Just a suggestion. Maybe add a floor trap door to better access the storage space over the stair area. something to stand on. The door could be hinged.
I have watched all of your home repairs and am so happy to see a new series of “fixes”. I had already watched episode 2 and didn’t realize it until I went back to look at part of the stairwell remodel. Sooooo, episode 3 is next. When you did the bedroom, living room and etc I binge watched for hours and was so happy it was on a fast mode. Thank you for being smart, creative and quite the craftsman! Love your videos! BTW I’m, the 73 year old lady who loves you and what you do!❤❤❤
Oh good, another mini series, I love these. It's surprising how much material was in that small space and how many layers. You're gaining so much more space and storage. It's going to look so good. What, you're not keeping the wallpaper? Ha ha ha!
This space is going to look amazing once done. Just having new drywall, paint and a light will make it so bright and new. Excited to see how it all comes together!
Enjoy this. Your house reminds me if mine. My cape cod was built in 1959 and wish I have the skills to remodel it lol. I've never touched a power tool up until I bought a house in 2021😅 and all o sudden I am a gardenner, landscaper, handy man, a plumber and a wanna be electrician..
Gotta save that wood paneling for the 70s-style basement with shag carpets, neon signs, and a tacky glass top coffee table with recreational paraphernalia (purely for decoration purposes only, of course).
I would've totally saved that print and added it into the new shelving, behind a door or something just to keep the memory alive 🤣 I love funky stuff like that 🤣
I so hope your camera person is wearing a mask, too! LOL. Awesome work again. Thank you for making these videos, and I look forward to the next in the series.
That red flower pattern on the old wall looks original to the 1940s. If it's not too late for the suggestion, maybe save one square's worth of the design, just to put in a frame in the hall to remember where the house started from. I'm a sucker for old elements that survive the years, in general, however garish to godawful they may objectively be. Like, you've found some pretty awesome 60s vinyl patterns in the floors, even if they're not something most people would want to keep anymore & the materials themselves are unusable. Keeping a small reminder of the past can also just be a mood booster to be proud of not having to deal with the unsalvageable old crud in the present.
Hate doing demo! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stabbed or scraped by nails, while doing demo. Can’t wait to see what you do with the expanded closet space. Love the bloopers!
Everything you show in your videos are things that should have been done in my house. hahah That old wood is so much denser than the stuff today. The difference is unbelievable.
It would have been nice to save a large square of that neat retro wall-paper and frame it to use as a keepsake!🤗 Nice demo to make more room for shelving!👍
I can't wait to see what you do in part 2. The area where the dead space was is going to be really difficult to get to with out something creative. As someone who is tall I really like how you cut away the area above the stairs to give more head room.
I like the little giant ladder. It’s great in stair areas. Another build I’m watching, they attached some boards along the stairwell and put some 1 1/8 subfloor on it so the sub flooring could move in the stairwell nice little temporary platform to work on
That’s a good area of space reclaimed and the whole area will be first class when you’ve finished it. These mini series are excellent, and I was also able to recommend you to someone who needs to replace their rotten window sills. She was delighted. So glad I found you all that time ago. 👏👏👏
Demo videos like this really makes me wish we could see a build video by the people who last renovated it. "Today we're going to cover over this old and outdated wallpaper with some stylish and contemporary wood paneling!"
Thankyou SO MUCH for posting all your Great videos!! They're just what I've been "surfing" UTUBE for!! They're all Stuffed full of great info!!! I'm now a Follower and a Subscriber!! Our house is just as or older than yours! Can ya talk about,or do a video about removing 2 load bearing walls that connect at one corner! I'm STUMPED!!
You might want to look into that stair handrail, it looks like it doesn’t go all the way up the stairs, you could maybe relocate to the opposite side so it comes up all the way to the top of the stairs. You could also replace it with something modern to go with the new look you are going to be going with.
Haha, coincidence since i found your channel very recently, and am finishing the stairwell storage in my new home as well (newly built so a clean start). However houses are built a lot different in the Netherlands ;) Love your channel! Even though the houses are a lot different to me still very amusing to watch.
Layer upon layer upon layer......! Isn't it amazing when you start tearing out old walls what a ton of useless crap you find? 😊 old remodels just added another layer. Well done! 👏👏👏👏👏
I keep a 39 gallon plastic trash can so that I can put all of the trim and BS in it so that it doesn't clutter up the floor and I don't accidentally step on it. Had 2 nails go through my foot when I was a wee lad and it hurt like the dickens.
Great job it is going to look fantastic, Also quick question what is your thought on chimneys. I personally like exposed brick not as a functional chimney
Hey, was that space another room initially? That old studs were added during a previous renovation I guess, since the walls behind have the same wallpaper.
And you thought you were a Fixer. Seems to me that with each renovation, you are an archeologist! You never know what you will find behind wall #1 or wall #2. Okay, ready for Part 2. Thanks for sharing. And in case you don't post before next Thursday....Happy Thanksgiving. 🍗🦃
Any chance you could address how and how much it costs to have materials tested for asbestos? In remodels u always hear "have it tested" but nobody ever addresses where, and how much, and how to go about it, most don't have funding to send stuff in for testing. Anyways love ur videos, I've learned a lot!

@@TheFixerHomeRepair you’re seriously my new favorite person to watch, the detail in your work is incredible. I’m currently binge watching every video 🙏🏼
What if you closed off that whole area and made the basement access only from the outside. Then you wouldn’t need the stairs and could probably make it the laundry room etc. That would also fix all your stuff under the stairs because there wouldn’t be stairs.
Hey, good question! There were a few different reasons for doing it that way but the main reason was to have the bedroom wall straight and to have that extra space for storage. 😃 Thanks for asking!

Wow. You've done/doing such a fantastic job with your renovations. You will soon have a new home. Way to go! 😊😊

Just love watching all that 70s wood paneling go bye-bye.
Maybe you can put some dormers into your attic next.
That wallpaper is quite festive looking!

Having lived in Asia for many years, one thing I’d like to see is recycling of material, particularly the wood studs.

Agreed! The whole project has tons of parts to it.

Looking good Matt! No house has enough storage, I need a garage so I can clean out my basement.
I love watching you tear stuff out. Then rebuild it better.🎉

Twins are doing great and are going to be 8 months this week! 😃
Good job!! I love your builds.
Thank you so much!
Dang! As much wood and stuff you took out, it seems you should have gained a foot in wall space. That was a lot of stuff for one itty bitty space.😮
It's amazing why builders don't utilize all space to the fullest.
This is an old house. Looking at my house they didn't believe in closets. 😵
It was. On the other side of the wall there was a recessed shelf. But when he did that room he moved the wall making that space empty
Yep! 😃
We all just have too much stuff. A lot of material came out of that small space.
Hey, was that space another room initially? That old studs were added during a previous renovation I guess, since the walls behind have the same wallpaper.

Not a terrible idea but we go up and down the stairs several times a day. Would get really annoying having to go outside to get there.
What is the building code in your county? I ask because some counties require a steel exterior door to be installed if the basement is unfriended.
How much time do you use pondering your next move?
After I figure out how to answer this question, I'll let you know. 😂 Thanks for watching the video!
Please wear safety googles for the next part!
the last of the wood panelling... until more shows up somehow like an SCP.
Just dont fall down the stairs when reaching for something on the top shelves above the stairs. 🙂
Is basement remodel a future project ?
It's definitely still on the list, just not on the top of it. I have a ton of projects going on right now! 😃
