    As a Pharmacist how do you feel about this current field? Is it competitive, stressful, and saturated like many other people saying? Thank you for bringing up this interesting topic. I didn't go to college because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. Its shocking how many people are saying college these days are almost a waste of money. Statistics show the national student loan debt in the US is $1.6 trillion and that should tell you something is seriously terribly wrong. You are paying more for something less unless. People look down on me like I'm useless because I told them college is not the right environment for me. There are vocational schools and plenty of things that is more exciting than college. I've known some people that didn't graduate high school and they have a nice job by working there ass off from the bottom climbing to the top through promotion. This society is so ridiculous.

      Honestly I am in a similar boat. I went to college to be a pharmacist but I am not good enough to to do it. Organic killed me, I never failed a class before but that destroyed my entire opinion of myself at the time. I started thinking as to why I am here and who was the person I wanted to be. I looked into what I had, which was a very strong work ethic. I started to realize I wanted skills not stickers for my time in college. I am now trying to figure out how I can get more skills to achieve more in life and earn better pay.

      Defau/t I know other people who failed and struggled with ochem, or physics, etc. there’s always that one class or series that really hurts people. I wouldn’t let one class define your entire journey, maybe it was the professor, or the set up. You can always try again

    College and University are first and foremost a business. A place of higher learning is second to that. So most of the decisions they make or messages they propagate are based on the business model. They don't have your best interest at heart, they pretend to, so choose very wisely.

      Great point. It's one of the reasons why pharmacy is saturated. Everyone should ask themselves... why are they going to school and how does this help me get the lifestyle that I want?

    • @user-ot2nh8qb7d
      @user-ot2nh8qb7d 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KevinYeePharmD Absolutely. I finished my science degree in biology and biochemistry and went into pharmacy afterwards. During my time in the pharmacy program and working in said field I was not happy, to be quite frank I was miserable. Mind you this is in Canada, the saturation isn't quite the level of the US yet. But it's future, the direction, and prospects are what concerns me. And equally important, I just simply don't find fulfillment in the role.
      Hindsight is 20/20. I would have went about my decisions and execute on them differently knowing what I know now when it came to pursuing a post secondary education and potential career. But I am looking forward to a different career path now.

    Learning is attributed to self motivation and determination and colleges and universities just don't motivate people enough anymore. They're filled with bitter academics, who are more attached to the amount of phds and degrees they have and boasting about them than properly teaching students. What you learn, you learn yourself. A book and loads of practice is a more suitable way of learning in the field you're interested in. Medicine, dentistry, chemistry etc, have specialised institutions where you can learn and practice the skill and in a much better way than unis and colleges could ever provide.
    Elders in a family, push youngsters towards the belief that "No degree equals No success" and that couldn't be further from the truth. If you go to any Uni or college and find that it proves to be detrimental to your health and psyche, save your well-being and mental health and money, and drop out, or you'll risk doing more harm to yourself than good. A degree is just a rolled piece of paper with a red ribbon tied around it. It holds no sentimental value and it's better if it stayed that way.

    I'm in my late forties, and meandered through my bachelor's and grad. I eventually graduated with $8000 in college debt. I thought that was a lot, and to be fair it was a bit more than anyone else I knew, and probably adjusted for inflation it's $12000.
    However, with few exceptions the present generation graduates with at least $50k, and many much more than that.

    Kevin, i went to college to be a nurse, ended up failing, ended up being lost and confused and had to scrape from the bottom of the barrel just to get a job. I do have good skills, but certain jobs that don't even require having a college degree, will only hire people who do have a degree. So not for nothing but, this is a real mind fuck.

    • @KevinYeePharmD
      @KevinYeePharmD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about that experience with failing. I'm glad you gave it a shot, but IMO degrees aren't great indicators of a productive worker. The truth is when you're getting overwhelmed with applicants, a college degree is an easier objective way to filter out applicants.

    Good points, good points. But here is the thing collage is important for SOME jobs. Now hear me out ok. If you want to me photographer or a influencer or anything else really college may not be important but if you want to be a nurse or a doctor it is pretty much Necessary that you go to college. In my opinion having a dentist that did not go to college handle my teeth I would not be as comfortable as a dentist that did go to college

  • @jadenkorr9342
    @jadenkorr9342 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t want to say you are missing a point, but rather there’s something you are not considering. Whoever came up with the norm that college guarantees a stable income etc. that’s obviously not true. You have to study, do well and use the schools resources. Hence that’s the potential one can exploit, since you are paying up a huge tuition fee. You can’t go just go in, barely pass classes and expect everything to fall in place (not accusing that is you, just stating in general).
    I think a major factor depends on what you want with your life. If you want to be an engineer, CS, history, art or science or medicine etc. unfortunately you need the training and the investment. There’s too many people in this world, the only systematic way to distinguish ones merits over another in a quick way is by education (whether I agree with it is one thing, but stating an unfortunate reality). Yes, networking can arguably be a factor if not bigger but you need some foundation (ie, degree, skill, etc.) to stand on.
    I can attest to this from my own background, I’m in science. But the difference is, I want to be a scientist. I studied by butt off for classes, but also searched for research lab positions within the school, worked my tail off, tried to get my research published, and used my schools resource to the max to find network connections. But within the science field, it’s quite hierarchical and without a higher degree, no way I can go independent because even if I’m a genius, no university or company would ever hire me because I don’t have a higher degree to show that I’ve had the training to do so. I’m sure you can make the same relation for other professions etc.
    so for me, yes college was very worth it. But the difference was, I seized my opportunity and I knew what I wanted. Based on just this video, it appears that you completed pharmacy and it looks like pharmacy just didn’t peak your interest, hence understandably paying tuition was not worth it. But it also looks like you are suggesting that everyone should simply go into business instead of going to college based on how the video was edited.
    I just want to clarify that if one doesn’t know what they want, and don’t want to work hard and use the schools resources, then they probably shouldn’t be in college..
    Now we haven’t gone into universities raising tuition fees and financial aid cuts.. but that’s a whole another topic and consideration...
