  • This is a video about using the Clarkson Drill Grinding attachment made by the Clarkson Company in England to grind 4 facet drill points. I have produced the video because I couldn't find any video about the attachment and I wondered if I was using it correctly? Hopefully there are people on the internet who know more about it than I do? Please note at the end of the video there is some information about the device and links to download the handbook and more information at about 4 facet drill points if you are interested. Many thanks for looking.

Hello George. Thanks for producing this video. I don't have the drill grinding attachment, but I am trying to build something along these lines for smaller drills, so this is very helpful. Ian.

Thanks George, I shall give that a go when I next sharpen a batch of drills. Also thanks ever so much for the grinding wheel details as I was having a nightmare tracking down a modern one.

Thankyou George for producing this, very informative. I'm in the hunt for a good tool grinder and the clarkson seems to be a very nice machine to get, any bad points to look for?

Hi David, thanks for the comment. The Clarksons were well made and solid and you can still find bargins. Obvious things to look for are the the cross-slide look for play left to right and back and front, if the cross-slide is badly worn then I would say walk away, there is only so much play that can be taken up. Also the spindle, ie play and noise but you can get replacement bearings quite cheaply. Best of luck!

Hi, I would always say give it a try and after a few iterations see what turns up? If you have the Universal Head then this may be the place to start as you can pretty easily adapt an ER collet chuck to fit one and it will cover a range of drill sizes. The difficult bit is the 2-flute indexing plate and indexing mwthod but the design is pretty basic. All the Clarkson original parts can be seen in the various handbooks on the Bedroom Workshop site as well as the angle, and setup. Hope this gives you enough encouragement to have a go! Best of luck, look forward to hearing your experiences.

4 facet drills are no big deal , a split point is better
