Bait and switch job listings and false job listings should be treated the same as bait and switch advertising and false advertising.
We need more transparency and accountability in job markets. Candidates have been on the losing side of an unlevel playing field for far too long.

It's amazing how a company will layoff people and then a few weeks later hold a job fair. These aren't the kind of people you want to work for, there's no job security. When I was in college, a government contractor came to campus to give us a test and interview the students. The test didn’t really cover anything that we learned in college and some of the questions seemed to be trick questions. When it came for my turn to interview, I asked the interviewer about the test. She just laughed and informed me that she had no plans to hire anybody. She was there only to assess the quality of students. I was a little shocked that a company would do something like that. Of course, the interviewer was not lying and nobody got a job offer.

I went to several job fairs and found out most companies at the job fair are not even hiring. They are just there for facade purposes to make it look like they are helping the community with jobs.
The only serious ones were police departments, military, 911 operators, Disney, Universal, and hotels which they let the person know they hired seasonal.
Every other employer on site was “play pretend”
I figured that out after attending 3 jobs fairs. I asked one of the employers where the site was located and it was a in a totally different city 100 miles away. I thought to myself why is this employer here? There are no relocation packages and the job is not prestigious.

    Hi Life After Layoff,
My personal story is that the place I work for had a senior techops/help desk position available for up to a year. I originally applied for this position but they demanded knowledge of an absolute ton of different stuff that is way beyond that of a help desk position. They promised this position was available and had several of the tech team scramble to try and get this position to the point that it was causing a negatively competitive environment. I personally was promised I would be able to get this after a few months to familiarize myself with their process. The job was sent to India.

  • @richardshutt340
    @richardshutt340 ปีที่แล้ว +50

I used to work for a large Tech company. We would lay off 10% of the workforce each November and rehire soon after. Early days it was a way to target poor performers because the company failed to hold leaders accountable for development, coaching, etc. Then it expanded with the media view that companies did not pay equal to specific demographics and incented C-level to have a particular scorecard that showed their group met or exceeded a specific set of demographics. The layoffs target areas that still need to meet those goals and are promoted or hired to meet the goal.
Interestingly, they changed their job titles to meet the lower pay band but still had the same responsibilities. For example, the role of a front-line manager was paid $75-125k before being laid off; the new hire would be hired as a supervisor with the same responsibilities but at $50k-$75k. The company met its demographic goal and was able to cut costs.

I'm probably a bit older than the commenters here but I remember another scheme these employers pulled 35 years ago which was to post ads in the newspaper (no online crap back then) for "clerical or office work" and then when you went to apply for the job and sat through a long interview with several other people, it ends up being a vacuum cleaner (Kirby) salesperson job...😏 But they wouldn't advertise it as such because no one ever applied.

That's what I suspected last year. It sure seemed like there were a lot of jobs I applied for that I was eminently qualified for, that I never heard a thing on. I know it's competitive, so I didn't necessarily expect to get the job, but not even an e-mail response, or anything. It was so weird.

Something I’m seeing more and more nowadays are job titles that do not match the job description so that they don’t pay you for what your job actually is. The most obvious is the “assistant” (40k/yr) with managerial responsibilities ($80-$120k/yr) Or the “production coordinator” ($55k/yr) that does all video and audio editorial work with color correction (2 separate positions that pay on average 6 figures each)
    This should be illegal.

There is a problem with this. Their practice has a cost... They are spending the trust of aspiring employees. When they return later, they will find no one to give them attention.
This applies personally. I have done 100 interviews in the past year. Even when I was tailor made for a good job, I was refused. So now, as I get hit up constantly, I don't even care about the emails. I expect them to ask me to interview and then refuse me

Went to an interview and seemed to sail through, but then no call back and more posts that were like what I applied to and just different enough to disqualify me, maybe each up to 5 posts later. It boggled my mind. Same company.

This isn’t actually a new thing. It’s just become more commonplace. Eighteen years ago I interviewed for a job with a major medical provider. Although the interview went well, I didn’t get the job. The interesting thing was, nobody got the job. It was listed for months on their job board. The job was never filled, and it wasn’t because it was a hard to fill position. It just wasn’t a real job 🤷‍♀️

Only deal with established agencies or recruiters in the area where you're seeking a new job. Reach out to these people and build relationships. Also, completely dismiss any company with a low Glassdoor rating. They tend to churn people, have sketchy job descriptions, and have the kind of culture where they think it's OK to post fake jobs.

I’m honestly pretty happy with what I have, though inflation has made my salary less meaningful. I’ve learned to do prep well in advance and build connections. Employers what to play the browsing game so I’ll do the same, but in an honest way.

    1. Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) entity level controls and hire-to-pay testing.
    2. Management Disclosure and Analysis (MD&A) comments.
    3. Other actions (plaintiff action, EEOC, OSHA, attorney general action) that would “back into” SEC-focus areas.
This action would be secondary to a more important issue (Ponzi, asset allocation, etc)

I went through three different interviews just to meet with the hiring manager to tell me that I wasn’t' qualified enough for the position. I mean this would be good to know in the beginning. I asked several times what position I would be applying for and no one had an answer. They just told me that it was in Industrial Hygiene. I pretty much gave them a run down of my experience and what I'm looking for in my career but they never told me the role I would take on until I meet the hiring manager. When you're on a team that is shorthanded and overworked, they keep telling you that "yes, we need to hire more people". I assume they would post listings just to back up that claim that they are going to hire more people to help you (to inspire the current workforce), but that wouldn't be very motivating if the position was never filled. It might motivate people in higher turnover jobs to stay longer before they quit, but at some point they will realize they will always be overworked.

After I was hired we had several more candidate who months after their offer accepted a different job after waiting to get through an extensive background check, a drug test, and a physical agility test. I'm also a Black woman, and I have been called in for interviews to check the box that they've interviewed a diverse candidate - only to find out later that they never intended to hire me despite the fact that I was an excellent candidate and got pretty far in to the interview process. I'm not shocked that this is happening. Now I will only apply for jobs that I've heard about through my network and I can verify that is real. 7:34 this means they want them to be fearful of their job being taken by an outside candidate. It’s a fear tactic to boost productivity or make them more pliable. It may also act as a way to encourage a skeleton crew to stick around because the company is trying to hire more staff to alleviate the workload. It could work both ways, just depends on the current dynamics.

This is absolutely what the recruiters at Hays for example had to do. I was an Account Manager there for a few months, and it was so often about getting a huge amount of CVs and connections. My job postings were meant to be an extended networking. Of course they were real jobs, but it was still shady, trying to get as many new candidates, getting their information and contacts and so on.
The recruiting on the other side did fake job postings, to get even more CVs and contacts. It's really shady stuff that some companies do.
I also had my fair share of interviews for jobs, that never had a chance, because it was just to get my resume or to save it for later.
