OMG! I’m 74 years old; growing up with a ham radio operator father who used Morse all the time till he got his general license, I tried to learn code. I was able to learn some if the letters but not all. Your method of assigning phrases to the sound is genius! But I already knew CQ! I’ve heard it so many times. Dah dit dah dit dah dah dit dah! I went to a sort of field trip recently to the college in town (I’m in senior high) and we were meant to be wandering around and seeing all the different rooms… I stayed in the simulator room with the older professor who was tinkering with his radio. Watching him tune into a Morse channel and just start writing in his notebook as he heard the beeps and responding accordingly was fascinating. Very inventive. Maybe at 72 I'll finally learn it. Both my grandfather and father were telegraphers for the Southern Pacific railroad. I never took advantage of that to learn it. FWIW, my father was only so so. He could do about 30 WPM using a bug. My grandfather on the other hand could do between 70 and 80. He could be talking to you while listening to a message. Send the received response, write the message down all the while talking with you. I guess 50 years of doing that helped.
That's awesome, thank God for our grandparents leaving things behind for us, I was never directly taught but I adapted to hearing it in sound, I just can't make out what's being said directly, I'd rather use Morse code and walkie talkies than a 📱, my pap had things from being in the navy (pearl harbor) that he left behind in weird cryptic ways, I have a picture of him doing sign language that makes total sense now, now is a great time to remember what was taught to us finally, 😊

what a great video. My father taught me morse code when I was a child. He and I would practice all the time (great memories). He was a radio-telegraphist in the Argentine marine. then life got in the way and I forgot most of it. Thanks so much for this lesson.
This is great. I just looked at the first method story. If you're having a hard time with it, just add to the end of the story, "And you are left with the chart", because U and R only branch left, so you remember where those are. :)

It makes me so happy when TH-cam suggests me things like this even though I haven’t looked up stuff like this in years but I still have a love for Morse code
Thanks! This helped a ton. I can key Morse at about 20 words per minute now, and I’m going to take my ham license test on Jan 11! Update: Passed my exam! Update 2: Passed my General! Update 3, 8/19/23: I quit ham radio about 8 months ago because the old guys started to overwhelm me with jobs and positions in their club because I'm young. I was running a net, a local meeting on the air, with my now-ex and only a few months after she got her license, they tried to make her president of a decades old club. If you're an old guy, or just a ham operator, please don't be like this. It ruined the hobby for both of us. I have a young online friend who experienced this as well. Just treat us like normal members, no special privileges Doing better now, hope y'all are all well. I still practice morse occasionally.
Changing the tone a bit from all the silly jokes: this is actually a pretty cool way. I've been trying to learn morse for a couple of weeks now, to use it on the air (ham radio) and it's really hard. I'm going to give your approach a try. Thanks for sharing.
I learn random things like this because next time I’m somewhere and code plays I’ll be like “ah okay I know this” and everyone around me will be like “ why do you KNOW this??” And, as I usually do to that question, I will laugh.
I didn't use this video, but--- about a week ago, I learned Morse Code through an app and a website, only the alphabets and numbers. 2 days ago, my bf, our friends, and I, did an escape room; it was the hardest difficulty, an 8/10. There was so many puzzles to do all at once, and one of them--- you guessed it, was Morse Code! I figured it the 4-letter passcode (Ikr very hard, lol), in 10 seconds! We did beat the escape room, and we had only 3:01 minutes left! I saved us a bunch of time just because I randomly decided to learn it LOL. That felt so cool/good to use, hahah. I'm going to remember this story forever xD I never thought I'd be able to use this random skill, too hahah. Thanks for these tips though! Will try and study it this way as well :)

Good morning everyone! This is absolutely imaginative. I want to share that Walter Ong, SJ in an essay "African Talking Drums and Oral Noetics" talks about how the drummers beat out words on their slit-gongs by 'disambiguating' them in context. Your video corroborates this in some way. F here is 'Fetch a fireman'. For the Lokele drummer, moon is 'moon look toward the earth'. Ong's mention of Morse code signals as different from African drum languages led to this search. Thank you Nelson.

There's a video game called Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: a game that relies on communication since one player can only see the bomb and the other player/s have the manual but can't see the bomb. One of the puzzles (known as modules) on the bomb uses morse code so I'm learning Morse so I can hopefully get better at identifying the words on the video game.
Hey! A fellow KTaNE player! A good trick that helped me was memorizing the 6 easiest letters, TMO and EIS. The first three are one, two, and three dashes respectively, and the second three are one, two, and three dots. Knowing 6 letters off the top of your head can really help save time. Hell, even just knowing S and O will do that. I wish you good luck on your bomb defusal endeavors!
Wow. Great first video for me on how to learn Morse code. I'm glad I didn't learn it the harder way first and have to unlearn it. Passed my tech exam earlier this month. Now studying for General. Figured I would try Morse code along the way. Thanks!
I had a friend, long since departed from our world, who coached me when I was learning my CW for licensure. He was amazing. We could be sitting in a room, visiting, chatting about anything, and his radio would be on in the background. As we talked, he was also listening to the morse code in the background, and explaining the conversation to me as well as having a conversation with me about a totally different subject. It was like he had 2 separate auditory systems. He could also tell which of his friends were "talking" using code, by their style, or "hand"....the way they keyed their machine. I noticed that his radio did not have have a microphone attached. He said he hasn't used voice in almost 15 years....Pretty cool guy.
I go to a Vietnamese parish part of a community in the USA called VEYM and we are learning Morse code this year and I am a leader so I’m making help worksheets for them😊
Im getting a lot of recomended videos abt morse code... Should I be worried? Update:I can now understand my microwave, he's been through a lot My printer is telling me to f off ;-;
OMG I finally found this video. I once learnt Morse code using his mnemonics but I couldn't remember some of the letters and I've been searching ever since
Another thing about morse code is that it's also onomatopoeic. A dash is pronounced "dah", and a dot is pronounced "dit". A double dot is "ditty". This is useful not just as a way to speak morse code, but also really helps you interpret while listening. I'm not sure whether it speeds up memorization time, but it certainly seemed to help me. But mostly, I thought it really interesting how "dog did it" sounds just like "dah ditty"
Glad I memorized the entire Morse code language instead of studying for my math test

Just treat us like normal members, no special privileges

I'm going to remember this story forever xD
I never thought I'd be able to use this random skill, too hahah.

You nailed it with D. It's not dot dash but rather dit and dah. I'm still trying to learn, but dits and dahs is how I'm learning. (Ham radio Morse)
I know about that! I noticed the same thing!
