This is a tool assisted speed run of I Wanna Be The Boshy (Version 1.7.1) on Hardon-Mode difficulty with the character sonic. It was played frame by frame with save states using hourglass to complete it as fast as possible, using as many skips and glitches I could to save time. Some frames were lost, but it's only around 5-10 seconds total.
There is one section which is impossible for sonic to complete on hardon-mode, which is the cobrat riding section in mario desert. I've been told its possible to complete on average difficulty using a save through walls glitch, but since this run was on hardon-mode the save which is required does not exist. For this section I change to boshy to complete it then change back to sonic when it is finished.
Boss Room flickers - Caused by hourglass, I haven't found any ways to fix it.
Run Notes (By time)
Tutorial - Deaths here do not increase the death counter.
1:44 - By jumping under the cloud it allows me to skip the Kracko fight along with a section of the world. I tried to see if I could squeeze myself through the clouds below but I couldn't find any frames where sonic would fit.
2:13 - With King Dede you can start giving the input that he asked for on the same frame that he tells you the last command. This saves some time and creates a bug where his speech bubble is blank when he is supposed to say RIGHT!?
5:47 - If you have enough speed you can flip passed the second hole in the spike hole room if you flip on the last pixel possible.
5:53 - When the game is in VVVVVV mode your character goes through walls a very slight amount when changing gravity direction. Using this information I figured out that if you change the gravity and change area at the same frame you can get pushed into walls. With this glitch I get into the wall, then go through the next area change to fall out of the map. This allowed me to fall straight into the boss warp. You may be able to execute this glitch earlier in the room but this was the only spot I was able to make it work.
8:57 - This jump here skips the gradius section of the game, saving quite a bit of time.
12:11 - You can stand on a single pixel to the right of the spikes in the megaman area, this allowed me to jump on these to skip riding both of the green robots.
12:37 - This diagonal spike wall seen on the right side of the screen appears to possibly have a sub-pixel where sonic could stand and survive. I spent a couple hours trying to find a way to stand on it without dieing and was unable to. The closest I got was sonic standing but dieing on the same frame.
13:49 - If you kill two of the fire enemies on the same frame, one of them will disapear instead of splitting up.
13:56 - The boxes are moved in the direction that you have the highest speed at the time that you contact them. The spike at the beginning kills you if you try to push the block up by jumping on the same frame.
14:15 - If you push a block up using a jump you have enough speed to get on-top of the block. When this happens you slowly sink through it, but during this time it will push you through any objects it passes.
15:06 - If you hit this switch and do not die or reload from a save, you can pass the next red block area without hitting the next switch. This allows you to also finish the spike wall without hitting the switch at the end.
17:50 - Sonic jumps high enough that he can simply jump to the top of the tower, skipping the entire thing. It is also possible with boshy if you use save jumps.
18:37 - Sonic's amazing jumps allow him to skip the second phase. I kill solgryn before leaving this phase so that I don't have to do the gradius section.
19:32 - Solgryn is dead the instant he shoots his attack and his death animation is fast enough that the game continues to the ending before the attack reaches you.
Hourglass
To run I Wanna Be The Boshy w/hourglass you need to set the FPS to 50, threading to Allow, and disable your internet. You also need to be on Windows XP.
If you load a save state from a previous area (Areas being Worlds, Boss rooms, and special areas like WoW) the game will crash and you will lose some of your progress in the TAS.
In some cases going back to a save state causes display corruption. If this happens you can usually load the state, let it play until the corruption ends, then load the state again to fix it.

The TAS took around 20 hours, and I went back to save-states 3777 times.
I have a question that may seem slightly related to this: Can computers “learn” to make the perfect speedrun? Like... can a computer take past TASes, “learn” from them, and produce an even better TAS?

There's a few frames between his spinning animation and standing animation where his feet are off the ground and you can simply walk under them or let him move over you.

As far as TAS's go, this one, while it looks impressive, is actually poorly optimized. Could have shaved off a lot of frames by manipulating the RNG on Missingno, both in spawning him and especially his attacks. Also could have shaved frames using the world 4 save skip trick, as well as the Ganon dev button to freeze him in place. Also, if dying isn't an issue for the run, if you had died to Biollante, it would have skipped the tune at the end and save more time. Probably could have made a sub 19 run with those skips. I was impressed by the phase 2 SolGryn skip though, and overall it was a good run. Kudos for doing it and putting it up on the TH-cams for us to enjoy.

The video was not sped up, it's actually slightly slower than normal due to hourglass lag (the tool used to do the run frame by frame with save states). It's just that when you combine frame-perfect input accuracy with sonic's faster than normal running and higher jumps the game can be completed very quickly.

I wanted to have the run be sonic only, but because the snake section is literally impossible for him I had to do one character change to complete the run. But, the current version of hourglass does not support mouse input and it will not allow you to do it yourself when the run is being played back. This makes character changes impossible to tas, along with disabling the use of a saving through walls glitch.
To complete the run I had to do the character changes non-tas, and splice them in.

Btw, at 15:03 you could have just went over the pillars, skipping the entire screen basically. Just saying.
I needed to hit the switch in order to skip all of the switches after it. If you skip the first switch you must get the second switch due to a long column of red blocks blocking your way, and it takes longer to get to the second switch.

I was just curious why xwidghet didn't skip that screen. I did have a feeling there was some detail that saved more time, it is a TAS after all. Every millisecond counts.

None of them hit sonic. When you change characters in boshy your hit box does not change, only your sprite.
Very entertaining TAS, this must have been so much fun to make! How many frames long is it? I've been playing this game blind on stream for about a couple weeks now, and I have to say this might be the hardest and most addicting game I've ever played. IrelandofEndor is the guy who discovered the world 4 skip, and he says he found it by watching me play, because apparently I almost got it by accident in my blind playthrough. Go figure. =P

By delaying the start of the boss battle (When you press S to skip) even one frame the attacks that are used by random bosses change quite a bit. With missingno the best attacks would be to have a recover followed by wrap/splash. I was recently told that if you die after missingno dies the game still continues, so I may re-tas this section to try and defeat it in two-three attacks. I'm not sure if missingno can use the same attack multiple times, but I'll probably test it if I re-tas it.

I'm not 100% sure if this is a joke, but this was done with frame-advance as well which is what made it possible. The enemies move towards you slightly so doing it in real-time with only save states would be rather tedious.

He doesn't do it because TAS, but you can actually kill all those monsters that spawn.
GamerLKP636 with TAS everything that is impossible turns possible, there´s 4 things that you forget about TAS;1:Frame-Advance,2:SlowDowns it allows you to slowdown the game as you prefer,3:SaveStates LoadStates and Re-Records to see what you´re gonna do and re-do it for you don´t make mistakes or fails to make your play PERFECT and 4: you can watch your tool assist speedrun seeing and renderizing it to make a best run than ever! ;)

Does Sonic normally jump higher or is something being done in the tas to make him do that? Also what did you do at 5:54, that was crazy lol.
Sonic jumps quite a bit higher than boshy, and also runs faster. At 5:54 there is a pixel where if you jump (Flip gravity) it will do a screen transition on the same frame while sonic is touching the ceiling without being killed by the spike. When this happens you are pushed into the block on the next screen which allows you to exit the maze at an "undefined" position. This causes the game to do a screen transition without changing your current position, allowing you to fall out of the maze.
E.G. You are entering the previous screen at X:0 Y:25, and instead of doing a screen transition + Teleport to a flipped X/Y coordinate like usual, it only does a screen transition since the position you are entering from is not defined. This leaves you at previous screen at X:0 Y:25, rather than moving the X coordinate to the right side of the screen like usual.
This is my understanding at least, I haven't asked solgryn about it.
