The advantage of turboprops on unprepared runways is undeniable, but there are some nuances here. The choice between the propeller model was due to several factors, such as: what type of environment and runway it will operate in most of the time and whether there are design solutions that can mitigate these deficiencies. It is very important to remember that the Brazilian Air Force - FAB defined the aircraft's operational requirements. These requirements are extremely strict, as the aircraft needs to operate in very difficult conditions, especially in the Amazon rainforest and on the Antarctic continent, where the FAB operates missions in support of the Brazilian Navy's Brazilian Antarctic Program - PROANTAR within the scope of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). It is also worth mentioning that the Brazilian Air Force holds the intellectual property of the project (since it was financed by the treasury). They certainly took these issues into consideration, especially since the FAB carried out the integration of the Amazon region for 40 years on the back of a turboprop, the "Father of the Amazon" De Havilland Canada DHC-5 Bufallo.
Embraer needs to show off a wild variety of configuration packages. I.E. Close Air Support (CAS=aka spectre), winter operations and ski's, refueling vehicle, logistics transport, folding wing design and finally ECW. Once they show off these varieties they will get alot of business.
The C-130 isn't going anywhere. One of the strongest points about the C-130 is its speed. Its ability to fly slow is the very reason it's used for so many different types of missions. I've been on a C-130 that made a night landing on a dried up lake bed with the pilots using night vision goggles. If they're after speed, fly a C-141. If they're after payload, fly a C-5M Super Galaxy or a C-17 Globemaster.
Apparently, they missed the reason why the C130 is still being used. Prop driven aircraft are inherently safer to operate on unimproved airfields. Less chance to damage the engines. We use C17s for heavier loads from improved fields. Why add another airframe?
If you want supplant the J model herky bird, it won't be for another DECADE, Fort Worth is booked another 10 years building them now. The Herky already does everything you mentioned.
As a cargo mover the C-130 alphabet has one point that kept it any military thought. It can go just about everywhere. Not just dropping cargo it can land on improvised landing stripes. Moving in or out personal on abandoned air stripes or even smaller civilian runways to small for even small bizjets. It is why I asked about the Embraer take off and landing distance and what the landing gear can handle unpaved runway. While it's improved cargo carry if it can't cover these smaller an isolated locations. I do not see the C-130 being retired completely.
Some Americans in the comments just felt the hit... Relax, you are still number one and will be for a long time. Despite all the issues and problems here, we Brazilians still have things to be proud of. A third-world country like ours, competing in technology with the most powerful nation in the world, is something we all should applaud, even you guys. A lot of the knowledge we have, we learned from you. And remember, Brazilians are your allies, not enemies.
Hey my friend, I thought you'd be interested in my take on this. I flew C-130Es in the USAF for almost 9 years. I'm a fan of the J model, but never flew it. Having said that, I find the C-390 to be a potentially outstanding machine! You see, the basic C-130 design has realized it's full potential with the J model. Don't get me wrong, it's still an excellent design that will be flying for many years to come. However, when the USAF decides to start replacing the J model, I'm hoping that it will be a completely different design. I'm not sure when that will be, as the J models rolling off the assembly line have decades of service life ahead of them. I honestly loved flying the Herc (even the old E model), but there are other excellent designs out there that are potentially better. The C-390 is one of those. It will take time to prove itself though, as the C-130 has clearly demonstrated it's capabilities for nearly 70 years. To close, I applaud Brazil and Embraer on producing an excellent and beautiful design, and wish it success. Cheers
I think everyone just wants to hear some facts and to be allowed to make a decision based on the facts, not some sales pitch and "its better and I'm not giving any facts to show it is better". Let the people decide based on some facts. C-130 is old but there's a reason it's still flying and has a fanbase. Would love to see a breakdown of turbofan vs turboprop and why one is better than the other in this situation. "faster" isn't really what people are looking for. If we wanted a C130 with turbofans, they'd have built one. There's a reason why it has turboprops. What is the reasoning for turbofan on the KC390? more data! more info! :)
With both at max take off load, the 130J can rotate in 3300' at SL. . Takes 5000' for the 390. The Js have more range at max load then the max loaded 390 by over 600 miles.
Hardly a C130 killer. One would think that a channel speaking from a position of authority would have recognized that while full of gee wiz gear, it is a jet and therefore not suitable for unimproved runways (dirt) because jets don’t do FOD. Turbo props are considerably better at landing and taking off in the middle of nowhere.
I am no aircraft authority, but I had similar questions. (Plus, you’d think Brazil, with its unique terrain, would KNOW that.) Also: What about distance for takeoff and landing? FWIW, my father-in-law was in charge of metals QA for the Herc at the Lockheed plant here in Marietta. There is a significant amount of 130 memorabilia around the house!
The turboprop is superior to the turbojet/fan engines. The prop shields the engine from almost all FOD sources, except birds, which the prop stops around 60% at stopping birds for going down the intake. I have had to remove remains a lot of times over the years, it's amazing much guts and feathers you find stuck to the forward bearing struts. The T56 will eat a bird without taking any any damage. The only clue the crew may have the took a bird down the an engine is the smell of bad cooked chicken. When the last B-52 is finally retired a C-130 will pick up the flight crew and fly them back their home base.
I know how competent the Portuguese Air Force are delivering military transport, praised frequently by its NATO allies. If they chose Embraer C-390 to replace their C-130 Hercules, then it must be a great aircraft.

You should do a side by side comparison of C-390 and C130J. Speed, capacity - weight and volume , minimum runway needed, ability to land on unpaved landing strips and high altitude landing strips.
Emphasis should be made on "the minimum runway needed and the ability to land on unpaved landing strips". For anything else the US already has the C17.
The Brazilian Air Force has already proven this to other military forces and the Portuguese Air Force is also doing this. In Brazil, its performance and savings in maintenance were so great that they accelerated the retirement of the C130 and ended up reducing the order for the 390 as it is so capable that fewer aircraft will be needed. There are nations begging to receive theirs as soon as possible due to the difficulty in operating their C130s. So much so that the first prototype that today flies as a laboratory in the Brazilian Air Force must be loaned until the customer starts receiving their 390.
@@k9killer221 Yep, the E2 series is more fuel efficiency (even though both use P&W turbofan engine) because is designed with advanced aerodynamics and state of the art avionics. It has significantly lower maintenance costs due to the extended intervals between maintenance checks and the use of fewer parts. It is known for its quieter cabins, which enhances passenger comfort along with spacious overhead bins, and ergonomic seating. For the airline, it offers shorter runway performance and quicker turnarounds, which is beneficial to maximize aircraft utilization. The Praetor 600 competes well in the super-midsize category, but it is important to note that the Gulfstream G700/G750 series operates in the ultra-long-range category, thus serving a different market.
Whoever had the idea of a name for this jet is a PR master: KC meaning from the very start that it's not only a cargo plane, 390 is 3 X 130 and finally the Millennium, meaning the project not only belongs to the 21st century but also reminds of the most badass of the fictional ships, the Millennium Falcon.

The C-390 looks like a solid aircraft with good stats and capabilities. Being able to perform a mission as good as or exceeding C-130 is very appealing. Having two jet engines rather than 4 props is very positive reducing maintenance, sustainment and overall costs. Looks like a promising future for the C390.
Embraer is a Brazilian company and since C130 is a military aircraft, I find it highly unlikely that a contract would be awarded to Embraer, especially given the way Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is showing support for Putin's aggression. Too much risk. Embraers are great here in the US as business jets and it should stay that way.
The journey of the C-390, from its initial announcement to its production, highlights Embraer's commitment to delivering top-notch military aircraft. This is just the beginning for the C-390.
OK. I've listened to your video on the specifications of the hot selling C390. I have a problem, what is the shortest unimproved landing strip that it can land on. In comparing the C130 to the C390 you failed to mention that. To be useful it would have to be shorter than a C130 landing strip. You put a lot of emphasis on how much the C390 haul in terms of cargo and people. If that were the requirement, we would use something more like a C17.
As a combat veteran Paratrooper I'm fully acquainted with the earlier C130 versions have trained extensively and jumped many combat missions. She's a wonderful Paratrooper aircraft whether exiting at 600ft port and starboard on static line operations, or freefall HALO tailgating although it gets somewhat chili in the back climbing through 15,000 ft to whatever altitude the mission demanded.
Well, the c390 currently has exactly 9 aircraft in service in 2 countries.... since 2014!!! They have a LOOOONG way to go to put a dent in the number of c-130's currently in service globally! To date, there are 500+ of just the J model currently in active service, let alone countries that are still flying older variants. Plus, they will have a tough time competing with almost 70 years of continuous, uninterrupted service... globally! On top off all of that, the per unit cost of the c390 is significantly more than a C-130. the c390 is averaging around $145 million where the c-130J averages around $75 million per unit! Good luck toppling the king!
Nothing will replace the C-130J or any other variant. Yes there are other types of aircraft similar, but not something to completely replace it. You can not fly slow in a turbofan powered aircraft compared to a turboprop aircraft, which is needed in certain situations. I can see this aircraft only added to the long list of cargo multi roll list, but will never replace a single aircraft.
I certainly prefer the Airbus A400M as it is a Turbo-prop aircraft for which the engine maintenance cost is way lower than any jet engine, it also cost a lot less in fuel and has a better range under same MTOW than the C-390. It lands in and take off from shorter runways which enable it to almost land and take off from about any land strip. Its payload is way better under any configuration. It has a better range under any weight (10, 20, 30 tons). The price of a C-390 is definitely way higher as it is a jet.
Embraer's history with military jets is impressive, and the C-390 Millennium is a testament to their expertise and innovation. This aircraft is set to revolutionize military transport.
I don't think that's going to happen. I never saw any real comparison but from what I looked at the C390 is more expensive. I'd imagine its maintenance costs are higher too. To me it looks like a smaller C17.
The future of military transport aircraft looks bright with the introduction of the C-390 Millennium. Its potential to replace the C-130J signifies a new era in aviation technology.
What the C-130 will still do: double as a weapons platform for Harvest Hawk and Rapid Dragon. The C-130J has a range of 3300 km while the loaded C390 max range is 2100 km. The 130 will have a standoff capability to launch multiple cruise missiles at any Pacific adversary. It is a practical, cost-effective platform for the next 20 years. After that, the C-390 will be viable competitor.
The unveiling of the C-390 Millennium in 2019 marked a pivotal moment in military aviation. Embraer's dedication to innovation is evident in this state-of-the-art aircraft.
In Mexico, the C-390 came to visit the FAM air base to give demonstrations, apparently they are seeing if the replacement of the C-130 is optional before even choosing the C-130J or the C-390.
Depends on where you want to use them. A turbo prop plane can land on dirt and fly in hail, and keep going. Turbofan planes can't do that to the same degree. If a turbofan engine ingests hail, it's game over for them.
The comparison between the C-390 and the C-130J is fascinating. It's amazing how Embraer has managed to create such a versatile and powerful aircraft. The future of military aviation looks promising.
I'm an old fart, in my 70's. I have seen the C-130's grow into THE premiere versitol do most anything/anywhere aircraft. I'm not saying this latest 'replacement' for a still very capable aircraft (C-130), isn't up to the job, but infrastructure wise, it will turn into a very expensive trial that may or may not work out as 'planned'. Personally, the few times I flew in a C-130 I was up on the flt deck and enjoyed the hell out of it.Wow, my last ride in a 130 was 53 years ago...
It’s always interesting to see how new aircraft compete with established models. The C-390’s development shows that innovation in military aviation is far from over.
The 390 is a great aircraft, and should sell well, but not that much better than the C130, especially when you consider the 130 is a 3/4 century old design. In theory, turbo prop is superior than turbo fans in short fields, and the 130 have a bit more redundancy.
Sure, compare to a design that is already VERY outdated - the current C-130 model is the S, the J is something like 30 year old technology and design AND IS GETTING RETIRED (slowly) in favor of the S model.
Embraer's contention for two engines rather than four is a profit-margin argument. Military applications, inherently dangerous, embrace reliability. A two-engine config reduces redundancy twice over. Given a single engine failure, the 390 would likely be forced to jettison cargo. The 130 just radios ahead, "Sorry, we'll be a little late". The 130 can feather two props, for operation under light load/return leg conditions. I wouldn't go hunting hurricanes on two turbofans, vulnerable as they are in violent air to compressor stalls. Mount a pair of 30mm Gatlings on either side of the 390. The gun develops significant thrust. With one engine each side, mounted relatively inboard from the outboards on the 130, I would be highly leery of a C390 gunship.
Still would need two more engines, more range, I can go on. There are musts for the Air Force, two engines isn't it. The C27J was shot down as a complimentary aircrame for intertheater transportaion. Can't carry a full load on one engine with 2000 miles of open ocean, or nations you can't land at.

Embraer’s history in military aviation has clearly prepared them well for developing the C-390.
Viva Santos Dumont, pioneiro da aviação!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Amazing
What happened to American made?
When the last C-390 retires, the crew will ride home on a C-130Z.
When you can land and take off in your fancy jet from an aircraft carrier, we'll talk! Mic Drop!
With the history and development of Embraer's military jets, the C-390 looks like a worthy successor.
Apparently, they missed the reason why the C130 is still being used. Prop driven aircraft are inherently safer to operate on unimproved airfields. Less chance to damage the engines. We use C17s for heavier loads from improved fields. Why add another airframe?
US will never buy an foreign freighter due to US laws, but others countries will.
The Embraer C-390 looks like a serious competitor to the C-130J. Can’t wait to see it in action!
thanks for comment
If you want supplant the J model herky bird, it won't be for another DECADE, Fort Worth is booked another 10 years building them now. The Herky already does everything you mentioned.
thanks for your comment
Seeing Brazil invest so heavily in this aircraft shows their confidence in Embraer's capabilities.
yes
As a cargo mover the C-130 alphabet has one point that kept it any military thought. It can go just about everywhere. Not just dropping cargo it can land on improvised landing stripes. Moving in or out personal on abandoned air stripes or even smaller civilian runways to small for even small bizjets. It is why I asked about the Embraer take off and landing distance and what the landing gear can handle unpaved runway. While it's improved cargo carry if it can't cover these smaller an isolated locations. I do not see the C-130 being retired completely.
nice thanks for your sharing
Some Americans in the comments just felt the hit... Relax, you are still number one and will be for a long time. Despite all the issues and problems here, we Brazilians still have things to be proud of. A third-world country like ours, competing in technology with the most powerful nation in the world, is something we all should applaud, even you guys. A lot of the knowledge we have, we learned from you. And remember, Brazilians are your allies, not enemies.
i agree

Austria and the Netherlands have just signed the purchase of 9 units to be operated jointly between the two countries.
(Plus, you’d think Brazil, with its unique terrain, would KNOW that.)
Also: What about distance for takeoff and landing?
FWIW, my father-in-law was in charge of metals QA for the Herc at the Lockheed plant here in Marietta. There is a significant amount of 130 memorabilia around the house!
Sucks
If they chose Embraer C-390 to replace their C-130 Hercules, then it must be a great aircraft.

that's right! thanks for your feedback
Eexcelent video!!!
Glad you liked it!
I'm amazed by Embraer's innovation. The C-390 could indeed set new standards in the industry.
thanks for comment
The comparison between the C-390 and the C-130J is very insightful.
thanks
The Embraer C-390 is truly impressive! Can't wait to see how it stacks up against the C-130J in real-world operations.
yep
The Brazilian Air Force has already proven this to other military forces and the Portuguese Air Force is also doing this. In Brazil, its performance and savings in maintenance were so great that they accelerated the retirement of the C130 and ended up reducing the order for the 390 as it is so capable that fewer aircraft will be needed. There are nations begging to receive theirs as soon as possible due to the difficulty in operating their C130s. So much so that the first prototype that today flies as a laboratory in the Brazilian Air Force must be loaned until the customer starts receiving their 390.
It has already happened, both the Brazilian and Portuguese air forces use the C130 and C390, the comparison has always occurred.
Good job reading out the brochure.
Nice…but how do you keep dust/dirt out of the engines? There’s a pretty good reason why the 130 has props…
Embraer's innovation with the C-390 is exactly what the aviation industry needs to keep evolving.
Embraer has the best product in every single segment they enter.
true
Gulfstream G750, Airbus A220.
The C-390's versatility and modern design could make it a top choice for many air forces worldwide.
This sales video should be forwarded to the Pentagon procurement office. They run equipment acquisition for the largest purchasing group in the military market. Thanks for bringing the platform to public attention.

The C-390’s performance in rigorous testing is a testament to its reliability and capability.
C130..rolling down the strip..airborne daddy..gonna take a trip..❤AIRBORNE!
I will keep this question in mind. Thank you.

Excelente documentário sobre o KC 390 !!. Parabéns .... !!!!.
many thanks for your support
Isto nao é documentary, is just propaganda.😂😂😂 Like Tesla truck fanboys
The air-to-air refueling capability of the C-390 gives it a significant edge.
The investment and development behind the C-390 show Embraer’s commitment to innovation.
thanks so much for your feedback
There may be some applications where there is no substitute for 4 engines, but otherwise, the Embraer is a truly impressive aircraft!
thanks for feedback
The C-390’s design and features are impressive. This could be a real contender.
thanks so much for your comment
Sou brasileiro. Um dos poucos orgulhos que estamos tendo em nosso país hoje é a Embraer.
It’s great to see more competition in the military transport aircraft sector.
✈✈
We already tested a C-27 Spartan. It didn't pass the smell test...Lol!
Looking forward to seeing how the C-390 will be integrated into various military fleets around the world.
Thanks for your opinion!
Thanks for your comment. Useful knowledge.
The new C-390 features are pretty advanced. If it lives up to its promise, it might really shake up the dominance of the C-130J in the market.
The best C-390
sure
C-130 will always be King in it's class!
thanks for your feedback
The biggest problem is it's a jet which means it'll eat FOD. That's why the 130 has turboprops and hasn't been replaced thus far.
Can it back up like a C130?
I would like to see it land at Sila Creek, at Yakama Fireing Range DZ
@@johnhagemeyer8578 Here's your gigantic dust and FOD cloud. Keep breathing!
The unveiling of the C-390 Millennium in 2019 marked a pivotal moment in military aviation. Embraer's dedication to innovation is evident in this state-of-the-art aircraft.
How does this work for the Blue Angels?
In Mexico, the C-390 came to visit the FAM air base to give demonstrations, apparently they are seeing if the replacement of the C-130 is optional before even choosing the C-130J or the C-390.
Thanks for useful news!
Depends on where you want to use them. A turbo prop plane can land on dirt and fly in hail, and keep going. Turbofan planes can't do that to the same degree. If a turbofan engine ingests hail, it's game over for them.
This is Brazil, land of Indian warrior people! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

The comparison between the C-390 and the C-130J is fascinating. It's amazing how Embraer has managed to create such a versatile and powerful aircraft. The future of military aviation looks promising.
Embraer, Brasil ❤❤❤
I'm an old fart, in my 70's. I have seen the C-130's grow into THE premiere versitol do most anything/anywhere aircraft. I'm not saying this latest 'replacement' for a still very capable aircraft (C-130), isn't up to the job, but infrastructure wise, it will turn into a very expensive trial that may or may not work out as 'planned'. Personally, the few times I flew in a C-130 I was up on the flt deck and enjoyed the hell out of it.Wow, my last ride in a 130 was 53 years ago...

The JMSDF Kawasaki C-2 is a great platform although I doubt it’ll ever be sold to other nations.
Kc390 fantastic
Thanks for your comment❤
It’s always interesting to see how new aircraft compete with established models. The C-390’s development shows that innovation in military aviation is far from over.
The 390 is a great aircraft, and should sell well, but not that much better than the C130, especially when you consider the 130 is a 3/4 century old design. In theory, turbo prop is superior than turbo fans in short fields, and the 130 have a bit more redundancy.
✈️✈️
It’s interesting to see how Embraer is challenging the dominance of the C-130J.
thanks so much for your comment
Sure, compare to a design that is already VERY outdated - the current C-130 model is the S, the J is something like 30 year old technology and design AND IS GETTING RETIRED (slowly) in favor of the S model.
There is no way this supplants the C-130J
