You are totally right about the pacing but actually even if they thought they didn’t have enough material in the comics this would have felt more like Garfield with a couple of changes and one could have been just presenting the story in a slower pace, I mean it’s a lazy character after all. I get kids these days may enjoy a faster pace but the story has some simmilarities to the classic Garfield tv special ‘Garfield on the town’, only this time he meets his dad instead of his mother, and that had a relatively calm pace at times . It would have been a nice touch to show both the dad and the mother being the same as she was but for some reason continuity is not big on Garfield in recent times, maybe Jim Davis doesn’t care anymore. In the early years I think the secondary characters were used more often and better. They could have had more scenes at the home or outside of it with Jon and still include the dad or the heist adventure. They could have used Odie better and have another characters like Nermal or Arlene joining the adventure. I especially don’t understand why they gave Jon such a minimal role. For kids that don’t know the character they basically present a kind of manipulative but decent emotional sequence between Garfield and Jon, and then Jon doesn’t play a very big role in the whole thing. So it seems and odd structure to me no matter if you know about Jon or you are a kid and you haven’t read the comic. At the very least he could have played a bigger role in the third act. Other than that although it is a very generic movie I do think kids will find it entertaining cause the animation is well done and often visually funnier than the jokes in the script. The slapstick is well executed in terms of pacing and visuals.
