For those who are interested, Wukong is the lead character of a Chinese novel dated to 15 century. The author of the novel “ Wu Cheng En” is a scholar back to 15 century. Wu loves to read since he is small and is often praised as one who read all the books of that time. Wu spent most of his life to become an official of government to utilise his knowledge and serve the country. He always failed the official examination and when he finally become an official, he is already more than 50 years old. He only hold the position for 2 years and got jailed because being blackmail by other officials that Wu is corrupted. After his name is cleared, he got released from jail and he travelled around the world and wrote few novels. Journey to the west is one of them. As he does not have any descendant, most of the novels are lost throughout history and only completed novel kept is journey to the west due to the popularity. His creation of Wukong is the way of him challenging the policy and system of the country where the talented one will not get his opportunity.

1:47 A large body of evidence proves that Sun Wukong did not originate from the Indian mythological figure Hanuman. Apart from both being monkeys, there are few detailed similarities between the two characters. It is well known that the original story of Journey to the West is based on the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang's journey from Central Asia to South Asia. Due to the Himalayas blocking the way, it was impossible to travel directly. Xuanzang endured many hardships to obtain Buddhist scriptures from South Asia, which also proves that it was nearly impossible for ancient Indian culture to spread to China by crossing the Himalayas. Moreover, Sun Wukong has many documented Chinese folk tales that serve as his original image. The image of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong, existed in folk stories and popular beliefs several centuries before the novel Journey to the West was completed.Hanuman, on the other hand, is a figure from Hindu mythology, and it was very late when this myth spread to the Central Plains of China. Thus, in terms of time, Hanuman is not the prototype for Sun Wukong.
The story of Sun Wukong is the most well-known mythological story to the Chinese people. This novel brings many different thoughts to people's minds, such as heavenly gods are not necessarily good people, having power does not mean you can do whatever you want, even the great and the good do wrong, people have to go through trials and tribulations before they can gain something, and you need to be alert to the omnipresent bureaucracy.

Yeah, the message is lost because people focus on the mythology and how overpowered the character is. Like dragonball z, people just enjoy the fight scenes and don't care the literature that inspired it.

    • @HY31494
      @HY31494 ปีที่แล้ว +31

@@Unspeakable035 It's not about creating your own fate, Chinese culture is not about your self identity, it's about understanding how the world works and be humble. Wukong or the monkey king is the strongest character in the novel besides Buddha, but he never learn to be part of the world, that's why he has to go through a journey to gain "humanity"
There are much deeper philosophical questions in the novel, but if you read it as creating your own fate, then it's much less enjoyable and will misguide you to understand Chinese philosophy, it's very much embrace your own fate and understand the outcome of your action, and in the process you will get the chance to learn what is it to be alive, rather you understand it or not is up to you.

There is also an underlying message, Wukong is by nature a primordial being, and the Stone he's born from is thought to be connected to Chinese Creation Myths, and he is being "tamed" by Buddhism. This is a underlying theme in the progression of Chinese theology- Taming of the Supernatural.

There will be a bunch of Indians who will say that the prototype of Sun Wukong is Hanuman. Yes, he must be right, even if Hanuman is a Hindu figure. Even if in ancient times only Buddhism spread to China and Hinduism was hardly spread in China. Even if the author of Journey to the West did not know what Hinduism is. Even if the place where the scriptures were obtained in Journey to the West was Tianzhu (the ancient Chinese called the Indus River radiating basin Tianzhu). Even if the origin of Sun Wukong has its own prototype in China. But the concept of Indians is: Hinduism has a monkey god > Buddhism and Hinduism have the same religious origin > China also spread Buddhism > There is a monkey in the story of the spread of Buddhism > The monkey of Hinduism appeared earlier = Sun Wukong came from Hanuman.

Sun Wukong's 72 Transformations include abilities such as Penetrating the Underworld, Commanding Spirits, Carrying Mountains, Controlling Water, Borrowing Wind, Creating Fog, Praying for Clear Skies, Summoning Rain, Sitting on Fire, Entering Water, Covering the Sun, Riding the Wind, Breathing Flames, Swallowing Swords, Containing a World within a Bottle, Divine Speed, Walking on Water, Multiplication, Invisibility, Reattaching a Severed Head, Immobilizing Others, Slaying Demons, Summoning Deities, Chasing Souls, Summoning Clouds, Grabbing the Moon, Teleportation, Disassembling the Body, Storing Objects in a Staff, Stopping a Flow, Dispelling Calamities, Relieving Disasters, Transforming with a Finger, Shedding the Corpse, Shifting Scenery, Summoning Beasts, Riding on Clouds, Gathering Beasts, Commanding Birds, and Super Strength.
The 72 Transformations is a mystical ability mastered by Sun Wukong, a central character in the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West. This technique allows Sun Wukong to transform into various forms, including humans, animals, plants, and even inanimate objects. The transformations are not limited to changes in appearance but also extend to alterations in abilities, enabling Sun Wukong to adapt to different environments and situations. The characteristics of the 72 Transformations include:
Diversity of Transformations: Sun Wukong can use the 72 Transformations to change himself or others into any desired form, whether it be a human or a non-human entity.
Wide Range of Transformations: He can transform into something long or short, large or small, male or female, old or young, and even into an invisible state.
Powerful Transformative Abilities: Through the 72 Transformations, Sun Wukong can adapt to various environments, whether as a fish swimming in water, a bird flying in the sky, or any object within the heavens and earth.
Sun Wukong's 72 Transformations are not only reflected in his ability to change into various forms but also in his use of these transformations to solve problems and face challenges. For instance, during his battle with Er Lang Shen, Sun Wukong transformed into a sparrow, a cormorant, a fish, a house, and even into Er Lang Shen himself to evade and confuse his opponent. The 72 Transformations represent not just changes in appearance, but also an expression of his capabilities and adaptability, making Sun Wukong an uncontainable hero in Journey to the West.

Your description is pretty accurate and true to the novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en. However, one thing you got wrong is, when Sun Wukong first proclaimed himself Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Jade Emperor did send an army to capture him. They sent Nezha and his father, Li Jing, aka Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li. However, Sun Wukong, defeated them, and that is why the Jade Emperor reluctantly agreed to Sun's title and made him Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden upon suggestion of Gold Star. However, in your depiction, you seem to suggest Sun first fought Nezha after he is bestowed the title Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden, whereas in the original story, it's before.

great video. There are some concepts you mentioned here misunderstood by even most Chinese. Like the 72 transformations, many people think that it's just transforming into 72 things.
One thing though, the picture of four heavenly King in the intro are actually four devine beasts representing 4 poles of the earth, seasons, elements among many other thing, and the 4 heavenly kings actually came from Buddhism, they bring good weather and they are protectors of dharma the first ring of heaven and mortal realm.
And another minor detail (not mean to correct you)-- 'gold star' is actually the incarnation of Venus, Chinese call it 'gold' star. The word 'gold' has nothing to do with the color or the texture of the actual gold. The word 'gold' in ancient Chinese actually means metal, we call the actual gold 'yellow gold' and silver 'white gold', iron 'black gold'. And 'gold' in its narrow definition is actually bronze.
Now the full name of 'gold star' is' 太白金星' can be roughly translated as ultra-white 'gold' star, so based on what I said above, gold star is actually 'silver' star (Venus)

The version I'm used to is the moment WuKong acquired his immortality/72 transformations, his powers could be felt through 9 levels of heaven and 18 levels of hell, causing quakes through both realms. He then ate the peaches that grant hundreds of years of cultivation and lifespan per peach. He actually ate the entire garden. Then he destroyed the book of life and death in hell, wiping his name out for good, giving him unlimited time to live. He was as immortal as you can get without becoming a Buddha, which takes you out of the cycle of life and death. You will live forever, no need to reincarnate. There were some demons that could rival WuKong. Like the centipede demon that absorbed the powers of over a thousand demons and acquired the power of 1000 transformations and could use the powers of any demon or god he transforms into. Wukong did require help from time to time from guinyin.

Then Buddha interferes and imprisons him under a mountain for hundreds of years with Wukong's fury and bloodlust never subsiding. Seeing this going nowhere Buddha makes a deal with Wukong, in exchange for his freedom he is given the task of protecting a naive monk who is journeying west to acquire Buddhist sutras from India. Along the way they encounter various challenges and meet good and bad people/demons. Through the journey Wukong learns humility and humanity and let's go of his old ways, which is what Buddha intended all along.

I actually know Wukong is not at all related to Hanuman. Journey to the West was published in the 16th century about a real 7th century Buddhist monk named Xuanzang who travelled to India and back.
There is an illustration of Xuanzang's return from India from long before JTTW was published, and one of his disciples looks almost exactly like Wukong. He had a very hairy face and even his arms were hairy. He looked very ape like. This is no doubt the insipration for Wukong.
Scholars hypothesize that this was probably one of Xuanzang's disciples from Central Asia, possibly an Afghan. The Chinese illustrator probably heard of hairy people from Cental Asia but had never seen one and just went overboard with a monkey like caricature.
So this was just a coincidence that Hanuman was also a monkey. The Author of JTTW drew inspiration from a totally different source.

    • @clorkmagnus
      @clorkmagnus ปีที่แล้ว

Not really, many heaven figures can fight him on their own or outclass him.
Back then he fought the heaven along side the demon kings and a lot of the deities on heaven were from the losing side of the deity war that happened thousand of years before the monkey king’s revolt. They probably didn’t try their best.
It’s a story that were written to make fun of the government and corruption at that time. It turned out many of the deities’ pets who were in the lost side in the of the last deity conflict were let loose and created a huge problem for the monkey king and the monk. It turned out a ton of them can fight the money king if they use divine items. For example, the one that capture his weapon, the one that use a divine item to imprison him in the fake Buddha palace, the fan that can blow him away etc. Yang Jian can chase him around but can’t capture him, Garuda can match his might…etc

To understand the story of the journey to the west, you first need to learn the background of the writing of the story is based on the historical journey that really happened a Buddhist monk from the Tang dynasty to India to take the holy book.
The journey was written in an epic form spiced with philosophical Buddhism.
In Buddhist teachings, it is explained in the journey of human life (in this case depicted by the figure of the Tang monk) will always be haunted by 3 roots of evil, namely Lobha (Greed), Sin (Hatred) and Moha (Ignorance). In this case Lobha (Greed) is represented by the figure of Patkay who is always tempted by worldly pleasures, Dosa (Hatred) is represented by the figure of Wukong who is always fiery, easily angered and rebellious, and Moha (Ignorance) is represented by the figure of Wujing who is naive.
The success or failure of the human (Tang monk) in achieving his goal depends on how he control the three roots of evil (his three disciples).

For easier understanding, the story time line of Wukong is like this:
Stage1. Stone: When the world was split form Genesis into Sky and Land by axe, the sky got leak. A goddess forged some magical stone to fix it. And one stone was leftover on the mountain.

Stage2. Stone monkey: The leftover magical stone absorbed energy of universe for hundreds of years and evolved the own soul of it. The energy was overloaded then the stone was broke out into a monkey form. (So there's no gender of it, pure natural. 🤣)

Stage3. Monkey king: The stone monkey met common monkey and joined the group. But it could not die by age. So it become King of the kind.(found it's cave in this part)

Stage4. Horse keeper of Sky palace: Some god noticed the turn of that stone, He came for monkey king and teach it some magic. After some accidents, the monkey king was crewed by Sky palace to herd horses.

Stage5. Great Sage Equal to Heaven: Monkey King find that it was fooled by the Sky government(to send him to herd horses and lie to him that's the top title in sky), so it was too angry and it messed up an important feast. No one there can beat it at the time. For conciliating, the boss of sky palace(the Jade Emperor) acknowledged to promote Monkey king as "Great Sage Equal to Heaven". And Buddha was summoned for help as well. (Notice: Was summoned). Then Buddha beat the Monkey king.

Stage6. Wukong: After 500 years stuck under the mountains, the monk for seeking to the west came up, and shown mercy for it. The monk offer it a chance to help him at the trip for exchange of it's own freedom. Anyone who want to become a monk needs to cut down all civil connection, including the title and the name. Then monkey king abandon its title and past, got the Call-name as Wukong.

For whoever is interested in Sun WuKong, I’m gonna share a real and short story told by the monks. This happened around ww2 in China, two young Chinese ghost-speakers got bored and tried to summon ghosts. Then one of them got possessed by a spirit passing by. And the possessed guy wont stop doing back flips. So the other guy asked what the spirit wants? The spirit told the guy that he’s the Monkey King, and he’s looking for his master Xu Pu Ti 虚菩提. He will leave if they can help summoning his master for him. So they tried summoning Xu Pu Ti. Then the naughty monkey king suddenly left, and the possessed guy stopped doing backflips.
