Made this forge today. I didn't have an electrical connection so used a foot pump and it worked pretty well :-) not sure how well its going to hold up to repeated use but was a great one day project and a very cheap way to try Blacksmithing for the first time. Thanks for the video :-)

I'm pretty excited for this new electrical forge, I've been thinking about making one for a while but strayed away from it because I don't know the first thing about electricity. I'm hoping you actually manage to get that up next week and don't disappear on us ;)

Just one point: I found out that the mix of plaster and sand doesnt hold up to higher temperatures. I use coke for my forging projects and the refractory would just melt/burn or fall off at this temperatures. Iam using a mixture of 50% silica sand 30% cat litter (bentonite) and 20% portland cement. the portland cement is just for the strength at low temperatures and will loose strength at higher temperatures. If I fire the forge/foundry for the first time Iam using the full power of my blower and feed in a lot of coke. The sand will melt and the refractory gets very strong. Works better than the plaster and sand mixture but still got its issues...after some time you need to change the refractory.
A brakedrum forge works better for me. But for charcoal its just fine

Great video. I would recommend getting a drill step bit for drilling into metal, especially useful for bigger holes. I got a cheap one off of ebay and it's brilliant.
Nah, man, I took my forging hammer and a big ass nail I found a year prior at my old home depot job. I just banged it on and ripped an ugly, but effective, hole into it

Hey I found this video just in time! considering building my own forge soon after using my school's metal shop forge.
Also a project idea: make a serrated knife/saw sort of thing. I'm curious to see how you'd do serration. Personally I'd just use a grinder then heat treat it.
When I put serrations on a knife I use a round and triangle file from my experience that works better than a grinder even though it takes longer

Awesome forge ! But if you had an air blower on both sides there would be much more options. Of course you would need and extension cord with two plugs and a second blower. Good stuff dude!

@@Un_known861 it does not really matter, I just did a hair dryer and and a coffe can and attached it to the tube. (The coffe can was an adapter). I have since upgraded to a propane forge in order to make larger knives. This is a good forge

For the air supply do you think having it at the bottom and then drilling air vents thru the plaster an pan would help distribute the heat better so you don't have to move the coal around? Thinking of doing this build for mine but don't know if the air in the middle would be better

Nice job simple design is always the best.... I saw a similar idea on you tube where the guy took a piece of pipe and slit it with a thin grinding disk. He drilled a hole in the side like you and then lined the tin with the same mix and the shoved the pipe through the hole with the slit pointing and embedded it in the mix same idea just gave a bigger area for heating larger items..
By the way loving the H&S you've gone to all the trouble of leather apron and welder gloves buy bare legs and short ouch ouch ouch. not a criticism just made me laugh . keep up the good work!

d.i.y anvils look for train track or train track plates. or buy a sledge hammer and mount it to use 1 side
Hey, I'm really interested in getting into making my own knifes but I live in the UK. I was wondering what kind of laws/restrictions you have to abide by ( if there is any ). thanks anyway, and nice video.
I live in the UK too, and I am pretty sure you can make/or own most types of knives so long as you keep them at home and on private property, and don't take them into public places. But I am not 100% sure so check Wikipedia or something.

This is a great build but what you might find is that it will be more time and money efficient to build a gas forge in my area coal is expensive and it runs out quick for big projects i know youve made a small soup can gas forge but for anyone else watching i recommend gas in the long term

hi, i have a question: i am making a karambit but i dont know if the steel is heat-treated already. its very hard to file so i also need something to do the sanding does anyone knows some tips and trick for the sanding? i have a few tools and the angle grinder does the work fast but its very hard to handle.
Great video but I would use mouldable Firebrick (5Kg Tub is £15 inc delivery) instead of plaster of paris/sand as it could withstand greater temperatures and it is heat refractive up to 1440 degrees
Also you can get some cheap brand new 11kg anvils on ebay only £35

Nice work fella - we thing though - wouldn't the refractive material be more durable if smoothed out, perhaps by using a smaller roasting tray. If it was smoother it would be less liable to fracture.

I've heard this doesn't have a long burn life. How much work can you get done before it crumbles? Also, how much charcoal you going through an hour?
I don't use that to line mine. but know what it made up of . Not that long but it depend on the heat level. It will melt the sand and burn up the plasters with high heat. If you go with just barley forging heat it should last some time. As long as it stay dry .
For charcoal . It about air flow. The more air the more heat. the fast you burn it up. Banquettes last a long but may have a heat limit and a lot of ash. Lump varies on this. It all about the size of it with the rate of air flow.
I got a disk break forge around 5 cup in size . The fuel is quarter/ nut size. Have to fill it up about every 25 minutes with none stop low air flow just around forging heat. Blasting it is less than 10 minutes. See white flame pop out and steel become a sparkler and the clay lining melts

The fumes aren't bad if your outside or have a good ventilation system (fan) haha.

How much water did you use? Did you just eye ball it or was there a ratio?
The ratio is a 1:1 ratio of plaster of Paris to regular sand, and from there keep pouring water until it is a consistency of plaster mix and there you go

Hey I was wondering if it was able to melt aluminum or even lead?
Lead has a low melting point so I'm pretty sure it will melt it. I don't know aluminums melting point but I think it is higher than this forge can heat up to
You can melt lead on a camp fire in a cast iron pot if you wanted. I wouldn't recommend it though. You can melt aluminium in this forge IF you have a good crucible and IF you are very careful. BUT it wouldn't be as safe or effective as getting a designated melting furnace .
I would not recommend doing any of this for safety reasons.

Thats great! However, at high temperatures the plaster decomposes and will require some repairs, but yes, for these purposes. its fine :)

+Tele Chubbies ideally commercial refractory, but a lot of recipes at home use fireclay/sand, not ideal, but the fireclay is better than plaster

Timeler Plays it will melt aluminum, brass and lead I'd think. if you inclose it in fire brick or a steel shell it will get hotter. more air flow will make it extreamly hot
I built this forge but the bottom cracked . what did I do wrong?
You used a galvanised tray? The zink fumes will make your bottom crack
