    All of this! I've been a dog walker and pet sitter for 6+ years now
    I *try* to slow down on the weekends but let's face it all summer long I could book for sitting and people actually get mad at you when your not available and just want to take a mini vacation yourself
    No sick days! Yes so true I just literally had someone say to my face "well if your sick and I have you booked for sitting your still going to come right?"

    I used to do this. I didn't take the dogs to parks. I would just drive to each house, get the dog and go for walks in the neighborhood they lived in. I didn't need to drive to a park or put the dogs in my car. I guess it depends on the situation and maybe the area. People just wanted their dogs walked while at work or on vacation. Some people just wanted the dogs taken out to the yard too. That was rare but for elderly dogs who didn't well or far anymore, that was better for them. I also spent some nights at the house where the dog lived sometimes too, when people were away. There were a couple clients whose dogs stayed with me when their humans went on vaca as well. But that was just now and then. Lots of different scenarios in this business.

      Wordivore it is so much less stressful driving to each house and walking individually! If I could do it all again I would definitely do it that way. Much more sustainable in the long run (for sanity-sake lol). There definitely are lots of ways to do it

    No sick days? I'm out!, lol. Thank you, this is very informative. I live in Florida, a retirement community. I don't have to drive , I walk to clients houses in the community, and that's how I got started in this business. Many dog owners would see me walking everyday, sometimes up to 8 or 9 miles, walking for fitness. So, one day I figured since I was already out here for my health, why don't I walk some dogs as well, a business was born, lol. I was not to concerned about income being retired, but it's great to have the extra for travel vacations. Thanks for all tips you share, peace and blessing.

    You're right! I'm 64 and I rely heavily on youtube egoscue videos to keep my body in alignment to prevent injuries! I definitely notice when my body is out of alignment (foot aches, hip pops, etc). I never get sick (knock on wood) so I'm good there, but, when I need time off, I hook up with another dog walker in the area and she fits my pups in. Especially important to eat super healthy!!!

      Invest in jackets to keep with you. It'll make your life easier. We used to have issues when the weather got too cold/wet at a kennel I used to work for. We'd bust out the coats for the dogs that needed them and they would generally do much better about it.

    I agree with all of these! I've been walking for over a year and as an ex dancer I am kicking myself that I didn't stay on top of my flexibility. I hear you on needing to stretch out the legs each day. I get an oil change every 6 weeks and am always pushing through illness to get them out in the rain all the time. But it is the best decision I've ever made in my life. #dogwalkerlife

      People are generally stupid & cheap & abusive.
      I lost so many clients, b/c I just suggested that the dogs need a lot of exercise.
      People are keeping their dog in cages & don't even walk them.
      They think an hour a day is more than enough for a dog!
      I think in max security prison, they get at least 2 hours
      We consider it's inhumane treatment!!
      And the people do this to dogs & they even do worse stuff.
      Well, some people can stay cool when the see child abuse.
      I can't!
      And I am willing to walk the dogs for 3-4 hours, for free!!

    If someone doesn't want to have dogs in their vehicle (except for emergencies), they can do the style of dog walks that does not involve driving the dogs, just clients all near enough eachother to do neighborhood walks (solo or compatible groups).
    Each business can decide their own sick and weather policy and ideally communicate it very clearly with the contract and website. For example as a commenter said below they may have a boundary about hail, severe snowstorm, any thunder, floods, extreme ice on unsalted roads, too extreme of heat (good luck somewhere like Texas or Mississippi though), not walking when too sick or injured or emergency even if cannot give much advance notice, have an assistant who calls clients in that case, requiring client to have back-up walker ready vs. having an employee or referral, etc.

  • @Minecrew-vx3gl
    @Minecrew-vx3gl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    On your point about weather you shouldn’t walk a dog out in extreme heat as it burns the bottom of there paws and can cause extreme dehydration and other things even if you have water on you the extreme heat isn’t fit for an animal so you could initially take them to a dog pool that’s what we do with the animals in the shelter we have undercover areas and fill up mini kids pools so they can exercise

    I work for myself I take sick days if I feel like crap and I have a very intimate relationship with my clients I do not walk in the rain it’s ridiculous to get sick and end up missing more day instead of taking off a day or two. From my experience, a bike is okay if you use it to get from your home to the first client's house, but i suggest parking it while actually walking the dogs. Most dogs aren't used to walking with someone on a bike, and I've seen too many people go flying off the bike because of a dog. There are many dog walkers who use a bike to get to their first client, and then home at the end of the day, but they NEVER use it while walking the dogs. That's probably your best bet

      Great question! You can keep towels in your vehicle and ask clients to have a towel by the door ready for rainy/muddy/snowy days and a doormat where you may wear your messy shoes on since it'd take too long probably to remove shoes at each home. Ask them if they have a hose for if the dog got that messy. Keep an eye out for available hose or water spout near your route like at dog parks. Also have waterproof shoes or boots and maybe waterproof socks. P.S. Having a different pair of shoes in trunk to change into at end of shift can feel SO good!

      Yes! Small dogs is a great niche! In a way they are easier. Be mindful about hawks. Play it safe and avoid them interacting with large dogs. For exanple, if you do dog parks, best to stick to ones with a small dog section.

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used my own car, which was a Kia Soul. This obviously limited the amount and size of the dogs that could go into the car. Most dog walkers that I know upgrade once they've saved up enough money to get a van, so if you're planning on doing it long-term than that's something to aim for because there is more space

    • @jesshorsburgh580

      All dog walking buissnesses run their company differently. As someone who does this professionally, I have found to have had a different experience with the second and third points brought up in this video. Firstly, as buissness owners whose job it is to care for and ensure a dog's wellbeing I think it is unwise to walk dog's in heavy rain, hail, really hot weather etc. So for my buissness I usually postpone walks for a later date and at a discounted rate. I also make sure that before a client takes up my dog walking service that they are fully aware of my limitations (such as not walking when there is lighting close to the area I am walking or when I am unwell and cannot physically handle walking-this is okay to do as long as clients get enough notice and communication is clear. Also it reduces the chance for dog's being potential vectors for your sickness as well as safe gaurding vulnerable clients, who in my case, are often older in age and have medical conditions). I do this because safety for the dog's I walk, the local community and myself. I think it is unwise to walk dog's in such dangerous conditions as it only increases the dog's stress levels (which could cause the dog to be unpredicatable), your chance of obtaining an injury and sickness and the probability of loosing the dog even when you think the dog is fully secured. This is particularly true for group walks. For me, personally, I don't use car's so in those instances people have more options. It is important that as dog walker's, we think about not only our buissness image but also the quality of care we are providing, if a dog walker gets injured from tripping due to wet weather and cannot walk for an extended period than that is far worse than a cancellation or postoning and explaining the reasons as to why you made that decision. I have found clients to be more receptive when being more cautious rather than taking avoidable and let's face it unnecessary risks. Dog walker's are the one's providing their service, so they are well within their right to not walk due to such reasons. That is still professional, so their shouldn't be any shame surrounding it.

      You set your own prices, depending on how long you will walk the dog for, have a look at other dog walkers prices in your area so you can get an idea of price range. If you have friends or family with dogs try with theirs first or offer a couple of voluntary walks just so you can see if you enjoy it, plus word of mouth is fantastic for getting new clients :)

      Yes. Many people do. But it depends. Do the math: How many hours a week are you comfortable consistently driving and walking in most weather? How many dogs at once are you comfortable walking and what is that city's or park's laws on that? What price would you charge? Woukd you be self-empliyed or work for a company who takes a portion of your profit?
      I'm not asking for your answers, just suggesting you think on that.
