    Couple of quick questions since youtube isn't doing the pictures justice:
    Angle on the D4s looks slightly different, is that the case? The 7200 shot looks a little more flush on than the 7100 which could make the ridges blend in (all the high points would line up, basically). A slight angle change could alter those textures quite a bit. Again, could be youtube's rendering making it look slightly off.
    Were these all done in jpg, raw, noise reduction on, sharpness settings, etc? I have read the NR in the 7200 is pretty aggressive, could account for some of it.The noise levels in the box label one look different (better in the 7200) I only ask because they are labelled jpg. Could be how it looks on youtube though.
    It may be possible to run the 7100 through the 7200's processing via capture whatever it's called now, see if it ends in similar results. I'll see if I can find the thread on it after I get some stuff done outside. :)

      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John Mayfield they were all done in compressed RAW, High Jpegs showed the same results.
      I am however viewing these for speed in PREVIEW, because VIEW NXD is slow as crap to move around in
      no noise reduction of sharpness. Should be no diff. in angle, unless i leaned on the tripod, which i dont recall doing.
      they are labeled Jpg, and are max conversions from RAW with no tweaking, they appear the SAME in RAW in both view NXI and NXD
      you ARE right on the lowered NOISE on the label, however you'll notice that the detail is greater on the D7100,
      also if i had to blow these shots in post by 2 stops 4 stops, things get UGLY on the D7200 pic.
      But these are big time shot zooms, and its CERTAINLY pixel peeping at its "worst" (?) Hehehheheh

      Plus the angles of the D4S are different thus making 50%+ of this comparison video pointless.

      619RobdoG I actually think the point of this video was to compare how under ordinary and/or common setting usages how these 2 body styles *For the Cost* perform.
      I'm a novice so of course some may say that I'm just not savvy enough to grasp either the "un fair performance analysis" or "EYE" for the craft yet.
      Well if that's true then forgive this commentary. But the Jewel that I find in this Video and *Most* of his videos is that he REALLY identifies the NEED TO KNOW INFO on a particular gear/product.
      In this video (as in most) he accentuates on :
      1)What is the composition you are trying to achieve
      2)How are you going about to manipulate your light source to create an Awesome Image
      3)Know your gear's capicities and limitations in order to Exceed in my developing skill set.
      4) Just get out there and shoot.
      The key take aways:
      (a)Unless you are specifically dedicated to Sports and low light shoots there is no need to upgrade from the 7100 to the cost of the 7200.
      (b)These Camera's essentially carry the same perfomance values once you factor in the specific design differences of the 7200.
      (c) Weight of 7200 obviously will combat affect of a lighter body.
      (d) shadow details, which is why we go porn crazy for our perfect glass.
      With proper creative accentuating lighting adds the Depth & texture that will ultimately expose the beauty of your framed scene; or the horror of my skillset.
      sorry so wordy I just think my Boi got a raw review. imo.....

    ken I love your stuff but I gotta say a few things here. I agree with you when you said somewhere that if you had a 7100 that it would be a waste of money to go to a 7200 due to it not being a big upgrade but I don't have a 7100 and I bought a 7200 and was very happy with th results right out of the box. this is a great camera buddy. my cuz has a 7100 and we did a little testing of our own and although both performed beautifully, the 7200 was better in every shot. the video you put out, I was following and I thought you were making a mistake identifying the low points because the 7200 was easy the winner. just to give it a fair shake I would love to see you do it again full out instead of a shelf in a store. almost all my gear comes from your recommendations but this one I think deserves a redo. I heard you say in one vid, not to even ask you about the 7200 as if you had a huge resentment against this camera. I get it that your and others high expectations were not met due to there not being enough or bigger upgrades or changes for the next model in the 7000 line but the camera stands on its own and I also learned that due to the different sensors and stuff that shooting identical setups and lenses makes no sense since they are different. anyway I'm very happy with mine, I don't pick it up as much since I got my 810 but still grab it whenever I go shoot someplace and always use it. so, thanks, love ya brother and so much enjoy your vids.

    Thank you for the effort in evaluating these differences. Now, on to another issue that at least one other person and I are having with the D7200: we shoot flash photography in club lighting. I had hoped to use the D7200 up around ISO 6400 with flash dialed back quite a lot; however, overexposures were a near certainty in both manual and aperture priority modes at anything below f/5.6 or so. While experimenting with getting the flash under control, I found that even *.nef images were hard to process, to retain even transitions of light across curved surfaces like faces; Jpegs were a total loss at high ISO, with very coarse transitions. I've backed my process back down the range I'm accustomed to with the D700: ISO 1600, 1/80, f/3.5 or so, and TTL flash around -1eV. Frankly, image quality is still not as good as the D700, even though this is a 24 megapixel camera with much newer technology all around; nor does it really autofocus that much better in low light. Yes, I understand now that the D7200 isn't a great performer in that ISO range- the point is, it's really never going to be much of a flash camera as far as I can tell. If you have the time and energy to play with flash, or if you're hearing this problem from others, it would be nice to get your take on it. I'll be borrowing a D7100 to compare its flash performance myself. Thanks again, Bob Topp

    I need some quick advice/help... both cameras have almost 19,000 shutter count.... the D7100 body only for 280$ plus shipping or the D7200 with 2 32gb PNY elite memory cards and Vello battery grip for 400$ plus shipping... which would you get? Which is the better deal? Thank You

    Have you used auto focus or manual focus?
    I switched from Nikon D70 to Nikon D7200. Done some tests with the D7100 before deciding to buy the D7200. Manual focus helped me to realise that the D7200 was way better than his older brother. Both of them had the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DC EX HSM OS, Photos with ISO 320, F 2.8 at 1/60 shutter speed.

    Thank you for your tutorials I enjoy your, to the point attitude. D7200 or D5500??? I courently own a D3100 and I want to up grade but dont want to go full frame because Im broke $. Any suggestions or insight from of these two cameras would be helpful. I am open open to other options as well just keep in mind cost and lenses. Looking for better low light focusing, clarity .I do portraits , family, kids sports. Also do you think mirrorless will eventually take over like DSLR did to 35mm?
    Thank you.

    In looking at the review again, The D7100 has more angle to it then the D7200, so it's not going to look the same. You can tell by looking at the reveal around the lense caps. The D7200 is more of a straight on shot. IMO, 99% of the people won't notice the differences in the photos anyways.

    Dear Mr. Angry Photographer. I fucking love you. Thank you for making this video. I was trying to figure out whether or not to shell out the extra $300-$400 for a D7200 over the D7100 (upgrading from D3300). I mostly do portraiture and headshots and shoot with strobes at relatively low ISO. Your thoughts really opened up my mind and my local camera store has $100 off the D7100 at the moment, bringing it down to a very tempting yet manageable $829 before taxes. You've helped me make my mind up and I can't thank you enough for it.

    I live in Finland, its dark here most part of the year. I must say going to be my first Dslr ownership. I have been borrowing gears from friends, most of them have canon dslr and kit lens. I am willing to get serious into photography, at least learn. I would like to shoot portraits, landscape and bla bla like everyone, but i do want to shoot guys playing football and dogs as-well. What would you suggest D7100 or D7200?

  • @fredericklfaulkneriii7392

    Looking to upgrade from a D5100. I mostly shoot things that don't move - architecture, landscape, macro, so buffer isn't an issue. I was curious about the 7200 lack of the anti-aliasing filter on the sensor and whether that really improved detail capture (glass aside). After watching this video I have to say my enthusiasm for the 7200 is a bit squashed. Refurbed 7100 and spend the difference on some of the "must have" glass??

    Just 2 days ago I got d7100 and d7200 1week earlier. I tried d7200 and it was nice, but once I got d7100 and did "lab tests" I was hugely surprised that D7200 NEF 100% match with D7100! Noise character, shadows, EVERYTHING!
    What Nikon did? They wipe away noise in price of details. And they actually _cheat_ because their NEF plugin from website does same thing to D7200 (i.e. stronger noise reduction), but does not do that to D7100 NEFs.
    They also literally destroyed LCD top screen, it is not useful anymore.
    My guess is that they will return LCD back, add articulated TFT and (probably) GPS to next 7300 for same price.
    Shame on you, Nikon! Thinking of switch to Canon. At least, they do honest upgrades and warranty cares for their customers better. Plus lower L lens.

    I finally get what you were talking about when you pointed out the detail of the ridges of the lens cap.
    Embarrassingly, I could not understand why I would want the best ISO and low light capability capability for birds. The shadow detail that gives the richness of texture is of greater importance for wildlife.
    Thank you for that info.
    How it all plays out against the higher higher buffer, faster autofocus, and lower shutter lag for wildlife photography is still an unknown for me. It seems that the D7200 is designed for wildlife almost as much as sports. How much of an improvement in real time and in the field is an unknown to me. For 99% of the people 99% of the time, The D7100 is just as good as a D7200.
    Does Wildlife photography fit into that 1% ?
    If it does, I should look at the D7200 as a viable option ( maybe the D7200 should have been called a D7100 S & W for sports & wildlife??? I Don't Know. LOL)
    If for wildlife, there is no noticeable difference for wildlife photography, Then I want to get a D7100 for sure. No need to look further.
    I still haven't found deals as good as you have mentioned but your review might have influenced the availability of the good deals on the D7100. Like $480 for a new refurb as of 4 weeks ago? $630 is about as good as I can find from reputable dealers as of today/yesterday.

      Specifically, I need a D7200 (or a D7100 if it is as good at wildlife)
      A mediocre ... Daily use lens?.... Something for when I am not using a big lens
      And a better (but affordable) wildlife lens.
      If you know of one that I should look into, Let me know.
      My thoughts on the wildlife lens was the 200 - 500mm Nikon but it weighs almost twice as much as my tent. LOL
      I know, That range will come at a cost of weight (and money)
      Currently I have a P900 so that much weight seems like a lot for a lot less effective range (24 - 2000mm effective range but with a much smaller sensor)

    Wow! That's a great and informative review! The D7100 is hundreds of bucks less than the D7200 even with lenses! It gets even better looking at used versions with low shutter count on eBay. I actually don't imagine I will ever need ISO above 3000 for what I do. I truly appreciate your no nonsense reviews! I've subscribed.

    This is so true. I was looking to buy a D7200 because what kept me off the D7100 was the lack of WiFi. I was doing my research online and saw this video. I thought to myself why not go find out. So I went to my local camera store and tested the 2 cameras. Files below, all shot in manual mode, ISO 800, shutter 60 auto white balance on sigma 18-33 at F2.5 at 35mm. Below are the files, both Raw and JPG.
    Thanks for saving me man!!

      Theoria Apophasis No, didn't. I was so ready to get the D7200 until I saw your video. If only nikon had a different good APS-C sensor that has everything I wanted. (must include Wifi) At this point, I'm back to square one. Find a good APS-C camera that has everything I want or start saving for D750. I'm gonna test the pentax K-3ii when it comes out.

      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well there exists no such beast under $1500 :)
      but its close, .....the wifi feature is a bit dinky, most dont care about it, some do, but its not all that great regardless.
      You can get an AWESOME as new D7100 for $650 on Ebay, and youll be incredibly happy.
      The value of that camera is wholly unmatched, and Nikon is full of crap to call it "advanced amateur" camera, ...its all Pro.
      ive got the BEST, and the BEST isnt even 4% more than what the D7100 can do.

      Theoria Apophasis You are correct, there are some cheap D7100 on eBay. One of my reasons for starting to look at the D750 is cuz its decent enough for videos. With the introduction of 60p and the flat profile on the D7200 I was kinda liking that, but no more Lol. We will see.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, thats a consideration for some,....The flat profile doesnt impress me a bit, nor do i ever want to use same.......its a valid too for some,......but you can do that in photoshop too
      LOL.

    This situation makes my head explode. I have just started to make money with photography and am willing to change my body (I have a Nikon D90). The problem is the shops proposing D7100 are all not known (even on amazone). All the big shops I am using do not have it. They have the D7200. So I can not trust the shops that sell D7100 and this video demoralizes me about the D7200. What to do??

      I own both D7100 and D7200. It is a fact that D7100 has some advantage on describing shadows. Just a small edge. In general for everyday photography, D7200 is better. This is why I use D7100 always with a superwide Tokina 11-16 for landscapes etc and do not push the Iso over 800 and on the other hand I always shoot my D7200 with Sigma 17-50 for almost everything else without caring much about Iso (do not go over 1600 usually, though)

    Angry you have done a great job with the explanation in this video, on the whole people if you want to buy a brand new camera get the D7200 as it has way more to offer then the D7100, but if you want to save money get a good used D7100 and that's when you are really saving money.
    The D7200 offers much better autofocus system, flat picture profiling, auto iso control in video mode way better low light shooting, faster buffer i think theses points should be enough to explain why a D7200 is a way better camera then the D7100 and not to forget the wifi and nfc options as well: Happy Shooting

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shalim Kamran D7200 has much worse output, SOny sensor, D7100 has a Toshiba sensor. Also the D7100 has much better low ISO shadow detail
      and a much lower price. Most people arent looking for video features or shooting low light, but those that are, ive recommended the D7200
      for everyone else (90%+), the D7100 is the superior and better buy
      diff people diff needs.

    • @shalimkamran3713
      @shalimkamran3713 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, but use your Flat picture profile to set what type of pictures you want straight from you camera, the time lapse video options are amazing, longer battery life you cant ignore all these on the D7200, Sony is leading the market these days with their mirror less cameras and that's why Nikon went in agreement to get their sensors. But yes if you are just a portrait and picnic photographer use the D7100, you want to be creative and go beyond in exploring your level of creativity get a D7200.

    • @shalimkamran3713
      @shalimkamran3713 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way i have both D7100 and D7200 with me and use them simultaneously, so know exactly what they are and their capability.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nikon gets sensors from 4 diff sources, Sony, Toshiba, Matsushita (now panasonic) and a 4th company they wont name
      so thats not entirely true.
      Sony isnt leading anything, they were downgraded to JUNK STATUS last year
      and FORBES gave them a F credit rating.
      "get a D7200" ???? Ive owned all Nikons, and currently own 9 of them, I dont own the D7200 for many valid reasons, its a poor value, it sucks at lower ISO
      and it sucks arse in rendition. The Toshiba sensor D7100 has far superior output
      If you want the best, get a D810, ive got a pair of them.

    una comparacion de solo 2 fotos??? en realidad la segunda la veo mucho mas definida para la d7200.- en toda la foto, la primera si es notable la diferencia de detalle. pero no se puede resumir una comparativa al resultado de dos todos, que puede fallar el AF o moverse la camara y quitar definicion..

  • @ryanlewis2474

    Concert Photography: could you get away with 7100 for most low lit clubs (with wide open lenses) or is it a no brainer to go for 7200

    • @andreik3096
      @andreik3096 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'd just go full frame for low light concert work w/o flash, with sigma 35mm f1.4. d7100 has too bad banding at iso 2000 in dark areas. and i'd go for d7200 in low light for -3ev AF and deep buffer, so you can stay and f1.4 and have more chances of sharper focus in a serie of 18 raw.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis

      Paul Nelson its not "there" at the level of the sensor, to be certain, however some Uber-nerds claim this can be tweaked in the firmware a BIT......, but the AD converter and sensor and processor (ALL of which are part of the chain of detail / rendering) CANNOT be tweaked.

      If it makes you feel some better, The D7200 mops the floor with the D7100 in high ISO and low light (most of my FAVE stuff!!!!)
      action shooters, indoor sports, etc etc, low light stuff GALORE
      in THAT category, the D7200 blows the CRAP out of the D7100

    Here i have done a full test,and the results are indentical to me!!20% the d7200 is sharper,i have donwloaded this two photos Jpeg from www.imaging-resource.com/ and i have made it black and white to be identical all the material,and then i have boosted +2 the exposure for the both photos:
    drive.google.com/file/d/0B-HfC2HF7LuZVk0yeWY5emRRZ2M/view?usp=sharing
    100% crops
    drive.google.com/file/d/0B-HfC2HF7LuZRFpycVZjMG42VWc/view?usp=sharing
    In this comparison in JPEG there is absolutely no difference and advantage in the dynamic range!I do not have RAW files to make another comparison,but also this is pretty good to see what happens...also d7200 apears to have better color rendition and contrast and sharpness over d7100,and the same dynamic range,but not worse from this test...
