Magnificent Century Episode 139: • Magnificent Century Ep...
The Magnificent Century takes leave with a breathtaking final episode. Suleiman gets plunged into darkness after Bayezid died and he gets even sicker. Selim tries to releive his pain falling back upon alcohol. Defne fights with all her strength to be able to protect her son. She understands there's no way out while she sees Nurbanu in front of her. The mother and her son walk towards the death holding onto each other. Mihrimah gets Nurbanu in a big trouble flaming with vengeance. Gülfem tries to kill Suleiman considering he is the responsible of everything has happened. However, the night ends with a dark secret. After the agony, Selim comes in the capital as the only heir to the throne. Mihrimah severs all ties with Selim since she sees him as a fratricide. Suleiman loses his strenght day by day and gets furious when he hears what his people talk about him.
And Suleiman the Magnificent goes for his last journey in a blaze of glory. An era ends while Suleiman the Sultan of the world gasps his life out!
At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

Actually both of them had considerably high amount of power, which they effectively shared, but both formally and factually Nurbanu's powers were exceeding Mihrimah's. Nurbanu was haseki sultan, which is higher status than imperial princess and while Mihrimah exercised powers of Valide, she never was Valide sultan herself. During her time Valide was no rank or title but just occupation, Hafsa and in this sense Mihrimah were never "Valide sultans", Ayse Hafsa was mother of padisah and was elevated to status of sultan, however "Valide sultan" in essence was not a thing and she was referred mostly as just sultan(as it was her only title) or effendi(as honorific), while Mihrimah only had duties of Valide in old palace, while Nurbanu resided in Topkapi and was close to every decision that was made, she herself was referred as Valide even when she was haseki as well. She started to build atik Valide mosque, when she was Haseki and in some letters she is referred as "Valide of shehzade", "Future Valide" or straight "Atik Valide" together with her Haseki title, so while Mihrimah was indeed powerful manager of old palace, she only had as much power as Ayse Hafsa sultan, which had not changed even when Valides were called hatuns. Power Valide sultans are famous for was Nurbanu's doing, she made it official governmental rank that was in her case roughly equal to sultan's(that is why she is sometimes considered to be co-ruler rather than just power behind the throne) and generally was right below his. Her decision were not disputed and Murad's opinions did not even matter sometimes, for example when kapudan killiç ali paşa suggested the war against Venice Nurbanu wrote him letter where she threatened him, which scared him so much that he dropped the letter in horror and when Murad asked him what he wanted to talk about he said that it did not matter as Valide was against this. Divan members( even grand Viziers) were dismissed on her direct orders and she was attending Friday prayers in the name of Selim and latter Murad, which was right and duty of padisah and even kosem was not always given the right to do so, while for Nurbanu even it was Natural even as Haseki. She was actually one who was chief advisor of him. Ruling old palace, while would make Mihrimah's already top rank even more prestigious, it would put her nowhere near as influential, one of two "original Hasekis",as Nurbanu. Even Canfeda was made de facto Valide sultan and ruler of Harem for 11 years after Nurbanu's death.
In conclusion, Mihrimah as de facto Valide was more powerful than any other Valide's before her or after Turhan, every regular Hasekis and even Haseki Safiye and Haseki Kosem(who, while less impressive, are still considered as two of four great Hasekis),but was far behind Original Hasekis.

Also, the third triplet Gevherhan could potentially be named after another aunt of Selim's. Historically, Suleyman had at least 10 sisters, Gevherhan Sultan was one of them. She was married off to Saadet Giray before Suleyman's ascension. So, Selim could've named his daughter after her.

In 1573, Marcantonio Barbaro and Bailo Garzoni, wrote contrasting comments regarding of Selim and Murad in order to highlight the differences between father and son.
Soranzo stated: “ Selim is of a rather small stature, though full of flesh. His face is red and rather inflamed, with a substantially fearsome glance. He is 53 years of age and it is common of judgement that he does not have many more years to add to his life. But it is quite different from this description that of Amurat, his son of 26 years old. For one thing, the prince is understood, to be dedicated to the study of the law, to be of modest habits, and appears quite virile as he applies himself to military profession.
Even at this young age he demonstrates a strong resemblance to his grandfather, is respected by all, and, as I have said above is very temperamental, but not lacking in restraint like his father.

Garzoni is not consistent in his portrayal of Murad. In a parallel dispatch, he describes young Murad as a man “of vivacious intellect, enemy of Chr***tians, and follower of his predecessor’s customs.
However, two year previously, the Venetian legate “Ragazzoni” had likewise depicted Murad as a person of “good intellect and good letters, very observant of his religion, and for this reason very much loved by everybody.

It is not officially accepted as we don't have direct source ,but keep in mind nor we have if about Nurbanu or Hurrem as it was against traditions so official records say nothing about it, we only have them mentioned in some of the personal letters , while there is not direct statement about Safiye's marriage, we have one Indication. In October of 1585 her Kira Esther handal informed Venetian balio that two marriage would have been held, one for daughter of Murad sultan Ayse and one for her mother, following month great amount of money was taken from treasury as dowry and Safiye took several letters of congrats. Which mean she might have had the marriage that was neglected by official sources.

One of the inaccuracies I hate most is portrayal of Nurbanu, especially in comparison of Safiye, Mihrimah and Hürrem. None of them possessed the power and prestige of Nurbanu, still she is portrayed miserable.
People only gives credit to hurrem to begin Sultanate of women, but I would say Nurbanu can be considered virtual co-founder as her direct involvement had outreaching effect and was effectively used by her successors, without her Valide Sultan would not have been political rank. Even Ayse Hafsa deserves celebration for putting the base to it,but people only focus on hurrem's doing.

In fact, many historians have stated that the Sultanate of Women started with Nurbanu. As the first slave to hold so much power, to be the most influential at court during her time and to get the title valide. She did not truly have a powerful rival, while Hurrem had to deal with Mahidevran until 1553. Western historians often downplay the influence Mahidevran actually had at court.

Murad looks good here, and the episode shows that he has great potential. Unfortunately, he was ruined by his mother and sisters and also Safiye. The Sultanate of Women was a very bad time in Ottoman history, all these Sultans that could've been great were made into puppets

Interesting to see this brief glimpse of Nurbanu's power just before she became Haseki Sultan and would eventually become Valide Sultan when Murad took the throne. Since most of the time when she was powerful is skipped over. That said, it's so weird to see the harem without Hürrem. It feels oddly empty. I miss her.
