Adia was my little sister's and my favorite song to sing together in my old 77' Camaro. She was murdered by her boyfriend in 1999. She was 20 and a single mother. This song still speaks down to my soul and depicts what I'd say to her. She died a addict. Please tell your family how much they mean to you every chance you get bc you never know when you'll be left with a song.

Nah it's more like the singer telling the friend whose husband she stole that the singer is not really at fault and but actually completely innocent. Might sound like a wholesome song but it definitely isn't lmao
At the Sarah McLachlan concert I went to in June Sarah said that she fell in love with her friends ex-boyfriend, not husband. Her friend obviously felt betrayed and hurt and didn't talk to Sarah for a few years. Sarah went on to state she and the friend made up and have helped each other raise their kids together. Both Sarah and the friend have since divorced their respective ex spouses. They remain friends.
I still cry every time I hear the song, even after all these years. I think it's time that all of us begin to know, not just believe, that we are still innocent. 💚🌍🌎💚🌏

No one in pop writes songs like this today with such beautiful harmonic complexity. Sure there are catchy songs, but they all sound the same! Sarah your body of work is a masterclass in songwriting. Not to mention your amazing ability to grab people deep in their souls when you perform. There will never be anyone else like you.

I don’t think Jewel understands what suffering is in the way that Sarah does and it comes through in Sarah’s music. Sarah writes music that is way more relatable to people because she has suffered. I hate Jewels annoying song “In the end kindness only matters”…. People are almost never ever kind. With that being said I like Selena’s Kill em with kindness song so I guess I just don’t like jewel
@@k.h.4757 Unfortunately your gravely mistaken about Jewel. You see she actually understands American cultural society. Just listen to her classic song "Who will save your soul?" And than come back and tell she has no understanding of people. She sang about the Woke World and many elements about people's addictions and need for Social media! Jewel is brilliant just like her contemporary Sarah Mclachlan and even Sherly Crow to an extent!
@@k.h.4757 that’s cool 😎 jewel don’t like you either and jewel led a very troubled life including poverty so Apparently you don’t know shit about her !!
@@mitchellbrown2706 Just because she has experienced poverty does not mean she understands what its like to suffer. Also poverty can mean many different things so I'm not sure what you are meaning... Was she homeless or something? Or did she grow up in a household where needing more money was the constant focus. I never said I knew shit about her I was just giving my opinion based off what I know. I don't like that she talks about religion so that is probably why I 'm not a fan
Poverty is not just environmental ... sometimes it’s just the mentality in your environment... you grow to be defensive... sometimes for no reason at all! I love both singers dearly and I’m from the so called “hood” ... I was shamed for playing their music ... but, never let that stop me! Religion causes separation in my opinion ... I do respect everyone’s beliefs though ... no matter what! The both of you have valid interpretations... spread love! ❤️
My favorite song-hands down. I'm 37 now, and was in my late teens when this song came out. Right during the best years of music! This song still does to me what it did to me back when it first hit. It never grows old to me. Thank you Sarah!
This brings me back to being a child, being 8 years old and hearing my Mom singing this song in the car with me in the back. I can't help but tear up thinking about it because it was such a good time in my life and this year has been so fucking horrible. It hurts me so badly to know people are suffering around the world because of this virus. I genuinely hope that whoever reads this is doing okay or if you aren't it gets better soon. Please take care of yourselves.
People arent sufferimg a virus-they're suffering for voting pedo/parasites high on adrenochrome into office as they're leaders..when u vote for the worst examples of human excrement an entrust them with your best interests while turning ur back on the Lord God,it's a bit insane 2 think sumthing positive to result from such...idiots..
We should all be critical of the power structure that is actively destroying this country, funding hideous wars in foreign country but neglecting Americans in crisis.
This may be the perfect ballad. The chord structure so gently builds up to that diminished chord ("It's *easy* ") that I get chills each time she does it.
I think of my son every time I hear this song. He became an addict and lives in prison. When she sings Aidia I do believe I failed you, it cuts deep into my soul.

"98 senior in high school, I had my alarm clock set to play the local radio station, One morning I awake to this playing, after class that day I went and got the cd
Ohhh, I'd forgotten about this song. It was on the radio when i was just a kid dealing with abuse trauma, it meant so much to hear these words then. And to be reminded of it now in my 40s after spending my adulthood reclaiming my childhood, griwing as a person, and trying to learn self-love and self-respect, I understand better now the comfort the words gave me.
What a voice she has. It's a beautiful song. If you've had a complicated (possibly) tortured soul in your life, this song seems to coagulate your guilt, sadness, and despair that that person couldn't be helped, despite your best efforts, but to survive, you have to work on forgiving yourself.
This showcases the harrowing vulnerability and the courage it takes to love and be loved - then comes the disappointment and here we go again. Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved?
This is absolutely why I love listening to this song while writing my own story about friendship and forgiveness. There was a girl who almost killed her friend's sister by accident because she was too distracted while driving which ended her relationship with her friend. She was filled with guilt and her friend couldn't forgive her for what happened to her sister, even though her sister still survived. As the time goes by, she somehow had able to forgive herself even though the accident is still a scar to her, because that accident ended her friendship with her friend. In the end, when her friend's mother got cancer, she wanted to atone for the sin that she had done back then. She wanted to donate her organ to her former friend's mom. Her friend's mom lived, but the girl died.
Just another piece of craft from Sarah, one of the most prolific songwriters of her generation, perhaps the best. I love every single album she has made, even the christmas ones.
This song was released the year in which my entire life was turning upside down. I’ve had nearly everything taken from me since then; my family, my friends; my life (4 times). This used to be one of my favorite songs. I’m turning 30 very soon and all the pain I’ve experienced has disabled my ability to grieve appropriately. Hearing this again for the first time in so long has me crying deeply for the first time in so very, very long. I’m so thankful for this masterpiece of music. It’s euphoric to cry again.

Wow, so many years ago. I spent one day filming as an extra in this video in LA in the late 90's. Sarah was a down to earth, nice person I remember. I probably heard this song 1000 times that day as they just keep playing it over and over, but I didn't get tired of it at all. I was in some good footage that got cut, but still in some background for the final. Fun experience.
@@emmahallard1949 Just seeing these comments now. Yeah, Radyradrad must just hide in his basement. I was in a few things for fun when I moved out to LA. Best was Addams Family Reunion where I got a good amount of screen time for an extra. Was a great experience and for years my kids would call out that I'm on TV as AFR was replayed on one of those kids cable channels all the time. Was like 25 then, over 50 now. :(
I havent heard this song or her sing in a couple decades and the first few words almost made a grown man cry with the flood of memories. I wish I could share them all with you. I wish you could share all yours with me.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:7) Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. (Joel 2:12-13)
ack, why does she have to be so freakin' gorgeous and angelic with that voice?! Leaves me in tears every time. I went hiking tonight in Jacksonville Oregon and heard music and asked someone what was going on. It was a Sarah McLachlan concert at Britt!!! So I hung out in Britt Gardens for a bit listening, it was amazing! :)
One of the best singers ive ever heard 36 years walking this earth. Absolutely beautiful as well. Ive never seen or heard words come out of a mouth so beautifully

Not many songs make me emotional but every time I listen to this one it does. Can’t really explain why. It’s a beautiful song and her voice is so soothing.
Your comment brought me to tears. I lost my fiancé 9 months ago. I'm having a night where I am very sad and keep thinking my daughter is the only thing that has pulled me through. I am so so sorry for your loss my love ❤ My mother has also lost two children. She is the strongest person I know. I am praying for you 🙏🙏❤❤
I'm a man, and man, I can weep listening to this song...takes me into the past, bittersweet memories, can't help but to think of those times. That final dominant (7) chord at 3:57 is just so beautiful (for the music enthusiasts, you'll know what I mean). It gives a sense of uncertainty whether Adia has forgiven Sarah for marrying Adia's boyfriend or not. Good songs make you always come back, sometimes years later, but it shows, that they're on your mind.
How could this lady make so many remarkable songs in such a short period of time and then disappear just as quickly. Memories of high school, college, friends of youth, and the uncertainty of life filled with hope, this song captures it.
Sarah is a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice, and this is an incredible song...but let's not forget to remember the director of this video, for the amazing cinematography and editing, which perfectly captured the essence of the song and performance. Superb all the way around.
Mom I think of you even though we're not close. I miss you but I don't miss the toxic ways you treated me. I try and carry on to be strong for myself and my brother to be the best version of me. Every time I hear Sarah I hear you playing her music in the mornings being the old you that I will always love.
+88 land I was concerned with your first comment about depression. Then you said unfortunate. I worried something had happened to her. I googled her name and she was fine. But no, I don't find this song depressing. I have loved this song since it first came out.
+88 land I will check out the song you recommended. Silence. You didn't offend me and I don't think you are brash. Everyone's opinion of how they perceive music is what makes people interesting. How boring would life be if everybody never voiced their opinion on music, one of the greatest gifts to mankind? I know Jesus, since I was a young girl. Haven't heard of the other gentleman you mentioned. Would love to know more.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Sara and would often get some walking in the woods listening to her. I'd come back sort of depressed for SURE! GORGEOUSLY beautiful and DEEP music but for sure depressing! Listen to the words of so many of her songs. That's not a knock...music is about touching people and she is an incredible artist.
Oh my. This album was absolutely huge, a multi platinum seller in the pre-digital/download/streaming era. The singles were inescapable on the radio for years. Overshadowed is not a word I’d ever use to characterize its run. Edited to add: EIGHT TIMES PLATINUM.
@@slacktoryrecords4193 I meant more in retrospect. There were so many great artists that were really big but there's only so much room in the way back machine, and they can tend to fall down the memory hole and just aren't referenced as much relative to other bands that were may no more widely appreciated at the time. I think of folks like Collective Soul, Natalie Imbruglia, Natalie Merchant, Blues Traveler, Blind Melon, etc... Sometimes, if younger folks are aware of them at all, it might be more from a meme than from knowing their actual work. There are lots of videos of younger folks reacting to songs from past decades, and some huge artists from that time often seem highly under-represented. Even folks like Smashing Pumpkins or Alanis Morrisette seem to be highly under-known these days relative to their size at the time. Maybe I'm being selective in my sampling, I dunno.
I remember when this song came out in the 90s. I remember I was so amazed at her depth of voice and emotion. This is a very touching song. I don't know who she is singing about or what happened, but it must have been a very emotional experience.
@@dutchcloggiehow so? It's her way of taking accountability and realizing she was fucked up for it. But the heart wants what it wants and I'm sure the story has more layers. Otherwise she wouldn't of made a song
I know a lot of people who rip on Sarah and give people crap for liking her, but she really has written some great songs and this is her masterpiece. gorgeous song.
just when you start to believe this song is deep it grabs you out of no where and drags you deeper.. it can bee applied to everything.. it is the perfect song..
The older you get, the more you understand and appreciate. I almost feel like a different person l listening to this, certainly I appreciate this music a lot more now and other songs from the era.
Been looking for this song for years since I grew up listening to it on the radio as a kid. Didn’t remember the lyrics but finally found it today! Gotta say this song is beautiful! It just makes me feel like everything is going to be okay no matter how bad things are at the moment. If you are reading this and are going through something, keep your head up! You’ll weather this storm! It can’t rain all the time.
This song speaks to how much a failure I am. I wish I could take back everything I did wrong but I understand what is done is done. For anyone who listens to this try to do better for your partner, family, and friends.we only get one shot here at life so make it your best shot.
These lyrics, this song and Sarah hits hard. Thank you. I think everyone at some point of knowledge, wisdom and understanding totally gets this. We all falter.. does it matter???
We are born innocent, our intentions start good and sometimes we falter. The words are just too much, underneath all the layers, veils and disguises, our intentions are pure but things do not always turn out the way we want. Such is life.
Yes, starting from scratch we are all "innocent". BUT even left to our own devices, we will sometimes (hopefully not too often) choose the selfish path. Our intentions aren't always pure. That's just wishful thinking.
Romefox -- We are not born innocent. We inherit the sin of our first parents. If anyone is "still" innocent it is only by the grace of God. And this is not "easy." We must strive to enter the narrow gate, as the Gospel teaches. The song is beautiful, but at the same time, ridiculous.
She has the most feminine beautiful voice I ever heard. I remember buying this album after my wife left me back in 2000 and her energy kept me from going nuts during that time.
I moved to PEI in 1997 and a woman , six years my senior and I were friends in Ottawa when I left. She returned to visit me late that summer on a dark cloudy day I drove back from the airport, my heart aching wanting more, this song came on. She has since married and we talk weekly so all is good
This is when real artists wrote their OWN music, instead of just being handed a song to sing written by someone else. You can hear the passion in these songs, cause they wrote their own songs!
This song is great in so many ways. It's from the constant hit dropping 90's while it gives a nostalgic feeling of classic 70's ballads like The BeeGees "How Deep Is Your Love" and flows with that 80's wave of pop hits like The Bangles "Eternal Flame". I especially love its steady paced beat and strike of the cymbals throughout parts of the song, topped off with Sara's beautiful voice. This song is flawless!
Eternal Flame, yes. I don’t get How Deep Is Your Love here. The song it reminds me a lot of is Bell-Bottom Blues for the phrasing of the … diminished (?) chords - to me they sound like dominant 7ths… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
She's now 14 and this song makes me cry when I think about how my little girl isn't my little girl anymore, but deep inside? I know she still needs me.
I grew up in the early 2000s and my mother was a huge Sara McLachlan fan she used to play this song and now every time I hear this song I remember the good times
This brings me back to 1998 when I was fourteen and I was obsessed with Sarah McLachlan's music. She also kind of resembles my aunt. I used to play this song on repeat all the time, and the combination of her and Winona Ryder gave me the idea to have a short pixie haircut, and every time I grew my hair out, I wanted it back to a pixie again LOL (which I'm still sporting to this day) Love it, I miss the 90's so much!
Sarah McLachlan has a timeless voice that will stand supreme through the ages. That’s not an opinion but objective statement. Regardless of current vocal trend, her voice has the precise control and effortless quality that surpasses all other vocalists. Her voice and talent is a rare treasure that you only see possessed by a few people, ever.
I grew up during the 60s and 70s and I am a rock person to the core, but Sarah McLalachans voice touches my soul. I can't say that about many artists. She just has such a beautiful touching voice.
I can’t believe she was around 30 yrs old when this came out. I remember I heard this as a preteen and she seemed sooo mature and wise. How the times have changed….
Tell your mom you love her. Let her know how much you appreciate and love her no matter your differences. Mine died 3 days after my birthday in March. We were estranged and coudnt forgive each other. Don't make the mistake I did. God bless you.
@@samlarossa8905 i don't think we're talking about her affairs. the person was just saying how this song is made to say how we should forgive our past mistakes even if we hurt other people or if it wasn't our fault. Not an excuse but learning how to move forward in life. And if Sarah did do that, it shouldn't be our concern unless she physically hurt someone.
Absolutely splendid song she's not only a hell of a songwriter she's one hell of an artist. This awesome classic isn't just one of my favorites this gem is a million seller!! God bless!
Thank you Sarah M for this incredibly beautiful and amazing masterpiece of music. And thank you for this beautiful song that covers everything: from finding your first love and working through the ups and downs of dating relationships
I saw Sarah for the first time last night in the Philly show of the 30y Celebration of the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Tour. I always liked her music, and this was always my favorite from her...but her music didn't speak to me the way it does as an adult. So to simultaneously experience her performing live for the first time AND experience her music for the first time as an adult was something I'll never forget. She is amazing, and this song just hits different after you've had some serious life experience.

Sarah And Jewel are two of the best female artists of all time! I would dare say that a million times. Both have unique voices and styles!
I've always said that 1996 and 1997 were the best two years of music in human history. I still primarily listen to songs from the 90s.
I feel the same way when I hear "I Will Remember You."

Great to hear that people are still listening to this beautiful music
Stunning gives me chills when she say “ We Are Born Innocent … in that angelic voice . Just purely beautiful .
This may be the perfect ballad. The chord structure so gently builds up to that diminished chord ("It's *easy* ") that I get chills each time she does it.
I thought that was just a dominant 7th chord. There’s so much harmonic complexity happening in this song, it’s hard to know what’s what!

Right here. Listening to one of the greatest songs ever written.
Adia, I do believe I failed you
Adia, I know I've let you down
Don't you know I tried so hard
To love you in my way
It's easy, let it go
Adia, I'm empty since you left me
Trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
To see where we went wrong
There's no one left to finger
There's no one here to blame
There's no one left to talk to, honey
And there ain't no one to buy our innocence
'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me, Adia, we are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?
Adia, I thought that we could make it
I know I can't change the way you feel
I leave you with your misery
A friend who won't betray
I pull you from your tower
I take away your pain
And show you all the beauty you possess
If you'd only let yourself believe
That we are born innocent
Believe me, Adia, we are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?
'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me, Adia, we are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?
Believe me, Adia, we are still innocent
'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me, Adia, we are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
But, does it matter?

Amazing how music brings us such specific memories ❤
Great story
Ohhh, I'd forgotten about this song. It was on the radio when i was just a kid dealing with abuse trauma, it meant so much to hear these words then. And to be reminded of it now in my 40s after spending my adulthood reclaiming my childhood, griwing as a person, and trying to learn self-love and self-respect, I understand better now the comfort the words gave me.
The 90’s was the last decade with truth good music.
So true!!
What a voice she has. It's a beautiful song. If you've had a complicated (possibly) tortured soul in your life, this song seems to coagulate your guilt, sadness, and despair that that person couldn't be helped, despite your best efforts, but to survive, you have to work on forgiving yourself.
I love this song
This showcases the harrowing vulnerability and the courage it takes to love and be loved - then comes the disappointment and here we go again. Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved?
@@richardjohnson7638 So true Richard.

So true and so deep! Powerful words!
Yes, starting from scratch we are all "innocent". BUT even left to our own devices, we will sometimes (hopefully not too often) choose the selfish path. Our intentions aren't always pure. That's just wishful thinking.
True words
Romefox -- We are not born innocent. We inherit the sin of our first parents. If anyone is "still" innocent it is only by the grace of God. And this is not "easy." We must strive to enter the narrow gate, as the Gospel teaches. The song is beautiful, but at the same time, ridiculous.

I dont know much about the make up of music but I am sure your comment was deep and rich.
Eternal Flame, yes. I don’t get How Deep Is Your Love here. The song it reminds me a lot of is Bell-Bottom Blues for the phrasing of the … diminished (?) chords - to me they sound like dominant 7ths… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
