The Wood Elves were the tree looking elves you were interested in. They are fey and capricious, living in Athel Loren forest and hiding away from the world, only to be roused when their woods are trespassed in or threatened by outsiders. They have fey magics and mighty beasts of the forest to fill out their ranks, alongside fast lithe and deadly elven warriors. One of the warhammer fantasy armies that has more female characters and warriors then typical male heavy armies. Like most elven factions in the game and the lore.
There was one time a lost dwarven caravan was murdered by the guardians of athel loren. The dwarf hold upon hearing of this made plans for vengance, they mustered heavily armed and armoured clan warriors, consulted experts on the wood elves and chose the deep winter as the time to make their strike for retribution. By marching into the forest during winter few elves could be roused to fight and this time they were facing dwarf warriors not merchants. The dwarfs took a bloody toll upon the wood elves and cut down some of their oldest trees. Then made a pyre of the sacred wood and bodies to celebrate their grudge against the elves was now settled.

Dwarves in Warhammer are much pettier and more vengeful than in LotR. Grudges are literally a part of their religion, and if you offend one dwarf, you've slighted them all.
There's a story where a noble hired a dwarf to build him a castle. They agreed upon the cost and after a few years the construction was complete. Unknown to the noble, the exact value of his currency had fluctuated in those years, meaning that the original payment promised was off by a few pennies. The dwarf, offended at being cheated, returned home and recorded the slight in THE BOOK OF GRUDGES, a sacred tome of dwarven butthurt.
A few pennies is nothing, but grudges accrue interest just like debt. Exponentially. Sure enough, in a few years the entire dwarven nation descended on the castle and razed it to the ground

I love the monsters that chaos and the beastmen got so I really like there faction. Personally a villain doesn’t always gotta be relatable, sometimes it’s ok to just be evil and a fun villain. I think a perfect example of this is Sigvald the Prince of Slaanesh. He is so one note it's charming. Dude canonically polishes his armor so much that he has a perfect reflection of his face to see at all times. Also lets not forget him wearing a chainmail thong and nothing else under his plate armor. So extreme it goes around the being charming in its own way.

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali ปีที่แล้ว +9

Beastmen are the most tragic faction in Warhammer, IMO. They're often mutants born to non-mutated parents and are abandoned as babies if they aren't killed outright. They turn to chaos worship because chaos accepts them as they are and puts them in a society where their mutations are considered gifts.

    • @oomsou5018
      @oomsou5018 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@nekrataali ehhh kinda. There more tragic as in GW gives them about as much attention as the Eldar in 40k which is barely any and it’s an amazement when they do get any attention. Also chaos doesn’t even accept them. Literally in there lore the chaos gods barely give them any notice unless they are very very exceptional. They are evil down to the bone. Like how it’s literally within a Skaven’s nature to back stab, for beastmen it’s to destroy.

It's understandable that the dwarf high king wasn't too keen on trusting the elves. In the lore, dwarfs and elves had this huge war thousands of years ago which almost wiped out both races. And it all started when the elves cut off a beard of a dwarven emissary, worst insult you could do to them. That's why it's called "war of the beards" by the dwarfs.

The kicker for the conflict, IMO is the fact that it was orchestrated by a rogue faction if elves that will later become known as Dark Elves. The only reason the elven ruler at the time has allowed the war to proceed was his arrogance - he was too prideful to ever tall other races that the elves has just had a civil war and that the rogue faction even exists.

The Dawi (dwarves) and the Elgi (Elves) were at war called the War of the Beard. This saw many casualties on both sides, the dwarves consider it a grudge against the elves and have an inbred animosity towards them. The elves on the other hand would like to forget that war and move on, but the dwarves society is built upon honour, oaths and grudges.
This is a really simplified break down of their relations. GW took the idea from Tolkien Lord of the Rings.

So warhammer fantasy was actually the ORIGINAL IP, warhammer 40k came after. Originally they were said to take place in the same universe, and shared some basic stuff like the warp, the chaos god. But 40k was set in the year 40,000 and sci-fy based. And fantasy was set on a single world. Somewhere along the lines they became two completely separate universes, and eventually 40k would over shoot fantasy in popularity and become the "main" IP.

In addition, the journey of its main character, Yuri, sheds a lot of light on how exactlyin Warhammer universes well meaning people can so often end up as seemingly irredeemable monsters.

Of course their leader will end the song with a burping solo and looks like a helpless fat dobber with awful fashion sense.
However at the same time Ogres are immensely strong, cruel and driven by a supernatural hunger to consume the flesh of others; meanwhile Greasus is the most cunning and ruthless of all the ogre tyrants, on top of being strong and quick despite his weight.

It grows bit by bit, corrupting them until they're consumed by their own rage.

There's the old rumor that Fantasy is a world isolated in the Warp/Eye of Terror and on that world is a crystal ball containing the Milky Way galaxy. I haven't been able to find a definite source since Liber Chaotica Complete is what's often cited (which I don't own a copy of).
Of course, there's also the various items in Fantasy that are from 40k and even had models for (i.e. wizards with boltguns). You could get lightning claws, for example, as magic items gifted from the Old Ones as late as 6th. Edition WHFB (IIRC they were also featured in 7th. and 8th. but my memory is a bit fuzzy). The original Realms of Chaos book and Mordheim both featured 40k gear as random treasures/gifts that were hard to find (1 in 666 chance in Realms of Chaos).

0:14 - Total War: Warhammer I through III are all set in Warhammer Fantasy. Warhammer Fantasy experienced the End Times and became Age of Sigmar.
Dawn of War, Darktide, Space Marine, Inquisitor, etc, are all set in Warhammer 40,000/WH40K.
Fantasy and 40K are completely different settings except for some of the concepts and names. Like Slaanesh, the Prince of Pleasure/She Who Thirsts, is in both settings but his/her origin is very different in each and personality is somewhat different.

So Elsa is the Tsarina of Kislev, the Warhammer fantasy version of all eastern europe mashed together. They defend the world against constant demon invasions. And for the relatable villain thing, I get what you mean. Chaos corrupts, and there is little reason to ever side with them or ability to relate with them at all realistically. The big bad guy seen throughout the trailer with horns is Archaon, he's the chosen of all 4 chaos gods, so evil they all agreed he was the best fit.
Oh, and at 4:16, thats a dark elf named Malekith, he has a very special relationship with his mother. very... close.

10:20 the worshippers of khorne, usually get corrupted when they feel rage, hate, anger and frustration to an extreme.
This is exemplified in one of the main Warhammer 3 trailers you probably watched. The other Yuri got corrupted, because he hated both religions of his nation, since chaos was slowly, but surely winning, and he felt that they were all greedy, and didn't actually care for the people.
So he gave in to his rage, feeling why should I defend them, if i can't beat chaos I'll join them.
After corruption takes in, Khorne makes it so that you can't feel anything but rage, so you must always kill, maim, burn, and take skulls.

Warhammer has 2 popular settings: space scifi in 40k, and a more standard fantasy setting which the total war: warhammer games as set in. The warhammer fantasy world is limited to one planet which has the continents and cultures that resemble our own. The human Empire (leader is Karl Franz, the main guy speaking in the trailer) has a German vibe to it. There's a French inspired one to their west, who are barely seen in the video. There's Kislev to the northeast of the Empire, who are very Russian inspired with ice and bear and orthodox religion. In warhammer 3, Cathay was add far in the east and is clearly China. Whilst a lot of things are different in the fantasy setting/warhammer 3 compared to 40k, chaos is still the same in terms of influence and chaos gods. In the fantasy world, instead of poles to the north and south, that world bleeds into chaos wastes so the supernatural threats are very real.
"These people", referred to at 6:51, are wood elves. Unlike high elves and dark elves, they don't have a big part of the world that's theirs, they just stick to great forests and are very much against chaos. The little gecko dude with a blowpipe that's shown with the wood elves belongs to another faction (lizardmen) but also very anti-chaos so it makes sense that he's there.
The dwarf with the big axe (the best dwarf, don't argue on this one) is Grombrindal and is kind of a dwarf demi god. In the game he's a fantastic lord who strengthens some fun units, but in the lore he's a mysterious figure who lived long ago and shows up when his people need him. He sounds a lot like a dwarf version of santa, shows up and punishes people on the naughty list, eats all the food and drink left out for him, then leaves.
There was a small bit after the "credits" in the first video that teased the next faction coming, I didn't expect the video to play all the way to the end. The great thing about immortal empires is that the map is huge and contains almost the whole world and has 86 (I think) different playable choices, so the trailer was more about showing all of that together than telling a story.

I'm playing Total War Warhammer 3 off and on right now, and it's a lot of fun. Games Workshop kind of blew up the old Warhammer fantasy world and rebooted it a few years back, but there were some really great series there. Gotrek and Felix was an ongoing series with a big following. It's about a dwarf with a death wish, and a poet that chronicles his stories have different adventures. I really liked the Nagash series, which is about how one of the series biggest villains came about and destroyed an Egyptian-style empire, and also how necromancy and undead creatures came into Warhammer.
Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 both have the concept of Chaos as a malevolent demonic force in the world. And so, there are concepts and characters that overlap between the two, like the four gods of Chaos and their greater demons. For more information, consult your local Liber Daemonica.

The short was meant like that. Tho this one elve in particular is very wise, all high elves still remain inherently arrogant. So even tho he knows it at all isn’t smart to say something like that he can’t keep himself from making these clever verbal jabs.
The dwarf started by questioning if he even speaks for his people since he isn’t the main leader of their faction. The reason their leader(s) aren’t attending this meeting is because their homeland is already getting invaded by dark elves, which you can also see in the video. Same goes for kislev and cathay, since they are at the front line versus chaos. (You can also see this happening in the video.) But this is more known by the people attending the meeting.
Also later in the video you see a legendary dwarf and one of the main leaders of the high elves fight side by side and looking grateful at each other to be fighting by one’s side.
The storytelling in this is video is truly too much to go over everything and as you could probably already tell it’s beautifully done. Just know you’re looking at a masterpiece. One of the last to remain that haven’t been ruined by the wider public and has a lot of passionate players and fanatics.

    So, the two settings:
Warhammer Fantasy is a fantasy world set on a single planet roughly inspired by Earth, filled with all of your common (and a few original) fantasy races. The "main" protagonist faction is the Empire, a nation of scrappy humans inspired by the real world Holy Roman Empire (the one that's now Germany and was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire) with roughly renaissance era technology (guns are only just becoming popular). The most original antagonist are the Four Gods of Chaos and all the varied corruption they bring.
At some point people from the same company decided that it would be cool to have their ip IN SPACE. What started as a very simple conversion to scifi became the Warhammer 40k universe, where the grim and gritty elements of the fantasy setting were turned up to eleven. The holy empire became an insane fascist/theocratic space empire of all humans with a corpse god-emperor at its head. Many fantasy races became aliens that were all extreme in one way or another. A couple of extra aliens were added. And the Space Marines, initially a parody of ubermensch jackboot cops, became the unironic focus of most storytellers. The forces of Chaos remain the same, except with more guns and space ships, to the point that there's fan theories that the four gods are literally the same across both settings and that you can travel from one to the other through their realm..

Hannah, the villains in 40k or Warhammer aren't just blood and guts. That's just the front facing narrative or the ideals of the peons lost to madness at least. The character villains are almost always complex and compelling and sometimes when reading the books you forget you're following a "bad guy" due to their actions and ideals being so compelling. Especially the ones who see their brothers fall to madness but they refuse to lose sight of a goal.
The Nightlords trilogy is one of the best for this in 40k. There's also the Fabius Bile trilogy too. And lastly the Black Legion series which is yet to be finished following Abaddon the Despoiler shows many endearing characteristics of some of the galaxies most notorious baddies.

Hey Hannah, great vid and if you want to see more good action synched to the music, check out the Vampire Coast trailer for Total Warhammer 2, along with the Ogre Kingdoms trailer, that's the best music trailers of the games.
Also about the people you wanna know more about, those are wood elves (wutelgi in dwarvish), which are also one of my favourite races in the game. Theres 2 trailers for them (Wood Elves trailer of course and The Twisted and The Twilight trailer). They are very isolationist, they usually stay in their forests and if you come to them - well, they kill you for stepping on their lawn. In the game they are one of the strongest defensive factions in their magic forests and pretty much the definition of elite soldiers (even their trashiest units pretty much never flee for me, which is usually a huge issue with the low tier units you get at the start of a campaign). They excel at laying ambushes, fighting in forests and have the best archers and some of the best cavalry in the entire game.

Alright, so let's see if I can try and explain this.
Total War is a saga of games that are based on being a commander of an army. These have taken A LOT of historical time periods, some of the most popular ones being Total War: Shogun, Napoleonic Wars, Rome and Medieval.
Meanwhile Warhammer is a fantasy setting war game (as in, a tabletop game and not a videogame) in a world were magic and things of the like exist freely. Then came Warhammer 40k which seeked to be the same style of game but on a space themed setting, but with time it begun to grow into it's own thing.
So the company that makes the Total War games and that which owns the rights of Warhammer decided to unite both concepts into what we have here Total War: Warhammer (Or Total Warhammer which is much easier to say.)

On the point about struggling to connect with Warhammer villains, the Chaos Gods are interesting in that despite the end results being pretty terrible they offer freedom from something unpleasant about the life of their worshipers.
Khorne the God of Blood, War, Honor, etc. has Valkia the Bloody as their most favored follower. She was born into a patriarchal society which wasn't going to respect her claim to ruler ship as the chiefs daughter, nor her desire to be a warrior rather than stay at home. She took offense to that and strove to become the best warrior she could be. Khorne, who cares only about results saw her talent and rewarded her. Despite literally being blessed by their god the men in her tribe never really appreciated her as a warrior, just keeping their disapproval to themselves since she could best them all in combat (except for Kormak who wasn't a sexist asshat but would still very much lose to Valkia in single combat).
Eventually when she was struck down (on a religious quest) Khorne revived her in a form more pleasing to him, by which I mean she got fangs, claws, and wings to better engage in combat. She was appointed the duty of anointing the worthy with Khorne's blessing and set out to do her Gods work since again, Khorne just cares about results. Kormak incidentally was the first to receive a blessing, being her platonic murder buddy for literally years by this point.
Chaos worship is still a monkeys paw but it attracts people who initially had understandable desires which then are twisted into something hideous. Unfortunately there is no backing out from worshiping the chaos gods so many of their champions start out tragic and then decide if they are in for a penny, they're in for a pound.

  • @SampoPaalanen

The thing about mortal followers of Chaos (the "bad guys" in Warhammer be it WH40k or Warhammer fantasy (which the total war games are based) is that they don't start as "pure evil" but they start of with understandable motivations (maybe not good ones but at least ones you can understand) and over time those motivations get corrupted until there's nothing left of the original motivation and the power of the Dark Gods is both the means and the end.
For example a warrior might start wanting to protect their family and loved ones, but over time the Dark Gods drive them to more and more extreme methods with person justifying it to themselves that it's for the ones they are trying to protect, until at some point they fall for good and after that point all that matters is "Blood for the Blood God, Skulls for the Skull throne!" and there's no turning back.

I still remember the line that convinced me to make Ogre Kingdoms my Fantasy army back in the day. "An ogre loves his club, and will only eat it in the direst of circumstances."

  • @jesussantos7380
    @jesussantos7380 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding villains who just like hurting people, tbh that's more legitimate than what actually occurs in the real world. A lot of Warhammer is based on history. For example, the Dark Elves resemble Marquis De Sade and the French nobility during the 1700s. It was not an uncommon practice among the elites of society to kidnap people of all ages, torture them, assault them, and many other horrors for no other reason than because they enjoyed it (this is where we get the word Sadism).
Another example is the Mongols who the Orcs were based on, who would take people's bodies - living or dead - and mount them on catapults, light them on fire, and throw them back at their enemies (this is where we get the Doomdiver goblins). Or the Vampire Counts who were based on the Ottoman/Eastern European counts like Vlad the Impaler, infamous for having dinner with thousands of people mounted on pikes going through their rear and out their mouths.
When you look at the biographies of these people, they all had everyday lives where they lived with their family, went to church and donated to it, served their country in war, and were genuinely good people to their friends and family. They just had a switch in their brain that said "these OTHER people are here to make me feel good, and I just happen to like cutting them apart."

When you talk about having trouble to understand the other side, especially with chaos it is about slow corruption, like how it is hinted at here with the sons of Kislev, to save his people one Brother decides to take up that (in my opinion quite obvious) nono-sword) to save his people. I agree with you comparison to lord of the rings, quite similar as with boromir who also wanted to use the ring for the good of his people but the power is corrupting, same as with the brother in this trailer and that sword he slowly turns more bloodthirsty and evil and in the end loses sight of the very reason he picked up the nono sword, I believe those or similar stories lie behind most of the evil (chaos) characters in warhammer (just that many of those stories are not allways directly shown), as the saying goes: The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

cain is a good series, i'm sure you've already been recommended it but gaunt's ghosts is another good one for a... rational human perspective in the 40k setting, and it's even fairly optimistic at points

High King Thorgrim is too harsh on Teclis(Elven Mage/Loremaster of Hoeth) who is literally the only person on that war counsel with experience in such a crisis as he was once an advisor to Emperor Magnus the Pious during the last great chaos invasion and literally taught Men how to channel the winds of magic, founding the Imperial College of Magic in Altdorf(Current seat of the Emperor Karl Franz).
I'd say the difference between the Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40000 is that Warhammer fantasy is much more linear leading to ultimate goal and enemy (and of course there are good guys trying to do the right thing) and easy to understand than warhammer 40k where there is no distinction between good and evil just evils and lesser evils; ends justify the means.
To get to know the various factions I'd recommend you watch/ react to the faction trailers for the other previous total war warhammer games.

so something on the villain portrayals, in a lot of the stories for warhammer you have to keep in mind that the narrator or view is always biased especially when it comes to 40k. unfortunately you only really find the other side of these factions and characters when you read the codex/army book for that faction, your still gonna get one dimensional stuff like daemons, skaven, tyranids, and orks but you can find some interesting stories on how the other factions interact when it isnt a view from the Imperial or human point of view.
Also idk if you would like it but its one of my favorite warhammer fantasy series is the Gotrek & Felix novels, to summarize its about a dwarf slayer seeking a worthy doom and his human companion Felix who has pledged to witness it and record his doom in a epic poem.
    Love your videos!

So Total War is a strategy game series that tends to take on different themes for each game. Originally these were historical, samurai, knight, napoleon etc. But lately most have been this trilogy of Warhammer games.
Warhammer Fantasy and 40K started both as you know as tabletop games. Fantasy heavily relies on pulp fantasy of the 80s and 40K takes an equally silly grimdark look at sci-fi. While never officially connected for decades a popular fan theory was Fantasy was essentially a isolated planet in 40K with primitive technology. But it seems Games Workshop is actively moving away from that in newer writing. But the share races like the fungal orcs, gods like chaos and have a lot of mirrors in factions.
Eldar are high elves, Drukari are Dark Elves, Empire of Man is… you know. Still they’re not copies. But that’s in short how this all fits together. The makers of Total War license the Warhammer Fantasy setting for a trilogy of games. Essentially each game with expansions give you 1/3 of the main factions. Together you can play all, the first trailer celebrates that event.
