      @@golflessons iv been following you for the past 10 years, this video for me summs up all the knowledge you have shared with us. The sternul notch in front of the ball and the right cheek behind the ball was the missing piece of the puzzle i needed. Im currently 3 handicaper and iv dedicated a lot of my time over your videos. You should stress this information again and again in all your videos, you have no idea how this changed my golf game. Thanks again shawn !

    The 5 wood would have the notch directly over the ball or to the back half of the ball; but with the brace against the left side; the driver would have the notch a couple of inches behind to more depending on the height of the tee; again, making sure the upper body is properly braced against the forward side; Thanks for the question! shawn

    Best video ever! Thank you so much, Shawn! I've taken lessons from multiple PGA instructors, watched in-numerous videos on youtube to get consistent swing and make solid contact with the ball every time. Nothing comes close to this. Tried this out in the driving range today. 60/65 shots were solid. Thank you again

    Shawn, for years I have paid pros to teach me to hit down on the ball... all they said was "hit down on it"... no technique at all. After watching this video, I went to the range and instantly began hitting down on the ball. Showed this to a guy yesterday with contact problems and he hit the first shot 125 perfectly and it went into the hole! Not a hole in one, as it was his 3rd shot on the hole, but one unbelievable shot. He to is now a believer. I am on my way to your vids now.

    Thanks for the comment! The feet being used as reference points is a stepping stone to the use of rhythm to auto lock one's self with the natural speed of the putt at hand; I will look into doing a video in the near future; I have a lot on the plate at the moment...:) Shawn

    Finished work today strait to the range, took out my PW and couldn't hit the first 10 balls at all no divots Nothing!! Watched this video took a divot with every shot and literally didn't want to go home for my dinner because I've never enjoyed hitting the golf ball so much in my life! The key for me was the position of the head i just cannot believe it!! I put a 7 iron off the deck to 185 yards 6ft from the hole! I'm itching to get to the range again 2moz then hit the 18 holes at the weekend and smash it! THANKS SHAWN YOUR A LEGEND!!!!

    Ever since I have switched to Shawn's swing, the problem I have with the sweeping clubs is that I tend to either slide or lose my tilt in my swing. It is totally mental and not a problem with Shawn's method. To quote Yoda, you must unlearn what you have learned.
    I noticed that the further apart my feet are the more like I am to straiten the tilt. If you keep that angle the drives will go strait.
    A hybrid should be hit like a 5 iron. You hit ball first

    Holy Cow!... Yes!.. The sternum!... NOT the left shoulder!... You make it so clear! I'd been taught that the left shoulder indicated the bottom of the swing, but after seeing this I see how wrong that is, for reasons you made embarrassingly obvious by you!..
    You answered YEARS worth of questions in that short video... Thank you!
    How did you NOT make Golf Channel's best teaching professionals?... Why do they have Martin Hall and Brendal Chamblee (Michael Breed is okay) on the air, but not YOU!... I don't get it!... I spend an inordinate amount of my
    time reading about golf and watching ALL the TH-cam instructors (as my girlfriend would attest to) and have to say YOU are the best!... I watch them all, but YOU are better!... Thanks for being here for all of us... Thanks for sharing your CONSIDERABLE wisdom of golf (play on your website there!). I wish you great success, but please, never leave us!...

      Another way to look at it for you KA, because this video has been so helpful to so many people, is in the video of mine with the title "perfect contact every time shawn clement" part 1-2 and when you add trajectory to the mix, then you get even more refinements as to the low point and how deep or shallow it is. Keep going deeper! I have a ton of support for this!

      Pause at 5:42 or slow mo any swing and pause it at the bottom, unfortunately it IS the left shoulder. It is in a perfect line just as all pro players are at the bottom of their arc (right after the ball strike, which should be a few inches behind the bottom of the arc). It is just his hokey stance and swing lean and motion etc that is making it an illusion of the sternum. So much of an illusion that even he believes it is the bottom of his arc lol

    @badabingg42 The very best thing to do is get my new 5 disc dvd series; not to try and sell here but the reason I did this was to put everything into priority in 5 minute segments so that no important aspects of the set up are missing; then you use you tube as a means to update yourself and experience other analogies to solidify the method; when you have the complete picture, you can determine what suits you best;

    Yes, but you want to treat this as a stepping stone to the understanding of the contact; you want to get ready to swing to your target and feel that when you do release out there, that the ball-grass-ground is in the way; see "sledge hammer golf shawn clement" and see the part where I intentionally top, thin and flush the contact with the ball.

    Dear Shawn, thank you for your prompt response.
    So the sternal notch is just a guideline and everyone has to minor adjust to find the right position because of different body builds. Correct me if my understanding is wrong. I will certainly go along this line from here. Thank you!
    Last point, if one tee up and play a fairway wood, should one follow the concept of playing a driver in catching the ball on the rise? Or hitting the ball first?
    Your are really the best golf teacher in U tube and perhaps in the world!
    A very big thank you!

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, correct; it is especially the PERCEPTION that everyone has that gets in the way; see "tilt acid test shawn clement" as a good video too;
      As for fairway woods, they are designed for collecting from the ground and therefore when you use a tee, you onlu use the knob of the tee, maybe an 1/8 th of an inch; so along the ground and slightly down and through; see the 1 iron I hit in the "increase smash factor and compression shawn clement" video

    Dear Shawn, I have improved my game since I've followed your instructions.
    I have one very important point begging for your clarification. When you said setting the sternal notch in front of the ball, am I right in assuming what you mean is the line from the sternal notch through the belt buckle( which is tilted) pointing to the point in front of the ball? Because surely the perpendicular line from the sternal notch to the ground is clearly behing the ball.
    Very grateful for your clarification because this is the essential point in your setup.
    Thank you so much!
    David from HK.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David! Here is how you want to go about it: play the ball way too far forward after lining up and feel that you would need to lunge forward to get the ball to go where you want it and then play the ball way too far back and feel you would need to reach back to make the ball go in the direction you want; then find the position that would allow you to catch the ball first and feel that there would be no manipulation necessary to get the ball to start in the direction you want to go. Everyone's interpretation of body positions is different and worthless if there is no action to target involved. Our premium series of off season training is amazing to polish this; if you cannot access through youtube, the "Wisdom in Golf 2.1" series is what you would want! Shawn

    Shawn,
    Great video. I am a beginning golfer trying to improve my swing with irons. Recently, I went from very little wrist hinge to trying to hinge wrists and my swing is out of control with thin shots and shots to the right. I control the ball best when I have very little wrist hinge but can't hit the ball with any power. I am a former college tennis player (right handed) so I'm not sure if that's an issue with my right hand. Anyway, love your videos. Great information!

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yesssss on the out of control part!! It just means that your grip is way too weak and the club face is not closed enough at address!!! See "weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement" as well as "farm hammer shawn clement" and "grip and compression shawn clement". Next, go with "fencing sword for power shawn clement" and "loaded arms shawn clement" and then "how arms and club release shawn clement". In tennis, you have a specific grip for top spin vs cut spin, first serve vs second serve. In golf, you have a grip and club face relationship for fade and one for draw. Then you have the very same pronated release as in tennis. Don't you hinge and fully release in tennis? Lack of accuracy there? I think not! Get my video series asap to get the whole story, you will love it!!

    Hi shawn great video it has helped me improve my iron shots, i'm getting more distance and hitting the ball
    A lot straighter .The only qusetion i have is you say to turn your left cheek behind the ball was just wondering what
    Is the reason for this please .

    @dillingerexcape87 Tough to talk about in 500 characters or less; but yes, I did read it in the early 90's and things like point of contact and point of separation came in handy in explaining what "through the ball" means to my students; but a lot of material is very much overkill such as hitters and swingers (You do both in a rhythmic swing when using your instincts, which is who should be in the driver's seat :)); You should pose the question on my forum and we can have a nice discussion!

    Dear Shawn,
    It's really a wonderful tip from this video .
    You've made the swing look so simple with excellent contact every time.
    Can I ask how's your weight shifting during this swing, starting with 60% on left foot?
    It looks as if you have maintained most of your weight on the left foot all through, or is there any weight shift at all?
    Please enlighten! Thanks!
    David

      @dcpw10 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. So the weight shift is only natural and sequential to the backswing and downswing. So we don't have to deliberately shift our weight during the action. Is that correct?
      Thanks!
      David

    Well since you created the mess on the face of my irons, I was hoping that you would volunteer as a forcaddie... ;)
    Seriously, my contant has improved immensely, the only issue has been spinning 9 irons off the green into bunkers.
    The big thing for me has been focusing on the falling of the arms unit. I do not even think of the club face. I just trust that my brain will predict the future and deliver the compressed feeling subconsciously.

    There are some teachers promoting a right side golf swing (right hand players). I'm sure you've heard of it, but for those who haven't, a lot of the teachers are stating one must use the right hand and arm to control the club. Some even talk about loading your scalpulas. Personally, I've played my best golf focussing on the target and taking my hands out the swing, allowing the heavy arm club unit to swing towards the target/ picture I've created in my mind. What are your thoughts on this?

  • @bluejfk

    This video led to the worst thing that has ever happened to me on the golf course. I used to be a picker. Now I take the nice divot. Sure I am making great contact but now I have to clean my iron and wedge heads after every shot. Before as a picker all I would have to do is wipe the face with my thumb to remove the grass clippings. This is so annoying. If I wanted to do that much cleaning I would have applied for work at Merry Maids.
    AYE-YA-YAYE!!!

    Great vid! I had a lesson the other week because I keep topping shots, even off the tee! my head was staying in the centre instead of keeping it to the right, and not having my weight on my left side and that at the top of my swing my left shoulder should be in line with the ball. But I'm still topping? Maybe I'm coming out of the swing too early?

    I am going to try out all of this ,chin ahead of ball , and weight moved to left ( as shown), my sternum slightly ahead of the ball,.with all clubs and revert by the weekend. Looks interesting ..and doable with practice of course need to see how this works out for me. this may end up messing up my 15 but10 is the way to go .....add the divots i have never ever got.
    thks Shawn,
    Best

    Mr. Clement,
    I get that in theory the bottom of the swing is under the sternum and it makes sense how you explain it. But, since the hands are at different heights from the ground wouldn't this move the bottom of the arc? I don't see having the hands on two different areas of the club and at two different heights from the ground still equates the bottom of the arc being under the sternum. If you stand straight up and hold the golf club straight out in front of you, parallel to the ground, using your regular golf grip and slowly swing it around you will feel the bottom isn't in the center but under the left shoulder for a right handed golf. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for the advice and for the great videos!

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter! The sternal notch is the 3 dimensional imaginary point that the arm-club unit swings around, for an even better visual and understanding, please see "contact and direction shawn clement" and "tilted spiral part 4 shawn clement" another one of my favourites is called "battering ram shawn clement" and as you will see, the sternal notch tends to stay centered when you are performing the task of cutting down a tree or squeezing a ball into a door frame. In the case of the battering ram, the bottom of the arc will look and feel like it is under the door frame. It only APPEARS as if is under the left shoulder because the body at this point is in the process of clearing out of the way which means the left side is retracting as the right side is coming through. The sternal notch is still right where it started as everything is gliding around it from underneath...fun stuff this golf!

      @deathlust666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn Clement Thanks for the response! I just stood up against a wall and swing a club parallel to the ground and you're absolutely right, the bottom of the arc is under the notch. Thanks again!

    Hi Shawn. First, thanks for your great videos. In some of your other videos, you do not appear to use this particular set up (braced against left side). Is there a reason for that? Second, I don't recall ever seeing a PGA Tour pro set up this way. Can you explain why they set up differently? Lastly, does this set up ensure a flat left wrist at impact and does it help avoid flipping the hands?
    Thanks and looking forward to your feedback.

    Good day, I have had spasmodic success with your methods. But, more success with your methods than any instructor I have ever had in person. I am struggling creating a divot. My irons strike behind the ball or come through thin. I"m all over the place. Should a line from my sternal notch be perpendicular to my low point after I am braced and tilted or do I consider the tilt?
