Thanks, that's exactly what I'm shooting for. I've been fascinated by blacksmithing for most of my life, but always thought it was too hard to get into. Little did I know I could have been forging all along!
I saw a guy doing traditional metal work at a living history thing several years ago... the guy had at least fifty different hammers, I asked where he bought them. He said he made them, he said best way to learn is starting by making some of the tools you need and if you need a different size or shape hammer later on, make it..... I asked what he used as his first hammer, he said his neighbor8s ball peen hammer......
Thanks! I learned almost everything I know about forging from TH-cam so it's natural to want to repay the community however I can. It's amazing how helpful and talented these DIY TH-camrs are. Great community to be a part of.
Hey man I watched your first "start forging now" video from a while back and it inspired me to start forging. I have a better setup now but thank you for helping me get started and keep making great content.
I think the number one improvement I could suggest to anyone watching this is to secure the anvil on an even wooden surface, a log or a stump or a big block of wood. That will all you to transfer more of the hammers energy to the metal as you strike it
Thank you for this!! I've been thinking about buying an expensive forge for a while and now i know it's half way easey to do with a normal fire with added air.
Look into forges made from old truck brake drums, and car wheels. Works great, I know a couple of professional knife makers that use a brake drum forge, and an anvil made from a piece of rail road track.
I did some forging this afternoon for the first time. It didn't work out very well because I didn't find an anvil or some other piece of metal, but it was a lot of fun doing it and I am defenitly going to do it more and search for better stuff. Your video helped a lot, thanks!
Forging is fun. I make many tools I need rather than order it and wait for it, or trying to find something suitable. Made a tool today I needed to drive round spring clips.
Thanks very much, this is very helpful, it is very easy to get too focused on equipment and not get to use it. You could also put some stakes into the ground to stop the anvil from moving around when you are shaping the metal, it should make it much easier.
By the way, the 16th century started on the year 1501 Incase you didn’t know. And yes, I’m aware they forged many years before as well; although the 16th century is when I believe blades truly began to become works of art.
You can start forging in less than thirty minutes in YOUR backyard assuming you don’t live in any regular neighborhood and have rebar just lying around plus you’ll need a fire ring and wood too use as well. JK, this helped a lot thanks for the tips and tricks to start forging!!!! :) ;)
Great vid! I've decided to get into the kraft as a hobby n maybe make a few extra bucks eventually. This video is the 1st one ov its kind to be added to my Smithing n Forging folder. Thanku.
Excellent! I wish somebody would’ve told me about this sooner-I spent about 30 years, from early childhood, being fascinated by blacksmithing. I just never thought I could do it myself. Thank God for TH-cam. LOL.
I wanted to start forging when forge in fire show came on first 3 season is good for me. I wanted to make knifes from rail road spikes laying around in the stones where I took the spikes from not from the rails. Then go on with lawn mower blades.
I made a forge out of a barrel style grille. I put a hand blower attached to the side blowing under a charcoal bed. No matter how much I crank the blower I can't get the heat I want. Any suggestions? Or should I just get a hair dryer?
Sir Mister I’ve often wondered about those handcranked blowers, it looks so cool when you see a blacksmith using one… Unfortunately I have no expertise in that area. It might have to do with the design of the Forge, in any case I’m guessing a blow dryer would do the trick… Just doesn’t look quite as cool. LOL.
I'm thinking I might try this on a weekend soon, but I'm wondering if there is an alternative to the hair dryer, as I don think i have a long enough extension cord to power it. Really helpful and informative videos though!
Great video! You earned my sub :). I got some questions: what kind of bricks did you use? Normal bricks would explode right? What kind of metal/ steel should i start with as a beginner? Im thinking about trying some rebar like you did here. Are blowtorches good instead of a fire? Thank you in advance :)
Northern Sailor The only propane forge I have any experience with is one I built last winter. That one uses a Venturi style burner, basically just a pipe with a propane nozzle at one end and a few other modifications. It works, but I might need a second burner to get it hot enough for things like Forge welding. What you described sounds interesting though. Let me know if you learn more about it. I’m always interested in the design aspect of this hobby. Especially DIY stuff.
Can you use a cordless leaf blower? I have a good dewalt. But I was going to use my old Ryobi? I can vary the speed with a dc to dc converter. I'm thinking cheap? It's just sitting there never used. Lol dewalt is my baby. Btw . I'm more motivated!!! Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
Blud man, sorry, must’ve been an imposter. The weird thing is I started this channel before I heard about the Fargo TV show on FX... I’m guessing there are a few screen names out there based off of that show. Mine happens to be entirely coincidental… Although if I had known about it, it would have been a good way to get publicity back in 2012. Lol.
Hi FargoFX can you make a home make fishing hook Also I have started forging with the hammer in the beginning and the hammer near the end and a hairdryer in my back yard after watching your first how to srart forgoing and I forge on a elevator wait
Funny. I also use an 80lb elevator weight. Before using it as an anvil I attached a vice to it so I could easily ground/hold oddly shaped pieces for welding. Only disadvantage is that it has no round edges. Hope to fix that with the next large brushfire I've got to get rid of.....
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt, I’m not saying that’s a “bad” idea, but I would be concerned about the skulls coming apart in the middle of a project. Have you considered petrified dinosaur heads? Probably more durable.
Good eye. It's a very similar to my Backyard Forge video from last year. This is even simpler because it uses an existing fire ring and a very simple smithing project, but the overall theme is the same: "Get Started Now"
Me and my dad my grampa and my great grampa have a forge it's nothing pro like it's more like beginner shop we made a nori nori a butter knife 🔪 and we begining on a little knife for me ok
Mate! Love how you made it so.... everyday...for anyone... to just start.
Thanks, that's exactly what I'm shooting for. I've been fascinated by blacksmithing for most of my life, but always thought it was too hard to get into. Little did I know I could have been forging all along!

Great as always man I think it’s important to make these videos so beginners can start out well I know they helped me a lot :)

my dad helped me build a scaled up soup can forge for less the 100 dollars and it works great
Awesome. I actually attempted a soup can forge about a year and a half ago... didn't go so well, but I've learned a lot since then.
Best beginning forging channel
Im gonna start building my backyard forge tonight! I so excited!
Thank you for this!! I've been thinking about buying an expensive forge for a while and now i know it's half way easey to do with a normal fire with added air.

THANK YOU for keeping it real!
I have never forged before and I thank you for this knowledge.
Gonna start forging lock picks
Gotta get into that display case somehow

You have a stellar attitude man. Good info. Subbed.
Forging is fun. I make many tools I need rather than order it and wait for it, or trying to find something suitable. Made a tool today I needed to drive round spring clips.
Thanks for this i was about to spend 2000+ on forging but we had everything we needed already
Zastanawiam się czy nie spróbować że stalą. Fajny filmik. Dziękuję.

I always say “People did this in the 16th century, so why is it that you can’t?”
By the way, the 16th century started on the year 1501 Incase you didn’t know. And yes, I’m aware they forged many years before as well; although the 16th century is when I believe blades truly began to become works of art.
Indeed! Much as the third millenium began in 2001 (but don't tell anybody, everybody thinks it was 2000, we don't want to confuse them)
Exactly. And there weren't too many propane forges and electric blowers in 16th century. 😉
forging iron as early as 1200bc. That's 6,000 years earlier. they had to figure it out without youtube too! LOL
Well mabye they don't have arms.
You can start forging in less than thirty minutes in YOUR backyard assuming you don’t live in any regular neighborhood and have rebar just lying around plus you’ll need a fire ring and wood too use as well.

Good spirit.
Great video! very inspirational
King Omri much thanks, my friend. 👍
Great vid! I've decided to get into the kraft as a hobby n maybe make a few extra bucks eventually. This video is the 1st one ov its kind to be added to my Smithing n Forging folder. Thanku.
Awesome. Much thanks!
So did you make a extra few bucks or did you quit 3 years ago? 🤣
good very good, continue
Periklis Phoenix Will do! 👍
I Shop-Vac in blower mode works great for air flow.
Hey that’s what I’ve always done, I’ve heat treated a knife with one too
Excellent! I wish somebody would’ve told me about this sooner-I spent about 30 years, from early childhood, being fascinated by blacksmithing. I just never thought I could do it myself. Thank God for TH-cam. LOL.
I am going to start sending people to this video, it seems many people think they "can't just start smithing".
That was very inspiring and I’m thinking about doing a forge in my garage my background is jewelry making so I have the basic knowledge great video
It is not recommended to start a forge in a garage because if red hot metal falls on the floor, concrete can explode with the heat
This is what i need!
Nice job!
Thanks!
I wanted to start forging when forge in fire show came on first 3 season is good for me. I wanted to make knifes from rail road spikes laying around in the stones where I took the spikes from not from the rails. Then go on with lawn mower blades.
First? Idk. I got my anvil, hammer, files, and tongs I’m starting forging soon
Awesome! Keep us posted on your progress.
Good for you

Good
just asking should i build more tools like hammers and tongs, decrotive items like leaves or knives since im getting a WHISPER LOWBOY FORGE next week
Nice! Forge what you love to forge (or if you have the discipline, forge what you find most challenging)
My dad is a welder do you think the steel he uses will work?
it really depends just make sure its not galvanized and its better not to use stainless
I'm thinking I might try this on a weekend soon, but I'm wondering if there is an alternative to the hair dryer, as I don think i have a long enough extension cord to power it. Really helpful and informative videos though!
i know this is late and you probably figured something out but bellows work good
Great video! You earned my sub :). I got some questions: what kind of bricks did you use? Normal bricks would explode right? What kind of metal/ steel should i start with as a beginner? Im thinking about trying some rebar like you did here.
Are blowtorches good instead of a fire? Thank you in advance :)
Dry clay bricks are good for starting with. Cinder blocks tend to crack and wet stones WILL explode. However a normal clay brick will work fine
you could buy firebricks which are specially made
@@muunii6801 thanks :D a bit funny that You answered for a 2 year old comment xD
Or you can dig a small tunnel
Do you know anything about using a propane tank connected to a chamber that spins with air or something?
Northern Sailor The only propane forge I have any experience with is one I built last winter. That one uses a Venturi style burner, basically just a pipe with a propane nozzle at one end and a few other modifications. Can I use a leaf blower
"Safety flops!" 🤣
I started with a Stanley blast fan
Matthew Hall That’s a good idea, plenty of air movement through one of those. I bet you got some really good heat out of that Forge.
Will a bike pump work?
I want to get into forging and tried using only wood but couldnt get my metal hot enough to get the job done any tips?
More oxygen I'd reckon.
Hi, just wondering but do u play Arma because I saw someone with your TH-cam name on arma 3.
Blud man, sorry, must’ve been an imposter. The weird thing is I started this channel before I heard about the Fargo TV show on FX... Home made fishing hook would be an awesome challenge. I honestly hadn't thought of that one. I'll def look into it.

Lol I need too think bout preventing fire.guess where I am . Yep Australia
Start your country on fire
How do I run a wired hair dryer outside, away from my house's electricity?
Kinda sucks being in NC, it rains so much...
Get 4 1.5-2 meter stick's and a tarp and make a shelter job done or build a largerr fire so long as it isn't hammering it down should be all good
Ikr? I just do it in my Carport.
Shoulda forged the point! :-)
Shhh 😂
Good video I am BlackSteel but in a different account
great video I think this is going to be one of your more popular videos
Thanks!
iv wanted to get in to forging but i don't have a yard
Can you you a air compressor
Safety fllopppsss
👍
Thanks!
I'm 11 and a want to blacksmith should i
as long as you practice the correct safety procedures you should go for it, its a fun hobby
@Joshua Huff Thank you u r awesome
A bit of fire .a bit of wind .a bit of Metal .that's all you need
I'm using a 20kg barbell plate, as a anvil
I use the heads of my enemies as anvils.
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt Was oof
@@FargoFX BRUH XD
Question, does a creek count as an anti fire measure 😂
:~: (tears lots of tears) ):
Dont forget safety first, you only get 1 pair of hands and one pair of eyes, dont fuck them up before you master
This seems familiar 🤔

Reupload?
Good catch! Although not quite. This is actually an entirely different project, but very similar theme. 👍
FargoFX oh ok
i live in an apartment...
if i could i would make knifes out of rebar ans sell em cheap, a bito coin
What about a heat gun?
I've tried a heat gun. It doesn't move a lot of air, so it's hard to get a properly hot fire.
@@stevenscott2136 ah sweet thank you for the reply kinda wierd in a way you think it would since it reaches 2500 degrees lol but thank you 😊
If you want a good fire once it's burning well put some coal on it
Jesus loves you
Me and my dad my grampa and my great grampa have a forge it's nothing pro like it's more like beginner shop we made a nori nori a butter knife 🔪 and we begining on a little knife for me ok
