    I got this on launch on PC and I was really surprised how good of a port it is.
    It also has my new favorite feature where you can set different ui buttons for your controller depending what you play. Way to many games force me to use xbox buttons while using a playstation controller.

      You comment made me want to download it on gamepass now.
      So many gamepass games are xbox prompts only (I get it, but it's still not acceptable since PC accepts ALL input devices), and as someone who's only grown up with Playstation prompts, my brain ceases to work when I see xbox ones (especially the X). Not only is the button prompt overlooked so often, but so is rebindable gamepad controls. At most games have a few presets, but usually they don't, and no preset fits every user.
      Accessibility is still a problem and it's almost 2023. Just makes no sense.

    Persona 5 does actually have antialiasing - only on PS3 where it supported MLAA running on the Cell SPUs. Again points to the PS4 version not being the most optimised port, which has impacted other versions since.

    • @cunnyman
      @cunnyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Yup, PS3 was the only optimized port out of them all.
      Considering hacked PS3 can unlock fps and maintain 60fps in most scenes except city, I assume PS4 could’ve maintained 60fps too if allowed. A worse hardware, the Switch, can maintain 60fps similarly as well.

      I can confirm the Switch runs P5R perfectly in handheld mode when patched at 720p. I opted against patching the game to 60fps, but I've seen videos suggesting that it works well, hardly budging below 60 at 540p, although both in tandem might be a little too much without overclocking and/or ruining battery life.

    I usually hate non-native resolution on Switch and I don't really understand why a technically simple game like Persona 5 has to be downscaled. But still, I don't really notice the downscaling in handheld mode that much (much less than in other games!). The cartoon look doesn't lose that much with the upscaled low rendering resolution. I also played the PS4 version but the long dungeon sequences with its many fights made me put it away early. With the Switch I can play for 15 minutes, put it away and continue later on very easily. That outweights the minor issues with the resolution by far for me.

    • @lassesuurmunne8340
      @lassesuurmunne8340 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Yeah the higher resolution 2D side of the graphics go a long long way to fooling us that the overall experience feels like it’s higher resolution. I don’t get the same feeling as say when I tried playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in handheld, I had to play that game docked. But Persona 5 Royal on Switch is awesome both on the tv and handheld, and the OLED Switch makes it feel almost as if I’m still on my TV. I have it on Series X as well and I actually prefer it on Switch. Something about the much sharper image quality and higher resolution textures on Series X actually give the graphics a sort of cell shaded look because they feel too clean and there’s just something more visceral and gritty and darker mood about how the game looks on Switch that I prefer. I’m not such a fan of cell shaded graphics, and to me Persona games in my mind don’t fit with that look. And so the Switch version is more visually pleasing for me overall because it doesn’t have that cell shaded look, it just feels like Persona, it feels more familiar. I know that’s a bizarre opinion but that’s how I feel.

      That kind of drop must have to do with some setting in the game. I'm running the gamepass version on a gtx 750ti + 3rd gen i7 and I'm not noticing this issue ingame. Running at 100% render 1080p, shadow middle, smaa and no depth of field. But I'm still at Madarame's palace, so not sure for others and new big areas.
      Although I've noticed a different instance of fps drop, and that is in the "press any button" menu, where from 60fps it gradually drop to 39fps, and slowly gets back to 50ish before the screen fades back to the opening. I think it has to do with generating the background npcs (shades of gray and black). If I go to the next menu (selection menu) it will go back to 60, while New Game page exhibit that drop to a smaller degree (from 52 to 48, and back to 52). It's weird.

    I've been playing on my Steam Deck and I've had an amazing experience with specific settings. In the game properties on SteamOS before launching the game, I forced the game to run on Proton Experimental and set gamescope to force 1440p on the internal display which fixes the blocky UI issue since it'll downscale (Edit: I found out I was having blocky UI because half-rate shading was on. I still recommend doing this though because 1440p UI downscaled still looks better). In game, set FPS limit to 60 and rendering resolution to 50% to match the screen's native resolution, and in the Deck performance options setting the screen refresh rate to 40hz and FPS cap to 40. It's way smoother than the 30fps lock and none of the game's framedrops go under 40 anyway so it's hard locked 100% of the time.

    After about 50h, I think that despite it's obvious compromise, the Switch version is still pretty great, especially on portable (I'm playing on an OLED Switch). Yes it's quite blurry but I've quickly got used to it despite usually disliking when a game is too blurry. Also there's barely any aliasing on portable mode for what I saw.
    As for docked, resolution are a little better than portable yeah, but the aliasing and lack of OLED screen for my monitor where I'm playing on make me sometime prefer portable a little more.
    I've tried gamepass version a little on my PC and it was pretty great, but still settle on Switch for portability (and having to travel quite a lot lately for personal reasons, being able to play in the train is great). I already had the Royal version (and base one too) on PS4 but I've never been able to get into it on it. I've played and finished OG version on PS3 too, so it's quite great to see the difference.
    But after seeing this review, it's imo quite apparent that the Royal port weren't really optimised on PS4. While it wasn't an issue there (even tho it could have run at 60fps on it if it was optimized I think), it start to show on these newer versions (and not only Switch one). I think it could have been better on some things on all version.
    Overall, still a pretty great game.

      I flunked out of this game on PS4 due to all the tutorialization and cutscenes. While I still will find them tedious, I think, with text heavy games either PC or handheld are the way to go for me. And unfortunately I can't play PC games (work from home computer and space limitations). While I used to play Civ VI and other management games all the time on PC, I can't bring myself to play them on a console. I'm learning JRPGs are similar in that they're text heavy with a lot of downtime/menuing. I'm considering picking this up on Switch as I kept finding myself interested, but I will probably never play the whole thing sat in front of my couch on PS5. Glad to hear people are saying the handheld is worth the downgrade.

  • @SpanishSebas

    As for the visual cutback:
    1. It's not that big of a deal. The game still looks nice and it retains its identity. 810/540p are fairly standard resolutions for NSW ports. FF XII runs like that and everybody seemed happy about it.
    2. P5R on my og 2017 Switch with max brightness and airplane mode off gets like 3h 50m of playtime. Turning brightness to half makes it reach 4h. For Switch Lite that would be like 5h 30min and for V2 and OLED we look at 6h +. I don't know guys, if this is the visual quality needed to play outside for that long, I'm all in about it.

Everything looks like absolutely clean 2D art, it's amazing. Go to the game properties in the Steam OS UI to 2650x1400 game resolution, and check "Set Resolution for internal and external display". For this, this option wasn't availble until I once started the game with the chosen resolution, and exited it again. Likely I assume in part due tothe team that ported the Switch and decision to have the game resolution lower than prior Atlus titles. Can't say for 100% certainty, but it seems from little knowledge I know it is locked 30FPS on Switch. Which is better showing than SMT V. Persona has never relied on state of the art visuals and the highly stylized graphics presentation holds up really well even despite the enormous resolution gap. Been waiting for this! So exciting! Thank you Digital Foundry 💙 to me the game looks stunning on every platform, it’s one of those games that is just so strong in it’s art style. And although the Switch has lower resolution 3D graphics, the 2D graphics which to me is an equally important thing in Persona seem to be running at a much higher resolution and feel almost identical to my Series X copy of the game in practice and since I find myself often staring at the 2D art, sometimes more than the 3D it goes a long way to fool you to think that the game in general is running at a higher resolution than it is. My favorite version is perhaps bizarrely the Switch version. On my Series X the graphics are so sharp that it reveals an almost cell shaded look which I’m not the biggest fan of. So weirdly I prefer the worse graphics on Switch because somehow it’s more visually pleasing and I’ve never thought this before but I prefer the jaggier look to the Switch version because it feels nostalgic and more consistent with Persona 4 and I loved how Persona 4 looked on PS2, I’m a fan of how PS2 graphics looked. A weird opinion I know, but after playing both versions back and forth I found myself always missing the Switch version and I thought it would be the other way around.

So I was never making any kind of argument comparing Switch to PS3, I was talking about Royal and especially the recent releases of Royal. The PS3 version of Persona 5 also suffers from performance issues, the Switch does not. My entire point was about why the Switch version is my favorite, that was the point I was trying to make. That overall I prefer how the Switch version looks. I feel as if even the anime cutscenes animate smoother. My Series X version shows stuttering, but I haven’t noticed that on Switch. They might animate exactly the same on both but the stutter seems at least more noticeable somehow on Series X. I’m still glad I have both versions, and I have the original Persona 5 on PS4 and PS3 but I played that on PS4. Royal is my favorite on Switch. And yes it looks and runs better on Switch. My point about the 2D was that it’s the most noticeable bump up from PS3, it’s 1080p, the 2D. But the 3D looks better as well. And as I was trying to explain, to me, for me, the 3D on Switch looks better than any other version because I just love how it looks specifically on Switch and on Xbox Series X and PS5 the graphics almost look cell shaded because the 3D graphics are “too good” and they reveal this cell shaded look which I’m not the biggest fan of. I was never talking about the PS3 version… maybe someone else is, somewhere but I wasn’t. I thought it was obvious that Switch is more powerful than PS3 to everyone. Peace ✌️

    I briefly tried this out on Steam Deck before returning it, and I agree the screen just doesn't do the game justice. Wound up getting it on Switch OLED instead. It's not a perfect port by any means, but it does run well. So that's something.

  • @raikohzx4323

    The Steam Deck screen isn't a total limiter. It has the potential to be more saturated and have stronger contrasts, but requires plugins like VibrantDeck, whether through the DeckyLoader or Crankshaft systems, to pull it off - and while it's no OLED, the colors can be made so, *so* much better than Valve's default, desaturated look on the system. The IPS LCD may be a limiter, but Valve really needs to add proper screen color control natively, because it can actually be far, far better, and the plugin lets me play games with identical visuals to my monitor or TV in contrast.

    Not sure if folks covered this earlier, but my theories on the choices on the Switch port, which also have to take the PS3 original into consideration:
    1. Textures. An error in the vid where Oliver said the textures had to be made with PS3's 512MB RAM in mind... that's true, however the textures got overhauled as you brought up for the PS4 Royal version... which the Switch versions' textures are based on. Sadly a comparison wasn't made between PS3 and Switch here, but from footage I think Switch does outdo PS3 at least a bit here. The other thing to consider is the file size:
    PS3: 16.6GB (seems to be without any of the DLC)
    PS4: Possibly 20.25GB (really hard to find a proper source for the download), again seemingly without any DLC
    PS4 Royal: 37.8GB
    Switch: 14.2GB
    Switch would've needed to fit a 16GB cart (which considering how cart sizes work actually would be around 15GB-ish IIRC). So compressing the textures was an obvious way to go about it. Otherwise they'd have to also consider compressing the audio (a huge no-no for this game!) or the FMVs (which seem to be wonderfully preserved on Switch, but how numerous are these?).
    2. Resolution. Switch runs at 810p docked and 540p portable, vs. 1080p on PS4 (both editions) and 720p on PS3. But it also curiously runs at 900p on Xbox One. Notice a pattern? Every res number is a multiple of 90. So:
    720 + 90 = 810 (Switch docked)
    810 + 90 = 900 (XBO)
    900 + 90 + 90 (180) = 1080 (PS4)
    810 - 90 = 720 (PS3)
    720 - 90 - 90 (180) = 540 (Switch portable)
    No way that wasn't deliberate. I also suppose dynamic resolution wasn't a possibility. Perhaps the engine could implement that for whatever reason? Also big shout out for Switch having a native-res UI and 2D assets in both modes... which XBO somehow botched.
    3. Framerate. Remember that DF video of Persona 5 on PS3 vs. PS4? PS3 has a LOT of issues. From performance dips, to screen-tearing out the wazoo. Switch not only runs at a flawless 30fps (as far as can be seen), that alone is a huge improvement, plus the Switch's seemingly universal standard of prohibiting screen-tearing is a huge boost as well (it started on Wii U but a few like Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition got away with it somehow). Also the comparison with other games is odd. Tokyo Mirage is I'm pretty certain far less complex, and the big games like SMTV, Witcher 3, etc. have lots of performance issues. Far from a perfect 30fps.
    Overall the Switch version is most certainly in-between PS3 and PS4 while having the changes and improvements from the Royal edition. I think it's a perfectly good port and a job well done by Sega CS2 who did all of the new versions. Kudos!

Fantastic performance and visuals. Unfortunately, I don't have too much time to spend in front of a TV, so I was hoping the Switch version would allow me to get into the game again. A bit disappointed there were so few comments on the "Steam Deck version" (which is the PC one)
    Most of the time dedicated to it was saying how the Deck's screen is worse than the OLED Switch's and this is bad for P5 especially, since the game's visuals use much of pure blacks...
    Anyway, the game does seem to have a trouble on crowded or open areas in the PC version, as some people reported getting 120FPS everywhere, but then a massive drop in crowded areas or even the second half of the second palace, even though it has nothing of special there. Should probably be fixed in a future patch, but it's definitely an issue with the port, not our specs or the Steam Deck's
    As for resolution and texture quality, there IS a difference. Textures are upscaled like, 4x. Probably AI upscaled, but still, it is not the same thing as the other ports and I'm not sure if, even on the Deck's unimpressive screen, that would look worse than a 540p version, just because it's on an OLED screen,
    but I don't have a Switch, so I can't confirm anything. Opinions vary, I suppose

    • @JackisJack_
      @JackisJack_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason is very simple, and it’s sadly something gamers struggle to comprehend at times.
      Persona 5’s animations and art style were stylized around 30 frames per second. The animators clearly used the lower framerate to help stylize animations to be weightier and more suited to the comic book/manga-esque feeling the game’s user interface has.
      P5R looks okay in 60 FPS, gamers get a fucking massive hard on the higher a framerate is regardless of context so of course, they adore it. However when you compare it side by side to 30 FPS gameplay, a lot of animations feel way floatier and lack the same impact as they did in 30, moving either too fast or too smoothly to the point where they not only don’t have the same expressive style, but they move so fast that you barely have the time to comprehend them.
      TL;DR: P5 and P5R were ran in 30 FPS on purpose for the sake of ensuring the articulately designed animations made by their art team to fit the style and artwork more.

    • @Ligytdr
      @Ligytdr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JackisJack_ Eh, for that exact reason, many of the animations that did not fit well were kept at 30FPS in the higher FPS ports... Dialogue bars, the infiltration results screen... and more. And they blend in just fine
      Even though P5 was heavily stylized around 30FPS, it wasn't a justification to not put some extra effort onto what's able to run at 60 without looking strange (literally most of the stuff apart the UI) to do so
      sure, some attacks and part of the UI that was unlocked do look floatier, like you said, but I highly doubt that and a few other effects not being faithful were the sole reason to avoid a 60FPS upgrade, even when the PS4 Pro came out, as Catherine Full Body and other Atlus games just never got 60FPS upgrades, either, it was just Atlus being Atlus
      and again, the rest of P5 looks absolutely fine in 60FPS, so even if they took what you said in consideration, it's quite a bad decision over so little effects. At least it's how I see it

    • @JackisJack_
      @JackisJack_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ligytdr I can almost guarantee you it was entirely a stylized choice. Framerate in stylized animation isn’t the same as getting 350 FPS in a game of Apex so that you get the fastest response time. Stylized animation is about appealing to the human eye with an artistic vision that the creators had in mind, and P5 did that beautifully in 30 FPS. That’s why the game is almost uncannily smooth in 60.
      Ask literally any art or animation major on the face of this planet and they will tell you that framerate doesn’t equal quality. P5 is one of the many examples of that. It has nothing to do with laziness lol.

      I'm glad they went for a stable framerate rather than higher resolution you would not notice much

    I love the way that the obvious changes between original P5 and Royal are described as 'only noticeable side by side', and then the lesser differences visible in the Switch version are seemingly massive issues. Oh Digital Foundry, never change.

      Obviously you gonna notice it because the video pointing it out
      When playing on the device, you wouldnt notice it. Even if you do, youre actively looking out for it

      @@pretentiouscarrot4292 Um okay? For the record I played P5R on Xbox and Steam Deck, not Switch. My comment was an observation on how tech analysts can't often see the wood from the trees. I hope you eventually grow out of your console-war phase.

      @@KenBladehart You do realise your comment essentially applies to the majority of analyses produced by the likes of Digital Foundry, right? My point was the the discernible differences between, say, textures shown at 1:55 and colour grading show at 2:13 are far more obvious to an average viewer than the differences between the Switch and other versions (see the baked shadows comparison at 3:57, which hardly anyone would ever notice in motion), especially if they're viewing on the in-built screen. Yet you wouldn't know that from the way the analyst described these things.

    Is DF going to cover the new Tactics Ogre and compare it with the originals?

    It's interesting how whenever steam deck is mentioned everybody pretends that only OLED switch exists while in reality LCD versions are more popular 🤔

      He specifically talked about the OLED Switch. Also who tf buys a non OLED Switch nowadays. Waste of money. OLED is a huge upgrade
