Kitten experiencing a bad cluster seizure. Details below.

  • This kitten has recently been put down, but in the process of him developing cluster seizures, I found other, similar videos helpful in my research so, I'm sharing this one in hopes that it'll be helpful to someone else.
**Details which were important to include based on my resulting research:
We found him when he was a day or two old.
He'd fallen off the 14 foot high, 2nd floor porch of the abandoned apartment building in front of our property.
He was given an initial examination which concluded that there was no visible signs of damage to his being.
With no mom in sight at that time, we bottle fed him around the clock for 4 days until we were able to identify and procure the mother cat who, then, nursed him and his brother until weaning at 8 weeks old.
From the time we found him until the time we put him down, he was an exclusively indoor cat.
The kitten was 10 weeks old when he first started having seizures.
He started having seizures 2 days after being neutered.
The pain killer, Loxicom, was administered with the anesthesia.
Capstar was given to him the same day by the vet who preformed the neutering.
I do not believe he was tested for preexisting problems prior to being given the anesthesia.
His brother was lethargic coming home to us on the same day after the neutering.
This kitten, however, seemed hyped up and "twitchy" from that same day, and on, until the seizures started to make him lethargic.
He ate less at the soft food meals the last several days before putting him down.
This was the worst one of three seizures in the last 24 hours of his life.
At the 2:31 through the 3:12 mark, the kitten was yowling.
We tried a combination of 2 drops helichrysum and maybe 5 drops lavender essential oil, heavily diluted in 4 tbsp of liquid coconut oil after the first of those three seizures, and just before this seizure.
This one and the last one (the next day) happened shortly after eating. Others may have happened around meals of soft food, but I didn't think of looking for that detail right off.
All seizures woke him from a sleeping state.
There were no other dramatic symptoms of note: no vomiting, no diarrhea, no notable increase in drinking or urination, no swelling or yellowing of the eyes, no yellowing of the skin or paling of the gums.
The vet who put him down, without testing - per our request, believed him to have either had a congenital defect or have suffered some trauma from the fall, trauma which wasn't triggered until maybe after the neutering.
**My children, particularly my daughter, are crying in the background because the days leading up to this seizure were hard on them - realizing that their kitten was taking a bad turn, and that putting him down was imminent. This seizure came on suddenly and was particularly bad.
As for my parenting: I was trying to capture the seizure for the vet and at the same time get my children away from watching what was upsetting to them. All future comments criticizing my children's response or my parenting will be deleted - stop being assholes.

As hard as this was for you to go through, and my heart seriously feels for you and your kids, thank you so much for posting this. I foster cats and kittens and just got a 3 week old literally hours before I'm posting this comment. She was sleeping in my arms and then suddenly stared doing this, and I had no clue what was happening. This is my first experience. Once she returned to normal, I searched "3 week old kitten seizure" and this is the first video I clicked on. Now I have a name for the event and can do research. Thank you for being strong enough to share this video.

You and others like you are exactly why I shared it. When Root first started seizing, it was other TH-cam videos which helped me sort out what was happening and also gave me the idea to record his seizure for the vet. I hope you are able to figure out what is going on with your kitten.

I would like to hear an update on your cat. Seizures are very traumatic to animals and the owners. Now I’ve only studied human medicine, not veterinary. I also know the same applies for dogs as humans, support their head, for a cat I’d support the entire body, that way they can’t break their neck. Idk about cats though so look for another persons advice. What you don’t want though, is for them to hit their head or choke on fluids, or let fluids into their lungs. I keep a handy pupil gauge on me. Status post epilepticus (post seizure) usually will leave a headache, sense of fatigue, nausea, dizziness, etc
Once again though, IM NOT COMPLETELY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON FELINES. Hope your fluffy kitty is doing well

I know you posted this 2 years ago, but just found it after I experienced this with my rescue, Miles. He was an older cat, and his history over 10 years was largely unknown. Everything was fine with him for about 2 years until one day he woke from a sound sleep with a violent seizure. He then had no idea where he was or who I was and was very distressed ....it was like he was a different cat dropped into our house suddenly. He continued to have these episodes about every 3 hours, with one of them leaving him paralyzed (unable to move) for about 5-10 minutes. I had him euthanized by an in home service, and the vet actually witnessed and stopped another seizure with the tranquilzer.
Thank you sharing this as well as the history. I have never had or seen in my volunteer work a cat having seizures, so this has really helped me to process, and put the pieces together of what he had probably experienced in the 10 years before I adopted him.

If the child hasn't been educated yet about what's happening, they need to be. It's hard enough to be there for the furry, to add a hysterical child to the mix places more stress on everyone and the headache that comes after the seizure could actually cause another seizure (yes stress, and even fleas, can cause a seizure onset).
Y'all dealt with it beautifully, and I hope the kitty got help, and not euthanized 🥺

You are a strong mom especially when this is happening to a family pet. Your daughter sobbing made my heart break because my dog went through the same thing more than once as it also became a cluster for him.
For those who experience this with their family pet, please be by their side comforting them and calling out their name gently. Also putting a pillow underneath their head will help them not injure their jaws. Staying by their side holding them upright if they begin to walk, just always be by their side. If they seem to look at you with a sort of aggression keep in mind that they will be blind for a bit and won’t recognize you. Keep a safe distance while calling out their name to let them know that you are his family. Call their vet if they’ve experienced three seizures in one day. I hope this helps to those who experience this and are confused as to what to do.

I’m very sorry that this poor kitten had such bad seizures, and I’m even more sorry that your children had to witness so many of the scary things. My fiancé’s cat has had four seizures in the past year and it’s absolutely terrifying every time. We’re so worried that he’s going to get seriously hurt, especially if he has one when we’re not home. The scariest one was when he fell head-first off of his cat tree and hit his head on the radiator then landed on the floor, we rushed him to the vet after that one.
I’m pretty sure that the head trauma might have caused some bleeding in his brain, which gradually caused pressure to build which triggered the seizures. Anyway, I’m glad that this baby isn’t going through them anymore and I hope that you never have to worry about them again.

Really? For freak sake. There is no evidence and no truth to that at all. A Seizure is a neurological misfiring which is neither prevented, made worse/better, or started/stopped by human emotional reaction or lack there of. YOUR response to what you're watching in this video is made worse by listening to my children crying in the back ground and you're projecting that onto what you see.

Zenzetsu [Elite] My cat Jagger is 15 years old going to be 16 any day purebred Himalayan just started having seizures this year in the beginning of April was his first one and then he had one at the end of September and another one just A week and a half ago, I am not sure what is causing it but something is wrong I took him to the vet his blood test came out normal they said his kidney levels were a little higher than normal to put him on a low protein diet, he’s been very sensitive to sounds lately and twitching which she never did, his last seizure lasted a little longer about a minute maybe a little over and I started freaking out crying, I couldn’t help but get emotional I thought he was going to pass away and me,my boyfriend kept telling me to calm down and I’m going to make it worse because the cat can hear me, whether that’s true or not, I am uncertain but someone told me to give my cat CBD oil that it’s known to treat seizures as well as many other things, it could come the cat down if he or she is stressed! I purchased mine from holistic pet online they were rated the number one CBD oil for pets, and may be something you might want to try for your fur baby! I just started giving it to my cat a week ago and he seems a lot more calm, but he still keeps twitching at times but I do give him the CBD oil morning and night just about 5 mL with each dose! Thank you for sharing your experiences this could be educational for others in your similar situation! Sending prayers and positive vibes your way! 🙏🏽

My 8 year old cat has suddenly developed seizures over the last few days, she's at the vet right now and tonight is the second night they're keeping her in. She's been entirely healthy up until this point and the sweetest cat ever. I'm going down the medication route and will do everything to fight for her only If the meds allow her to have a good quality of life. Is there anyone on these comments in my position right now? Update: I had to have my darling Poppy put to sleep, she was in such a bad way. I'll always be heartbroken that I had to let her go.

As a mama bringing a fading four week old kitten back from the brink of death, I have compassion and awe for your strength and calm in this crisis. My only -- ONLY suggestion would be to let the kids be a part of it. At least the crying daughter. To allow them to participate, bear witness, and to comfort them as you all coped with what you were witnessing and the implications that this kitten might not make it. As hard as it is for a child or an adult, in the long run I believe it makes coping easier when you can feel like you are an involved participant in the situation and aren't being shooed out of the room.

I think it was a wrong move to put down the kitten. There are millions of cat owners around the world who has cats with epilepsy who thrives in life, because they get proper medication. And also, the majority of animals (and people as well) can get rid of epilepsy/seizures, either through proper treatment or, in however less frequent cases, it just disappears slowly by itself. It's actually quite rare that epilepsy lasts a life time, especially when it starts as young as with your kitten. I recognize that the kitten was terrified (and it was painful to watch), but you don't know if its seizures would have stopped within a year or two. Please, anyone who reads this: if you have a pet with seizures, do not just put it down because of a few series of attacks, but instead ask your vet what should be done.

    • @paffomi5110
      @paffomi5110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The cat was put down due to a decision between the vet and the publisher. If the cat had done this several times and in constant pain, the best thing to do would have been to put it down. Nobody wants to have to lose their pet but it stops their suffering

  • @Khaldolore
    @Khaldolore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Hindsight is 20/20, but the last thing you want to do whilst your pet is having a seizure is freak out and create loud noises. Crying, sobbing, all of that noise makes a seizure 20 times worse, especially for a creature as sensitive to stimuli as a cat. All you can do is make sure the cat doesn't hit anything whilst the seizure occurs, and try to keep loud noises to a minimum. Whilst understandable, you have to rein in your emotional reactions for the cat's sake whilst the seizure is happening, and comfort them as best you can once it's over.
If you ever get a cat prone to seizures again, or if anyone reading this experiences this, don't do what happened here in the future.

I had a cat who also had seizures. Try to keep the surrounding calm, let the cat have his seizures and try your best to put him side wards so he couldn't be choked by his saliva. I didn't know what to do at first and I didn't know that my cat had a developing seizure. He also fell off the loft in my house, coming from our next door's neighbor's roof. I thought that was the reason he had this illness, he could have banged his head on the floor. How pitiful. Until now, I am still grieving for my lost kitty just 2 weeks ago.

Am from india . My dog English Labrador 4.7 year old started having cluster seizures. Took him to the vet . He had his CBC checked Then it was found he had manings encephalitis ( inflammation of Manings layer of the brain ) so He administered 1 glucose with diazepam so that mind activity is calmed . Then he administered 500 mili gram of Chloromphenicol ( strong Anti biotic), 3 ml of meloxicam ( pain killer ) and 2 ml Rantidine twice per day according to his body weight (40kg ). His condition started improving with first day . He recovered from seizures from second day and started walking prior to that he couldn’t walk . I don’t know why vet put the kitten down , i do think putting down the kitten was first choice for the vet , i do think their was 80% chances she could have recovered. It’s absurd vet didn’t even took X-ray or CT scan to examine the extent of damage to the brain . If it would have minor then she could have recovered but it was major damage to the brain then vet should have suggested to put him down . But she is in better place now . I wrote this comment if someone in future read my comment and found it even a little bit helpful. Sorry for my bad English as this is not my native language . Also sorry for the little kitten but happy that she is free from the sufferings .
