Sadly it's a reality tho, people shouldn't expect to get a high paying job solely because they went to college. That's a fairy tale in this day and age.

I think gender studies are lit. Humanities are at it right now. After that degree you can work in HR, PR or social media and make good money. Also, it's interesting and essential knowledge. I'm in science and I'm having problems getting a job because right now everyone has MSc and there is good market only for people with PhD. It's additional few years of studies and a shitload of stress. After 5 years of biotech studies, I'm taking a gap year and learn freaking basics of graphic design, video editing and sewing... Maybe that will give me a decent job with a relatively small amount of stress.
That's why I'm glad I went to CC. Started knowing nothing of what I wanted, picked something, didn't like it, took a small break and got some experience, took a couple more classes, and finally picked something I really liked & know will have a guaranteed job, applied to university and start soon. Meanwhile everyone I know that graduated like 1-2 years ago are either unemployed or doing something that's not related to their degree.
Problem is (at least for me) it’s getting through your thick headed family. My mom kept believing that college would solve everything even though it’s completely bullshit. I hated college also wanted to take a break, but my family refused, so part-time status was the best option.
Dazz Dostal but they have to do something to test each student on the same thing. Bc lots of dumb kids can get straight A’s doing NOTHING at shitty highschools bc their teachers don’t give a shit while other kids bust their asses trying to get those grades at better high schools. There has to be some way to compare everyone on the same level.
@@cc-gx8hr I went to one of the better high school's in my state (Massachusetts), and got straight A's in my junior and senior years. It's not like I skated by to get those A's, but my SAT's weren't great (1120 superscored). That's not the type of (rushed) environment I do my best work in. I am now in my sophomore year of college and I have straight A's, so it's not that I'm a bad student, I'm just bad at taking standardized tests. I do agree that there should be some form of testing that checks students' abilities across the board, but it should not be weighed as heavily as it is.
My parents are in denial about what public schooling, the SATs and college has become. They’re still convinced that things are just like they were when they went to college
Or, go to a school where you qualify for more scholarships, wouldn't pay $80k to begin with, study something valuable, and get a job making much more than that.

@Random dude Money doesn't fall from the sky. The U.S. isn't Nordic countries. We don't have the same economy/income like they do and our government has to pay for other things like welfare and social security.
@Random dude We spend 60% of our budget on social security, medicare, medicaid, and welfare. Military is 15%. Nordic countries don't pay for most of their defense. The U.S. pays. Nordic countries don't pay for drug research. The U.S. pays. That alone, by percentage, frees up your countries to spend more per capita on healthcare needs. The U.S. has 350 million people with different and more unhealthy needs.
I'm in Washington and am faced with the same troubles. I can't make enough money working part time to feed myself, keep my car running, and rent a place to live. I've resorted to living in my car, and can only hope that college or a greater opportunity allows me to rise above.
There's a lot of problems with school/college. The biggest problems are grades: memorizing information for multiple subjects is just stressful and doesn't prove if you are intelligent or not. When you think about the end goal is to be an adult with one job, focused on one subject matter, no grades to show if your smart, but observation of your capabilities...then you realize the concept of going to school for 12 years plus college is just to make kids and young adults feel weak, depressed, and confused.
This right here. I’m a Biotechnology Major but my degree requires me to take humanities and bullshit electives. Like, how is this going to help me in the future?
I agree Kaitlyn, from the 1st grade till right before college, all students are expected to pass some sort of standardized test so most schools only focus their teachings on passing those tests. Going to school is not about learning anymore but about memorizing enough information to pass an exam. Nobody is taught economics, barely taught a second language, barely taught geography, nobody is taught how to be a decent human being, or to even speak in public for presentations (some teachers go out of their way to teach that if you’re lucky enough). There’s so much that schools should teach and they even hold some students back because they are “too advanced” for their age.
This is a really true point of view on the issue. We are debating this topic right now over at uDebate, and would love to hear what you have to say. th-cam.com/video/hGeh8NK2J0Q/w-d-xo.html
100%. My major was accounting. You really don't need a prestigious college for the fundamentals of accounting, just a good college GPA. Graduated with no debt and landed a multinational auditing job straight out. It makes up for the years people stuck their noses up at me for attending a low grade institution!
Atoh its all about experience. I’m going into the manufacturing/machining field and companies find experience more valuable than where you went to school at.
This. I took six classes in two semesters and a certification exam and became a certified medical coder. I can make $50k a year. People scoff at CC but it’s so much cheaper for just as good of an education!
Never have I been more depressed then in college. You miss one day either it being for an emergency or for work which was paying for the classes and your screwed.
Have missed several days and have had no problems. As long as you let your professor know you have a job with certain hours or unpredictable hours they will understand
I got advice from my teacher a while ago and he said this when I didn’t know what to do or get in college; “Go to community college first to find what you want first and or discover what you really want and research the best way to get it, after that, and if your really sure, then go to college” Haven’t gone to college yet but I keep that advice in my mind
Thank you for sharing this. I'm a junior in high school and with the SAT/ACT I've been struggling so much with whether I want to go to a community or 4 year college. I guess I'm glad that I'm questioning this now and not while in college...
From someone who made the choice to go to a CC despite having a scholarship(20% due to my 2220 SAT score when it was out of 2400) to a 4 year uni, go straight to the 4 year. Community college seems more like an extension of high school where the professors and staff assume that you are there because you messed up in high school. Classes are 10x harder to get because primary registration goes to the Veterans and Older Gens first (plus the campuses are overpopulated since they don't reject anyone). When I made the decision to go to CC, it was because despite having the scholarship to the Uni, I would spend a total amount less by doing 2 years in the community college and paying the full amount for the remaining two at the same Uni. But in reality, it is going to take me 4 years to get the first 2 years of my college done before I can transfer because transferable courses are the first to fill up, and regular students have the last pick for classes. So rather than saving me the couple grand for not going there immediately, I am going to be nearly 100k down because I will be starting my career 2 years later than I would have at the university.
@@juniper7611 you can go 2 years to a community college and then transfer for two more years into a University to get your bachelors. I pay $1500 per semester for classes instead of $25k-$50k in a big University.
@Charlie Keiner I think the biggest cure to the student loan problem is to make the minimum age to take a student loan 21. That way, high school graduates who can't afford college out of high school will be forced to work for at least 3 years while simultaneously figuring themselves out.
Right? Where do you find a woman like that? It’s really sad how the risk/reward of going to college for a career is so low nowadays for most cases. Colleges need to figure out how to lower their prices
Once the Government stops giving every single penny of student tuition in loans to the college is the day colleges will stop charging so much. When you have guaranteed payment in a system where college is generally accepted as "essential" you meet demand with supply, and meet supply with money. Same reason why it costs $2 to buy a bottle of water instead of just getting a glass from the faucet or fountain. Two totally different things, same philosophy.
You could literally buy textbooks yourself and just read, do all of the assignments and questions in the text book, and pass yourself off as "properly educated with months or years of study" but a job doesn't like that. College is really just a $22,000 line of text that looks good on a resume. The moment we all start looking at it that way, the moment college becomes non-essential. Everyone always preaches "you don't need college to be successful" but if you really want a job that isn't a minimum wage shit hole you almost more than likely need some form of college. Every single position that's not retail, a food joint, cleaning, or all of the above will more than likely list "Associates or Bachelors required or highly preferred." so that is why a lot of successful people who didn't do college got successful... they ventured in entrepreneurship. They had to go on their own to find work, to get work, to make money. Jobs in the field or in a trade everyone says you don't need experience for those jobs, but you look at hiring posts for jobs like that and they either want one or two years previous experience, some sort of certification, or related experience.
College is a fucking scam, the traditional "go to college" approach we were all taught was also a scam, but it's all accidental. No one knew it would be like that. Going to college, marrying a girl, and having a white picket fence with a dog named Skippy and a three bedroom two bathroom house was what we are slated for. No longer is the case, and once more people truly wake up to that, the more likely we'll be better off. If you live in a town or a small city, it's going to be so hard to find a job that doesn't absolutely require a degree. Small town folk and employers are extreme traditionalists who love the fact you have an education on your resume, but don't believe in you if you don't have a line of text that says you went to college while you are still nearly 90% capable of doing the job once you get training. Urban folk and progressive employers are a lot more lenient on that. Traditionalist small town employers are the reason why Steve Jobs started a business from his garage. The reason why Warren Buffet started in his garage. The reason Jiffy Lube started out as just a small-town mechanic looking to make a quick buck changing people's oil. Look at what it did for them. I know they didn't grow up in small towns, but the same traditional "college degree required" employers still existed because it was the 70's.
I think maybe that was Ethan trying to help the guy feel more comfortable answering the question because some people hate telling people test scores. But yeah he needs to stop talking over people.

I’m going for a BA but I still have to take lab courses! Working for two majors would be so much easier if they didn’t require classes that have nothing to do with our degree! It’s just a waste of time.
Why is it even used. I had good grades, took 6 AP classes and had As and Bs. Did shit on the SAT cuz I didn't think I needed to study that much and got rejected 7 out of 8 schools I applied.
I didnt do so well on the science potion of the ACT and now Im an Astronomy major in college and have gotten As in almost all my science courses. So if the ACT was such a good predictor of college success then I wouldnt have done well. There are people in my classes who have gotten 30+ on their ACT yet they do poor in these classes. Standardized testing proves absolutely nothing other than you did good on some random and generic test.
Worked full time all 4 years of college, lived at home all 4 years, went to community college for my first two years then commuted to a state school for two years, received several small scholarships, and still graduated with $27,000 in debt. It’s basically impossible to pay your way through college
There are ways to do it. I’m halfway through and I’m on track to graduate debt free, without help from my parents. I do a sales job over the summer and make enough to cover tuition and still live off the rest until next summer rolls around.
Wow that's crazy, where I am if you are smart community college pays you to go and then transfer to a larger public school with the paid money + working all 4 yrs and it works out basically .... You'll be flat broke afterwards tho
No the government regulations are the problem. The real solution is to significantly cut government subsidized student loans or remove them completely, then tuition will plummet drastically since nobody will be able to afford to go. I agree that a high interest rate is really scummy though to place on 18 year olds likely pressured to go by their parents in the first place, however the higher ups who set it up in the first place would be very hard to change. Its like croney capitalism where the administrators are part of a business deal with the government where the colleges receive free loans for their students to attend and in turn the interest rate makes the government a tremendous return on investment. They do everything in their power to protect their anti-student system as long as they can.
Yeah, it's actually the government fault. If you want "everyone to go to college," then you get an inflated demand which means colleges will jack their prices up to meet it. The same shit happened with the housing bubble. You want "everyone to have a house" guess what? I'll just do some predatory lending and screw them over cuz it's government subsidized.
@@pc2555 Umm. Do you think demand will drop because it becomes unaffordable? In Korea, right? According to Kor government statistics, 67% of people go to college or uni in 2019. Americans seems to have like 30 to 40 percent, although I can't find a creditable source. And, As far as I know, Korean subsidy regarding university or college is not as extensive as America's. There are some programs here and there, but, still. So... What I'm saying is, I'm not sure if making Uni or College even more unaffordable would be a good idea. It'll just make the families suffer even more struggling to pay for higher education without the policy achieving desired outcome. I don't know. I'm no expert but That's what I think.
@@dkelrk1 I can't really speak on how the university system works in Korea but just the fact that 67% of people CAN go to college in 2019 without any government loans shows its a very different situation. In the US and Canada (where I live) its basically unfeasible for someone out of high school to afford college unless their parents are wealthy and pay their tuition for them or they have a moderate income job to pay for their classes or save for years to attend (but with no skills or experience out of high school thats very rare). Also, higher education is not mandatory to survive and get a decent job so while it is important its not a necessity that needs to be available to everyone(it is a privilege, not a right). Not sure on the lower ends of tuition but for good degrees students can easily rack up $100,000+ in debt and I've heard some people who have accumulated over a million dollars in student loan debt (which is just poor decision making at that point but it shows you how expensive it gets). The idea of removing government subsidy has to do with competition. Universities will have to step their game up and make it much more student friendly; affordable and high quality or they go bankrupt. While people can't jump right into college after high school, the tuition will be so much lower that you can afford your expenses while working a blue collar job which was possible 40 years ago.
I married a girl who had $70k in student debt (I believe it became "ours" upon marriage). Like this host, we decided to pay it off immediately. We should have it done within 15-18 months. It was just a decision to focus on that and not cars, electronics, travel, or going out to dinner, etc. It will be nice to get out of debt. We are excited. Our advice to anyone is to avoid debt if possible. Try to cash flow whatever you buy. It'll be good in the end. Expensive cars (and their monthly payments) and a sea of student loan debt will quickly depress you. Getting out of it has been uplifting.

In the state of Wisconsin the state made it illegal to raise tuition. And now there's a ton of students who go there from out of state because it's increasingly cheaper year after year.
Even though college isn’t needed for a successful career, some jobs like it if you just have a bachelors degree alone no matter what it’s in just saying.
I wouldn't even go as high as "like it". I'd go as low as "require it". I think 80% of the places I sent my resume to after college stated openly "minimum bachelor's required", and this is like what you need for anything in my field. So basically you're fucked from the get go without it. There's no chance you'll get called lol.
Even with a bachelor's many employers want to pay you the least they can, it's ridiculous. Sometimes you'll get paid max $15 per hour with a bachelor's, which is what a good server makes, maybe even a little more and that's with out a degree 😶. . .
excessmaterial Fair point, ‘require it’ sounds more appropriate, but lemme add that even with jobs that don’t require it, out of a sea of applicants having a bachelors makes you stick out of the bunch of GED and high school diplomas. With a certification combined with your bachelors you can look very favorable.

I'm sorry to say it, but a biology degree will not lead to great job opportunities. If I were you I'd switch to engineering ASAP (a worthwhile field like mechanical, electrical, chemical or civil.) Even if it takes longer, you'll at least graduate with a worthwhile degree, and you'll easily be able to pay back your debt. Biology will make you a debt slave the rest of your life unless you're in the 95th percentile of grades or something like that. Also, another thing. If you're trying to pay your way entirely through college, you might actually regret it if you graduate with a high paying job. The program in a nutshell is that if you get your Associates from the College you get guarantee acceptance to the University with ALL your credits tranfering over. So, really I'm going to a feeder school and not paying a dime for it while I'm saving up working as an assembler for a future engineering firm.
Got a full ride to a top 10 uni and want to die, considered transferring very strongly. I get 3 hours of sleep a night, in class from 9am to 10pm, forget to eat and even when I remember, the university sells food at 6x the normal cost (which I can’t afford). People are rude and obnoxious, very out of touch of reality in terms of being consumed with social status and Greek life.
I get you. In the same situation. But since it's a full ride, just ride the wave and get the stupid piece of paper and NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. 90% of the value I got from my university is actually from the people I met and not what I learned. Case in point, I met the CEO of a large company through his childhood friend's daughter. I am currently doing a paid internship at said CEO's company.
If you don't mind me asking, what college are you in? I do know some top colleges have grade inflation and make it relatively easy to pass the class, however some other top colleges (like UCB) have grade DEFLATION, making the class like hell.

Especially since I want to go into business or CS, college is pretty worth it for me.
College life was so much better, a fantasy for better words. I hate real life... I have a degree and no job. Living with my parents, fat, depressed, applying to minimum wage jobs like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Amazon warehouse with no luck... BTW... Are y'all hiring???
I'm planning on studying at a community college where I can get a free ride. Teachers often pressure you into going to a 4 year or higher, but it's honestly so unrealistic at this point.
I pushed off university and am paying off community college as I go until I have all of my credits and an associates that will get me a good IT job. Of course, I will pursue a bachelors down the road when I am more financially capable with experience. There's no rush in going to these reputational universities right away.
college in the US is so crazy... student loans, highest prices for college in the world, barely getting a job anyways, as if college isn't stressful without all those things. Meanwhile college in Sweden is free for all the people of the Swedish nation, and people therefore don't give a shit about starting college when you're 18. I really think US people should try to get their education abroad, it's so much more affordable, it will send a message to whomever it might concern, and you'll grow so much from living in a place with a different culture than you're used to.
I think the worst thing about school is that the importance of tests is WAY too high. Life is a marathon not a sprint, people may struggle with health issues preventing them from performing well on important tests. We should value the overall performance of a student MUCH more than their test results.
Also, circumstances, like imagine you got into an accident, got hospitalized for months (not be able to redo it due to time),then you go back to ,realise that you failed, cause results. Well, thats kinda messed up imho
I got a 1280 as well! It's actually a pretty good score. College is a meme now. It just means debt and not necessarily a job unless you pick a STEM or perhaps Hospitality college. Pick a trade. Learn to code or to weld. Both can pay well.
I never did this calculation before, but I think it might help someone determine if getting a degree from a specific college is worth it. 1. Look at what degree you're trying to get 2. See what people with that degree get paid after college 3. If wage is in years divide by 2080 hours to get approximate hourly wage. 4.(Calculate college cost + expenses) x (1+interest in decimal)^(years expected to pay off) this will give you (total cost). 4. Divide (total cost) by (years expected to pay off x 2080) this will give you cost per hour 5. Subtract cost per hour from approximate hourly wage to get your actual wage while paying for college debt. 6. If this actual wage is unsatisfactory then consider changing university, degree, or going a different route entirely.
Another extremely real and honest video from one of my favorite channels. I couldn't agree more about everything that was said about college in the US.
Nolan Dieselberg all depends, jobs where you are higher in the ranks demand a degree no matter the work experience. Obviously its situational but generally higher ranks require it.
I believe it's both maturity as well as how a person processes information. Some people can process information and gain skills while in a classroom while others are better at it through "on the job" type training. Colleges have become too standardized and structured in the written test and classroom performance... I'm all for trade schools and community colleges where people can learn marketable skills and obtain a paying job after completing the courses.
I think college is fine when you don't do bs majors and do a major with a job in mind. For example: pre med, pre law, engineering... If you are just going for like some random ass degree it is pointless
@BadBen what that I am gay? ahaha of course someone has to pay for te education in the end it is not free. But thanks to taxes the one paying for the education are not hte students who do not have any money and as everybody pays those taxes the price is divided between everybody. This way we do not face the same stupid issues related to loans that unfortunatly the american students have to deal with
@BadBen also, if you could not think of this by yourself you should maybe consider yourself as stupid and start to save money for some education. Even if it is expensive in your country some people like you really need some help to discover how to think properly
I never fully understood the entire SAT obsession. You only need those for four year colleges, and if you're going into it immediately after high school or no post-high school education. I never took the SAT. I went to a community college for 1 1/2 years, got good grades there and all of my remedial shit done, and then transferred with zero issues for the rest of my bachelors. Saves you a lot of money and headache honestly.
As the rest of the comment section is saying, college is worth it depending on what you're going for. As someone who went to college with a BS and a trade school for IT, college doesn't prepare you for the real world. As well as associates degrees, BAs and BSs don't hold as much value as they used to. My 7 month trade school helped me more than 5 years at college to prep/look/get a job. My opinion, college is overrated, know what you want to do before you throw your money at it. Experience the real world for a bit then see if you want to do it. No shame not going to college immediately after HS.
just because you get accepted to a college does not mean that you should go to that college you need to understand what is within your budget. you could have attending a calstate or gone to community for a little bit.
@unusual coconut not when you transfer lol. Start at the CC pay 600 or free if the government helps then transfer. And even then you can get government help.
college is free where i'm from. actually we get paid a little bit of money every 4 months for it. and i'm here complaining about how hard i have it studying science in technology
There has to be a catch Maybe its extremely hard to get in to college or you have to pay the goverment with years of service . But yeah nothing is free
I live in Australia, I got my bachelors in 2017 and I still can't find a job. I did a psychology degree, don't do this unless you know you will do your Masters 100%. I'm warning any future students.
Try to find just one job... work there for a few years then get a masters of business and you can starting making some REAL money. You can get into any post grad business program with work experience and a decent to good gpa and with most undergraduate degrees (even psychology). But yes, minoring in psych would've probably been a better option. But hey. At least you got a college degree, you'll find a job soon just don't be impatient and be proactive. OR try law school? A lot more options than you think, plus, again, you have a degree.
@@thekanone6694 Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and give me advise I really appreciate it. At the moment I really just want to start working but I will look into getting a masters degree maybe later on if I still can't get a job.
You'll more than likely do your masters and find yourself in the same situation you are now. How do you know after doing a masters it will be any better?
I was taking all the honors courses in high school, I graduated with a 4.2 GPA, I went to community college in senior year through a program at my highschool, got a job at dominos so i could pay for all the classes up front. After I graduated I had to find an apartment and pay rent and I couldn't afford college anymore. The thought of being in debt for the rest of my life scared me. But what I learned in the years my friends spent in college is how to communicate, how to budget, and how to build relationships with potential employers and clients. After highschool I worked at a gas station where I met an employer for a receptionist at a hair salon, I worked there for a couple of years and one of our clients owned a Veterinary hospital, I gave him my resume and said if he ever needed full time work to call me (my whole life I always wanted to work with animals, so I thought it was worth a shot). A couple of months later he did and now I am being trained as a veterinary technician. All without a college degree. And my friends are all just now graduating college, moving back in with their parents and landing jobs at Wawa. And people are still giving me shit for not going to college.
Briana Slaubaugh you have to take into account when he took it tho. Because in the past the SAT was a lot harder than it is now, so his score would probably be in a greater percentile back then.
I don't know what the tests now are like but when I did (back in 2000) there was huge pressure on time, on some sections I had to leave many blank because I didn't have time to finish. They tell you to manage your time but you can't really do that effectively if you've never done the test before. Also, you need a lot of time just to read the instructions for each section and figure out what they want from you- that alone would massively help your test score back then.
@Couch Professional Yes, I absolutely take everything he says as fact and it is slowly but surely ruining my brain and my life. I need help and I think you should be the one to lend me a hand now that we're buddies.
Furthermore, getting a "useless degree" isn't game-over if you go somewhere you can afford and find valuable work/internship opportunities b/w semesters. I majored in English (because I'd rather do well at what I love than perform shoddily in STEM courses I hate) and what mattered in subsequent job interviews was the work experience that actually reflected my value as an employee. I ended up working for a startup incubator/accelerator despite never taking business or econ classes in college. (I did, however, learn how to read and write like an adult. A dying art.)
Im from San José which is the most expensive place to live nationally and renting a room not including utilities is $900. I work 40 hours a week and have to go to school and idk what I’m gonna do once I’m done with junior college cause I’m lucky to be living with my parents rn.
I got a pretty decent 15$ an hour job after high school while going to community college after high school. I was making more then my older brother who got a job with a bachelors degree.
im in college for engineering, its worth it (basically needed to get hired) but also its not because the profs are trash and i have to teach myself a lot. It also kind of depends on your college and if it has good profs .
dark justice same, I’m premed and my organic chemistry professor rambles in class and rushes lecture leaving students more confused than when they went in. Then after a few khan academy videos and textbook readings it makes more sense. Good luck to you bro, I hope you make it there one day.
I would disagree with the "basically needed to get hired" argument. I have a relative who is now an engineering project manager for an airline and left high school with no grades. Your degree will not determine any success, only you will.
For competitive majors, it is not about teaching you the material, it is about weeding the people out that take the time to teach it to themselves to truly understand it. I'm currently in med school and I attended maybe 2 of my O-Chem lectures, but instead went over the powerpoints at home and made my own study guides for the tests. Once you get to your upperdivs, you will see that the people actually care about you passing then.

Some schools don’t require sat scores anymore because there is not a correlation between scores and how well you do in school. Sat tests how well you take a test.
Katame - same... trade school is so underrated. My brother went to a trade school for three year to become an electrician. He now makes $30k a month working as an aerial lineman. He has no debt from school.
@slight o hand that's exactly right. And although the trades have the potential to pay really well, MOST people aren't interested in that physical blue-collar type of lifestyle. That's part of the reason they do pay so well... simple supply and demand.
Life is a rollercoaster, we just don’t totally know ourselves and it’s ok! I have a degree in engineering, didn’t like the opportunities and had a mental breakdown due to anxiety and 9 to 5 lifestyle, followed by a huge existential crisis. For now I’m a truck driver, I live my life without any stress, I’ve matured a lot and thought about life. I pay my bills and learned about value of things, materialistic as well as real things ( friends, TIME). In a couple of months I’ll reach my childhood friend in Chile to play as a drummer in is band. We’re all gonna die guys, just enjoy ✌️ That being said, college is a scam lol
I'm 23 and had that mental breakdown/existential crisis at 19 while I was in med school. Switched majors - didn't like it. Suicidal thoughts every single day. Took me a while (and lots of therapy) to figure out what I wanted to do and put my mind and heart into it. It's been rough but I've finally found some sort of fulfillment after four years of misery.
ironically engineers today are trying to find ways to automate the truck driving industry. Im about to graduate engineering and fearful I will feel the same way though
Except they will be making a great deal of income, have job security forever, and if they work for a public workplace, they will have debt forgiveness in 10 years just by making the minimum payments. Sounds like your friends are winning to me.
I've always felt if you're not a STEM(science, tech, engineering, math) major then college isn't all that worth it, like will anyone care if I majored in communications?
If you aren’t going in to the military yeah stick with STEM. They have these bs degrees so that more people go and learn something that’s pretty much useless.
I'm listening to this segment while I'm sitting in my University class, as an undecided major, literally going broke as I write. Doesn't feel good, man...
I’m an 18 year old senior about to graduate, I’m trying to decide between community college for two years and then transfer, or just go to public college for 4 years. Most people make fun of community college in my town, as well as trash most public state schools. Not only is the pressure insane due to my peers, but the more I find out about college the more I realize how insane it is. My parents are living examples of not using their degrees.
lyss p OMG take it from someone who is almost 9 years older than you. GO TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE. People made fun of me for going and these same people ended up single baby mamas and strippers. Losers. Community College is cheaper and no one cares how you got to university
I’m currently going to school for Computer Science (programming). I’m working in the field as an entry level software developer while in school (between 20-40 hours a week depending on my school workload) and make $20 an hour. I’m able to start paying towards my student loans while still in school. Granted, I am one of the top Software Engineers in my class, but colleges usefulness totally depends on what you go to school for. If you go for a useless degree, you’re going to have poor results. If you go for something actually useful (STEM) and work your ass off and have a passion for the field then college is a good choice. Edit: I should make a note, I also have a summer internship locked down making $30 an hour with a $3000 signing bonus. I am on track to make between 70k - 100k a year when I graduate. It TOTALLY depends what you go to school for.
I'm going to college for the same thing... If I find a job within that field, contingent on the state I live in, do you know what's the average salary software developers in general make?
Painguin :D Lucky you, I wish I could be better at any math than writing and I still can’t remember some math problems and the reason for that is because I wasn’t trained right? But how can you manage math easily?

There's a lot of problems with school/college. The biggest problems are grades: memorizing information for multiple subjects is just stressful and doesn't prove if you are intelligent or not. When you think about the end goal is to be an adult with one job, focused on one subject matter, no grades to show if your smart, but observation of your capabilities...then you realize the concept of going to school for 12 years plus college is just to make kids and young adults feel weak, depressed, and confused.

....
...they’re right to be wary.

“Go to community college first to find what you want first and or discover what you really want and research the best way to get it, after that, and if your really sure, then go to college”
Haven’t gone to college yet but I keep that advice in my mind

@@TTGOz The main problem is that the cost of producing degrees is way behind the total costs to attain that degree. One would assume.

The government needs to regulate the interest rates on student debt. 11% is predatory and exploitive.
I'll just do some predatory lending and screw them over cuz it's government subsidized.
but but but, millennial are in debt since they are lazy ...

The answer to your question is it depends on what you're going for. If you're going to college to be an engineer or doctor or a teacher of some sort and yes it's worth it. If you're going to college to be a photographer or to get a degree in gender studies or because that's just what you do after you graduate high school then no.
Don't get me wrong, being debt free is great, but a few $10k in loans will not be a severe hinderance, and you'll thank yourself later for being less stressed.

I think the worst thing about school is that the importance of tests is WAY too high.
Life is a marathon not a sprint, people may struggle with health issues preventing them from performing well on important tests.
We should value the overall performance of a student MUCH more than their test results.
Sam Brown i agree but the thing is tests make up most of the students’ performance
Also, circumstances, like imagine you got into an accident, got hospitalized for months (not be able to redo it due to time),then you go back to ,realise that you failed, cause results.

I got a 1280 as well! It's actually a pretty good score. College is a meme now. It just means debt and not necessarily a job unless you pick a STEM or perhaps Hospitality college. Pick a trade. Learn to code or to weld. Both can pay well.
I graduated from the school of hard knocks and got a degree in street pharmacology
Katame I thought your friends were super accomplished and shit
I never did this calculation before, but I think it might help someone determine if getting a degree from a specific college is worth it.
1. Look at what degree you're trying to get
2. See what people with that degree get paid after college
3. If wage is in years divide by 2080 hours to get approximate hourly wage.
4.(Calculate college cost + expenses) x (1+interest in decimal)^(years expected to pay off) this will give you (total cost).
4. Divide (total cost) by (years expected to pay off x 2080) this will give you cost per hour
5. Subtract cost per hour from approximate hourly wage to get your actual wage while paying for college debt.
6. If this actual wage is unsatisfactory then consider changing university, degree, or going a different route entirely.
Even then, it's still a gamble. That is assuming you'll get a job in that field.
Another extremely real and honest video from one of my favorite channels. I couldn't agree more about everything that was said about college in the US.
I think work experience in the field of work you want to do is more important than what college you attend
Yes, success is not really determined by the college you went to but more how much you actually learn and how you apply it
Nolan Dieselberg all depends, jobs where you are higher in the ranks demand a degree no matter the work experience. Obviously its situational but generally higher ranks require it.

I’m thinking I want to go into trades but I don’t know what exactly
Alot of people forget about refrigeration. There's a demand and currently pays damn well

just because you get accepted to a college does not mean that you should go to that college you need to understand what is within your budget. you could have attending a calstate or gone to community for a little bit.
@unusual coconut not when you transfer lol. Start at the CC pay 600 or free if the government helps then transfer. And even then you can get government help.
@unusual coconut plus the acceptance rate for students is higher for transfer.
college is free where i'm from. actually we get paid a little bit of money every 4 months for it. and i'm here complaining about how hard i have it studying science in technology

Unless there is NO possibility of going into a masters program that is... Regardless, you'll still find something, i'm sure.
@@thekanone6694 Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and give me advise I really appreciate it. At the moment I really just want to start working but I will look into getting a masters degree maybe later on if I still can't get a job.
I'll be getting into psychology this year, will be first getting a bachelor's degree, but will start master's immediately.
The answer is no.
I've been in college for 4.5 years and I'm not gonna use my degree in life. Shoulda dropped out to do youtube
Pecan what degree are you getting?
Of course college is worth it if you don’t choose a worthless degree...
engineers are struggling to find work
@@lumos581 lol
@Jswirv why not aerospace
Jswirv and biochemical. People really don’t understand that so many majors aren’t putting the same output. Yes this includes stem
@jswirv you clearly don’t have an engineering degree because computer science isn’t an engineering degree at all
If Ethan got a 1280/1600 that actually puts him around the 89th percentile which is really good.
@Couch Professional He says 1600 was a perfect score when he took it.
@Couch Professional Yes, I absolutely take everything he says as fact and it is slowly but surely ruining my brain and my life. I need help and I think you should be the one to lend me a hand now that we're buddies.
@Couch Professional Okay buddy :)
What's an incubator or accelerator?

Im from San José which is the most expensive place to live nationally and renting a room not including utilities is $900. I work 40 hours a week and have to go to school and idk what I’m gonna do once I’m done with junior college cause I’m lucky to be living with my parents rn.

I got a pretty decent 15$ an hour job after high school while going to community college after high school. I was making more then my older brother who got a job with a bachelors degree.
Ian Onrust what kind of job was it that was 15 an hour?
Houri A in n outs starting pay is at like $13.50 so it’s easy to find a high paying job with a lack of skills, at least in california
@hail j It's because of how California is in its entirety, from where people live, to jobs in the state, and its politics
hail j Texas the same way
iHandOutFat L’s wtf no it isn’t 😂
im in college for engineering, its worth it (basically needed to get hired) but also its not because the profs are trash and i have to teach myself a lot.
@@withwilk7473 wow, and everyone knows that outliers determine trends, so this anecdote clearly means that you can easily get an engineering job without an engineering degree /s
college is like alchohol, you dont need it to have fun (successful) but it can make it funner (help you in getting a job) , it can also be a great experience or huge regret
Some schools don’t require sat scores anymore because there is not a correlation between scores and how well you do in school. Sat tests how well you take a test.

honestly you can just become a corrupt government official and earn bank. Just pretend to care about something and get donations
My friends who went to vocational school are in no debt and make like 75k a year
While my fancy college cousins have no jobs and are in 80k+ debt
Katame - same... trade school is so underrated. My brother went to a trade school for three year to become an electrician. He now makes $30k a month working as an aerial lineman. He has no debt from school.
@@bucketadee $30k a month?! that's $360K a year assuming he works 12 months per year ! Fuck college I guess XD
slight o hand I refuse to work that shit
@slight o hand that's exactly right. And although the trades have the potential to pay really well, MOST people aren't interested in that physical blue-collar type of lifestyle. That's part of the reason they do pay so well... simple supply and demand.
Bikboi Griefer or he’s lying. It’s like everyone in the comments that when to trade school make 100k +
We’re all gonna die guys, just enjoy ✌️
That being said, college is a scam lol
Interesting. Best of luck to you, man!
@@eurekamreum5458 It's good you've gotten better, man. I hope it stays that way.
very cool Samy. Congrats!
ironically engineers today are trying to find ways to automate the truck driving industry. Im about to graduate engineering and fearful I will feel the same way though
I was friends with 2 pharmacists. Right out of school they had over half a million in debt.
That’s true, but they did graduate with a big shovel ( large income) to start attacking that debt.
They'll never be out of a job though
Except they will be making a great deal of income, have job security forever, and if they work for a public workplace, they will have debt forgiveness in 10 years just by making the minimum payments. Sounds like your friends are winning to me.
I've always felt if you're not a STEM(science, tech, engineering, math) major then college isn't all that worth it, like will anyone care if I majored in communications?
If you aren’t going in to the military yeah stick with STEM. They have these bs degrees so that more people go and learn something that’s pretty much useless.
Law school takes literally any undergrad degree. I did history, and got into a top 6 law school.
Well for finance you need a good school aswell
Does programming fall under tech
The journalistic field is growing, communication's is an effective way of getting into such a field.
I'm listening to this segment while I'm sitting in my University class, as an undecided major, literally going broke as I write. Doesn't feel good, man...
Claire BubbleTea you’ll be ok
Claire BubbleTea damn that sucks
I hate college so much GRRRRR
College is probably why Ethan's hair is grey.
Depends on your location, and seniority but as of 2017 the median wage was around 100k a year.
I killed the writing but math killed me
Painguin :D Lucky you, I wish I could be better at any math than writing and I still can’t remember some math problems and the reason for that is because I wasn’t trained right? But how can you manage math easily?
That's the subject i think most people struggle with. I was the same, got A's all the time in English but Math just kicked my ass.
Oh fuck the math part
I'm 50, you only need math for your money.

simple 5.0 I would hate my life if I went into the trades. People don’t account for the fact that money isn’t everything
TheDragoonFactor why would you hate it? A close friend of mine husband used to be a supervisor for a big company with a degree in finance, had a mental breakdown because of the stress from the job, now he is a truck driver making way more money and is at peace
Lana's Daydream different preferences. Happy for your friend though. Sounds like they found something they really enjoy.
TheDragoonFactor what’s wrong with a trade
Austin nothing’s wrong with a trade it’s just that if you’re gonna only do it for money, it might not go well for you.
The best comedians always have a degree in creative writing.
Lots of places are starting to get rid of the SAT/ACT as it doesn't really accurately tell what you're capable of nor guarantee you're gonna even show up to class
