Thank you so much. Believe me, 11 years later, your video is exactly what I needed to find the courage to clean my carburator like a pro! (well, it felt like that anyways). Our old lawn mower (that we cannot tell the brand anymore it is so old) starts like a charm.

This is probably the single best TH-cam video for cleaning out a lawnmower carburetor. Very clear and easy to follow. I have used this video to clean the carburetor on my lawnmower which wouldn't start. This cleaning process has worked like a dream. The lawnmower now starts after one pull and seems eager to run. While I was at it, I replaced the fuel line which was perished and the carburetor fuel bowl which had a broken drain valve. Great stuff. Thanks very much for this video.

Thank you!! Because of this video I was able to get my craftsman 4.5 Hp Eager 1 Lawnmower working in under 2 hours. I was pulling and pulling and nothin'. Left gas in all winter and there was no oil left in the engine. Went to C.T. and picked up some motomaster 4 stroke lawn mower oil, a new spark plug and a new air filter. 20 bucks later and with the help of your tutorial and a 3 yr old can of carb cleaner the mower started on 1 pull! Never did that all last season. You're awesome

Thanks for taking the time to make this. Even 3 yrs later the video convinced me to do the work myself, saved $50-60. Awesome. Only improvements to this tutorial seems to be the cleaning of the jet holes with wire and also to show how you set the needle back onto the bowl clip piece. Also seems you can take just the bowl off and do *most of the steps.

Boy, the lawnmower fix it shops must hate these You Tube videos. Big loss of business.
    Seriously though, do the following:
Store fuel no longer than 30'days, and put a five dollar fuel filter on your machine. Done!
Nice video, thanks for helping people!

@binnsh Thanks for the support of the videos, and as for removing the fuel for winterization, I go through this war every fall with my father who swears by emptying it out of all his equipment. To each his own but I believe it causes the gaskets and o-rings to dry up and deteriorate hence why i always leave just a bit of fuel and some stabilizer in mine over the winter months. I always end up rebuilding a carb or two in the spring for my father lol

Just for your future reference this is a Tecumseh engine. Craftsman is the name Sears had written on nearly all their equipment for years. Also, I noticed when you took the carburetor bowl off the carburetor that the bowl was turned 180 degrees from where it should have been. If you notice the bowl has a shallow spot on the bottom and a deeper spot. The shallow spot needs to be directly under the hinge pin which fastens the float to the carburetor body. This leaves the deeper part of the bowl for the float to drop down and let fuel into the bowl. I do not know if your sprayed carburetor cleaner into the fuel inlet in the carburetor body where the needle seat was or not because you sprayed it off camera. Just a quick tip here, you should NEVER spray carburetor cleaner on ANY rubber parts on your carburetor because the chemicals in carburetor cleaner will distort the shape of the rubber parts. It will actually cause the rubber parts to swell and cause you to have problems with your needle and seat functioning correctly. Please believe me when I say I am not trying to be a know-it-all. These are things I learned through trial and error myself and I am only trying to share with you what I have learned. I wish you only best, sir, and "Happy Wrenching!"

I've had good luck just pulling the float cover and spraying the innerds in place, assuming you have access. It's often a bit of goo or varnish in the bottom of the bowl or on the main jet from sitting. My snow blower has a nice little button on the bottom of the cover to get the last little bit of gas out before storage to prevent this problem. You put together nice videos.

Gasoline will turn to varnish over the winter when the mower is not in use and gunk up the carburetor so the mower wont't start. You don't want that to happen so just run the gas out of it before storing it for the winter. Or just start it up periodically.

does it smoke? try checking your spark plug, sometimes you can get another season out of one just by spinning it around on a bench grinder with a wire wheel, or even a little wire brush if its sooted up bad....
Just remember to always check your spark plug gap any time your reinstalling a plug. Heck that might even be the problem!

@Big10or11 If that is the case, most small engine shops, and outdoor equipment or powersport equipment shops stock a large inventory of carb rebuild kits for most popular brands of mower engines. They are pretty cheap and dont let the title scare you it will usually just be a small ziplock bag with 2 or 3 o-rings, a needle, a bowl gasket, and possibly a new jet. the one i bought for this mower was 14 bucks

@croom9 Thanks for the reply. My 4.5hp push craftsman, doesn't have a choke or throttle adj. like yours on this vid. It is a mulching mower and newer, green color. I may have put the linkages incorrectly(I may have put the spring on the top of that thing on side of engine which I assume is connected to the governor). I see you hooked them before you screwed on the carb. It will rev when I advance the linkage(buttterfly valve?)..
