In this video i restored an old chisel. The chisel was bent and pretty worn. So i started the restoration with some sandblasting, after that a lot of pitting showed up. After some metal works i wanted to protect the pitting from rust, so i did a cold bluing with orange juice. The juice created a noble layer of rust so the part was rustproof now. After sharpening, making a new handle and a new metal tip, the chisel was ready for the final test. It works perfectly fine now :-)

Love you guys!
I loved this restoration
Is the tincture of the chisel on the orange tasty? 😁😂
Sorry, can't comment properly injured both wrists but thanks for another video. Have an idea for you when I can lift the lid of my little treasures of projects to restore, if you're interested. Take care of yourself and your loved ones, sorry if spelling mistakes, automatic writing.
Hey Corinne, thanks a lot! Of course, iam always interested :-)
Thanks, i definitely will - you too. And get well soon!
@@misterpatina Hello and thanks! We'll "talk" about it when I can type again.
I’ve had this broom 20 years, it’s had 4 new broom heads and 3 new handles!
Trigger!
The Broom of Theseus
you made a new one 😄
Haha, yeah!
Thanks, you made a nice job of that sad chisel !
I love how restorations like these end up looking better than new because they were mass-produced. Turning something like this into a work of art is just a joy to behold.
excellent result ✌️😎👍
Thanks man!
Using orange juice for rust protection is a very clever move! It’s always a pleasure to watch your Videos and see how much effort and love you put in your projects! Beautiful restoration, great editing and an awesome result like always!
Hey man, thanks a lot! 😘
After the orange juice, when you re sanded doesn’t that undo the rust cure? What about camellia oil to stop it rusting?
@@MrSongwriter2 The only thing I can think of, is the OJ Bluing prevents rust down in the remaining pitts. Because if you polish the surface to gleam (and sharpen/flatten with stones) any surface treatment would be worn away, obliterating the rust proofing. But that's pretty normal on a chisel. a good polish is mild rust inhibition by itself. But the pits would be a problem. My guess is the OJ Blue really only remains / was only ever for, the pits to keep them from continuing to rust.
@@JasonRSpenny I’ve gone down the electrolysis route as that cures the rust, then depending splatter with gt85 or camellia oil. I can definitely attest to the camellia oil as I had some rusty garden tools I cleaned up after shed roof leaked. The camellia oil kept them rust free over winter in a very damp UK shed
@@misterpatina I suppose you can't just use Tang..... see what I did there?
Sweet. I knida like the shape the ring gave it.
What a lovely chisel it has become.
Hey iam glad you like it :-)
New methods from u, and also my mechanics.. Amazing vides, always make new one please.
Haha, i definitely will!
A little tip: Straightening the cutting edge is not necessary since it will be automatically straight after correct sharpening. And the tip is probably not hardened since it was not on the right temperature. A simple way to test the correct temperature: It should not be magnetic anymore once it is on temperature. I love these videos from you! Keep going!
Hey Detlef, thank you so much for your hints! 👍
Beautiful, thank you!
Like from Russia and respect!
"I make..." A new one:) yes, we know! Nice video, have great day!

Very nice work M.P. came out beautiful..
Thanks Gary! 🙂
Little chisel.Perfect final.
Thanks my man! 🙂
That was very satisfying to watch. In a perfect world we could rejuvenate ourselves after several decades but in the meantime, battered tools are a nice start!
Maybe you need to drink more OJ 😄
Haha, thanks both of you! :-)
bravo !!! certo che non ti manca neanche un attrezzo complimenti 👍
Very clever!
Thanks!
To quote a friend of mine, "You paid for the full oil stone. Use it."
Good restoration mister Patina 👏👏👏

I will never tire of seeing old tools given a new lease on life.
There will come a lot of more videos :-)
some great craftsmanship per usual.
You can realy learn somthing here guys
Thanks man!
A tip for the next heat treat. The metal has to be heated to non magnetic, and if it doesn’t set the oil on fire it probably wasn’t hot enough
Bright red, then oil quench. If the oil catches fire you're in trouble.
this was way too low temperature, it has to be glowing red. He didn't do proper heat treatment. He should have test the hardness.
Correct. The Curie point 723C. Easiest is to attach a magnet to the underside and when it falls of, quench the object. Sand/polish and then heat to blue and leave it.
@@kib2675 actually, you should heat the steel to austenitizing temperature which is in the range from 850°C to 950°C, depending on carbon content of the steel. Then you keep the temperature for a while to allow the carbon to be completely dissolved in the crystal matrix and the comes the quench. In this case the blade didn't have any red glow which means that the temperature was probably below 525°C (Draper point)
@@kib2675 blue is too much heat and you will blow through your temper. Straw to brown at the most. Aim for Straw color
Beautiful, well done Sir, what a talented man you are From France 🇫🇷, 👍🙌🙌🥇

As always, this is beautiful work. You make it look deceptively easy, but I am certain that few could reinvigorate a humble chisel as you have. Bravo!
Also, Nice file work ;)

Stabo? :D

My uncle was a highly skilled pattern maker in the heavy engineering and gas industry. He died aged 94 last year. Watching videos like this remind me how important and relevant metal working skills still are in the modern world.
magnifique travail, dans les regles de l'art et en plus on apprend des choses je me lasse pas de regarder vos vidéos, longue vie à votre chaine monsieur @bientot

Hey Randy, thanks for watching!
Simple and elegant. Beautifully done. A masterpiece.
Thank you so much! 🙂
Thank you. I did not know about the OJ.
This popped up just as I have some chisels and screwdrivers to tidy.
Never thought of orange juice.
I hope you enjoyed!
Its a cool trick, you can increase the effect by cooking it in orange juice :-)
Well crafted restoration.
Thanks Leonard!

Incredible restore.

Lovely little chisel with a new life. I'm sad we didn't get to see you straighten it but what a great restoration. Not only a nice addition to your tools, but a sweet item to display. Well done, Mr. P.

Straight out of the top draw my friend 👍
Very nice job well done.

Thankyou so much on two counts. Loved the process. Second, last year I purchased online a machined adjustable wrench with fine thread so no play (wobble). But it needed blueing which has been a big problem for me to do. So glad you showed citric acid.

Even your small projects are fun to watch - thank you! ✌🏻🎨☕️
Thank you for watching Susannah 🙂
That little chisel was destined to sit in someone’s mixed drawer full of overly used tools for the rest of eternity until you came along. Just don’t get your glasses of orange juice mixed up now haha. Fantastic end result as per usual 😁
Haha, yeah I bet! Thanks Bro!
Makes me think of "Tool Story" a Fixer Film about tools that come alive.
The wrong orange juice should not be a problem,,,,,, plenty of iron and vitamin C 👍🏻🤣🤣🤦🏻♀️
@@expatmousse5196 I suppose the extra flavor would be a bonus 😆
Beautiful 🙏
Thanks Derek! 🙂
Hey Mr P. Enjoyed this one more the second time. I was wondering about the orange juice rustproof. What needs to be done after removing the metal from the juice? Just wash with water or an oil bath for a day or what? Cool trick that I want to use sometime but want to be sure I know what I'm doing exactly. Nice end result on your old chisel. PS...you get some really rude comments from some really rude people! I was looking at some of the comments to see if you had already addressed my question when I saw some of them. Some people's lack of manners never cease to disgust. Thanks for the continuing education in restoration!!!
Love this one.
Hey Konrad, iam glad you enjoyed!
A couple of points for ya. If you use a single cut flat file it will leave a very smooth finish that would need little if any sanding. Save you a bunch of time since you are filing it anyway. Use a draw file technique to finish when you have the profile you want. The part that goes into the handle is called the "tang" not the "sting". Maybe that's a European thing.. Most of the old chisels I've seen have a brass feral but the steel looks good too. Nice old chisel that was well used.. however I have needed a short chisel on more than a few occasions, this would be perfect.
Thanks for your hints Brad. Iam not a native speaker, that’s why „the sting“ came up.
Hope you enjoyed anyways.
It’s not a ‘feral’ .
It’s a ‘ferrule’.
@@johnstarkie9948 Yeah, I noticed that. Correct you are, it's not a cat. I didn't figure it was worth the time to correct. Normally stuff like that bugs me but sometimes you have to say WTF and move on.. :)
@@bradjohnson9671
You tried to educate.
You tried to teach the OP how to use English words, and which English words to use.
You tried to correct his use of language.
And then you failed to correct your own misuse of a word!!?😀
It’s not only cats which become feral.
The word can be applied to any domestic animal which has learned to live ‘in the wild’.
Even children.
You might pronounce ‘you’ as ‘ya’, but it’s still spelled ‘you’.
I wish I had the capability to test the metallurgy of some of these old edged tools. Many of these old chisels, hand plane blades , etc. really hold a good edge. Others not so much. Same holds true for modern versions. Most of the low end chisels you buy don't stay sharp long regardless how much care you give them. I've often wondered if going through all the restoration hassle is worth it. Some are not very useful and aren't much more than a "wall hanger", others will still be in service decades from now.
That is sweet.
Haha, thanks Sarah!
Great work mate! Interesting use of juice, need to try that.
You can try cooking it in the juice, it increases the effect.
Really good job, you are very skilled!! Thanks for sharing 👍👌
In theUK we call the “sting” the “tang”. Love the orange juice trick!
Thanks Robert!
Sharp!!! Nicely done, looks awesome!👍👍👊
Thanks man!
