Great job on the rest of the analysis, though. Having the PS3 version myself, I could tell that nearly everything besides resolution and shadow quality largely was the same as the PS4 version -- i.e., textures, reflections, etc. Just look at the areas inside Kamoshida's castle. Persona is not kind of game that i really like, watched my big bro play the 4 for hours and hours long without any interest back in the day or i may say i didn't really care and didn't follow the game, i do like anime (but i don't really like games based on anime) and i do like turn based strategy games (Front Mission series were my favorite), but some said this game isn't for everyone, do you think i can enjoy the game? A great example of why art direction matters more than how many pixels/polygons your models have. Persona 5 was made for the last gen, yet it still manages to be one of the best-looking games on the PS4.
well said. The art direction of the Persona games has always been superb but Persona 5 really kicks it up a few notches. It really nails that Manga-Anime cell shading and runs it through the roof.
MrInuhanyou123 honestly those aren't even long enough to complain about. And if P5 was made with PS4 in mind, there would definitely have been loading screens regardless
Great art style still benefits from running in 4K. If anything the basic modelling should enable this game to run in full native 4K on PS4 Pro. I would love to see Nintendo release a 4K console as well. It wouldn't even need to be very expensive either, quadrupling the GPU power of the Switch would be about the same as the base PS4.
I don't really focus on the visuals so I never noticed any screen tearing through out my whole playtrough. There probably were some but me not noticing any of them at all proves that they are not that distracting. Low resolution was annoying at times though. (when you want to look at a small detail etc.)
Sky Yuki I tried PS3 version, then PS4. Tearing is huge and anyone using a ps3 wants to defend their decade old console. It's absolutely atrocious, but the game runs fine. And the loading times are awful.
Austin Jackson I play it on an emulator and the tearing is still there. Might not be hardware related. Although, it could also be that the emulator is still in alpha but just found it interesting that even PS3 native has tearing in the same area.

I have yet to see this "Noticeable Screen tearing" you're talking about on PS3. The game has run perfectly fine for me, both on my TV and Monitor, which both are 1080p.
Invader Zak Funny enough, I was thinking the same thing. I don't have a PS4 so PS3 was my only option, and the only issue I've seen is a drop in framerate when in Central Street
Alias Z50 Ehm yes they do. Gravity rush 2, Nioh, Horizon zero dawn are here because of Sony( Games in the first quarter alone) Hell, Yakuza 0 (and future Yakuza games) localizations are the direct results of #Buildingthelist. Sony approached Sega to localize Yakuza games once again and it became successful. Thank Sony, that they have good third-party relationships with 3rd parties unlike Microsoft. No wonder no one wants to release their games on Xbox.
JRPGs are menu-based, so Persona 5 running at 30fps is no big deal. Though considering that this game isn't very demanding, I don't know why Atlus couldn't boost the frame rate to 60 on the PS4 version.
To be fair I commend atlus for releasing this on PS3 for those not fortunate to afford new consoles. There shouldn't be hate for this business decision as they release a very solid product either way.
Being a massive fan of Persona 3 and 4 Golden (convinced me to buy a PS Vita especially to play it lol), I really wanted to play 5 but was really disappointed when I read it was a PS4 exclusive (which I didn't intend to buy as it was expensive at the time of this game's announcement and almost none of the other games it offered interest me). Seeing it eventually also got released on PS3 (which I own for years), in English (and Japanese!), and with actually playable performance was a fantastic surprise. So glad I got to play this game. Thanks for localizing the PS3 version. Fantastic work Atlus :) (I NEVER SAW IT COMMMMIIINN'... :) )
PS3 only gets a bit blurried every now and then but othrerwise it's the exact same, and even that is nearly impossible to notice without a side by side comparison. ATLUS never fails to deliver a quality product.
This is the only game recently that I am aware of where I had to check that it was indeed running at 30 instead of 60. The snappiness and responsiveness are top notch and can trick even a 60fps fanatic to a degree. Would still have like the option of 60fps at least for the Pro just as that extra kick. Thank you DF for the comparison breakdown.
I'm finally giving this game a try for a while, I haven't played an actual persona game ever, the closest I've played was Catherine and I loved that game
creative username Zelda is cool but I agree persona does beat it by a comfortable margin. Zelda is way OVER hyped 2 the point I lost interest due 2 idiots telling I was wrong but Nintendo fantards should respect a man's right to choose why he likes more! Besides uncharted 4, metal gear 5 TPP, HORIZON ZERO DAWN, LAST OF US REMASTERED, UNCHARTED LOST LEGACY, UNCHARTED 2, INFAMOUS SECOND SON, WITCHER 3, WITCHER 2, DRAGON AGE INQUISITION, SKYRIM HD, RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER, HAVE ALL SURPASSED ZELDA BOTW IMO!!!! little Nintendo cubs can't tell a grown man who owns all platforms & played games over 35 + years he don't know a good game cause they are easily impressed by a Zelda game on an underpowered tablet lol. Just saying Zelda botw is a very good open world game with cool physics & gr8 gameplay mechanics but many games destroy it by doing things better or expanding upon the Zelda formula XD
I can imagine.. but i just enjoy zelda more because i get bored of all jrpg's because they are too slow for me (besides Pokémon for some reason) but hey! Each to it's own
damnnnn i am so damn addicted to this game everything is just perfect story, artwork, fighting with style even menu everything is just goddamn perfect this is the first i am giving a game 10/10 mark
Yeah, you're right, but Atlus would never do it. It makes them less money. In fact, I've never even heard of a PlayStation game having physical versions with crossbuy. Xbox does it though with including 360 or PC versions but that's almost all I've seen of it (Cuphead for example)
It's really a bummer that this video was so negative about the fact that both versions are mostly the same. I understand the frustration PS4 owner must feel, but it's GREAT for PS3 owners to be able to play this amazing game in 2017 with minimal compromises. DigitalFoundry, you should really expand your minds past the first world bubble you guys live in and realize that A LOT of people around the world still play on older consoles because they can't afford the new ones. Again, I understand the need to complain about the fact that the games could have been a lot better on the PS4, but the negativity towards the PS3 version was uncalled for.
I don't really focus on the visuals so I never noticed any screen tearing through out my whole playtrough. There probably were some but me not noticing any of them at all proves that they are not that distracting. Low resolution was annoying at times though. (when you want to look at a small detail etc.)
Sorry, what? PC is the best option if you're on a limited budget and don't absolutely need to play exclusives. I think it's a rather stupid decision to downgrade to a console and pay money just for a couple of games.
Simon True, PC is the best option but it doesn't hurt having a console on the side. You don't really have to buy a game on console right when it comes out.
i have my pc, a ps3(which im looking to sell, because i don't even touch it) a 360(same as ps3) and a 3ds, so my true experience is 3ds+pc, play games at home, play games on the go, my master combination :D
This is one of those games that I wish I could wipe everything I know and remember about it from my memory so I could play it again and enjoy it the way I did the first time through. UGHHH
When using Boost mode I notice that loading in this game is significantly faster. Most noticeable when loading save files and any moment the 'Take your time' loading icon appears.
Frame rate isn't about graphics, that's entirely about the game playing fine. also i want both good look & Good playing games. I very rarely want more over the other and choose to skip those not good at gameplay, or not good looking. I don't need 100,000 of Polygons. But i do require effort and presentation. I lived in the snes era, I'm tired of sprites. And i want to see progression not regression.
Then why are you on this channel? This is a channel dedicated towards analysis of computer graphics. You obviously care about graphics in some way else you wouldn't be here.
AlColossus I fucking love the ever loving fuck out of Persona 4. The dungeons were meh before we had a comparison in Persona 5. Now they border on mediocre, so a little lower on the "meh" scale. Then again, if you're playing Persona for the dungeon crawling, I think you got in for the wrong reasons.
I probably will not buy a playstation 4 any time soon so when I heard that Persona 5, the game that tempted me the most to get a ps4, would also come out on playstation 3 I was just filled with joy. Even if it s a less performing version, to me and some other people I know the ps3 version was an important descision by Atlas for the game to sell more. And since I m not used to ps4 graphics anyways I personally don t even notice the frame problems or things like that.
As an owner of a ps3 copy of persona 5, I haven't noticed the screen tearing much. The only time I noticed it was when I walked near the sun lit windows in shujin academy. Other than that, it run pretty darn well.
+Marco Ru Say that to atlust and Square Enix whom made every FF but 15 available on steam, not to mention Legend of the Heroes, some Dragon Quest titles and the Disgea series. We aren't in 2010 anymore. There is a large demand for PC ports as the PC community is rising at a quick pace.
Was on the fence, but this convinced me to get the PS4 version once I get the console. I have played about two hours of this at my friends house and it's fantastic. I'm always down for a good JRPG.
"If you care about framerate, you've probably already made the jump to the Playstation 4 anyway"... wait, what? Why? How many ps4 games run at 60 even today? Not many.
Really? 'Cause the most complete list I can find counts 14 in total (not counting remasters and ports of old games). In all fairness though, yes 60fps gaming does exist on ps4, but it's hardly the 'choice' platform for framerate enthusiasts now, is it?
Only 14? That's low-balling it big time. There are literally hundreds of 60fps PS4 games. From big stuff like most of the Frostbite games, Doom, Resident Evil VII, etc to most sports games and indie games and many other random titles. It's a lot more common than you'd think, if you go back and look at the library as a whole. It's really not bad!
What was I playing before Persona 5 stole my attention? MGSV Phantom Pain, Ghost Recon Wild Lands, pretty much action shooters, but holly crap Persona 5 is so good!!! I can't stop playing it LOL!!!
Blag Cog dude the point is it's not action RPGs there for we just gonna call it "turn base". Don't be too technical here and say something like "ff13 is not turn base" and your right but you know what we mean and this is a convenient way of saying it.
It's understandable to see so many pc gamers beg for this game, i mean there is nothing else close to it and it's one of the rare game that we will still talk about it years and years later.
PC Friends are so desperate for console exclusives they go as far as to defend their shady, barely functioning emulators that run games at 15FPS max on top tier gaming rigs while calling such performance "playable". I never thought i will live long enough to see the day...The Glorious PC Master Race is saying that 15 FPS is actually Playable. What happen Glorious PCMR? Decided to push "cinematic" experience to a completely new level?
Or maybe people just want to play the game the way they like it and not have to buy an old console for a couple of games which even run at lower resolution on these original consoles compared to custom resolutions on these emulators. Who knows.
that "barely functioning emulator' progressed so much recently, that Demons Souls went from "black screen" to "perfectly playable" with 25-30 fps in THREE WEEKS. give developers another month(maximum) and they will optimize it for persona 5 too. If they managed to do that with AAA project(demons souls) in less than month, will somehow manage to do same with JRPG with stylised cartoonish graphics, trust me ;) RPCS3 is generously supported on Patreon by hundreads of people giving developers opportunity to work FULL TIME on the emulator. any more questions?
Utherellus Wait what? You guys are THAT Desperate? You are legitimately give your own real life money to some shady people to work on an emulator that may or may not even be finished? If you have money to donate then you might as well just buy original PS3 for like 30 bucks which is literally a pocket change you give to your kids and play games right now instead of waiting months and months for that emulator to finally work more or less properly LMAO. PC Master Race, more like PC Donating Race.
I got into the franchise after playing Persona 4 Golden on Vita. Glad I did, because this one is fucking good. Thanks DF for the video. Kore wa kore wa...
last time I enjoyed a loading screen was when I played Recore, you could finish Bloodborne and the Dark Souls trilogy while it loaded, it was so good that it allowed me to shower, take the dog for a walk, work for a week, finish a few games here and there, have dinner, finish one piece from beginning to end and then come back to sit for another 5 minutes for it to load, best loading screens ever.
Eng. Jorge Santana yeah, it would've been perfect on the Switch! I have it on PS4, but I would've much rather got it for Switch and play it on the go! But at least there'll be tons of other Atlus games on Switch :) and I can't wait for stuff like Capcom's Ace Attorney series to hit the Switch!
Lucas V that's silly, persona isn't made by Sony, it's a third party company. BotW being exclusive makes sense as it was made by Nintendo, a first party
Inferno G4ming That's not silly, if it was on PS4 it would be a much better looking game and people like me, who usually don't buy Nintendo systems, would be able to play it. There's nothing silly about that.

@@princepeachfuzz trust me you barely notice, I have a problem with FPS drop but on PS3 is fine and the game is enjoyable, I have 90 hours on my playthrough
"By comparison, something like Infamous has X triangles..."
Yeah, and all the characters look like wax-molded caricatures, too. Sometimes, style trumps substance.
what a horrible hot take

I have yet to see this "Noticeable Screen tearing" you're talking about on PS3. The game has run perfectly fine for me, both on my TV and Monitor, which both are 1080p.
Invader Zak Funny enough, I was thinking the same thing. I don't have a PS4 so PS3 was my only option, and the only issue I've seen is a drop in framerate when in Central Street
It's there, but I've only seen it happening on screen shots.
I haven't experienced any screen tearing on my PS3.
Same :V
Blu boi best boi.
I do, u probly blind to not see that much tearing 🤦♂️
PS is killing it in 2017. Thanks, DF!
Faiyez Yes but Sony doesnt deserve that credit tho
PS getting killed*
*Scorpio*
***** What do you mean "no games"? 10 less games out of thousands is not a lot so stop exaggerating.
Xbox doesn't have any exclusives anymore except for Halo, so no point buying the Scorpio, just get a good PC instead for the same price.
Just ordered a PS3 copy of P5! Can’t wait!
I couldn’t notice any screen tearing when you where talking about it.
Loving this amazing game, the PS4 exclusives so far this year really have been excellent.
Prince Dizzy Playstation exclusive for some time.
Loek Gerrits not really lol
i don't see persona or any other major jrpgs coming to pc for another 10years
PS4 exclusives? Persona 5 is not one of them LMAO
fightnight14 majority probably bought and play it on PS4 though but I see your point
Obviously, they meant that it isn't on Xbox or PC (Sony exclusive)
Being a massive fan of Persona 3 and 4 Golden (convinced me to buy a PS Vita especially to play it lol), I really wanted to play 5 but was really disappointed when I read it was a PS4 exclusive (which I didn't intend to buy as it was expensive at the time of this game's announcement and almost none of the other games it offered interest me). Seeing it eventually also got released on PS3 (which I own for years), in English (and Japanese!), and with actually playable performance was a fantastic surprise.
So glad I got to play this game. Thanks for localizing the PS3 version. Fantastic work Atlus :)
(I NEVER SAW IT COMMMMIIINN'... :) )
PS3 only gets a bit blurried every now and then but othrerwise it's the exact same, and even that is nearly impossible to notice without a side by side comparison. ATLUS never fails to deliver a quality product.
GOTY 2017
This game makes Xboners WiiU Weirdos jealous.
94 score on Metacritic.
then what is zelda.
MorganaDays Zelda has 97 on metacritic so......
MorganaDays nope, Zelda takes that one big time.
Whoa, it’s only 30fps!? It looks so incredibly smooth!
"So with the PSPro....you get nothing extra"
This is in general, what you get when you buy PSPro.
P5 is such a great game it pushes you back in time to play the past Persona games as well
Beat the game, definitely something to checkout if you're into RPGs and are on the console market.
Devin Money i hate jrpg but this Broke my hatred towards jrpgs
Devin Money is it worth it if i haven't played the previous
Get Shrekt Yes its worth it.
Arief Jodie so this game is not a direct continuation of the other games
Get Shrekt No each game is it's own separate thing
why'd you compare p5 to infamous lmao
He just pulled out a random AAA game for reference.
I play Persona 5 on my overclocked ps3. It helps alot with screen tearing by keeping the framerate closer to a stable 30 fps.
I have a PS3 version. :)
i have both versions for collection
Nice!
Thank you !
Basically, i have 2 copies too, because my preordered PS3 version is still missing. But i bought it on PSN, because the hype is too BIG! :)
No problem. I would like to see your Persona collection. :) :) :)

It's crazy how this game stood the test of time even in 2023
This is the only game recently that I am aware of where I had to check that it was indeed running at 30 instead of 60. The snappiness and responsiveness are top notch and can trick even a 60fps fanatic to a degree. Would still have like the option of 60fps at least for the Pro just as that extra kick. Thank you DF for the comparison breakdown.

I'm finally giving this game a try for a while, I haven't played an actual persona game ever, the closest I've played was Catherine and I loved that game
probably my favorite game of this generation. it's amazing how I was saying that about Zelda a few weeks ago but persona 1 uped it
creative username
Zelda is cool but I agree persona does beat it by a comfortable margin.
Each to it's own
Who else is here after the 1st DLC Smash Bros teaser?
I think John set a record for amount of times one says, "On the flip side."
damnnnn i am so damn addicted to this game everything is just perfect story, artwork, fighting with style even menu everything is just goddamn perfect this is the first i am giving a game 10/10 mark
I don't have a PS4 and so got the PS3 version, and I totally loved it. Still a gorgeous game. Will probably re-buy when I have a PS4 someday tho
Angel Diaz That's a lot of money, should be crossbuy
Aline Piroutek I agree. But oh well, I bough a physical copy anyway.
Angel Diaz Physical copies should be crossbuy too
Yeah, you're right, but Atlus would never do it.
PERSONA 5 both on PS3 and 4 are still amazing even 7 years after its initial release on April 2017.
I don't really focus on the visuals so I never noticed any screen tearing through out my whole playtrough. There probably were some but me not noticing any of them at all proves that they are not that distracting. Low resolution was annoying at times though. (when you want to look at a small detail etc.)
>17000 triangles is modest
>SMO mario is 12000.
Yea sure
People that own just a console or just a PC are the true Peasents. #HavingBothMasterRace
Remy X Paying 200+ dollars for a couple of exclusives with console graphics? That's just not worth it if you ask me.
i have my pc, a ps3(which im looking to sell, because i don't even touch it) a 360(same as ps3) and a 3ds, so my true experience is 3ds+pc, play games at home, play games on the go, my master combination :D
Lauro365 if that's your dream combination get a switch
Great video! Back when DF isn't biased.
How are they biased now?
This is one of those games that I wish I could wipe everything I know and remember about it from my memory so I could play it again and enjoy it the way I did the first time through. UGHHH
Seeing what devs can do with legacy hardware is so intriguing
When using Boost mode I notice that loading in this game is significantly faster. Most noticeable when loading save files and any moment the 'Take your time' loading icon appears.
Love that Intro keep up the good work DF
Am I the only one who doesn't care about graphics? If I'm able to play the game, then it's fine lol
Exactly
Frame rate isn't about graphics, that's entirely about the game playing fine.
also i want both good look & Good playing games. I very rarely want more over the other and choose to skip those not good at gameplay, or not good looking. I don't need 100,000 of Polygons. But i do require effort and presentation.
I lived in the snes era, I'm tired of sprites. And i want to see progression not regression.
Then why are you on this channel? This is a channel dedicated towards analysis of computer graphics. You obviously care about graphics in some way else you wouldn't be here.
I'm so happy to own the PS4 I've been playing it since yesterday and I can see an instant masterpiece
The music is absolutely fantastic
about time you did it!!
Amazing game
LynchyNuggets you should play Persona 4 (golden if you have a vita) after p5, it's just as good
AlColossus p4's dungeons suck tho
Pavith In your opinion. Lots of people enjoy them
AlColossus I fucking love the ever loving fuck out of Persona 4. The dungeons were meh before we had a comparison in Persona 5. Now they border on mediocre, so a little lower on the "meh" scale. Then again, if you're playing Persona for the dungeon crawling, I think you got in for the wrong reasons.
Wow, that was fast. Well thank you for reading my comment section yesterday.
Would be cool to have a "Golden" version made for the ps4, then they could boost all the technical stuff.
Royal is coming out soon
As an owner of a ps3 copy of persona 5, I haven't noticed the screen tearing much. The only time I noticed it was when I walked near the sun lit windows in shujin academy. Other than that, it run pretty darn well.
Awesome Video! It really helped me choose between buying a PS4 or a PS4 Pro. Thanks for that one! ^^
Now if i could just find somewhere that has the f-ing game in stock.
Pretty much the same game. That's what i hoped for since I have only PS3. Thanx for video!
Top irmão, parabéns pela análise ❤
Should run beautifully on Switch now
Exaclty
About that...
I like this format better than the old of just showing the games. Thanks!
Persona 5 Royal Switch port will be like Persona 5 on the ps3
The switch is way more capable than the PS3 for sure, nothing to do
200 hours with 0 bugs, a feat to achieve nowadays!
I don't give a fuck if it's basically last generation tech behind it. It's still beautiful in every way.
Amazing Game Both On PS4 & PS3 !
atlus really outdid themselves this time !
This game's FPS drops to 18fps in Shibuya district
MorganaDays well good luck with that because japanese devs tend to dislike pc gaming
I assume you're on about the PS3 version here? I've got the PS4 version (I'm about 40 hours in) and performance has been a locked 30fps throughout.
The framerate is a solid 30 throughout on PS4. If Shibuya drops to 18fps I can't imagine what some of the late game dungeons drop to.
Shibuya doesn't drop to 18 fps. The Red Light District does drop to about 20 fps, that's true. No lag in any of the dungeons though.
+Marco Ru
Say that to atlust and Square Enix whom made every FF but 15 available on steam, not to mention Legend of the Heroes, some Dragon Quest titles and the Disgea series.
Not many.
A lot more than you'd think, actually. It's a big step up from last generation games overall.
Henning102 Does it matter how many frames the games run at? You're missing out on some of the best games of this generation
Yes... yes it does going from 144hz to 30fps is terrible.
never played persona games but i think i might pick up this one, looks good
This video feels thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.
Sweet Lord of the Rings reference.
Why did I say this lmao
What was I playing before Persona 5 stole my attention? MGSV Phantom Pain, Ghost Recon Wild Lands, pretty much action shooters, but holly crap Persona 5 is so good!!! I can't stop playing it LOL!!!
Its a turn based games even at 24 fps it would've been fine
For gameplay wise I'd agree, but it'd look even better visually if it was 60fps.
amen. no need for overated 60fps on this type of games
It is not just turn based. It has some more stuff in there. I don't want to spoil too much.
Wait, I could understand if you only owned a PS3, but you have a PS4 and you went for the PS3 version?, what?
***** People donate for emulation teams and the results are great. It's not easy to get this to work and most emulators are free which is awesome.
HAHAHAHAHA YOU ARE AMAZING DUDE
I got into the franchise after playing Persona 4 Golden on Vita. Glad I did, because this one is fucking good. Thanks DF for the video. Kore wa kore wa...

Correct answer
last time I enjoyed a loading screen was when I played Recore, you could finish Bloodborne and the Dark Souls trilogy while it loaded, it was so good that it allowed me to shower, take the dog for a walk, work for a week, finish a few games here and there, have dinner, finish one piece from beginning to end and then come back to sit for another 5 minutes for it to load, best loading screens ever.
YAY PERSONA!!!! I LOVE PERSONA! PERSONA PERSONA PERSONA

"The ps4 version is cleeeeeaaarrrlly the 1 to get"

Ni No Kuni and P5 are probably the best looking ps3 games. They have the test of time art style.
To bad is PS exclusive would be awesome on the Nintendo Switch.
Eng. Jorge Santana Bad that Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is an Nintendo exclusive, would be awesome to play on a PS4
hope that Persona Q2 will be available on Switch xd
Lucas V that's silly, persona isn't made by Sony, it's a third party company. BotW being exclusive makes sense as it was made by Nintendo, a first party
Inferno G4ming That's not silly, if it was on PS4 it would be a much better looking game and people like me, who usually don't buy Nintendo systems, would be able to play it. There's nothing silly about that.
After 6 years here i'm playing it on a Steam Deck
who the fuck cares?! just enjoy the game. people so worried about specs and forget to just have fun.
