    Hey, Daniel!
Just as a recommendation, along with the audio examples, I would love to hear your thoughts about each comparison.
You are putting in some great work man, so keep it up please!

Hey Dimitar, thanks for the suggestion. Yes! I do plan making opinion videos with my “final thoughts”. It’s a bit by design because I want the viewer to have an actual referenced opinion first, rather than a hearsay opinion but I do see the importance of having both. Stick around and stay tuned and thanks for the motivation, truly appreciate it. Take care.

@reddmusiclab thanks for your great videos!!! Just wondering on your thoughts for the SA87i VS SA67 tube microphones for vocals and for vocals I am meaning voice-over recording? What are your thoughts on these two for this purpose.....I am considering buying one of these microphones just trying to work out which is best for my purpose. Thank-you.

Hi Fuchida! Man… that’s a very tough question. I’ve not played much with my SA-87i and receive my SA-67 not too long ago. Unfortunately, I’m still redesigning the studio and just can’t get around to testing fast enough.
From what I’ve noticed so far from FB comments is that the 87i is a little dark but very even and smooth. Usually the 67 has a little more sweetening highs than the 87. IMO, for voice over, I’d probably go 87 because opening up highs can be done in the mix. Hopefully I’ll be posting videos soon so we can all be better informed. Take care.

@@reddmusiclab EXCELLENT ... I am looking forward to your videos, even a simple video with you talking into your SA67 and SA87i and alternating would be awesome....for spoken word its very easy to test and compare. In this instance it would be a voice over comparision test NOT a mic test as both are great and will suit different purposes and individual tastes. Love your enthusiasm Daniel in your videos....great work!!!

Thank you Fuchida. Only problem is that computer, interface and a bunch of other stuff is disconnected so even if wanted to do a quickey it’d be pretty impossible. Almost there though! I am in the last phase of the redesign. Thank you for the voiceover idea though. You’ve not been the only viewer who’s mentioned voiceover.

When it comes to darker mics like a u47, do you find them more flexible for compression and eq boosting and tweaking VS something like a u67 or 251?
I wonder if boosting the highs of a u47 may be more desirable then an already brighter mic, and boosting a bright mic will only make it sound thinner ? Versus boosting a thicker mic, the thicker mic will still be thicker if boosted?
I’m keep going back and forth with which mic for me .
I can give you an example of what I’m going for . The vocal tone in the song “meant to live” by switchfoot. I can’t tell if that’s a u47 with a bit of a nasal/silibance boost or if it’s a 251 .
That to me Is the perfect tone for a Rock song. If I had a few set up maybe I could analyze the frequencies of the voice .
I think he used the same mic for the song “dare you to move” but that vocal processing is different but maybe that helps with figuring out the mic type . The chorus on that song sounds a But similar to the processing in meant to live, but the versus are much more “hard” and present , Unlike the versus in meant to live, which are present but still kinda soft/ more obscure in comparison . It seems like he has a nasal frequency boosted too in those songs a bit .
Im trying to figure out which mic style Seems most likely used.

Hey there! Heythere, man! This is a packed question. First off, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to that Switchfoot album. From what I remember, CLA mixed that album but don’t know who recorded. I would say look into that.
As to mic choice and recording chain. Welcome to the Trillion Dollar question that we’ve all been looking for. To start, in order to know which mic to choose, you need to know your mics intimately or at least know it’s characteristics well. Second, see how the performance and tone fit the recording.
Lastly, no matter how great a mic one may have, if there’s no front end preamp and compression going into the recording, one will never be able to truly tell how great the mic is since the raw recording will be to dynamically uneven to make a good judgement.
One more thing, if one is already looking for EQ on the way in, perhaps it’d be better off to check another mic instead. EQ should be a last resort option when recording. Best of luck and wishes.

Hi Raymond, I try to make my shootouts as transparent as possible while still contending with loudness. You’re not hearing much difference from the raw recording to the rendered version in TH-cam.
With all that out of the way, I am at a huge crossroads, the SA-251 is a very sweet sounding mic and when compared with the replicated “Neumann” sound, I gravitate towards the 251. Once the 251 is out of the equation, the 67 then both the 47 and 87 are tied after the 67.
Haven’t played much with the 800 since the new one will soon be here, but I feel the 800 has a very modern sound, though many feel as if it’s too bright but my counter is: what about the 251? That one is bright too.
How’s that for a straight answer? I went Modern Parenting on this and everyone wins! LOL!
