    As stated in the video, this is an overview of all the US releases of the mainline Star Wars films on VHS. Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith was never released here on VHS in America. There is a PAL version released in limited qualities in places like the UK. Those will not work on an NTSC VCR. There is also a South Korean VHS release of Revenge of the Sith that actually is NTSC. But once again, here in America we never got an official release of Revenge of the Sith on VHS.

      I was pretty annoyed that Revenge of the Sith wasn't released on VHS. I had all the other movies on VHS and the boxes all matched perfectly. VHS was still pretty mainstream in 2005 when Revenge of the Sith was released on home media, so it's not like he would have had to make a special "legacy edition" or something.

      Not the same thing, but they took the concept art from ROTJ of Luke in Jabbas palace and used it in a new episode of boba fett. The only difference is they took out Luke being in it because in-universe it’s a painting hung up in Jabbas palace, meant to honor him, so of course they wouldn’t put the dude who would come blow up and kill him lol
      The painting is in the scene where the Vespas are chasing the mayor around Mos eisley and one of the vesper drivers runs through it

    So at some point in the mid 90's they did a tv broadcast of Star Wars for three nights, hosted by Carrie Fisher. This was the first time I had watched the movies in full, it was a nightly thing with me and my dad. We recorded them to vhs and still have them. Need to see how much of the Carrie Fisher stuff is still there.

      Empire didn’t get hit too hard by the special editions. The only one that I think truly suffered was ROTJ. ANH was passable, even if there’s a couple ugly cgi creatures, the Jabba scene, and I’ve seen 1 or 2 people argue about who shot first

    My first exposure to Star Wars was the 1995 release of the original trilogy on VHS at blockbuster. I walked through the aisles at 6 years old and saw these three films. Something about Vader caught my attention so I just grabbed be and my dad rented it for me. And after watching it that night I became a fanatic. The next week I rented empire strikes back and the following week I rented return of the Jedi. I didn’t purchase the 1995 VHS versions unfortunately. It wasn’t until the special edition versions came out when I got original trilogy on VHS (gold version). I got use to the special edition ones so I accepted them as they were.

    The first release of A New Hope on VHS was in fact the Rental copy seen in this video. It later got a retail release that same year. Then in 1983, it got reissued with the CBS/Fox Video logo on the box instead of "20th Century Fox Video" (which merged with CBS Video Enterprises the year prior, and created said venture), but the contents were exactly the same. A year later in 1984, it got yet another reissue, this time in a standard slipcase (rather than the "drawer case"), to match The Empire Strikes Back which came out that year on VHS. In 1986, around the time Return of the Jedi came to VHS, they released a version of A New Hope that looks just like the 1984 copy, but has a new remastered soundtrack restoring C3PO's missing tractor beam line. The way to tell the difference between a 1984 copy and a 1986 copy is to see if the red "Hi-Fi Stereo" triangle says "digitally mastered" or not.

    The black and white VHS sleeves mirrored Lukes conflict between the dark and light, ultimately siding on the light. Same as his black outfit in return, that late in the movie is show to have a white inner lining. Luke was shrouded by the darkness until that moment, and his strength was enough to turn Vader back to the light. That imagery was the best Star Wars has done in terms of "show and don't tell" movie making, something that is long lost in movies today.

    The Phantom Menace VHS has the theatrical cut of the film while the DVD and all subsequent releases use an extended cut of the film. The changes are an extension of the pod race’s second lap-which added one of anakin’s engines getting uncoupled from the pod, and a hovertaxi scene on coruscant.

    YES! I was waiting for the massive Episode I box that I got for Christmas 1999. My filmstrip appeared to be during a fight somewhere around the Naboo palace, with Qui-Gon in the foreground and some laser impact sparking behind him. It really was a fantastic presentation. My first exposure was the CBS/FOX 80s versions, then bought the remastered originals. The summer of 1997 was all about me saving up while mowing lawns with my father to buy the Widescreen Edition of the SE trilogy. My favorite collection remains the 1995 remastered originals with the mini-docs beforehand that said how they'd fixed some effects and sounds

    People owned VCRs in the early 80s. Although, due to the very high price (around $1500 in today’s dollars), a lot of people got their VCRs rent-to-own. And stores frequently sold rental copies of movies after a few months when they needed to make shelf space. It was also perfectly legal since the store had already paid Fox for that copy, so they could do whatever they wanted with it.

    Something interesting about episode 1, like the original trilogy George couldn't keep his hands outbof the editing room and the DVD release actually has an additional bit in the podrace scene not found in the theatrical or VHS version. Then for the bluray he removed muppet yoda and replaced him with the CGI yoda from episode 2 and 3.
    The VHS is the only way to watch episode 1 as it was originally presented, and that's why I own 7 copies of it on VHS, because like the OT fans, I refuse to watch the special edition of episode 1.

    There actually WAS a box set version in 1990, and it looked similar to the 1992 one.
    The tapes themselves in 1992 (the ones you have) had the titles repositioned on the covers, the character profiles were removed, the back artwork was different, and the "CBS/Fox Video" logo on the packaging was replaced with just "Fox Video". I'm not sure the video/audio is the same on the 1986, 1990, and 1992 versions or not.
    There was also a Letterbox VHS set in 1992 which had tapes with the same covers inside, with masters sourced from the 1989/1990 "Special Widescreen Edition" LaserDisc releases.
    Also, the 1995 & 2000 sets also got Widescreen counterparts. And the original 1997 set, in addition to a standard Widescreen package, also had a Collector's Gift Set with a bunch of extra swag.

    Great video! The one thing missing was a review of video quality and contents, specifically with the early VHS releases of Star Wars. Did the rental copy have any trailers or anything? Was there much difference between the first commercially-available releases of the trilogy (84-86) vs. the later release (90-92)? Or did they essentially look the same?

    6:58 I can’t help but think Darth Vader would make more sense being on The Empire Strikes Back than a random Stormtrooper, considering how he’s the most prominent in those movies. If anything, the New Hope and Empire covers should be switched around. Yoda also makes WAY more sense for The Empire Strikes back, considering how he does so much more there.
    If it were up to me, I’d have the covers all show the main villain of each movie. New Hope: Tarkin, Empire: Vader, Jedi: the Emperor.

    I have the 1995 editions of episodes 4 and 6 so i got to see the original versions but the 1997 special edition of empire strikes back which i found at a swap meet when i was 10. I didn't know about the different versions at the time. Previously we had rented a new hope the special edition at Hollywood video so when i watched the tape i got at the swap meet i was also confused as to why jabba the hutt was missing.

    5:10 I own all 3 of these, but my copy of the original movie (A New Hope) has the Star Wars logo on the top left instead of the top center as seen at 1:12. Is this some sort of alternate variation of the box art or something? Also this video was very interesting to watch. You earned a sub.

    • @YungJunko
      @YungJunko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very keen observation! You're absolutely correct. So I believe when this edition was released in 1990 under CBS Fox Video, the Star Wars logo was in the corner. When it was reprinted in 1992 for the 15th anniversary, I'm pretty sure they dropped the CBS branding and it was just Fox Video and that's the version where the Star Wars logo is centered.

    • @sleekflash16
      @sleekflash16 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YungJunko Ah, that makes sense. These tapes have actually become my favorite way to watch these films since they are mostly untouched. For my ESB tape, the box as well as the tape label has the CBS Fox Video logo. But when I play the tape, it just says Fox Video. Quite bizarre if you ask me.

    In Russia, when Revenge of the Sith got released we got the VHS version almost immediately! It was a just a bootleg copy of a DVD release, but they even copied the special edition artwork for the VHS box of thie movie. How crazy is that?
    Not only that, but the 2000 special edition of the Return of the Jedi we got had the original Anakin actor appear in the end.

    • @shireling6336
      @shireling6336 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hayden Christensen didn’t get added to Return of the Jedi until the 2004 DVD release anyway so that makes sense that Sebastian Shaw would still appear at the end of the Russian 2000 version.
