A few fun facts about this car: 1. The side rear mirrors have different sizes and shapes - this is not a failure, but deliberate design. When Mercedes launched the W124, by default only the mirror of the passenger side was power adjustable, the mirror of the driver side was mechanical, because the driver could easily reach it. 2. Today the W124 is regarded as one of the most sturdy and reliable cars Mercedes ever built. When they introduced the W124 in 1985, it came with over 30 technical innovations - and was a menace. The singke windscreen wiper was a mess, the new, glued in front and rear windows broke and much more. It took Mercedes extreme efforts to make the car better. 3. The predecessor W123 came with a height adjustabke driver's seat. However, the mechanism was part of the platform, and it was only on the left side of the platform. So all W123 with right hand drive came with a height adjustable passsenger seat only;-) The W124 got height adjustable seats on both sides. 4. The W123 had a weird vacuum operated system which powered the door locks. It had a vacuum tank which allowed to lock and unlock all doors for three or four times until the tank was empty, so you had to start the engine and refill it. In the W124, Mercedes installed an electric pump to feed the vacuum tank. Why for heaven's sake didn't they use electric power locks like anybody else? They were too noisy;-) Jeff, congratulations for this nice car. I like them - but you'll soon will find out that the front seats are lousy. Maybe you should replace them with a set of decent Recaros.
Jeff. You're NOT crazy! This is an amazing find! I love it! I'd just swap bigger, later model factory wheels and leave it at stock height. Then rebuild the engine, service the tranny and drive it forever
Great choice. Around 2001 ago I bought a 1987 W124 300E for my daughter. I drove it home from the seller. Never been so impressed with a car. Did nothing exceptional but did everything perfectly. It started me on a huge mercedes collection but I still have a 300E. 😁
@@___disso--bey___ Yep, the so called baby Benz. To get that one right they did some extensive testing!!! And they got it right. My father had one of these back in the days, a 2.3. Those 16v variants where (are) something else!!!

Wow, there's a blast from the past. I had several 123 and this 124 Merc from new, stunning car. Old Mercs- not new ones- are great. In Albania for a short period of time during the 90’s the only car on the streets and the then no roads were old mercs. To this day a car in Albania is referred to as a Benz
Great find. 👍 An interesting choice of car for the previous owners: We're elderly (mid-70s) & LOVE our MB 2011 B200 Anniversary. It's slow, bur economical, holds an obscene amount of stuff with its low & wide hatch opening. Getting in & out is a breeze as the seats are like chairs & has tall door openings. We just walk straight onto them without lowering or banging our heads & my mid-90s Mother-in-Law is delighted..

Welcome to the 124 family Jeff! Got myself a 300CE 5 years ago, the engineering and build quality is just another level. 400kkm for a w124 is nothing! my dad had a 300 turbo diesel back when I was a teenager (I'm 40 rn) what a car! I love the interiors of mercs of that era, one might say boring but... after a few rides you start to use all the controls and buttons without looking, everything is sort of where it should to be. These things were built when Mercedes had pride in their engineering and quality and in my opinion were the last of true quality Benz's. I bought a 98 W202 C280 as a daily 10 years ago. I kept it for 3 years before passing it on to my newly licensed neice who has put just over 100k on it over 7 years and still loves it. I did rebuild the front end at 220k and the rear is now due to be done at 280k but parts are so easy to find and cheap from the right suppliers.
W124 and W126 (W means Wagen in German) are the last two Models from Mercedes, which are the best they ever produced. German W124 Taxis Drive to 2 mio Kilometers. I have had a 300CE 24 V Sportline from 1998 to 2001 and i have driven 100.000 km in one year. I think 95% of all parts are still avaiable. The best Engine was the V8 in 4.2 or 5.0 Liters, but also 320 are quick enough. 60 days in one year is not much. Best wishes from Bonn/Germany
Congrats on the Benz. As long as it doesn't have the dreaded biodegradable wiring loom insulation, well done. I think the problem started around 1994, and if you have done 400k kms unlikely a problem. I'm just down the road from you in KV with a 22yr old CLK500 benz owned in family from new and going superb. Also a 1973 alfa spider on conditional plates, great system in NSW !. Your on a good thing!!
Hi Jeff, great choice.. I had a E320 ( 1994) brilliant car, did appro 60 000kms and had NO problems when I stupidity sold it , it had done 345,000kms. Apparently it is still going I've seen it around. I currently have a MB V230 van and love it. Parts are still available(some). locally but I found parts out of Japan are cheap and easy to obtain. That's a nice car, you most probably know that model has been used as a taxi all over the world and do extremely high mileage . Good luck. Love your videos always. Cheers from NZ

good move - enjoy! every sports car owner gets a Benz - eventually. looking fwd to your attention to it. my C230K shows 365k km... doing fine, even (especially!) for long trips.
I have the previous model but a 1982 280. the body work is excellent but I have had to do work on suspension mountings and bushes I would advise against lowering the car maybe uprated shocks and bushings but that's as far as I would go if you want some comfort. The engines seem bullet proof and I have a L200 pickup with a Merc 300td engine swap for work that has now done 230k MILES since the swap
In South Australia it’s around a hundred bucks for Classic Registration, which gets you 90 days per year on a log book. I have some 70s 80s 90s motorcycles on that system. We get to keep our plates. Cars must be 25 or more years old. You have to be a member of a club - go Walkerville All Cars Club! ❤
Love this Jeff. The 124 Mercedes is one of the best. Bulletproof build quality. How many 30 year old cars with 400+kms will have paint and interior stay intact?
Never been a fan of the W124 (mine is a CLK320 C208) but this seems to be a nice example. 400K km is a number, but I do not think that is a real problem when the car is taken care of. Have fun.
Everyone will say keep as is and that does make sence BUT this is Jeff !!!! make it to a E500 tribute car modern MB V8 upgrade the rest to fallow and have a perfect daily sleeper . Have fun Jeff
This was the last of the era when Mercedes were built for reliability. Since 2000, they are designed to barely last through a lease period. At one point, they built all cars with biodegradable plastic electrical harnesses that all ended up scrapped. In the 60s-90s, Mercedes were cars people bought for reliability and huge mileage, but the advent of leasing and cheap debt ended all that .
intermittent cruise fault is probably in the brake light earthing/contact circuit in the tail lamp assy itself. It's like a circuit board with globes. Clean and re tension the globe contacts. I've owned W124's and worked on quite a few. If you get an intermittent engine miss it is most likely the engine harness as these were made with a biodegradable insulation and are a known fault and about $1200 to replace. stiffish throttle pedal with long travel is pretty normal. Otherwise the W124 series are a fantastic vehicle.
W124 is an excellent car. E220 possibly a little underpowered compared with the 6-cylinder variants, but it will cruise all day at above the legal limit in Aus, for sure!
I love these era of Benz - they were like tanks so opposed to the junk they sell now. Yep it will be slow but it will be great shopping cart and dependable wheel barrow.
Good smoker. Cruise dropout on my e class after much pain to diagnose turned out to be new tyres different brand on front old on rear, this meant the speed differential front to back went outside mercs limit
congrats jeff, a very reliable and solid old madam, give her a bit of love and she takes you where you need to go. dont mind the milage, she can go much further than double what she has done so far
I worked with a guy in the 90's who had this car, he had it lowered,a nice set of wheels and a bodykit.. Ok it wasn't fast but it looked cool .. Pretty sure the kit was an amg , not sure but yes a good ol' car.. Kind regards from Turkey 👍

The 124 is Great car had a few of them over the years, pretty bullit proof, resolder the connections on the fuel pump relay board, common failure
Good to know.
Nice I have a coupe as does my brother
None of the W124s in the family have even had a rattle and they ride so well
Awesome!! It would be kind of cool to see you apply zero mods to your "most practical" car but bring the operating condition up to 100%...
Gotta love a Merc. they go forever. Tanks!
Love this Jeff. The 124 Mercedes is one of the best. Bulletproof build quality. How many 30 year old cars with 400+kms will have paint and interior stay intact?
Just love these cars. That's a great buy. Also lot of aftermarket spares available to spruce it up.
nooo waaaayyy....nice choise Jeff 😊
Very good choice.conforable and super reibol
Never been a fan of the W124 (mine is a CLK320 C208) but this seems to be a nice example. 400K km is a number, but I do not think that is a real problem when the car is taken care of. Have fun.
I am thinking along the same lines and am on the lookout for an E320
Love it, nothing is more comfortable than a merc.. by the shadow in the thumbnail I though this was an old skyline 2.8 gtx🤷🏼♂️
Great find mate
I all up for historic vehicles. Got a few to choose from. Very cheap to run interesting cars in the uk
intermittent cruise fault is probably in the brake light earthing/contact circuit in the tail lamp assy itself.
I will check out that ground. Thanks. Fingers crossed it is that easy ;)
Be good to see a detailing on a budget video on this one
nice number plate....very special people
For what you need, that's a good find.
Good smoker. Cruise dropout on my e class after much pain to diagnose turned out to be new tyres different brand on front old on rear, this meant the speed differential front to back went outside mercs limit
That sounds like a newer Merc issue. This is not that intelligent.
@@HomeBuiltByJeff Maybe, still has abs. It's the one after so w210. If it works at low speed but drops out at higher speed that was the symptom
Nice one and a German brad so inline with Porche
congrats jeff, a very reliable and solid old madam, give her a bit of love and she takes you where you need to go. dont mind the milage, she can go much further than double what she has done so far
I like it. With a little TLC it will be an awesome daily driver.
Great car to have if your handy around the Garage and tools! Therefore fine for you ! Love it! Bill Mc
Terrific car easy to work on I'm really happy for you mate
Proper car built properly will last forever when serviced regularly, awesome turning circle great to woft about in 👍👌🔥
What a good choice, interior is quite new
She is in good hands
I worked with a guy in the 90's who had this car, he had it lowered,a nice set of wheels and a bodykit..
Ok it wasn't fast but it looked cool ..
Pretty sure the kit was an amg , not sure but yes a good ol' car..
Kind regards from Turkey 👍
Not crazy! I love when people keep older cars alive to do what they were built to do.
What a great find! Nice daily.
Well Jeff , that's the exact Mercedes i wasn't thinking of😁
What a winner! nice to keep it as it ..
