Fourth Of July is about the night his mother died. This song is basically their last conversation before she passes away.
For me, this is the saddest song ever. It literally crawls under your skin and completely destroys you with the sense of irreplaceable loss.

Love your reaction! Carrie was his mother, and Lowell his stepdad. Carrie was an absent mother who struggled with mental health issues and drug abuse. This album is about her death a few years prior, basically Sufjan coming to terms on how to grieve a mother he never really knew.

I think Carrie was his mom and Lowell Brams is his (former) stepdad. Him and Sufjan have a record label together so it seems like they're still close!
I listen to this album at least once a day. It's about the death of his mother, Carrie, who died in 2012 from lung cancer, which is why there's references to smoking, ash tray, etc. She had mental health issues and wasn't around much of his life, but he visited her during the summers in Oregon, which is what the song Eugune is speaking on. He never fully dealt with it until he made this album, and realizing the ways that her death has affected all his relationships. HIs step-father, Lowell has a major influence on him and even went on to be his manager, for the early part if not all of this musical career.
nothing comes close to how this album feels, it goes beyond deep and personal, its almost voyeuristic

One of my favorite albums ever. Easily my most listened. Depending on my mood every song has the potential to devastate me. Definitely get chills multiple times throughout regardless of my mood though

Sufjan’s work is sort of all over the place, but I LOVE it! He’s always full of surprises like the 5-disc box set of Christmas songs he put out one year 🤣
the whole album is about Sufjan's conflicted thoughts and grieving with his mother's passing.
she abandoned him and his brother and basically left them with very little contact until her passing, which soon before she contacted Sufjan to regain contact.
The Fourth of July was a representation of his mother's last conversation with him.
it tears you apart from the inside out and i love it. a perfect 10/10 album imo.
if you liked the production elements, Sufjan also has a whole lot of electronic experimental music! A lot of people were joking he was doin Charli xcx/hyperpop-ish production on his latest album (The Ascension) but he was doing that sort of heavy electronic experimental sound back in 2010 (Age of Adz) and even on his early albums back in 2004 (Enjoy Your Rabbit, A Sun Came)!! (the rest of his more acoustic or orchestrated albums are great too ofc)

How I interpret the lyric “there’s no shade in the shadow of the cross” is that there is no relaxation or relief as a result from the sufferings or the struggles of another (in this instance I guess how Jesus Christ was crucified)
He typically does multiple meanings so people can interpret how they please so I think it’s both
Till now the only song that has ever made me ugly cry or even drop a tear is Fourth of July. It hit me like a truck.

Loved watching your reaction!! I discovered Sufjan's music last year and have since worked my way through most of his catalogue. I absolutely love it!
I'm pretty sure 'No shade in the shadow of the cross' is about his drug addiction. He said in an interview once that he fell into addiction after his mother died. Since she struggled with addiction herself, it made him feel closer to her but also scared of turning into her. I'm summarising from memory so I hope I didn't get it too wrong...
He sings 'I'm chasing the dragon too far'. Chasing the dragon is slang for looking for your next high. It usually refers to smoking heroin.
And I think 'Drawn to the blood' is about being in an abusive relationship. 'The strength of his arm, my lover caught me off guard. What did I do to deserve this? For my prayer has always been love. With blood on my sleeve, Delilah, avenge my grief'
I definitely read his music as very queer. But who knows... I might be projecting.

It's just a really beautiful album about loss. this album really is my medicine and my dearest friend when i gone through my darkest moment of losing both parents.
