The cars were built with two different philosophies of use. The Charger is built to be a sporty badass that tries to keep up in a high speed pursuit. The P71 is like Jason from Friday The 13th. No matter how fast and hard you run, it will eventually catch up with you. Well, at least it's radio, the helicopter and all of it's friends that it summons will. :)

You can't compare the vic to the charger when it comes to racing them, but if you were to do a reliability test between them, the vic would take the lead by far.

That heavy Vic is by no means a sports car it by no means has the biggest V8 but for what the Crown Vic is it can hold its own. Law enforcement used Vics for years for a reason.

I had an 86 with a 96 front end swap. It was like driving a newer truck but with old features like no power anything haha. Mine was a step-side, good looking truck.
The odometer was broke at 180K when I bought it so I know at least that haha, the engine was a 302. It had a manual 3 speed in it, made it fun to drive.

Mason Criner You sound like a loud mouth child and I ain't a kid man I'm 20 years old and I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L Windsor V8 with 203,601 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since. Call me a Redneck or a HillBilly but my truck will outlast anything you see on the road today and plus my truck looks better than anything you see on the road today as well.

JT P The Srt8 Charger has enough power to break traction down shifting into 1st gear. It makes 425hp @ 4,100lbs. The Crown Vic doesnt have enough power to lose traction downshifting into 1st it only makes 250hp at 3,900lbs. Unless theres lots of sand, gravel, shit, or water on the road.(wet pavement)

I've never raced anything higher than an RT and I've never raced another police edition but I have beaten every 5.7 that I've raced in all of them was stocked I even raced one that was modified with cold air intake and he couldn't beat me and I raced him 3 times
Maybe they raced them because, you know, they're both police cars? The CV didn't lose cause it was outdated it lost because it was not even built to be an opponent to an SRT8.

Ok. Former Ford tech and current Dodge tech here.. the only similarities between these two cars is Rwd, 4 doors, and a v8. Similarities begin to end there. The p71 does have a trans cooler and dual radiators and a basic "interceptor" tune along with a decent traklock rear end (which is why it hopped off the line faster) along with extra ground clearance. So the p71 is definitely a car to handle major abuse and then be easily fixed. It is not, however, a fast car. The Charger is far more powerful if it is running the 6.1 or larger so it had better win but when you break it the repairs are not as easy and you can't abuse it nearly as much. Both of these cars are cake, they're just different kinds of cake. And sometimes the cake is a lie.
BigOxx Auto No... 6.1 is 175 more crank horse than the 4.6. its not uncommon to see first gen srt8s going high 12s low 13s bone stock... P71s on a GOOD day with proper gearing and bolt ons MIGHT see low 15s. Its bus lengths difference. Even Marauders with FBO's don't hang with stock srt8s.....
True. But with some tweaking, especially on an e85 model, they can boogy. Mine with no turbo and no spray will run 13.15 on a good day. J-Mod helps a lot too, less shift lag. Not saying they are great, just underrated is all, lolz. But then again, gearing makes a difference as well.
I don't think a Crown Vic would even beat a Charger R/T. I own a '06 300C with the 5.7L hemi. My car is stock and I was able to pull on a G35 coupe from start to finish. I will be doing some work to it soon, such as CAI, Catback exhaust, maybe some headers, and a tune. I want to make it just as quick as the SRT8, if not quicker.
The Crown Victoria police interceptor will hold up better. The Hemi is faster but it does not have a full steel frame like the p71 interceptors. Start hitting shit and you will see which one will fold up. Drive them both foot to the floor from Florida to West Virginia. That dodge will burn up. State patrols have packages installed if they are running the dodge. The P71 is just built more solid even in civilian form. Also swap out the 4.6 for the 2014 5.0 coyote V8. then see what it do

Thats why they went with the Hemi Charger, Ford Crown Vic was ok in the day, but today theres alot of fast cars on the road and also with a higher M.P.H. top end, something the crown Victorian could keep up with the newer competition.
Interesting video to say the least. I think it would’ve been a better comparison to use a Charger with a 5.7. Most Chargers that are used as Patrol Units have the 5.7 in them, but there probably are some out there with the SRT8 engines in them. Most likely an agency with a little more capital to work with for equipment. Years ago the Dooley County, Ga, was running unmarked Impala SS units on the road, obviously more costly than the 9C1 Caprices. So right there is a Agency that isn’t shy about stepping up the class of Patrol Cars they use. It would be cool to have the SRT8 go up against a 32 valve 4.6 Marauder, but I’ve never know a P71 Crown Vic to be equipped with one of those engines. Good Day Everyone!

There really is no doubt that the 425hp car is going to whip the ~250hp (if that!) car that also weighs more than the Charger does. The only race the P71 wins is the race to 200,000 miles (and beyond!). I'm pretty sure my wife's minivan will hang with my P71, at least up to highway speed.

Charger is for speed. Crown vic for durability and being easy and cheap to repair. Also Crown vics are very easy to modify with different engine and drivelines as well as turbo and S/C kits
No doubt the charger has more power but I'd still argue a 100k cop car especially one with lots of hours is near the top of worn out maintenance items. The coil packs, oxygen sensors, maf, a worn out fuel pump from 1000s hours, transmission definitely worn out on a patrol car. The gear ratios are different that's why the charger was slow to start I believe its a 2.80 vs the 3.27/3.55 in a vic

Crown Vic is basically like a truck (it's a body bolted to a frame) - which is heavy and not very sporty. But it's solid and rigid as hell (and a hell more reliable than SRT8). It's silly to compare the 2.
You know that periodically all police service vehicles are replaced for a reason. Remember the Chevrolet Caprice? 5.o Fox bodied Mustangs? They were phased out because newer and improved cars and costs of operation has to be justified.
As a dealer I've had a bunch of Chargers the past couple years. LOTS of Vics and Marquis, too. The Charger is faster...the Vics are the better cars in every other way. Most amusing, though, I collect 90's B and D bodies. Older cops still pine for those LT1-powered Caprice squads... And the 22 year old LT1 will mostly whip the Hemi Chargers AND, like the Vics, it's a helluva lot better built car. You're not going to see any of these Chargers doing ten and 15 years service with a couple hundred k miles on them like rural departments often did with the Chevy's and Fords. Hell, we've still got a couple Caprices in rotation locally...I guarantee you won't see that with these Chargers.

This is not a good match or comparison in the slightest. While the weight and purpose of these two might be very similar, the power is not even close. The crown Victoria was the first platform for the modular v8 released in 1991. The crown Victoria was a long run, dependable, comfortable, well engineered machine. The 4.6 2 valve even with a good tune, head work, and mild cams will at best make 350 hp without forced induction or obviously nitrous. This car has none of those. This car might make 280hp and that's on a good day with cold dense air. The charger in stock form makes 425hp out of the 6.1 that it has. Let's also mention the charger utilizes a 5 speed auto while the crown vic only has 4. The crown Victoria holds it own like it always has and always will. A better comparison would be a same year charger with a 3.5 v6. Try again.
The Charger is faster (both are fast) but the speed difference is without meaning in practical police enforcement terms. In EVERY other measure of a police vehicle, the CV is better (including actually holding arrestees!) I have noticed that the younger officers like the Charger, I think, to satisfy adolescent longings more than hard-nosed police work.
Yes, the charger is faster. However, that DOES NOT make it better suited for police duty. The police during a pursuit normally just have to "keep up" and wait for the offender to make a mistake. Since the person bei g chased likely doesnt care about the car their in, that pursuit may go over numerous curbs, through fields, rutted dirt roads, and god knows what else. The vic can handle that type of stuff better then any passenger car (and most suvs /pickups) built in the last 30 years. Not to mention, the crown vic isnt exactly a slouch by anymeans, and handles very well considering what it is.

When you're in a high speed chase they are not usually driving bumper to bumper. Rather in visual range with enough room to react and reliability to maintain the chase. Crown vic's (body on full frame) have been staying into service 200,000 to 300,00 miles after being discontinued. If chargers (uni-body) were such a viable also option this would not be happening.

Do you know that no good Ford guy ever leaves his vehicle stock so here's a few tips if anyone's interested from a certified Ford mechanic install 410 gears in the rear and make sure there is a good transmission cooler installed make sure you have installed or have planned to install the same let me repeat that the same parts that you can install on the mustang 4.6 L on your crown Vic 4.6 L that includes stainless steel Shorty headers some type of hush power Flowmaster muffler you do not want loud exhaust you want to slight rumble but no loud exhaust a quality intake manifold upgrade intake elbow and cold air kit change out the camp followers to the ones sold by American muscle they're better and lighter change the cams you want to use a Ford racing style cam or cam sets then you want a good quality SCT tuner and have it custom tune to buy Bama performance make sure you upgrade your breaks a good slotted set of brake rotors and ceramic high temperature pads then put some NItto Invo tires on it. Now enjoy your Dodge stomping Crown Victoria with the smaller displacement 4.6L 281ci.... if your engine is not savable find a 2005 to 2009 or preferably the 2010 model Mustang GT and swap the three valve an automatic transmission and the engine and trans wiring harness is into the Crown Vic and hang on
The Charger may be faster but it will never be as good like a crown victoria. The Crown Victoria is the best American car ever made. When the Charger hits 600.000 miles and still going then you can talk.
Charger is faster now but while the charger is at the dealership or second hand shop what not getting a motor swap the Vic will be going still....Vic is one of the most if not the most reliable vehicles in history

The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since. Call me a Redneck or a HillBilly but my truck will outlast anything you see on the road today and plus my truck looks better than anything you see on the road today as well.

JT P The Srt8 Charger has enough power to break traction down shifting into 1st gear. It makes 425hp @ 4,100lbs. The Crown Vic doesnt have enough power to lose traction downshifting into 1st it only makes 250hp at 3,900lbs. Unless theres lots of sand, gravel, shit, or water on the road.(wet pavement)

I've never raced anything higher than an RT and I've never raced another police edition but I have beaten every 5.7 that I've raced in all of them was stocked I even raced one that was modified with cold air intake and he couldn't beat me and I raced him 3 times

Ok. Former Ford tech and current Dodge tech here.. the only similarities between these two cars is Rwd, 4 doors, and a v8. Similarities begin to end there. The p71 does have a trans cooler and dual radiators and a basic "interceptor" tune along with a decent traklock rear end (which is why it hopped off the line faster) along with extra ground clearance. So the p71 is definitely a car to handle major abuse and then be easily fixed. It is not, however, a fast car. The Charger is far more powerful if it is running the 6.1 or larger so it had better win but when you break it the repairs are not as easy and you can't abuse it nearly as much. Both of these cars are cake, they're just different kinds of cake. And sometimes the cake is a lie.

BigOxx Auto No... 6.1 is 175 more crank horse than the 4.6. its not uncommon to see first gen srt8s going high 12s low 13s bone stock... P71s on a GOOD day with proper gearing and bolt ons MIGHT see low 15s. Its bus lengths difference. Even Marauders with FBO's don't hang with stock srt8s.....
True. But with some tweaking, especially on an e85 model, they can boogy. Mine with no turbo and no spray will run 13.15 on a good day. J-Mod helps a lot too, less shift lag. Not saying they are great, just underrated is all, lolz. But then again, gearing makes a difference as well.

I don't think a Crown Vic would even beat a Charger R/T. I own a '06 300C with the 5.7L hemi. My car is stock and I was able to pull on a G35 coupe from start to finish. I will be doing some work to it soon, such as CAI, Catback exhaust, maybe some headers, and a tune. I want to make it just as quick as the SRT8, if not quicker.
The Crown Victoria police interceptor will hold up better.
The Hemi is faster but it does not have a full steel frame like the p71 interceptors. Start hitting shit and you will see which one will fold up.
Drive them both foot to the floor from Florida to West Virginia. That dodge will burn up. State patrols have packages installed if they are running the dodge. The P71 is just built more solid even in civilian form. Also swap out the 4.6 for the 2014 5.0 coyote V8. then see what it do

Interesting video to say the least. I think it would’ve been a better comparison to use a Charger with a 5.7. Most Chargers that are used as Patrol Units have the 5.7 in them, but there probably are some out there with the SRT8 engines in them. Most likely an agency with a little more capital to work with for equipment. Years ago the Dooley County, Ga, was running unmarked Impala SS units on the road, obviously more costly than the 9C1 Caprices. So right there is a Agency that isn’t shy about stepping up the class of Patrol Cars they use. It would be cool to have the SRT8 go up against a 32 valve 4.6 Marauder, but I’ve never know a P71 Crown Vic to be equipped with one of those engines. Good Day Everyone!

There really is no doubt that the 425hp car is going to whip the ~250hp (if that!) car that also weighs more than the Charger does. The only race the P71 wins is the race to 200,000 miles (and beyond!). I'm pretty sure my wife's minivan will hang with my P71, at least up to highway speed.

No doubt the charger has more power but I'd still argue a 100k cop car especially one with lots of hours is near the top of worn out maintenance items. The coil packs, oxygen sensors, maf, a worn out fuel pump from 1000s hours, transmission definitely worn out on a patrol car. The gear ratios are different that's why the charger was slow to start I believe its a 2.80 vs the 3.27/3.55 in a vic

Yeah, a pretty senseless race but I'd like to see a crown Vic with the 03 390hp cobra engine and a C4 auto now that would be a good race! This is what I'm doing to 2010 Vic with a intercooler and supercharger 750hp at the rear wheels, drop it about 4-6 inches, chop the top and I'll run with anything out there.

Crown Vic is basically like a truck (it's a body bolted to a frame) - which is heavy and not very sporty. But it's solid and rigid as hell (and a hell more reliable than SRT8). It's silly to compare the 2.
You know that periodically all police service vehicles are replaced for a reason. Remember the Chevrolet Caprice? 5.o Fox bodied Mustangs? They were phased out because newer and improved cars and costs of operation has to be justified.

As a dealer I've had a bunch of Chargers the past couple years. LOTS of Vics and Marquis, too. The Charger is faster...the Vics are the better cars in every other way. Most amusing, though, I collect 90's B and D bodies. Older cops still pine for those LT1-powered Caprice squads... And the 22 year old LT1 will mostly whip the Hemi Chargers AND, like the Vics, it's a helluva lot better built car. You're not going to see any of these Chargers doing ten and 15 years service with a couple hundred k miles on them like rural departments often did with the Chevy's and Fords. Hell, we've still got a couple Caprices in rotation locally...I guarantee you won't see that with these Chargers.

This is not a good match or comparison in the slightest. While the weight and purpose of these two might be very similar, the power is not even close. The crown Victoria was the first platform for the modular v8 released in 1991. The crown Victoria was a long run, dependable, comfortable, well engineered machine. The 4.6 2 valve even with a good tune, head work, and mild cams will at best make 350 hp without forced induction or obviously nitrous. This car has none of those. This car might make 280hp and that's on a good day with cold dense air. The charger in stock form makes 425hp out of the 6.1 that it has. Let's also mention the charger utilizes a 5 speed auto while the crown vic only has 4. The crown Victoria holds it own like it always has and always will. A better comparison would be a same year charger with a 3.5 v6. Try again.

In EVERY other measure of a police vehicle, the CV is better (including actually holding arrestees!) I have noticed that the younger officers like the Charger, I think, to satisfy adolescent longings more than hard-nosed police work.

Yes, the charger is faster. However, that DOES NOT make it better suited for police duty. The police during a pursuit normally just have to "keep up" and wait for the offender to make a mistake. Since the person bei g chased likely doesnt care about the car their in, that pursuit may go over numerous curbs, through fields, rutted dirt roads, and god knows what else. The vic can handle that type of stuff better then any passenger car (and most suvs /pickups) built in the last 30 years. Not to mention, the crown vic isnt exactly a slouch by anymeans, and handles very well considering what it is.

When you're in a high speed chase they are not usually driving bumper to bumper. Rather in visual range with enough room to react and reliability to maintain the chase. Crown vic's (body on full frame) have been staying into service 200,000 to 300,00 miles after being discontinued. If chargers (uni-body) were such a viable also option this would not be happening.

Do you know that no good Ford guy ever leaves his vehicle stock so here's a few tips if anyone's interested from a certified Ford mechanic install 410 gears in the rear and make sure there is a good transmission cooler installed make sure you have installed or have planned to install the same let me repeat that the same parts that you can install on the mustang 4.6 L on your crown Vic 4.6 L that includes stainless steel Shorty headers some type of hush power Flowmaster muffler you do not want loud exhaust you want to slight rumble but no loud exhaust a quality intake manifold upgrade intake elbow and cold air kit change out the camp followers to the ones sold by American muscle they're better and lighter change the cams you want to use a Ford racing style cam or cam sets then you want a good quality SCT tuner and have it custom tune to buy Bama performance make sure you upgrade your breaks a good slotted set of brake rotors and ceramic high temperature pads then put some NItto Invo tires on it. Now enjoy your Dodge stomping Crown Victoria with the smaller displacement 4.6L 281ci.... if your engine is not savable find a 2005 to 2009 or preferably the 2010 model Mustang GT and swap the three valve an automatic transmission and the engine and trans wiring harness is into the Crown Vic and hang on
