  • Learn how to polish plastic cheap and easy with a heat gun. the video shows how to remove scratches from plastic and the plastic panels on your car, motorcycle, bumpers can be restored using a heat gun. headlights restorations is also possible with this method and can use toothpaste or some polish to restore the headlights to a crystal clear finish. Be very careful not to move the heat gun too close to the object being heated up and be sure to keep moving the heat gun so the heat wouldn't built up in one spot fast. hair dryer may work too but that's not shown in this video. so leave a comment if someone got good results with a hair dryer.

what about the big splotches of off-looking areas where it was heated? those look just as bad as the scratches. do they change after it cools down more? if so, you should've shown what it looked like later.

It’s wet from the melt. Once it dries it should be fine.

Just wanted to say that I’ve tried several methods to remove my scratches in a 2019 taco. My last resort was a heat gun and I was not disappointed. Only 2 deep scratches didn’t fully come out, but they’re barely noticeable now. End result also didn’t have splotches like some of the comments suggest.
I cleaned my panel with a diluted dish soap and water solution before working on them, wiped dry, then worked on them. Once cool, I finished them off with Meguires black restorer. Looks great, cheap restoration option vs painting or replacing the panels.
Just take your time, don’t concentrate in the area too long. And I did hear the entire panel a bit to ease the effects of the oil pulling (in efforts to not have blotches). All in all, took an hour to do all four doors. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful!

DO NOT DO THIS! UNLESS YOU WANT SHINY SPOTS!

Yes. It does turn plastic slightly glossy. That depends on how long you hold the heat to the plastic. A little at a time. And a glossy spot on your plastic looks a lot better than the scratches. And there are ways to doll the gloss as well. Heat is the best solution to plastic scratches.

Nice job but how do you get rid of the shiny panel or make it look like the rear of the panel

Another commenter said that “the shiny” will disappear after it dries. I hope so; because it’s important that the panel have a uniform appearance.

Will this method work on the plastic around the car ignition? I have a few scratches from my car key. I'm not sure the material is the same as the door panel.

You would have to paint the plastic. It pulls the oils to the surface that's why it's shiny afterwards

If you do the whole piece it will have a uniform finish.

If the heat gun reduces the graining in the plastic would a graining pad help the final look in your opinion? I used a hair dryer with a narrow nosel. Slower for the novice but maybe safer.
    Thanks

Would this work on clear plastic such as on a dash instrument panel? The clear plastic lense?

Try Meguiar’s PlastX polish and it will be brand new again.

It is normal the area that heated looks more shiny than the area not heated? or after a few minutes it will be change to the normal look?

They say, in other videos. A heat gun is how you bring out the original shine

You should do the entire panel to look uniform then Armoral all the interior to make it all blend. Be careful near switches and speaker grills. Later

I think I would rather have scratches than large areas of burnt and imperfect trim that look like someone has applied a heat gun.....badly.

Now you have shiny spots in your plastic cause you melted the texture away.
