      Very welcome. That lever can definitely be a mystery especially if the hydraulics aren't working correctly anyway.

    This is the best video explaining how "draft control" works on the 8n, I rebuilt my pump and replaced the cylinder and piston, made a few adjustments and plowing with a mold board plow is a pleasure! The tractor pretty much runs itself, I've pulled 2 bottom 14" with ease. Thank you for the video!

    Great! 👍 Very helpful video! I just bought an 8N on an estate auction for the parents of one of my high school classmates. I got it home yesterday evening it runs fantastic, but when I raised the 3 points, it went up and refused to go back down again. So, I was trying to figure what the problem was and noticed that little lever under the seat that my 1940 9N doesn't have. I knew that the 8Ns had a draft control but didn't know how it worked, and I assumed that was the draft control lever. Now I understand how it's supposed to function. 😊
    I still have to figure out why it won't go down. I'll probably end up having to tear it apart. Since it was bought new by my classmate's Dad, I knew it had been taken care of all its life, I'd hoped I'd bought one old tractor that I wouldn't have to work on right away and I could hook the Bushhog to it and go to work. 😂 That's the joy of buying old tractors. 😅 Sometimes, I think it'd be nice to buy a nice new tractor but they are so expensive! New machines are subject to break down also, plus they are overly complicated and when they break repairs are prohibitively expensive. 😢 So many unnecessary electronics that will be obsolete in a number of years and the complicated parts will not be available so when they are as old as my newest tractor, a 1957 Farmall, the new machines will be scrap. 😢 Besides, if I sold all 10 of my old tractors, I wouldn't have enough money for a new one. 😂

    • @xpsgarage
      @xpsgarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Since it won't go down then the fluid release valve on the pump is probably plugged up or broken. Good luck. I seem to have to work on everything new or old.

    Dang, I’m almost 60, grew up with an 801 with the same setup, lever was maybe a little lower. I never knew how it worked, just that it did😂. An 11 year old kid doesn’t really care much about that. I just thought it was cool my father let me scrape the driveway. He never liked messing with that tractor anyway. Sold the tractor out of the estate 3 years ago. It eventually ran. It’s funny what you miss about an old tractor-the smells, the throaty sound it made when you cranked it, the springy seat, the leaky radiator spraying you on a hot day…

    My 3 point drops to the ground slowly when the clutch is not engaged and draw dont work. Do you by chance have a trouble shoot list / parts list

    • @xpsgarage
      @xpsgarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They will all drop slowly because the hydraulic piston has rings like a car piston so they don't seal 100%. There is a piston out of a latter model tractor that some people switch to. It has a rubber and leather seal that won't leak off. Do you have a service manual? The I&T manual is really good and you can get it a Tractor Supply or off Amazon. I don't really have a trouble shooting list. I just figure it out as I go but the service manual has really helped me and it does have a parts list.

    You did a good job of explaining how to use the Ferguson 3 point Hitch system.
    If You do anymore videos on the 3point system, l would like to see You give Credit to the Man who developed this system: Harry Ferguson.
    Ferguson invented and, patented His system. He put it on Ford’s new Tractor in 1939 with a Handshake agreement This was called the 9N.
    After the war, in 1947, Harry Ferguson came out with His own tractor the TE and TO 20.
    He also denied Ford permission to put His patented system on Their updated Tractor the well known 8N ( 1948 ). Ford ignored Ferguson and used it anyway. This resulted in a lawsuit by Ferguson which lagged along for four years until August of 1952 ( one year exactly B - 4 Ferguson’s merger with Massey ). The Court ordered Ford to stop producing the 8N and also Fined Ford.
    I am a collector of MF, particularly the small utility tractors and work, in particular, on the three point properly called the Ferguson System.

    Ford calls the little lever "Position Control" lever in their operator's manuals, probably because up to the 8N, the 9N and 2Ns did not have position control, only draft control. The real term should be Position and Draft Control Selector lever. But I digress.

    Can you use the draft control while operating a brush hog- mower to help control the height of the mower deck, cause my property's pretty Bumpy.

    • @xpsgarage
      @xpsgarage  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately it won't work like that. First off in draft mode it will drop the mower all the way to the ground. Second, draft mode has to have constant drag on the implement that actually pushes forward on the top link. The mower will just lift all three links up.

    • @xpsgarage
      @xpsgarage  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It could be the cylinder or possibly a pump valve sticking open. If it is the cylinder I would go with the piston out of a Jubilee that has the o-ring and leather backup ring. They will hold better than the original style. I've bought parts from Just8ns and Steiners. I usually just go with whoever has it in stock at the best price.

    So if the lever is vertical (position mode) if there is pressure on the top link, will it still lift the 3 point?
    My Uncle has a backhoe on his tractor. When you try to dig and push down with the bucket, the 3 point raises. Wondering if something is wrong internally.

    • @xpsgarage

    @FreePatriot13 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I knew at least partly what it is used for. I notice you flipped your lever while quadrant lever was all the way to the top., then lowered it a little and blade went to the ground. I have been lowering blade, then flipping the little lever. But quadrant won't then raise the plow/blade/implement until I flip the little lever back up. Next, which lever are you calling draft control and which are you calling position control? Also, when latching third link to tractor, I have been told the higher fastening point is for lifting lighter weight loads, thus the lower holes are for lifting heavier weights. Ever hear that? What you said about it makes sense to me. Enjoyed your video. Good to know.

    • @xpsgarage
      @xpsgarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The lever under the seat sets it to either draft or position mode. When the lever is pointed up that is position. When it is down that is draft. When in draft mode and the quadrant is all the way up then the implement should raise all the way up. As soon as you lower the quadrant at all the implement should drop to the ground to start plowing. The farther down that you set the quadrant then the deeper it should plow. If you are in draft mode and the implement will not raise when the quadrant is all the way up then you need to adjust the quadrant by loosening the 4 bolts at the base and moving the entire unit forward or back. When lifting the top link holes on the tractor are more for changing the angle of the top link when fully up which changes the angle of the implement. I may make a comparison video on that. Not sure how much it impacts lifting capacity.

    • @FreePatriot13
      @FreePatriot13 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I push the little draft control lever down, hydraulics immediately lower to the ground. They will not lift again until I push the same little lever back to the upright position. Then control returns to the quadrant. I've been trying to use it by lowering what ever implement down to just above the ground, then push the draft lever forward so it will drop the rest of the way to the ground. It then works by trailing the implement properly, but I have no control over lifting it until I flip the little lever back upright. Hey! It's an improvement over what I had! Until the lift assembly on the top plate was fixed, the lift only half worked at all. What's up with my draft control? Just adjust the quadrant forward or backward? Thanks for the help.
