    "bred to work in the swedish winter" - To my knowledge the Bern in Switzerland is the only one ;)
    funny how often Switzerland and Sweden are confused with each other ^^

    I had one we called "Heidi" and all of this is completely true. The thing that's left out is that in their older years they do have hip problems and that obviously does affect them. But yes, they are the perfect and versatile dog, really loving too. She lived over their usual life span to about 13 years.

      Omg we also had a Bernese named "Heidi " . She passed away at age 10 few years back . We missed her so much.

    Have a female that is 6 months old. She is happiest when being engaged by someone in the family. If she's awake she wants to play. I know alot of breeds are like this but the BMD we have is a true stage 5 clinger.

    I studied the breed when my golden was 7. she passed away at 11. 4 years later still found this dog perfect. I found they are calmer then goldens. I wanted a dog I can take camping every weekendand come with me to the farm everyday. Our puppy was calm from day one now 4 months she never barks only at play time. she is so good camping already does not wonder away even around other people or dogs and will just lay down in the hay at the farm and is great in the crate as she had to get use to it for 7 week of great rest from falling off step and when I am home she like to sleep in the bavkyard and chew on bones and has yet to chew any stuff animals lucked out with her for sure and mad fast learners

    I've had three female Berners. They were very awesome and lovely dogs. Oldest, Milla was a bit stubborn, the second, Jutta was steaming full power ahead and the youngest, Maikki, died guite young. I miss them all. Ideally fitting loyal family dogs, but health is sometimes questionable. You had to chose breeder very carefully. Various cancers are killing 'em and hip problems are usual.
    I know, when my time comes, they all are waiting me in the other side, with my deceased cats...

    I got mine to cart
    Skijor in winter (we weren't the fastest...but we were the best looking in the race)
    But the best trick was..."find your boy"
    And he'd run off to find my son...very handy at the cabin

    You have to discipline them from puppyhood. They want to know what is allowed and not. Sadly, a certain percentage are given up age 1-2 bcz the master wouldnt discipline them. An undisciplined one is 120 pound monster jumping on people or threatening them.

    • @suehowery1286
      @suehowery1286 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine was smart enough & loving enough I never HAD to discipline him.
      In his 11yrs he put me before anything or anyone. I promise they know all about your character.

      @@suehowery1286 " i promise you they know all about your character" what a great statement. I agree 100%. So often, i think how much he is a mirror of me. When i say discipline, I mean verbal discipline. A strong NO is all you need. But they need to know what is not allowed (ie:jumping on people, biting their jackets, etc.)

      My Bernese was a one person dog.
      I was his person. Fortunately I had no behavior problems with him. He's the only Bernese I ever had. I just didn't have problems with him 🙂 So I guess some people do.
      What a great dog I had..he was so different from any dogs I owned. I loved them all but this Bernese stood out. I love him & miss him so.
      Thanks for the comment.

    Really? There is some misinformation here.
    We have a Berner and researched the breed extensively before adding one to our family. Without a doubt this is an awesome dog. They are fantastic companions and you haven't experienced canine love until you have a 50kg dog flop on your lap. This is an awesome breed and we cannot be happier. It's going to be Berners for us from here on in.
    That being said I find it hard to believe this channel is from dedicated Berner breeders/trainers. A Berner tends to bond with a single family member. They are great with all other members of their pack but only have a single person they are devoted to. And they are very suspicious of strangers. A Berner is not aggressive with strangers but they are reserved with anybody outside of their family unit.
    Also, as noted by other commenters, this is a Swiss breed. It is not Swedish.

      @2kidsnosleep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely. Certainly not high activity dogs either, more slow and steady. Our Berner girl bonded with me and was a loyal, lovely friend who was more like one of my children. Smart as a whip and had a sixth sense and could read my mind and mood. Just had to put her down from cancer last month. Will get another Berner after a bit, love this breed

      That's my experience. Our berner loves everyone in the family but she's my dog... or I'm hers. I work from home so she's with me the most and I'm the source of her food and treats.

    I see alot on reddit people try get there BMD big fast and that big problem. I like big bmd to but his healt is more important then gis size.
    Big dogs need grow slow and not fast so there bones get strong.
    Other problem now days is people try make big dogs bigger. Normaal size for BMD is 50kg/110 but now days thy go up 60kg/ 132lbs or more and that to big for BMD.
