more you think abt it the better) to think of something silly and related to what you want to remember and then it's so much harder to forget!
