Maybe he regenerated as a female? Controversial.
Speaking of which, this lady reminds me of Elisabeth Sladen a bit.

This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The story is so layered that it must be rewatched multiple times to fully appreciate its message. It’s like a puzzle piecing all the information together. Truly brilliant cinema.
I came to the conclusion that the ultimate message, is basically what it says on the tin... it’s hereditary.
But for the Graham’s, what they have inherited from generations that came before them is hell on earth. Unbeknownst to the Graham family, they all have the Demon Paimon running through their bloodline. (Only the cult are aware of this fact and orchestrate every scenario to help Paimon get a male host)
Annie, Peter and Charlie each have their personal “self”, but also in them they have a demon soul bursting to break free and take full control of the host. This excludes the father, who is somewhat a literal and metaphorical saint throughout the movie.
We are watching a war of Good vs Evil taking place within each of the main characters.
Each one from the mother’s bloodline is tainted with this Demon who ultimately wants to be a male and be the sole ruler / king Paimon, and will kill even its own family members to get there. Annie sleep walking is actually Paimon taking control. This is why she attempts to burn them while they sleep. It’s Paimon trying to destroy the competition. Even subconsciously, Annie has resentment towards Peter as he is ultimately a better host for Paimon and Annie knows this, subconsciously. You can see they each have basically a split personality. Their individual self, and also their inherited Demonic bloodline. We witnessed the Demon successfully erase peters soul and take control of him, a male host, with the help of the cult.
This had been the plan all along.
It makes you question your own family history and how little we know of where we originally come from, what runs through our own bloodline??
This is ultimately what cut to the core of me after studying this film. Absolute masterful piece of art from Ari Aster. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
way more stuff happens that ties in with this theory but you need to see it for yourself to fully appreciate it.
I highly recommend you watch this movie multiple times, it will change you.
    Thanks for stopping by 💋

No offense meant to her, but with Mark being the major horror fan he is, I was curious to see what he thought of it.

Officially out on the 15th, I'm sure he'll review it then. Also very curious to see what he thinks; to me it looks absolutely terrifying.

I was about to say exactly the same thing. I think Kermode missed out on reviewing A Quiet Place too. So the two most recent "acclaimed" horror movies, he doesn't review, which as you suggest is slightly ironic.

Saw it with my wife, our friend and 12 year old nephew and each of us had a different response. Wife was told it would be like the Exorcist and was massively let down, I was on the edge of my seat with the movie ratcheting up the tension, Nephew was just expecting jump scares so therefore didn't think it was tense or scary at all and friend genuinely laughed throughout the movie.

Actually the guy in The Shining was a previous owner of the hotel who wanted his lover to wear a bear suit while doing it!
It's a hint of one of novel subplots

Clarissa Loughrey is right about the score for this movie being extremely unnerving on it's own, I've not seen the movie yet (I'm going this weekend though & I'm looking forward to it) but I have heard the score for the movie and even without having seen the movie that score on it's own is bone chilling.

I love Toni Collette and she's a brilliant actress, but I can't watch this film because I can't watch horror films. And based upon all the reviews this is a really good horror film I hope everybody enjoys it.

It's absolutely brilliant. When they used the tagline "This generation's The Exorcist" - it wasn't hyperbole. And I always say the Exorcist is THE scariest film ever. In my estimation it IS a classic.

For so many years I would watch horror movies that got good reviews, but yeah, I've also decided that I just can't put myself through it any more. It's a shame because I feel like I'm missing out but if are of that disposition where they really affect you it's not worth it.

After you see the movie, go back and see the trailer and you'll see where they did give certain things away but if you've ONLY seen the trailer, you'll never figure out how this movie is going to play out.

Youre right but there is a funeral scene where the mother cries at the beginning and even though i havent watched the movie i suspect that it is charlie who died because you cant see her in that scene.

Just came back to watch this review after seeing the film, and I think it's spot-on. The analysis of the film's influences is particularly well-observed, but I think Clarisse really gets to a lot of why the film works as well as it does. The film is interesting in exactly how much it veers away from the standard theatrical horror formula, giving us something more like It Follows or The VVitch than The Conjuring or Insidious.

I saw it yesterday and I am in total agreement with Clarisse here. I think this is one that will be exalted for years to come and as a bona fide Horror and genre film fan, I think it is one of the best modern horror movies of recent times. It really does linger with you, just the subject matter alone was unsettling and nihilistic enough to leave a lasting impression on me.
The fact that this is also a debut feature? Ari Aster is one to keep an eye on for damn sure...

I was onboard for It Follows, The Babadook, The Witch, Neon Demon . . . but Hereditary just fell absolutely flat for me. I wanted to be terrified, and I scare pretty easy in movies, but this didn't work on any level for me. But that's ok, because it's not like this is the last artsy A24 horror movie ever. Maybe the next one will get me.

I so wanted to like this, but found it dull and not the slightest bit frightening. Poor occult Dennis Wheatley copy that made me laugh more than anything else. Saw things coming just a bit too often to pull me in and believe in it. Great performance however from Tony C, but even that didn't save it from being meh. Faired slightly better on a second viewing, but I don't want to see it a third time.
The cinematography, lighting and music are way better than the actual story content and saved me from falling asleep. Worth seeing however, as I think it's a marmite movie and likely to appeal to a younger audience. I think Exorcist era movie goers are likely to be dissapponited.

Film starts brilliantly. Ends of a let down. I think most real horror fans who enjoy the construction of terror and enjoy the classics, not just more modern horror film franchises , will also feel let down. I do not agree with Loughrey, but each to their own

I really don’t understand the hype . Their promoting it to be this scary movie and it wasn’t . The story isn’t very good and is all over the place. Some of the parts were actually silly and a couple of laughs came from the audience .

The most disappointing cinema experience I can remember. A complete mess. What a shame.
People in the cinema were literally laughing AT the film in the last sequences.
If not for Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne this really would be forgettable. Don’t believe the hype.
