  • This is a great clip featuring Doug Webb and Greg Fishman from their clinic at PM Woodwind on May 5, 2016. They are playing "These Things" by Doug Webb. As an added bonus, young tenor saxophonist Ben Solomon, who is currently playing with Wallace Roney, sits in along with Mike Allemana on guitar.

1st time i heard ben i was doing a clinic at new trier HS and he stood up and took a solo and i asked jim warrick (the director) if he was a graduating senior (assuming so) he said, no...he's a freshman. ben already had that sound. he's a super nice guy and obviously has great talent. i look forward to him continuing to find his own voice and think he will have a wonderful career. love hearing young talent like him. keep it up ben! doug and greg are already well known, highly respected, and are great cats also!!! solid lineup of great talent!!! and PM Woodwinds, what an awesome place! go see paul maslin if u haven't already. YEA CHICAGO!!!!!!!

I always prefer someone with their own sound than a copy. because a copy will always have the original in your ear

Man, this is incredible, How can someone sound so similar to master Coltrane?

Not taking anything away from Doug or Greg, but Ben..... Damn.

So was I thinking the same thing but like this LOL - Not to take anything away from Ben or Greg but Doug DAMN. He had a theme going, and then he 'Breckered' off and hit the theme again, and just kept it rolling like that. A crazy command of 'slide slipping' combined with classic bebop lines - holy crap man.
And yeah, Ben - whomever he is - freaking Coltrane incarnate - WTF. The extensions on his chords and then not letting it resolve for like bar after bar, LMAO, Coltrane baby.

While all 3 of these players are great, Mr. Fishman has that combination of deep swing and knowing harmonic/melodic invention that just dances through his solo. Especially without the benefit of a drummer driving the beat, Mr. Fishman displays his internal drummer that always knows where the downbeat is. Combined with his masterful harmonic knowledge, Mr. Fishman delivers, as usual, an eloquent and profound expression of post-be-bop jazz. His mind and fingers are one.

Ben Solomon is such a bad dude! Wish I had started studying with Greg Fishman when I was super young like he did.

That's amazing facility and Coltrane likeness. There's almost no semblance of the time being locked in though.

All great players! However, Ben has a certain sound and note selection that makes him especially noteworthy (pun intended)!

Best part is that they are making each other laugh. But Mike Allemana is leading the pace. You dig?

Sure. Of course, you're right. Fast don't mean a thing....except if you're a monster player like these 3, then it's not about fast. If all you heard was fast, then maybe you ought to listen again.

Totally agree. On the first two solos I heard fast, I heard notes within the changes and outside the changes but not much else. Greg F. had the most musical and interesting solo to my ears and I really like Doug Webb"s stuff.
