Always and forever thank you to Great Britain, the British people and their creativity for giving the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as Curve and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands?
As a Brit I say thanks Bruno for such a kind comment. @@benedettobruno1669 Glad to chuck some new bands your way. I am sure you are aware that Liz Fraser from the Cocteau Twins sung on an amazing track called Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil. If you do not know the track it shows her vocal brilliance away from the Cocteau's. She also collaborated with Massive Attack. I used to sit up after midnight night after night for years in the 80s and 90s listening to a famous Brit DJ called John Peel who played, basically, everything that the mainstream radio programmes would not. He was a legend among people like me who were into indie, Punk and Reggae music to name a few types. Nowadays I also listen to his son Tom Ravenscroft on BBC Radio 6 from my home in Sicily - ah! the joys of the internet! Clan Of Xymox you say Nick? This video is so good. Toni's glare at the camera, attitude to match her lyrics, the stark black & white, the moody flamenco lady trying to out-face Toni, the band thrashing it out like they mean it in smoky slo-mo, etc etc,... still one of my favourite vids from any band
Saw them on the Doppelganger tour at the Junction in Cambridge, apart from Motorhead, they were the loudest band I've ever heard, my ears were ringing for a week. Also Miss Halliday wore a very tight one piece rubber suit, I honestly thought my family jewels were going to explode she was so hot.
So far ahead of the pack. Curve would find their true place and appreciation among the metal crowd these days. They were seriously heavy and sound as fresh and vital now as they did 30 years ago, unlike most of their peers. A phenomenally talented band with an absolute goddess of cool up front.
Just. Wow. Sounds better than ever, 5/5 to me 30yrs later, doesn't get much better. Incredible impact. The whole image - magnificent too. I think Garbage used Curve as a style blueprint, and cashed in, but the original thing is superior.
I never stopped listening to Curve since their singles came out! My favourites from them are all early releases such as the gloomy "Ten Little Girls" with JC001, the classic shoegazing "Coast Is Clear", the powerful "Clipped" and "Fait Accompli" and the fabulous shining "Horrorhead". I still have Curve videos from MTV Europe's 120 Minutes with Paul King, and everytime I watch them I still feel like it was 1991 or 1992, with all the other bands of the time such as Lush, Slowdive, Ride, etc.
One of my favourite songs of the early 90s The indie scene between the late 80s and mid 90s was fucking brilliant, Best time of my life, No idea how many bands I saw, how many gigs I went to and the amount of quality drugs was awesome, Also, normal, good looking, non pretentious girls, This isn't a rose tinted glasses, nostalgic retro view of things, Being into that scene back then really was cool as f**k.
Light years ahead of the game... love Oasis "Definitely Maybe" but these bad girls/boys were pushing the acoustic envelope two years before. Hard edged blasting bass & reverb, set against a Soft Cell darkness, and a massive sound intelligence. Pure bass, clean vocal, and a frankly perverse heavy edged guitar sound that, fell (FELL) against the vocal mix ... get in!
I agree about the light years, therefore the Oasis comparison doesn't make any sense to me. Oasis were a good-ish trad band, altogether an anachronism, with zero apport in sound innovation department.
First heard Curve on Gary Crowley’s Greater London Radio Saturday afternoon alternative rock show, in the early 90s, when he played the extraordinary track Horror Head! Went and bought the CD single immediately!
Always been a fan, single I heard Ten Little Girls on a mix tape...Got to meet them, all INCREDIBLY nice and charming...and got to play Deb's guitar on the final number, just making noise (Cuckoo Tour) but what I really wanna know...how the hell did Actress Debi Mazar end up in a Curve video?
Years of TH-cam rabbit holes, hundreds of different artists and this is the first time the brilliant Curve popped into my recommended (from within a Cocteau Twins mix). Honestly, it must be 10 years since I've heard this banging tune and was singing along like it was yesterday. Somehow I'd forgotten about the band. Have every CD released by Curve. Even have the solo stuff of Toni's and State of Play and Recoil. Paid $200 U.S. for the Superblaster single. Rare as hen's teeth back then. No... don't tell me they played in Cov... I am genuinely gutted, especially as I never did see them live in their heyday... almost once, supporting The Sisters of Mercy (what a gig that would've been), but on the night it was someone else.
