I remember reading a review of Garanca's Carmen. The reviewer said everyman in the audience at the Met would have left their mothers to follow her into the mountains by the end of the first act. Funny, and very true.
Having watched the entire opera: the amount of dancing, (and vigorous, passionate, constant movement in general) Ms Garanca does, I'm in AWE!!!! To sing that beautifully and brilliantly, while constantly moving around takes a special talent and discipline. Brava, Signora 👏 💐
I think she's fantastic in this role. I've heard people saying that ''she is too elegant to be a Carmen''... In my opinion she totally owned the character, i mean, she has a different culture, a completely different ethnic background and she looks here like a gypsy, love her acting and her amazing voice!!!
ok, she's good, but i am french and i unterstand nothing except the chorus. If you want the greatest artist search maria callas th-cam.com/video/Za5V6NQDc2Y/w-d-xo.html
Wow. This is Bizet, and there's no microphone on Garanca, folks. To bring that much physical energy to a scene like this, and to seamlessly fill the Hall with that voice...I've never seen anything like it. Bravo!
This is just so magnificent. Watching this reminds me of everything I worked so hard to change in my life, everything I succeeded with and everything I failed at. It makes me feel renewed energy to keep working towards my goals, even as they grow distant before me. My passion has never died, never will. Thanks to music and performances like this.
This is simply fantastic! The best Carmen I’ve seen. I was in the live HD broadcast that day and I’m sure all our jaws were dropping from this powerful perfect Carmen…
Sorry but I don't quite understand. The song so can someone try and explain what the women is saying or is there another way of teancelating it English ??

I love this Carmen and Elina and Roberto are WOW. I also love that as a Latvian she is so modest, not arrogant because there are so many fine opera singers from such a small country. The training is so good. But Elina for me is still the best mezzo in the world. And she owns the stage. This Met opera was easily the best production I have seen. Epic.
I just read her autobiography. It was deeply personal and beautiful. She talked about growing up in Latvia at her grandparent's farm. When I first watched Elina's interviews I was struck by how authentic and real she was. When I read her book I understood why. I highly recommend it
This scene is so cool! Sensuality, passion, energy... Imagine the slap in the face for the public in Paris in 1830 something when this was created... They were used to see only royal characters in opera and here they see a fiery gypsy femme fatale...
Much earlier opera has non-noble characters, including peasants, though. Don Giovanni and saucy peasant girl Zerlina? It wasn't Bizet's first opera featuring non-noble characters, either. I think it may be somewhat of a myth overall that Carmen was such a shock, based on a rather inaccurate image of nineteenth century stuffiness - certainly people complained, but then, someone always does.
ElinaG is Carmen....We will just have to live with the fact that AngelaG never did it, except for a highlight or two, and be glad that ElinaG was so perfect...
Elina è stata meravigliosa in quest'opera.
I watched it tonight together with my almost 5-year-old son through Met Opera's free nightly opera streams during the coronavirus pandemic. I am in awe. This is my favorite part, as well as the very end. Thank you Met Opera, words are not enough. I am so grateful.
Excellent performance! Please, write conductor's name and orchestra in description of videos like this. They do a lot of significat work, we should know them!
Wow, she's a dancing queen. She rocks indeed, such a plenty of visual delight.. The only thing is it's just so different from the classical opera i used to see that i feel like i'm watching a musical only with operatic vocal..i don't know maybe i'm conservative.. Truth is that she set herself up and proved herself as a dynamic and dramatic singer in opera world.
I just saw "a" Carmen done by the Seattle Opera, the motorcycles, and Zuniga getting kicked in the balls by Carmen did not come off well. The male chorus phoned in their lines, aw geez, had to come here to get my faith back. Thanks Elina.

In order to be sexy, elegance is required. Carmen is a sexy gypsy so, Garanca fits the role perfectly!
Elina the best Carmen of all times. Seductive, provocative, charming, with beautiful voice. She is the Carmen complete and integral
She is the best of this time, and still waiting for the next.
also considering how lucky to find her, looks like a ballet dancer, total package!!!
There are many great carmens, but Elena is definitely the best of our time, she had to do it and she is truly our elegant gypsy
Well.... best I've seen since my FIRST Carmen, Rise Stevens.
