  • Hey everybody, and welcome! Today we’re gonna try and bake off old messed up images from a tumbler and re-sub with new images. But not only a tumbler. We’re gonna rebake a glass can, a frosted glass can, a coffee mug, and a Walmart 25 ounce bamboo lid frosted glass tumbler! Basically, we’re gonna try and save a bunch of screw-ups!
    This process is done in a dedicated convection oven. Dedicated, meaning, don’t use an oven you would use for food! If you don’t have one, try a thrift store. A convection oven is best, as the air flows around inside the oven, so there’s no need to rotate the tumbler.
    Here’s the oven I use: amzn.to/3mhfSid
    If you’re looking for some unique designs, be sure to check out my digital design website. www.industrial...
    Here are the links to the products I used to make this video, as well as products I use for sublimation. Some are affiliate links, meaning I may get a small commission, but you pay no additional costs. It’s a great (and easy) way to help support this channel:

    Roy, this was fantastic. I have only just started sublimating tumblers therefore as part of my learning curve I have had a few stuff ups along the way. I stumbled upon your TH-cam channel yesterday and found them very good and I like the way you get the information across without going on with a lot of BS.

    I use a convection oven for my glass cans. When I have some that I need to strip the sun ink off. I put a shrink wrap on it and bake for about 6-7 minutes. The shrink wrap soaks up the image pretty well. I normally do 2 rounds of that. It works wonderfully. I have t tried it on the tumblers though.

    Have noticed the dark at the bottom of the tumblers I don't know if it's burnt does that come off and does any of the fumes get down in the cup I saw somebody cover up the top of their cup so the fumes wouldn't get inside

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I’ll need to start by saying you should never take scientific advice from me. (Mrs. Koenig, my high school science teacher would very quickly confirm this.) I don’t cover the tops when I bake off, as I don’t personally believe there’s an issue. First, deposition (or desublimation) is the process of turning a gas back into a solid, so there is a possibility of the gas reforming into a solid inside the tumbler. I’m not sure that’s a bad thing, as once the gas has turned into a solid, it’s safe. Right?! I mean, I could lick the outside of my tumbler all day long and nothing would happen to me. (Let’s assume I’ve never done that.) I do wash out my tumblers after they’ve been burned off, but my very unscientific thought is that it’s okay. Besides, if you’re sublimating in an oven, there is still a percentage of gas going into the oven and thus into and around the tumbler. That said, if you have ANY issue, by all means, cover it! (With what, I don’t know!) As far as the dark at the bottom, it’s probably not coming off! Thanks for watching!

    I love this. Thank you so much for sharing. I noticed some the tumblers are kind of dark on the bottom, are they burnt? You also mentioned something about one of them leaving a tape mark and you'd get that out, tape marks can be removed from sublimated cups and tumblers?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can burn the bottom if you’re not careful. My tumbler bottoms were okay, but I had adhesive residue that I forgot to remove before I started! It was hard to get off. And I had the coffee mug bottom get dark. If the marks are vague, sometimes you can remove them with Turtle Wax Scratch & Swirl. I’ll be trying this in an upcoming video!

    Did it burn on the bottom of the tumblers? What is that on the last ones bottom?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to go back and look at the video, because I knew none of them burnt on the bottom (except the glass one and the mug a little bit)! I had previously put a rubber bottom on that tumbler, and when I removed the rubber bottom, some of the adhesive didn’t come off, but I didn’t notice. That adhesive browned up. I was able to remove it with a little GooGone. The learning on my part? Remove all the adhesive BEFORE I rebake a tumbler! Thanks for watching!

    Can I use a regular oven? Or does it need to be a one of these smaller ovens

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Hippie Chick Creations! (I absolutely love that name!) You can, but you can’t use it to cook food in. The best is a small countertop convection oven. If you’re looking, try a thrift store. And while convection is better, a regular toaster will probably work, you’ll just need to manually turn it once or twice during the bake. Again, don’t ever use an oven you’d cook your food in! The process of sublimation releases gases that you do not want in your food! Thanks for watching!

    Question, does the tumbler still keep ice for a long time like it normally does?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, Debbie! The seal between the walls keeps air vacuum sealed, so rebaking it’s shouldn’t effect that seal or the integrity of the tumbler!

    What if you just resubmitted with the save image? If the intention is to sell that design, once you make a mistake, you baked it in the oven to cause the image to fade, & lighten up, and then you lined up the same image with the faded one.

    I am new to sublimation. I have ruined a couple of mugs and tumblers. I was able to remove almost all of the ink from the mugs. I have a sublimation oven and set the oven to 400 degrees for 45 minutes. One of the mugs looks brand new and the other has a faint ink stain on it. My question is will the ink stay on the cups and tumblers without recoating them with a sublimation coating? Thank you

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. I’m not sure why one retained the ink. There will always be some ink left, hence the need to find a dark, dark design to cover it with! Once you’ve baked as much of the ink off as you can, you can resub without the need to add more sublimation coating. I’m not sure how many times you can do it, but from my experience, it definitely works one time! Thanks for watching!

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No more so than creating a new one in an oven, although it is in there longer. I’ve heard a few people say you should cover the opening so the gas can’t get inside. If you think you should, by all means, do so. I personally don’t think it’s an issue, as I believe it’s completely safe once it gets back below 350 degrees. But do what makes you feel most comfortable! Thanks for watching!

    I have a stupid question. I'm new at this & I did something stupid. I used my heat gloves to brab my tumbler out of the oven which I guess I shouldn't of done as they left marks on my rebaked tumbler. I also turned my tumbler 1/2 way as it way laying down & I heard I needed to do so if it didn't stand up. So my question is how do I remove the heat glove marks that have been left on the tumbler? I got a lot off but not all. I feel so stupid

    • @jamialowenthal7166
      @jamialowenthal7166 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think these heat gloves aren't the best. They are the black with pink dots type. I think I need to invest in some new ones that don't melt when grabing a hot tumbler.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, don’t feel bad, you’d laugh at all the mistakes I’ve made! I’m not 100% sure what you’re talking about, but it sounds like the heat from the rebaked tumbler caused some of the material to transfer from the gloves to the tumbler. It may have glued itself into the substrate. If you’ve removed everything by hand and there’s still some there, I would try baking it a little while longer to see if you can get it off of the tumbler when it’s hot. But maybe use some different gloves! Thanks so much for watching!

      You’re not going to get all the ink off, you just want to get enough off to try and add a darker design to cover it. If you haven’t yet, I’d make sure your oven is at the correct temp. Do you have an internal thermometer? At that point, you can increase the time and/or temp to get some of that ink off. Best of luck, and thanks for watching!

    What about the gasses getting inside the tumbler when baking off?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      While I’m not a chemist, my belief is, the stainless steel inside is a hard metal surface and can easily be cleaned. What you want to stay away from is food in the same oven. The reason behind that is that food can absorb any lingering gases left in the oven, but a hard stainless steel surface cannot. But that’s just my best guess. If you’re concerned, don’t rebake, or at least get an opinion from someone qualified to answer chemical/gas related questions! Thanks for watching!

      Hey, Rita! You NEVER want to sublimate in an oven you use for food! I’m thinking a press may work, but in my opinion, it would be way too much on the press just for saving one substrate. I would go to a local thrift shop and see if you can get a convection or toaster oven for a few dollars. (If it’s not convection, you’ll just need to rotate it often.) thanks for watching!

    Is it the design that makes the seam on the product ?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Angela. I’m not 100% sure what the question is, but I’m gonna take a stab! The seam is made from the two sides of the image touching each other. If the image is designed to be seamless and the tumbler is wrapped perfectly, you won’t see a seam. If the design isn’t made to be seamless, or if the wrap isn’t spot on, you can see a seam. And some people (me!) often build a seam into the design. I hope that answers your question! Thanks so much for watching!

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว

      The goal is to not get them in the first place, and I do that by using very light pressure and making sure the tumblers are completely cured. (There’s no way to test that, but if you have light pressure and you’re getting them, you need to bake the other tumblers in that box for 30 seconds to a minute without anything on them to make sure they’re completely cured. Let them cool back down, then wrap as normal. If you do get them, you can use a car wax to lightly buff and reduce the severity. Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl is the one I’ve used. It’s not a complete remover, but it helps!

    For images with a lot of black in them, how do you keep the sub paper from sticking to the tumbler? Mine is sticking badly which ruins the finish of the tumbler. The other colors press beautifully. I run an Epson F570, Epson General Purpose transfer paper with Epson sub ink.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without knowing any more, my first two thoughts would be this. First, make sure your ink is bone-dry on the paper. I try to print a day or so before pressing. (I’ve pressed seconds after printing too, but I try to wait at least a little while, especially on dark designs with large solid dark areas.) Secondly, you may want to try prebaking the tumbler if you’re gonna do a really dark image and you’re still having an issue. Just long enough to make sure the finish is baked into the tumbler. (Two to five minutes in an oven or 30 seconds to a minute in a press.) Let it cool back down before wrapping. Thanks for watching!

I rarely use warping for an image, and the only thing I use Smart Objects for is to make the 3d mock-ups.) Photoshop Elements is a one time price. I am a beginner at sublimation. I have sublimated four tumblers so far using a tumbler press at 360 for 60 minutes. They all have a faded color look, the black is brown, turquoise is green, and so forth. I’m wandering if you can suggest what I may doing wrong. My tumbler press is brand new, not sure if that should have anything to do with it. Also I have a regular size oven that is a convection oven as well, could I rebake the mess ups in it? Or would that make my oven not safe for cooking food in ?

And do NOT use an oven for sublimation that you use to eat! Sublimation releases gases, and you don’t want any residual gas in your pot pie! th-cam.com/video/yOqxHEZgPwk/w-d-xo.html

      Well, the Walmart frosted one was messed up all around, so it was trash! With the exception of two, I didn’t have issues with the bottoms. Would there be a way to remove the remainder ink like rubbing alcohol or acetone or would that remove the special coating? Could you in theory turn any mug into a sublimation mug by dipping it in polycrylic? Just some beginner questions i kind of have.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Great questions! I don’t know for sure, but I would bet removing the remaining ink with a harsh chemical would also remove the sublimation coating. And theoretically, you could coat anything with the right polycrylic coating. I tend to shy away from that, as I sell my product, and I want to make sure it’s 100% sublimatable. I also can’t beat the prices for already finished tumblers. I may use a special coating on an upcoming video, but it will be for canvas fabric. Thanks for watching!

      @INDUSTRIAL fringe I just found you. I really don't watch much how to sublimation they just don't explain things like you. Your definitely an amazingly helpful channel. Do you have a video how you measure your cups and how you cut them. Before wrapping? I made a quick glance but only seen wrapping and editing your images

    Wonderful video. I have an upside down golf one as well and a glass can I don’t like so I’ll give it a try. I thought I would have to epoxy which I’m slowing down on. Thank you.

      Good luck! I was surprised how well the clear glass can worked! Thanks for watching!
