  • This video was not planned in advance. Mr. Ischii had just arrived in Nuremberg on his way back from an engagement at a German television station. The original intention was for Mr Ischi and the producer of this song, Mr Noboru Suzuki, to meet each other for a short time. This became an impromptu interview and then a video for this song. Even though the request was sudden and unexpected, Mr Ischi accepted the request in a good spirit, changing his clothes and giving a performance of "The Chicken and the Egg" without the benefit of a rehearsal. Both his good will and his unscripted performance exhibit an extraordinary level of professionalism which is to be much admired. It should be noted that Mr Ischii does not normally perform in English, and that the lyrics of "The Chicken and the Egg" were were not originally written with him specifically in mind, but rather as a means of celebrating the world's poultry industry.from the hatchery to the dinner table. It is due to Mr Ischi's amazing talent and also the talent of the German music composer that this song has become something much more, conveying an unexpected depth of meaning going far beyond the commercial intentions that motivated its inception. The lyricist, Professor Hikaru Kitabayashi of Daito Bunka University and the producer Noboru Suzuki of Belbird Productions wish to express their gratitude to Mr Ischii for his amazing performance and Mr Alpina for his equally amazing Music
    (C) Lyrics by Belbird, Japan

In reference to a comment by "The Komodo Collective", I, too, have come to see this song as having metaphorical significance, although, when I wrote the lyrics, I was more concerned with matters of rhythm and thematic unity. However, Marc Alpina, the composer, and Takeo Ischi, the singer, both being artistic geniuses, brought out other aspects of the song which I had not seen in the beginning. My present take on the song, having listened to it innumerable times, is that it is, indeed, a metaphor of human life. Living in Japan, I see human birth, much like a chicken's, as being born in a hot spot and human death leading to a trip to a crematorium, which may be thought of as a type of frying pan. At least, though, I don't think it to be inappropriate to demand that a big, gaudy, funeral wake ("I want the dinner table to be grand") to be given in my honor when my final appearance is made. In the mean time, enjoying survival as much as possible is probably all either humans or chickens should wish for. One further comment, which I liked very much, was the idea by "Think Dragon Think" that a future song be written about chickens and heaven. Lastly, I would like to express my profound gratitude to everyone who has taken the time to leave a comment. I see song-writing as a constant learning process, and having been able to use both positive as well as negative comments to further my education as a writer, remain grateful to all.

I'm a musician myself, trust me this is seriously good. People can argue all they want about the flamboyance of this song, but Takeo is spot on, Marc did a great job, and if your the lyricist, we definitely have you to thank for a great time. I think we take ourselves too seriously today, and videos like this remind us to take it easy and enjoy things a bit more.

@@louisb.6149 This comment means more to me than any other. I am currently reaching the end of a career as the senior professor of a graduate school program in linguistic ethnography at a certain Japanese university and am more and more finding song-writing and song production to be an all-consuming passion. Becoming famous is not a life goal. Intellectual challenges are. However, receiving recognition from people with an intimate understanding of music, such as yourself, does produce an incredibly sweet feeling of accomplishment. Thank you again for making my brain feel 50 years younger.

There are so many deep levels to this song. Takeo Ischi is a musical genius! The different dishes of food represents the different ways we can express our love. He is also obviously straight forward saying he wants to please. "Eat me with pleasure, gourmet food's a treasure, drink a fine wine" is a metaphor to savor and enjoy every moment of love and life. Heart emoji's right there, wow.
This could also be a message about power dynamics and exploitation. Stay with me here... The different chicken dishes are about power and control with each dish representing a different strategy to gain power. The author will stop at nothing to gain power with his friends being scrambled yet he did fine. "Pick a pick, peck pick, found that I was struggling in a hot spot"... wow this is deep stuff. He is speaking about difficulties achieving his goals in a competitive and hostile environment. Then he says "out of the shell, raised to be organic, make a good dish". Holy smokes! Hes clearly talking about the ways in which people are often molded and manipulated by those in power and if you want to maintain your integrity you need to resist those influences.
Could also be about just chicken and an egg too.

@@BATMAN-vw2eg Thank you. I think there are certain networks in the world we live in where good energy is produced and certain where bad energy is produced. The lyrics of this song were written in a "good energy" hot spot, created by a great group of wonderful people. I was lucky to be asked to contribute to this as the lyricist.

Mr Ischi is a wonderful person who takes joy in life and in being with others, but also works hard to keep constantly improving the artistry of his singing and his performances. He puts this into his "chicken songs" as fully as his other work. Just a comment, though, on chicken ownership, as the lyricist of this song, I attempted to write a song that, while being honest to reality, would also reflect the deep affection I have had for the various pet chickens I have had during the course of my life and the joy they have brought me. Personally, everytime I listen to this song, I feel gratitude to Mr. Ischi for bringing this to life so beautifully and, of course, equally to the others connected with the creation of the song and video. Thank you for the comment. It struck a chord with me.

This is part of a "Chicken Trilogy" which not only includes "Chicken Attack" but also his equally famous "Bibi Hendl" which was sung in a now little used language from southern Bavaria, but for which an English language video with English subtitles for the hearing impaired has been produced. As for "Chicken Attack", there is also now a heavy metal version on TH-cam which he sang together with the Taiwanese group Chthonic.

@@jamespoleman241 Sorry, I misunderstood. I actually am the person who wrote the words to the song, so I was confirming that there are various places in the song where it is possible to give more than one interpretation to the same words. That's what I thought you were getting at by quoting the words "Eat me with pleasure".

I tend to see the song in metaphorical terms. Human existence in most parts of the world all too often means being exploited by a small minority, being "cooked" so to speak and eaten up until nothing is left other than a garbage bag of bones. The song's message, though, is hopeful. Enjoying life while it still exists is something the individual has at least partial control over.

All food is murder. I believe this, but this doesn't mean that I believe in starvation to death for the whole animal kingdom. What I believe is that, no matter what one's eating habits might be, respect should always be maintained for the food we eat and the life it costs the universe to provide it to us. I hope, as the lyricist of this song, that people listening to Takeo Ischi's rendition of it will feel something of the sense of gratitude for all life that this song was meant to convey, even if only indirectly.
