    Before too many folks get upset, Brown is quoting loosely from an edition of the CEV translation published by the American Bible Society. It's called the Poverty and Justice Bible. Brown did not make it up or add a new verse to this story in Matthew 25.

    • @TheMangomelon789
      @TheMangomelon789 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I think its debatable. That's one of the problems I find with religion of all kinds. The texts can be interpreted in thousands of different small ways both during the initial translations and in readings by faith leaders and regular individuals. People use the schemas and constructs theyve already set up in their minds while interpreting the texts and the results are usually biased toward whatever the person wants the text to say, rather than the original intent of the writers (who I also have issue with for other reasons that I won't go into here). I like the translation he is using. I think it takes away some of the ambiguity of the original phrase and I dont see anything wrong with that. I think plenty of people do interpret the text the way he is saying, even if maybe you and some others see it differently. I'm not a religious person, myself but if we go on the assumption that God exists and bestowed his word upon certain people who then wrote it down, well it seems like we've basically endured a really long game of telephone. First there is the inevitable muddled language and mistakes that the original writers would've made purely due to human error and because it is a reeeaaallly long book and there must be plenty of times when maybe something was misstated. Then you've got the millions of translations throughout time. For any of the English translations it had to be translated from the original Latin and then from old English and has been revised plenty of times during the whole process to serve various purposes of agendas of specific humans. On top of that it is then interpreted differently by every person who reads it. Now we could assume that God made sure his message was executed perfectly all along the way, but whose to say which exact translation is that right one since there are sooo many different factions and different religions with different forms of text. Also, if we consider God's pattern of behavior when it comes to intervening in humanity it doesnt seem likely that he would babysit the text all along the way. Anyway, now I've just gone off track a bit, lol. My point is that everyone has different interpretations that often are just manifestations of what they already think/want. On top of that, it is unlikely that any of the current translations are absolutely perfect when compared to the original text and even the original text likely had errors when compared to God's original word (if we are assuming that God exists and gave his word to the people). Again, I'm not religious, but I've thought about this a lot and have observed both the negative and positive effects of religion in society.

      The pin is a canary in a cage, like the canaries that coal miners carried down into the mines when they worked to warn them of dangerous gas buildup. Brown got the pin from a union worker and he wears it pretty much all of the time as a show of support for the workers' rights movement. He tells the story of the pin quite often in public appearances. And yes, Brown's gravelly voice is a bit weird at first. It's always been that way and I supposed I've gotten used to it. Regardless, he's a great senator and the people of Ohio are lucky to have him.

    God is not indebted to high minded individuals who presumptuously aim to "amend," or update the immutable truths of the Bible. Instead, we need to be willing and able to "rightly divide" the Word of Truth. It is already obvious what the 25th chapter of Matthew is saying to untold generations. The expression, "the least of these" is helpful, inasmuch as it alludes to the very real interpersonal perception of folks who, for whatever reason, think less of others. It does NOT imply an embedded prejudice within the Holy Writ itself.

      It's unavoidable. The original texts are not in English, and so we have to figure out what set of English words best describes the originally understood meaning. Sometimes the meaning is halfway between two phrasings because there's no such word in English, or not with the exact same connotation. Not to mention some of the more controversial passages where the original meaning is debated, though this is a small minority of verses. And then the fact that modern word usage changes over time, so we continually have to update the translations.
      And then superimposed on top of all of that is how pleasurable it is to the ear. There are more literal, accurate translations of the bible out there, such as the NASB. However, they don't sound very good -- they're not very poetic and pleasant to the ear. So then you have other translations like the NIV that are designed to compromise a little on the precise wording in order to make it sound nicer. Different translations for different purposes and situations.
