It really depends what the relay is being used for. I’ll give you two examples: 1. Let’s say you want some new fog lights to always come on with your headlights. You would use a power wire from your headlights to trigger the fog light relay (“positive trigger” on pin 86), which would flick your fog lights on whenever the headlights are powered up. 2. Now let’s instead pretend you want a toggle switch inside the cab of your truck to turn the new fog lights on. Using a negative trigger relay, you could keep all the power wires and relay under your hood. Then simply run one negative trigger wire (“negative trigger” from pin 86) inside the cab of your truck, to a switch. The other side of the switch could ground to any metal under your dashboard. By doing this, you won’t need to splice into any wires inside your truck, and there is no risk of the trigger wire rubbing on anything and popping a fuse, because the trigger is on the ground circuit. So in short “it depends”. :) hope that helped a bit.
I have Honda Civic 2015, I am installing a right side camera and want to have the camera activate when using the right turn signal. Hello sir, thanks a lot for this! Question; I'm changing the heater in my 1971 Triumph to an all electric one. Originally it had a switched ground, but no relais or fuse. Thank you for this video. It's got the most info I need so far and the clearest and most precise explanations yet. I need help with a replacement 5 wire (+,--, park, high-and low-speeds) Nissan wiper motor that seems to work only when high and low are fed from the ground. I've heard others say that this is the difference with Nissan from other wiper motors (high and low are positive), Is this true and can I use a negative trigger relay for this? i'd be grateful for any help.
I only have one port coming out of an upfitter switch that I’d like to wire up to control ground. Can I combine the ground coming in and the ground going out?
Is a different relay used for a negative trigger system or is it down to the wiring? Am I correct in my thinking that the switch is turning off the earth to relay, thus completing the circuit?
Neither is better or worse. They each have different uses. Check out this video where I explain it a bit further th-cam.com/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zOymebH6QObbKMCE
Thank you for the great info! I am looking to build a fused relay to control several accessories through the use of those 5 pin rocker switches (probably 4-6). Great video thanks for making it. One question on this 5 pin negative switch relay. Can i use another accessory on pin 87a and it will switch between the two? I am trying to figure out how to best install a switch on my third brake light so that i can bypass the installed flasher module just incase i need to disable it and revert back to normal third brake light operation. The negative ground switch seems like i lot less work if i want to put that switch somewhere on my dashboard. Cheers.
That sounds like it will work, as long as you are okay with one of them being active at all times. There would be no way to turn them both off, but it sounds like you don’t need that. So I’d say you’re good to go!
If the negative trigger wire is a signal from a ECU, am I safe? Trying to add brake lights to my bike, but the tail light has 3 leads. +/-/trigger ground. the + and - are for the lamp but it gets a ground signal to kick on the brake light from the ECU I believe.
My question is..do you have a video, or where do you put a THREE way switch? Top (brass) is ground. Middle is for lightbar (led rocker light PLUS lightbar is ON) Bottom is battery (led rocker light AND lightbar off) But still need to operate highbeam as normal But how do i add it into a negative switched headlights on my car.
Ok..I've got a 1992 Harley Davidson sportster..I've taken off the stock front forks and installed a 6 inch longer springer front end ..now for my situation..I'm using a rectangle car headlight ..didn't think of it initially but the headlight is drawing too much amps for this system..how would I wire in a duel headlight relay system..small rocker switches on system..don't want to melt harness,alternator/charging system..
Here is how I would do it: - buy a 4 or 5 pin relay (doesn’t matter which) - connect the factory Harley 12v+ headlight wire to pin 86 on the relay. - connect pin 85 to a ground - connect pin 30 to the battery with a fuse in between (fuse size would be based on how many amps the headlight draws) - connect pin 87 as the power feed to your new headlight. Then when you turn on your headlights, your factory Harley wiring will tell your relay to turn on, which will pop on your fancy new light! Good luck! Hope it works out!
Check out this one I made. th-cam.com/video/0h_ZbIBHM-M/w-d-xo.html. I think you could use 1 bulb, that has two filaments, and your factory low/high beam switch with a little creativity.

When I'm installing a new component (light bar) on my truck I have the option of Positive or Negative trigger. What is the deciding factor on which option to choose?
Either will work if wired correctly. It mostly depends where you will be mounting the relay. Sometimes people don’t want to have a positive trigger wire running into their vehicle, because it could rub on something and short out. A negative wire will just turn your light on if the wire shorts out. Negative triggers also generally have less wiring because one side of the switch goes right to ground, which could be right next to the switch. Positive trigger needs a full power wire on each side of the switch.
Please help me, Im installing alarm on my car, the alarm output is positive for right/left signals but the switch on car only works with negative pulses. Now i did change the output using relay. The problem is that when the signal lights receive pulse, it will keep blinking until another pulse. So when i pr3ss lock button, it receives pulse and blinking never ends. Suppose to be once for lock and twice for unlock. How do repeat the pulses coming from alarm so when I press lock, it triggers once to flash and 2nd time to turn off flashers. Thank tou
Hi. I have subaru forester sg, and orginal light is h4, one light is on L/H beam, and I heard when feeds over minus, or I can use this electrical circuit to connect the led bar?
It's still okay if you put the switch at + wire right?.. And should I add one more wire ground to battery if I want to connect the 87a pin to another components?
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for. Should the fuse be above or below the rated amp for the source? I'm installing a USB charger that is 6.4 amps. Is a 10amp fuse okay or should I go to 7.5 or even lower?
Solid question! One example that comes to mind could be a car horn. If you look at a factory wiring diagram for most horns on normal cars (maybe a 90 Jeep Wrangler for example?), they have the ground wire (pin 85 in my video) running all the way up the inside of the steering column. Then when you push the horn button in the center of the Jeep steering wheel, it grounds that horn wire to the steering column itself which activates the horn. Beep beep. I see two benefits to wiring it this way: 1: Steering columns have a lot of moving parts and very little space inside. If something breaks this ground wire in the steering column and grounds it out, the worst case scenario is the horn will beep. It won’t blow fuses or light fires or do anything scary. Unless of course you’re afraid of horns. 2: If you were to wire it the opposite way (using the pin 86 side of the relay), you would need a positive wire running into the steering column, up to your horn button, and then another back down the steering column to your relay. As I mentioned above, space inside the steering column is very limited. So one wire is better than two. It’s also TWO 12v power wires that need to be protected from the spinning parts inside the steering column. If one (or both) were to become damaged, it would ground out on the steering column and cause short-circuit electrical issues. Hopefully that helps & makes sense?
Depends what your goal is, because when the relay turns on, 87a goes dead. So 87 or 87A gets power depending on whether the relay is on or off. But they never have power at the same time.
I love your videos and have enjoyed being a subscriber to your channel. I have also watched your fan wiring video and I have a question for you. I have a ground activated radiator fan through a relay. No thermostat, just a switch. My toggle switch has three terminals and it has a warning light in the toggle that I want to use. I think I have the fan wired properly and everything seems to work as it should. I have my 85 ground wire going to the center terminal on the three terminal switch and I have a ground wire on one of the side terminals. Unfortunately, when I switch the toggle and turn on the fan, the warning light on the toggle does not light and I cannot figure out how to get it to do so. I noticed in this video it appears that you are also using a switch that lights when the unit is switched on, but unless I am mistaken, your switch light is also not working when the fan is on. Can you tell me how we can solve this problem? Thanks so much! Lin
Im trying to wire up my fuel pump and my ecu im using has a negative ground for trigger. Does it matter if 85 or 86 gets the trigger if I follow your wiring example?
So I plan to use this on my e-bike instead of a power control module. The motor is 24 volt 250 w and the rated current on the motor is 13 amps..... So a 30 amp relay is plenty adequate, right?

@@jeremyhanna3852 - technically the ground should be 85 and your + trigger from the auxbeam switch should go to 86. That being said, you can swap those and it will also work just fine. It’s something that doesn’t matter except to wiring nerds like myself.

It sounds like you have a negative on Pin 85 and 86, which will make the relay not work. If you copy the directions in the video, you should have no trouble. I also have another method here: th-cam.com/video/W2Mr2Zgv1Ck/w-d-xo.html
Got a question. Are there any advantages for using negative trigger vs a positive trigger? Which of them is safer? Currently i am using a negative trigger for my fuel pump and starter.
They are both perfectly safe if wired right with appropriate fuses and wire sizes. They each have benefits. It really depends what you’re doing with them. Some people like negative triggers because it allows them to only run a negative wire into the car and ground it right to a dash. Others want a positive trigger because it’s necessary for controlling that type of circuit they have. Like everything in life “it depends”.
@@WiringRescue Thank you for the reply. For me, i feel much safer running a negative wire through the firewall. And if there is already an existing circuit and just to add a relay i use the positive trigger. Thank you for your feedback. Makes me subscribed.

@@WiringRescue switch here was commected to 85... 86 and 30 were connected to positive... very helpful... about to understand well... thanks
Hi great video ......can you use 87a to have a light inside the cab to let you know the electric fan is on?
I have Honda Civic 2015, I am installing a right side camera and want to have the camera activate when using the right turn signal. I am using use the wire from the light switch that is for the right turn signal. I identified the wire, but it has 12 volts when the turn signal if off and drops to 0 volt when is on, how can I use a negative to positive output using a relay? By the way, thanks for the great video!
How would you connect a 5 prong momentary button to this set up. Great video by the way 👍🏽 I learned a lot thanks
Is there a difference between a negative trigger relay and a positive trigger relay
Yes - I made a video all about it. Check this out. th-cam.com/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N0po2wpVu0TTfjBu
Can you use an OEM style switch when you wire this way? So that the switch lights up like all the other dash lights?
Absolutely! You just need to figure out how the OEM switch works. Sometimes they work in weird ways. But generally speaking - yes! Try it out!
Hello sir, thanks a lot for this! Question; I'm changing the heater in my 1971 Triumph to an all electric one. Originally it had a switched ground, but no relais or fuse. I want to incorporate them to be safe, but use the standard power wire from the old heater. This is a switched 12v, would that be OK? I do not need to use the heater without the car running anyway as it will just drain the battery
Is there a way to negatively switch an illuminated 5pin rocker switch?
Thank you for this video. It's got the most info I need so far and the clearest and most precise explanations yet. I need help with a replacement 5 wire (+,--, park, high-and low-speeds) Nissan wiper motor that seems to work only when high and low are fed from the ground. I've heard others say that this is the difference with Nissan from other wiper motors (high and low are positive), Is this true and can I use a negative trigger relay for this? i'd be grateful for any help.
Sadly I am totally unfamiliar with that wiper setup so I don’t think I could be of much help.
I only have one port coming out of an upfitter switch that I’d like to wire up to control ground. Can I combine the ground coming in and the ground going out?
Does the BLACK wire from relay go to POS on switch; and GROUND on switch go to GROUND source?
Is a different relay used for a negative trigger system or is it down to the wiring? Am I correct in my thinking that the switch is turning off the earth to relay, thus completing the circuit?
You are completely correct. It’s the same relay, just controlling the ground side of the circuit instead of the power side.
can i rewire my all car with negative trigger relays? wich is better positive or negative trigger relays?
Neither is better or worse. They each have different uses. Check out this video where I explain it a bit further th-cam.com/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zOymebH6QObbKMCE
Thank you for the great info! I am looking to build a fused relay to control several accessories through the use of those 5 pin rocker switches (probably 4-6). I like the idea of negative triggering because, as i understand it, it means there is only power going through the switch when it is on. That said, i am having a hard time figuring out how you would wire the switches themselves. Any help you could provide would be greatly welcomed. Thanks again for the great content.
can i connect my gronds to a chassis ground?

I’m looking to wire a livewell timer in my boat. Single switch with on position off and timer position. I believe this has answered my question but not sure if I would use pin 87a for the on switch position??
The switch on off button. The negative cable you connect with what pin? In or out source?
If the negative trigger wire is a signal from a ECU, am I safe? Trying to add brake lights to my bike, but the tail light has 3 leads. +/-/trigger ground. the + and - are for the lamp but it gets a ground signal to kick on the brake light from the ECU I believe.
I need to make a car clutch that disconnects (a 12v ground circuit) when the pedal is pressed can it be done with a relay? Pls help..
My question is..do you have a video, or where do you put a THREE way switch?
Top (brass) is ground.
Middle is for lightbar (led rocker light PLUS lightbar is ON)
Bottom is battery (led rocker light AND lightbar off)
But still need to operate highbeam as normal
But how do i add it into a negative switched headlights on my car.
Mean I put the ground onto the negative in the battery?
The ground can go to the chassis of the vehicle if the chassis is grounded. Otherwise, the negative on the battery would be the best option.
Here is how I would do it:
- buy a 4 or 5 pin relay (doesn’t matter which)
- connect the factory Harley 12v+ headlight wire to pin 86 on the relay.
- connect pin 85 to a ground
- connect pin 30 to the battery with a fuse in between (fuse size would be based on how many amps the headlight draws)
- connect pin 87 as the power feed to your new headlight.
Then when you turn on your headlights, your factory Harley wiring will tell your relay to turn on, which will pop on your fancy new light! Good luck! Hope it works out!
@@WiringRescue Thanks ..
So a second relay then for high beam circuit..??
Is there a duel relay made ..or just use 2 relays ..
Check out this one I made. th-cam.com/video/0h_ZbIBHM-M/w-d-xo.html. I think you could use 1 bulb, that has two filaments, and your factory low/high beam switch with a little creativity.
This video would be even greater if you had one of those finger pointing thingy.
I agree. I need to step up my laser pointer-game for sure.
Can you use that switch to ground 2 relays?
Can you ground back to the battery?

Do you have any thing talking about 40/30 relays
I have a remote control lock module and want to connect the trunk opener. The cable from the module sends negative 300mA. My relay says 30A/40A. Can it be that -300mA is not enough to trigger such relay? Do I need a smaler amp relay?
How would this work if you have an LED light that has 3 wires coming out of it? It’s 90watts & runs on 24v
Hi I connected my rock lights to dome lights using a relay. Battery 12 v to pin 30, dome light from car to pin 86 , 85 to ground and 87 to dome lights. What if u have a 20 amp switch and my fan im running is 15 amps can i just run switch without relay since switch is a 20 amp switch?
When I'm installing a new component (light bar) on my truck I have the option of Positive or Negative trigger. What is the deciding factor on which option to choose?
Either will work if wired correctly. It mostly depends where you will be mounting the relay. Sometimes people don’t want to have a positive trigger wire running into their vehicle, because it could rub on something and short out. A negative wire will just turn your light on if the wire shorts out. Negative triggers also generally have less wiring because one side of the switch goes right to ground, which could be right next to the switch. Positive trigger needs a full power wire on each side of the switch.
@@WiringRescue Excellent, you confirmed all I could muster up about the 2 circuits. Thank you.

Is there power going through the 85 wire in this setup?
Why or when would you ever want a negative trigger?
Solid question! One example that comes to mind could be a car horn. If you look at a factory wiring diagram for most horns on normal cars (maybe a 90 Jeep Wrangler for example?), they have the ground wire (pin 85 in my video) running all the way up the inside of the steering column. Then when you push the horn button in the center of the Jeep steering wheel, it grounds that horn wire to the steering column itself which activates the horn. Beep beep.
I see two benefits to wiring it this way:
1: Steering columns have a lot of moving parts and very little space inside.
Click it a few more times just to make sure it works.
Can i connect the 87a to the accesories with positive supply?
Depends what your goal is, because when the relay turns on, 87a goes dead. So 87 or 87A gets power depending on whether the relay is on or off. But they never have power at the same time.
Can this method work if the ground wire is 12v+ when idle but turns to ground when engaged?
Lin
Do you have a video with a 5 pole relay connected to a 3+ pole switch?
Im trying to wire up my fuel pump and my ecu im using has a negative ground for trigger. Does it matter if 85 or 86 gets the trigger if I follow your wiring example?
It is generally accepted that 85 is the ground, but it will likely work fine if you swap 85&86.
So I plan to use this on my e-bike instead of a power control module. The motor is 24 volt 250 w and the rated current on the motor is 13 amps..... So a 30 amp relay is plenty adequate, right?
Can I use 18g for grounds ?
Ok im going to try explain this the best i can i have a digital switich from auxbeam in my jeep that powers my lights and other stuff but i cant for the life of me figure out to turm my eletric fans on let me explain the fans are controlled off a temp sender that when it hits 190° it gounds and turns on the fans standard set up put i also added a extra wire to the temp sensor that a has a switch on it when its open nothing happens close the switch it creates a path to ground and no matter the temp the fan is on thats how it works the auxbeam ditigal swithch panel only supplys power to turn things on it has soild state relays in it im trying to figure if there is a way to use a power circuit from the switch panel threw a relay to create a ground im thinking gound pin 30 then pin 87 to fan wire
Ground sire pin 86 then power from switch panel to pin 85
Do you think that will work i figire when you put power threw switch side of the relay it will create a ground on the load side of the relay
I completely understand what you are doing and saying. And yes, your plan should work!
@@WiringRescue thxs for a quick answer on a older video I am still going to test the theory tonight to make sure the theory is sound
