I suspect this isn’t uncommon at this level & it seriously needs to be addressed. What is uncommon is deliberately hauling them off by the boxload at the end of a term, knowingly storing them in your unsecure cellar, lying about it, & refusing to turn them over when requested, & violating a subpoena. The former is negligence on the part of someone tbd. The latter is criminal.
A lot of documents are just regular administrative work that shouldn't be classified any more than your corporate management notes. Then there are other types of documents that hold real sensitive info, like data on nuclear capabilities of countries - which Trump took. Names of agents deployed in other nations.

Yeah. In an ideal world this wouldn't happen at all, but I think we're all getting a dose of reality here. Particularly with people who deal with that much documentation, so much of it classified in some way, and probably quite often while in transit between one place and another. If I had to keep track of every piece of paper somebody shoved in to my face between bites of a sandwich and while boarding an aircraft, I think I would probably forget some, too.

While not excusing mishandling, there's long been concern about the phenomenon of "classification bloat", wherein more documents are classified than need to be in order to avoid oversight and more people are granted clearances than need them because it's regarded as a status symbol. I recall hearing over a decade ago that at least 2 million Americans held "secret" clearance, and those trends have only accelerated as the GWOT continues. You know, that could be a game. You have a person holding a deck of cards. On the cards are either a pretty image on one side and Santos written on the other; or the pretty image on one and a smiley face on all the others. A psychologist would see that as classic lying behavior and visible cognitive dissonance. Pence, who claims to be a "main of honor" which he is not (i.e., Trump's running mate = NOT honorable) had to sit there and lie directly on camera for a question he may not have been prepared to answer. Truth is, he probably took loads of documents home for review and reading, which I'm not actually against. After all, he obviously had security clearance to view those documents, was constantly surrounded by Secret Service and surveillance, and he eventually had to leave the White House to let Trump and Melania go to sleep. And, unlike Trump, Pence probably needed to actually READ those documents to prep for some important meetings (instead of hoarding them like Trump as display trophies or espionage leverage to keep from going to prison). So yeah, its possible, like Biden, that out of all the hundreds or thousands of classified documents that he had to shuffle around for 4 years while in office, Pence or his staff likely missed a couple when they got mixed up with other papers. No big deal. Like Biden, Pence did the right thing and immediately self-reported, returned them, and requested a thorough search for any other misc classified documents just to make sure they got them all. But Trump? No. He refused to return them for way more than a year, after multiple official NARA requests and after a subpoena, forcing the DOJ to send in the FBI to secure and recover the documents. Then came the long list of ridiculous excuses, including that they were "planted" by the FBI, that he magically declassified them "with his mind", and that they "belonged to" him. And oh boy, where there a LOT of highly classified documents, many of them missing with only empty folders remaining. We still don't know the extent of the damage with all of that yet. But one thing is clear, Biden and Pence were a simple and case of disorganization with a very small number of documents. And keep in mind, Biden has been serving in public office for many decades, not just 4 years like Trump. So he has seen and touched a LOT of documents. Not really surprising that a few got mixed in with boxes and boxes of other papers at some point. And also the fact that they are cooperating with officials to make right. Trump never did try to cooperate. And the huge cache of 300+ super top secret compartmentalized SCI documents (and many empty folders with additional documents missing) that he had stolen and then hid (and moved to evade detection) were a completely different situation. In legal proceedings, its all about INTENT. And Trump's intent was criminal.

Wow! I went and checked that bundle of postcards and brochures I picked up while visiting the Statue of Liberty a few years back. OMG! Turns out there's some Top Secret and Classified Documents hidden in there! What should I do? I asked my neighbour - a nice Russian gentleman who works for their embassy. He was so understanding... he said he would be passing by the American embassy later and offered to drop those documents in for me. What a relief! Thanks Vlad.
I think the local libraries in my county are way better at keeping track of their books than the U.S. government is at keeping track of state secrets and classified documents.

Literally formed due to a song "proud of your boy", which is from Aladdin. Their initiation is to pretend to hit someone (a bunch of people hitting one person) while the person getting hit names of cereal brands/types. It's literally a fraternal group that happens to be conservative.
The 'library analogy' does not apply. Classified documents are generated throughout the administration and circulated to those that need to see them in the course of people's normal work. The requirement is, depending on the level of classification, that such documents are kept safe in accordance with their classification until such time as they are submitted to the National Archives and any copies destroyed. You do not go to the NA and take out a bunch of classified docs 'on loan'.

For the same reason that when you hear "classified documents" you automatically assume they're "SECRET" or "TOP SECRET" and not simply "CONFIDENTIAL". I'd wager a good bet most of these "classified documents" are simply CONFIDENTIAL documents (they are not state secrets, though if disclosed to the public, they might cause diplomatic/reputational harm to the government). Only in TFG's case thus far, have we been treated to the evidentiary images of *SECRET/CSI* or *TOP SECRET/CSI* documents scattered on the floor of his office.

While not excusing mishandling, there's long been concern about the phenomenon of "classification bloat", wherein more documents are classified than need to be in order to avoid oversight and more people are granted clearances than need them because it's regarded as a status symbol. I recall hearing over a decade ago that at least 2 million Americans held "secret" clearance, and those trends have only accelerated as the GWOT continues. That's insane on its face, and, when examined, is even more so.

A psychologist would see that as classic lying behavior and visible cognitive dissonance. Pence, who claims to be a "main of honor" which he is not (i.e., Trump's running mate = NOT honorable) had to sit there and lie directly on camera for a question he may not have been prepared to answer. Truth is, he probably took loads of documents home for review and reading, which I'm not actually against. After all, he obviously had security clearance to view those documents, was constantly surrounded by Secret Service and surveillance, and he eventually had to leave the White House to let Trump and Melania go to sleep.
And, unlike Trump, Pence probably needed to actually READ those documents to prep for some important meetings (instead of hoarding them like Trump as display trophies or espionage leverage to keep from going to prison). So yeah, its possible, like Biden, that out of all the hundreds or thousands of classified documents that he had to shuffle around for 4 years while in office, Pence or his staff likely missed a couple when they got mixed up with other papers. No big deal. Like Biden, Pence did the right thing and immediately self-reported, returned them, and requested a thorough search for any other misc classified documents just to make sure they got them all.
But Trump? No. He refused to return them for way more than a year, after multiple official NARA requests and after a subpoena, forcing the DOJ to send in the FBI to secure and recover the documents. Then came the long list of ridiculous excuses, including that they were "planted" by the FBI, that he magically declassified them "with his mind", and that they "belonged to" him. And oh boy, where there a LOT of highly classified documents, many of them missing with only empty folders remaining. We still don't know the extent of the damage with all of that yet.
But one thing is clear, Biden and Pence were a simple and case of disorganization with a very small number of documents. And keep in mind, Biden has been serving in public office for many decades, not just 4 years like Trump. So he has seen and touched a LOT of documents. Not really surprising that a few got mixed in with boxes and boxes of other papers at some point. And also the fact that they are cooperating with officials to make right. Trump never did try to cooperate. And the huge cache of 300+ super top secret compartmentalized SCI documents (and many empty folders with additional documents missing) that he had stolen and then hid (and moved to evade detection) were a completely different situation. In legal proceedings, its all about INTENT. And Trump's intent was criminal.

Wow! I went and checked that bundle of postcards and brochures I picked up while visiting the Statue of Liberty a few years back. OMG! Turns out there's some Top Secret and Classified Documents hidden in there! What should I do? I asked my neighbour - a nice Russian gentleman who works for their embassy. He was so understanding... he said he would be passing by the American embassy later and offered to drop those documents in for me. What a relief! Thanks Vlad.

The 'library analogy' does not apply. Classified documents are generated throughout the administration and circulated to those that need to see them in the course of people's normal work. The requirement is, depending on the level of classification, that such documents are kept safe in accordance with their classification until such time as they are submitted to the National Archives and any copies destroyed. You do not go to the NA and take out a bunch of classified docs 'on loan'.

For the same reason that when you hear "classified documents" you automatically assume they're "SECRET" or "TOP SECRET" and not simply "CONFIDENTIAL".
I'd wager a good bet most of these "classified documents" are simply CONFIDENTIAL documents (they are not state secrets, though if disclosed to the public, they might cause diplomatic/reputational harm to the government). Only in TFG's case thus far, have we been treated to the evidentiary images of *SECRET/CSI* or *TOP SECRET/CSI* documents scattered on the floor of his office.
