  • I show a working progress how to build a homemade brick blacksmiths forge. It turned out to work well to heat steel and other metals up, I was able to blacksmith a or forge a small scroll (first attempt) to test the forge. Constructed from bricks and I show you how you can make your own, using a blower for the air supply to help fire the coal powered forge which were actually can you use briquettes. Quick easy and cheap to make your own forge for blacksmithing and perhaps make a few items or handles for other woodworking projects. woodwork woodworking woodturning woodturner shop woodshop workshop anvil diy

    A kid actually making a blacksmith Forge instead of begging his mum to buy one store bought, or sitting inside plating video games and getting 300 pounds.. Good job young man, you should do well in life, ignore the ignorant negative comments.. If you can find a short section of train track somewhere you'll have a nice little anvil..

    You need an enclosed top on the forge to keep the heat in and also get the temperature of your furnace higher than it is with the open top. In open-top furnaces, there's a SHIT TON of heat escaping rapidly, as heat rises. With a closed-top, you retain and harness much more heat, which takes less time to heat up your metals and allows you to heat metals with higher melting points. Also, as you probably learned in this experiment, never use brick or stone as an anvil. Even the most solid cinderblock doesn't make a good anvil. The heat from the red-hot metal makes the stone/brick/block much weaker and can sometimes crack the stone with nothing more than the heat. Brick already breaks super easily and shouldn't be used to hammer on.

    • @jasperedinger7502

      i started with a stone and that worked well i just needed a heavy one that wouldnt crack or crumble

    • @pocketrug1103
      @pocketrug1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's difficult if you don't have a metal top for it as brick and cement erode rapidly under the intense heat produced by the forge

    I know this is an old vid but its not bad for beginners. If coal or charcoal is hard to get in your area you may look at a gas forge. Keep on forging.

    • @OrionsAnvil
      @OrionsAnvil 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @louiseleu this is definitely a good idea. If I were to use wood exclusively I would buy or make something like the Whitlox "V" shaped forge though. That seems like a very efficient solid fuel forge concept. I would also probably invest the time in making charcoal. My gas forge comment from 5 years ago was just a suggestion for people that may not be aware of other options. Forge by any means necessary 😉👍

    You can drive an axe in a log and use the backside as an anvil. Large pieces of steel are hard to come by. A large sledge hammer in a vise works well.
    Well done guys.

  • @apatientspider
    @apatientspider 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You might find some small pieces of railway track and other usefull items at a steelyard which sells scrap. Also, a recycle center which takes in junk might have something you can use. One easy idea for a small anvil is a 16 to 20 pound sledge hammer head - mount it vertically in a piece of log or timber with the striking face up. The ancients as well as some primitives used a piece of hard stone for an anvil - something such as granite.

    Nice forge. The main thing people need to realize is it's not hard to get iron and steel hot enough to work for low strength applications. If you want hardened steel for tool and knife edges though, you need to go all out and get that steel to a bright yellow heat rather than red. This followed by proper quenching and tempering is what produces the desirable characteristics for good knife/sword/tool steel. If you're just making decorative hardware, hooks, nails, latches and things, then this sort of set up will work just fine.

  • @TheXdzX

    Very nice. I modified an old wood stove to serve my purposes lol. An old piece of railroad track would make a nice anvil, You can find it laying along the side of the tracks after they do work most of the time. Just be sure to ask your local railway dept if you could get a bit of it. I use a piece of 8- 10 in by 8 or 10 in square steel tubing I picked up at a scrap yard myself. Rings like hell though your neighbors might not like it very much lol Best of luck with the smithing ^_^

    I agree with BigKame09, I was heating a galvanized pipe aka washing line pole hacked up lol, I was using it as a melting pot in my pressure stove forge/furnace I built and the inner of the pipe started glowing a green and yellow colour and had quite a peculiar smell. So i would be careful when heating/melting metals not just because of burns because of toxins to.

    Find a train yard, one that has left over pieces of rail. And ask if you can have a piece of rail. A short piece of trainrail makes a good anvil and the ones here in the states are rounded on the edges so it works good, and the piece was free here. And you can mount the train rail upside down and it is flat. They sometimes have short pieces of rail 12"-24" inches or half a meter. And dont forget the metal scrap yards, they have lots of things you could use for blacksmithing.

    be carefull with how long you cover the air inlet on the dust colector. the air flow keeps the internal bearings cool. the motor has its own fan & should be fine.
