      But let's not forget that a 1960s Deluxe Reverb is an Epic Amplifier.

      Brett Papa Great P90 tone and great playing by Rob.
      It would be interesting to hear these same guitars through a different amplifier(s).
      A vintage Deluxe Reverb is an incredible amp and very much contributed to the great tone of these instruments.
      Love your content Brett, Thank You.

    I bought my first P-90 guitar last October, a lefty Epi LP Special with two P-90's. Reminds me of my tele, I liked the tone so much that I just bought a Gibson LP Junior, an early 70th birthday present to myself. The single P-90 on the Junior sounds so good I can hardly put it down. Played thru a Marshall DSL1CR or a Swart Atomic Jr., my two favorite practice amps.

    I put Lollars humbuckers size p90s in a Les paul studio that sounded too dark for me with humbuckers. I changed the electronics to a 50s wiring with 500k pots in volumes and tones (not very ortodox with single coil pickups type). The result astonished me, what a great sounding guitar it turned it into!!! The 500k pots made it way more bright, even verging on tele territory, but what made the diference was the 50s wiring. I got what Mr. McNelley talks about and shows, backing down the tones and volume knobs you get that kinda sounds not related to a les Paul. My guitar now behaves as the Les Paul Special shown in the video. It´s a wonderful guitar, very pleasant to play.

      I use less is more. I like as few things in the way of my guitars signal as possible. I find that players sound better when they have learned to play with less. Too many guitar players rush into effects and dont figure out how to sound good without all that jazz.

    • @ctcards2636
      @ctcards2636 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently got a Travis Bean and it has 50s wiring with a treble bleed and there are SOOO many tones hidden in these 4 tone pots and 3 way switch. Its crazy. Ya dont need pedal to get so many of these tones and in reality most of these tones we chase was recorded with a small tube amp (Champ etc) and straight guitar. These effects were not apart of the original recording, they may seem like they make it easier to get that tone, but in reality it was all in the guitar and the players hands and the tubes reaction to their dynamics. Also some of these pedals color your tone and change the whole dynamics that are going on and actually are kinda a muffled way of getting that sound "easier" ? If that sounds right.

  • @christiantgolden

    It seems likely that those tonal changes in the beginning are likely way more due to the complete change in playing technique than rolling back the vol/tone. He was playing lighter, different picking angle, and picking way up toward the neck.
    I have an old 1963 harmony master that I threw a single coil gold foil surface mount pickup on. I can get very straty tones out if it just by using a similar technique.
    All that being said, rolling the tone and volume back can emphasize that tone a bit. Sweet playing, and sweet guitar.

    @AndreaAustoni ปีที่แล้ว +2

    At the beginning Rob is describing 50s wiring: the tone control is connected to the middle lug of the volume knob. The tone doesn't get dark when you roll back the volume but lowering the tone also lowers the volume a bit. Nothing to do with the pickups, you can do this to any guitar.

    50's P90's were very different than 60's P90's. Around '63-ish 50's P90's changed magnet wire from the brown purplish plain enamel wire, to the cheap very red poly wire. The steel parts also changed to harder carbon alloys, and stronger alnico magnets, so it was quite a big change. Those same changes happened to PAF's, which transitioned to poly wire Patent pickups. So old PAF's and old P90's were far superior in tones. Guitar players don't know this stuff. There was some harness changes, like pot values varied depending on what model. Like the single P90 LP Specials used .045uf tone caps, and 250K tone pot with 500K volume pot, to soften the brightness.

    Thanks, it's hard to find a useful review because no one articulates the different sounds one can get based on attack and playing with the dials. Now I know I can dump subpar fender and just play Les Pauls with P90s. I'd always hated muddy humbucker sounds and 30 lb guitars that are overpriced by a thousand dollars. The P90 is so attack- sensitive and Gibson's electronics are superior to Fender's - their tone knobs are for show; you can't really get much without tone turned up all the way.

    I think it's not so much the "50s wiring" as how the wiring was made, it's done differently today. Also a huge factor is the metals that the bridges and tail pieces were made out of back then. They allowed for a lot more resonance to trave and ring out through the wood, where as today's materials stifle it more. If you can find a vintage tail piece and bridge for your Les Paul it would improve the sound significantly. In 1983 8 bout a late 1950s 225 in a pawn shop with the original case for $350.00. It was in fantastic condition, but the case, not so much. 2 years later I sold it, like an IDIOT!!

    It is definitely the 50s wiring - when you turn down the tone, with the volume anywhere less than 10, the mids thin out a bit instead of the tone getting darker, so you get more clarity. It works with P90s or PAFs wonderfully. 🤟

      @@imannonymous7707 the 54 has Bumblebee capacitors. Means they're colored in a bee stripe 🐝, those are vos correct period electronics. What matters is how the tones roll off each pickup, where sweet spots are, gives you both Freddie King and Hubert Sumlin when dialed in just right. IMO certain guitars and amps match up better.

    • @patrickrosington1174
      @patrickrosington1174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@imannonymous7707 a capacitor is a capacitor is a capacitor. The only difference that matters is that you use the right one for the right situation. But in general a .022uf film cap from any brand will sound absolutely identical. If anyone says they tested it and can hear a difference. They are lying, OR capacitors. Resistors etc have tolerances. Depending on price you can have anywhere from a +/- 1% to +/- 20% with them. Same for potentiometers, resistors etc. So if you buy 100 .022uf caps and 100 500k pots. Many will be very different values. So of course they will sound difference. My les paul had shitty 250k pots from factory. Ranging from 217k to 300k. I bought a bunch of 5% tolerance pots and found 4 that were between 498-502. Then measured dozens of caps till I found one of the right value. And anyone who wants to argue this really doesn't know much. An electrical signal does not know nor care which cap its going through. A capacitor in your tone control is literally just sending part if your signal to ground. And thr value controls what part of the signal. I live near one of the greatest amp builders in America. I actually finally had him build me an amp this year. Incredible amp. Best I've ever heard in my life and I've played them all. I talked to him when I was younger and believed all the snake oil. And also I studied EE now and build amps and pedals. And this man will state. Non of it matters. Quality matters. Thats it. Just buy good parts and make sure its the value you need

    • @chipsterb4946

    • @chipsterb4946
      @chipsterb4946 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      /techno geek/ caps go down in volume over time. In a treble cut (tone), the lower the value of the cap, the higher the frequency where treble gets cuts. Part of Clapton’s “woman tone” supposedly was a lower value tone cap. So instead of cutting highs and upper mids, the tone control may be only cutting the too end. Pot values and wiring scheme are part of the puzzle too.
      Fun fact - carbon comp resistors often go up in value over time. I’ve blueprinted a couple of 64/65 Blackface Fenders and most of the resistors had drifted upward, some a LOT.

    In all honesty Iv been playing the sg junior with p90s and a Gibson les Paul with two p90s. They sound so round and fat with great dynamics that make my humbuckers sg sound like flat trash lol. The problem I realized is that that constant hum is ALWAYS there.
    A gate only is useful if you’re playing hard at all times but if you play soft with varying dynamics the gate mutes you’re playing as you play . And even on distorted palm muting the hiss is in the sound, it’s still there, it’s not just there when you quit playing, it’s there the whole time with a fair amount of distortion.
    It’s tough because I want to record with this sound and fatness yet I need to consider the fact that it may be impossible to get rid of the hiss at light playing with crunch going on. A gate kills the hiss but also subtle dynamics.
    Really unfortunate they can’t solve this problem with p90s, idk maybe there is a solution in th me mixing stage I haven’t stumbled upon. Cuz if so, I’m p90s all the way.

    Its weird but i dont practice all the time. I go a month without playing sometimes. When i get to a show it takes me about 1 song to get right back to where i was a month before and after the show my skills always seem to have gotten even better. When i play all the time i overthink stuff and i actually feel like i suffer from over exposure after 30 years of playing. So i understand Mr.Trucks doing this as well. I play in a Dead band and we tend to do 3 hour shows and the first song tends to be a long jam into the 1st song. By the time were done its been 10-12 mins and i can play just like i did before. Some folks cant do this, just like i cant play all the time. I go thru periods where i only practice at band practices and shows. I dont sit down at home and do much. I might pickup the guitar for 15 mins or so and just noodle some lead riffs and mess with some chords but thats it. Weird. Just like i learned lead guitar first and then rhythm so im kinda ass backwards it seems, but lead came so naturally to me. I had one lesson and that was learning David Bowie space oddity when i was like 7 or 8 ? haha. After that i just sat and learned to play lead to all the recordings I had and i saw on a Zep VHS i had a single scale i saw Page use and i took that and ran with it. But i am a dummy when it comes to playing book wise. I dont know the name of this or that etc. For me i just need to know its in A or this or that and i got it. Theres def limitations to how i learned and how i play, but im quite content where i am as a player these days.

    I love P90s. There is something about the mahogany slab with P90s that I love about the Special, even more than the more traditional maple-capped Les Pauls with the same P90s. The other thing that both of these guitars have is a wrap-around tailpiece. In my opinion, despite less than perfect intonation, the wraparound bridge adds something I really love. You can get a compensated replacement wraparound from several companies that pretty much fixes the intonation. It looks to me that both the Les Pauls here are sporting the Mojoaxe version. Great stuff, great tone!

      I loved your comment on the 50’s wiring. A lot of people forget that key aspect to the tone of vintage Gibsons with P90s. Another interesting fact is that most were wired with audio taper 500k pots for both volume and tone. I have heard that there is the odd 500k volume with a 250k tone, but that setup was primarily found in the ES guitars. I guess when the Les Paul wiring person was sick, the ES person just wired them up the way they knew how. Who knows really, all those guitars were one-offs due to lenient quality control.
