    Aloha David.
    Oh yes , bees like to nail as where we sweat and watch bands are that place.
    Hardly use a veil anymore, so bare arms as well. veil is nearby 'if' needed but mostly gathers dust of non-use.
    We only used Deep supers in our bee yards and the busiest 2 yards, I only kept a single brood box and a single honey box. These hives filled their honey box completely every 2 weeks with 60 pounds of honey, all year long. I tested whether or not it would be trouble to have 9 or even 8 drawn frames in these honey supers... no trouble at all. Just carefully spaced frames from 10 down to 9 and then from 9 down to 8. Same output of honey each harvest.

    thanks for sharing. I fed my hive over winter with Hive Alive fondant and they came thru very strong. I had a similar experience as you. I split my hive 35 days ago and the split is thriving. One week after the split the original hive swarmed again. However, within an hour all the bess returned. I put 3 frames of bees into the split hive to reduce crowding. Now, I am anxiously waiting to see if the original hive has a laying queen. I plan to inspect tomorrow to see if there are signs of a laying queen. Hoping for the best.

    GREAT VIDEO DAVID 👍. This past Tuesday (May 17) I added a second deep with drawn comb to a hive that had filled up the base deep in 10 days. Plenty of pollen and nectar this spring season. Bending with the knees is the secret!

      That is so true. The video evidence of my hives during the winter, consuming and growing with the Winter Bee Kinds, and then seeing the rapid spring build up. The queen's genetics have a lot to do with it too. I'm raising more queens using these queens as breeder queens.

    This has to be one of the best videos I’ve seen of yours lately. Everything is always informative but the flow of the music and video and the amount of information was just so well put together. Also I love that you recorded adding in the cameras in the frame to see what it typically looks like as a keeper who records different angles. You have a pretty nice set up. I have two canons I put into retirement once the phones became very close quality to my outdated camera however at least they won’t overheat. I just need a good microphone. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for the effort you put into the editing and making of quality videos.

    Hi David. I think you should put a peppermint candy in the corners on top of the frames to get rid of the hive beetles. It works here in Indiana so I think it will work for you to.
    Thanks for your video's.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am not convinced at all that this will work. Also the colony communicates via pheromones and I'm not sure the negative reaction or interference this could have on pheromones. I'll dive into the scientific studies and see the results.

    Similar thing happened to me this week. Found a swarm from a previously split hive while mowing and caught them in a nuc box. Next day they left the nuc before I could move it and appear to have gone back to the original hive. Population booming and I can only assume it was due to your winter bee kind I used over winter. Might need to do like you and split again.

    i think that "can you use too much smoke" on the bees comes from all the misinformation out there about that topic by "professional beekeepers" on the internet and their yt channels. Just google that and then you will see what they say. IDK how much smoke it takes to drive all the bees out of a beehive into the grass, including the queen, or how much smoke it takes to make the bees consume all of their honey and abscond ... but I have never hit that level and I generally use a lot of smoke lol

  • @brook7880

    This may be a dumb question, but do you have to buy a colonies for every hive or just a queen for each hive in that location?

    I am new to beekeeping and my hive just made it threw thier first winter with 2 deeps. I really want to split them so I can have 2 hives this year and have watched loads of videos on how to but not sure when is a good time. I just oppened them up a few weeks ago and was surprised to see a lot of dead Mites and not as many bees as I hoped(almost none in the bottom deep). I treated for the Mites and the bees are starting to increase in number now but not sure how many bees is enough to split or what are some signals that it's a good time to do it.

    I showed my son a swarm 2 weeks ago from our hive. I told him it’s not something you get to witness everyday. I’ve seen the one swarm in my life at 58. He’s up to 3 swarms in the last 2 weeks at 29. Go figure. My hive keeps swarming even though I’ve split it 3 times. The smoker lesson using burlap and extending the legs on the bottom plate inside the smoker is working for me.

    Thank you David for all of your videos! They've been so helpful. I have a question that I would appreciate it if you are able to answer. I am a brand new beekeeper and started two hives about 3 weeks ago using two nucs I bought from a local apiary. I've inspected the hives a couple of times so far. They both seem to be progressing well in terms of brood, eggs and drawing out empty frames. Today, I noticed a capped queen cup at the bottom of one of the frames that I think it's a swarm cell. There are still about 2 frames in an 8 frame box that are pretty open. It also has an upper brood box that is largely empty. I don't understand the presence of this queen cell that seems like a swarm cell. Also what should I do about this situation? Make a split, crush it or ignore it? Thanks in advance!

    I'm a pretty new beekeeper and hardly smoke at all, mostly just to move bees away from areas to not squish them. I see you use your smoker often but I wouldn't call it "a lot". I was told in the beginning to smoke straight into the front enterance before starting into a hive. I think David's "a lot" is probably just normal.

    DAVE HELP! I just went outside and it was like the locust plaque! My bees swarmed. They are in a tree near by and the original hive is still good, but there are what looks like several Queen cells. There is honey and brood as well. Should I just leave it or should I split it again? I also plan to capture the swarm. I have an extra box. Should put it on the original hive for extra room? Also will that swarm enter a nuke if I place it near? Sorry for all the questions!

    Are you talkin about a CB radio? NYC thank you David

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No sir. Very different from CB. CB radios can only transmit up to 4 watts by law. With GMRS the FCC allows up to 50 watts of power. CB frequencies are affected by solar and other interference but GMRS is UHF. CB requires a longer length antenna but GRMS is shorter. GMRS is wide band FM Modulation and has privacy codes and use repeaters if you want to talk around the country. Not affected by solar cycles. Licenses is only $35 for the whole family and radios are inexpensive. I bought two for $70.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the handhelds, I use the Midland GXT, they are 5 watts on some channels. Remember you can listen without a license, but before you talk, you need to get your GMRS call sign from the FCC. All done online, $35, takes about 24 hours.
