  • SMALL TOWNS OF AUSTRALIA: a series where I act 'stuck up' in places which aren't Sydney. Glen Davis is a mostly abandoned town in the scenic Capertee Valley, 80kms north of Lithgow. Watch me (poorly) summarise its history and ramble about how weird and unsettling the town really is.

The tour of the ruins of the shale oil refinery is definitely worthwhile. There is much history with Glen Davis and nearby Newnes in the Wolgan Valley. The film The Chain Reaction starring Steve Bisley was made on location in the town. It is a little known Australian movie available on DVD.

My uncle owned the hotel from about 1961 till the late 90s . My cousins and I used to go up there a lot and ride horses and go hiking . Lots a great memories. The place does have a feel about it though

My parents lived in Glen Davis for quite a number of years just after WW2.
Dad used to ride his old motorbike to Singleton where he was stationed in the Army and go home on weekends.
My Mum would tell me stories of the weird noises she'd hear during the night and my brother and sister were never allowed to play in the streets by themselves.

I camped there in a park , visited the factory (its "officially" closed, but if you pay the house near the gate "$20" then they "officially" open a tour... as the sign suggests.
However if you are Safety mindfull you will be fine.
No creepy vibe or feelings felt. If anything the peace and quiet set in the valley was relaxing and refreshing. Not everyone needs to have a thirst for the concrete jungle (City).
I recomend anyone who is interested to give this place a visit. Just expect to be very isolated, which is nothing to be spooked out about.

It's basically an abandoned or ghost town set in a really beautiful huge valley, "creepy" I don't think so, found it a peaceful place.

I now live in Sydney, but recently returned to by childhood town for a day visit. Felt like the arse end of the world.
There was nobody around, nothing happening, and just had a huge nothingness about it. The house I grew up in now looks like a tip with piles of old cars everywhere, rusty sheets of corrugated iron and rubbish strown everywhere. Houses that were new when I left were now sun faded and in disrepair.
Country towns always seem nice when thinking about them from Sydney. But when you're there.........you see the reality.
There's a reason country towns are small:- nobody wants to live in them!
Until there's are national program to make these places appealing and bigger, nothing will change.

Ooft this hurt a little too watch. I mean I completely agree, objectively the Valley is a bit spooky. But I'm a bird watcher, and the Valley and around Glen Davis has an abundance of birdlife and its one of the best places in Australia for birding so I'm more of the opinion that it's an absolute wonderland.

It's not even that far from Sydney. Try some dustbowl in western NSW..........that would be spooky!
