    We have the Royal Berkey and love it! It filters our town water beautifully. I also have two 55 gallon rain barrels that I use for back up emergency water supply and to water the garden during non-WROL situations. Love those as well. We are trying to move out of town, and once we do I will upgrade to a large tank for rain water collection for garden and keep the barrels for drinking water only. Love, love, love this type of filter system!!!

    Great video, Cody. We have been using a Berky Light for the last year or so, and really love it. We added the fluoride filters as well. Ours did not come with the cleaning pad or gauge, the instructions say to use food coloring to test that the filters are still working. One question I have for you is how do you suggest storing spare filters? I've heard that they can absorb moisture from the air and go bad. Also, these filters are not approved for sale in California and possibly other states.

    I think a more long term solution for someone in your position would be to install an elevated cistern to pump your well water up into and use gravity to bring the water into the building. We have one at a very remote site my company owns, and it fills from the gutters with rainwater, ours holds 1000 gal. We use a little 110v pump from HF with 3/4" garden hose fittings to raise the pressure but ours only sits 3' off the ground. If it sat 10-12' up on a platform you'd have plenty of head pressu

    @wb5mgr 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it gets old where you are, if you worry about freezing with a cistern, you could build one from scratch by forming up the tank from studs and plywood and pouring the tank from concrete 4"thick. Make it larger than what you need, then purchase a smaller plastic tank to drop down inside the concrete one and insulate underneath and around the inner tank with spray foam insulation. You could even circulate the water through a homemade solar hot water system in the winter to warm it.

    Another great vid, Cody. I've had a Berkey Lite for more than a year now and it has easily met my needs for drinking and cooking. I keep several bottles of filtered water in the fridge and it's a treat to drink from them. My water is from a well and tastes (and possibly is) terrible before filtering. My Berkey is a dual filtration system with the carbon filters taking out all of the really bad stuff and the ceramic filters taking out the chlorine, floride, and the like. Does AquaRain do both?

    And one last question... as I live on city water, do you know off hand of any good fluoride removal techniques besides RO. I have been looking but it is rather pricy and Berky's system replaces fluoride with aluminum or related metals. Thanks for all your time and effort for us all. By the way I have no idea how your channel draws so many ignorant childish comments, you do a great job.

    To my knowledge and research, distillation will remove/kill much of the bad stuff...but it also removes much of the good minerals. Your best bet would be to look into your local AO's pollution maps and plan accordingly. Our area, while very rural, is plagued by pollution from old industries and agriculture before all the regulations came into place. Much of our ground water has been contaminated...luckily my wife works for the city so I have some good inside info. Our city uses aeration.

  • @s.warren1732
    @s.warren1732 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can distill your water to remove everything from minerals, chlorine and even fluoride. While i can appreciate that it costs energy to do... it would be very interesting to see a comparison of costs between distilling your water and using a filter.

    Amen to your speech! That's good stuff. The Berkey filters don't seem to last very long for us. I have a set of four plus the fluoride filters. The black ones just don't seem to filter that long even with cleaning them periodically so I ordered a set of ProPur filters to try them out. Even with filtering out the rain barrel water.

  • @mryellow123

    Depends what you're dealing with.... Separating alcohol from water is fairly simple as there is 30 odd deg difference... The danger comes when you have something toxic which has a boiling point "close" to water, making accurate equipment more important. There aren't too many things close to water I'd have to worry about in any water around here....
    If you live in a Coal Seam Gas area this might be another story.

    I would agree with you on everything about preparing for future disasters, but only if you'd preface your point with environmental factors. I wouldn't predict a major disaster, or prioritize any preparation for one where I'm currently at, but I can see this being a very necessary thing for someone living in rural areas. In those situations, essentials are all very delicate parts of an 'ecosystem', where if one fails everything else will fail (read: death). But living in city environments, you can most certainly depend on others or as a collective on survival. How that'd perform in practice I'm unsure, but theoretically it's feasible.
    Now, as for this being a long term solution in case of total collapse of society, I have to mention that filters are not reusable and will stop functioning. In a indefinite survival situation, you want an infinite resource, never finite.
    I think prioritizing family safety and survival is great, but being too fatalistic about these things isn't very helpful. Spending all your savings on a water filter, even in a bad economy, shouldn't be high on everyones priority list if they're not dependent on everything working in their little 'ecostystem'. As I said, your priorities depend on environmental factors.

    I have been researching the Berkey, Aqua Rain, Katadyn, Pro Pure, and a host of other systems. What was it that lead you to this brand, and have you had any issue with leaks where the filters connect? I have heard a lot of complaints on the Berkys about filters breaking from the base but none from the Aqua Pure; I have a feeling that's probably user error. What method do you use to protect against viruses if any, "you might not have that issue in your location"

  • @wb5mgr
    @wb5mgr 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand what your saying, but unless concrete is a lot more where you live than where I live ($95y3) than it should not cost that much if you do it yourself. The tank walls are only about 4" thick on the one at work, and it's about 6' in diameter and 8-10' tall. I'll have to calculate the amount of concrete involved but can't be more than 4-5 yards max. I bet this could be built for about half what you think including the filter system and the inner tank. I don't have an inner tank cause

    "lower boiling point than water and so cannot be distilled away"
    If they have a lower boiling point then, by definition they boil off before the water. Just gotta not start collecting until you've reached the temp of your target. i.e. 100C for water

  • @Zerkbern

    Yes, I understand that distillation removes good minerals, but does it also remove VOCs? I can always add minerals back in w/ supplements my main concern would be that I not poison my family w/ chemical VOCs. Will distillation remove them or, since they ARE Volitile, do they merely evaporate and re-condense along with the water?

  • @CPLBSS88
    @CPLBSS88 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    ceramic filters will not remove EVERYTHING but it does remove quite a bit. VOC's are one things that cannot be removed with simple filters...but they are also not going to kill you over night.

    I wonder if this would work for my water. The water that comes from our point well makes us sick, kills cats, may of made our dog so sick we had to put him down. I had a bad allergic reaction too, my eyes glazed over and I was blind in one until I got allergy eye drops. We had one of those brita filters thought it was working then we switched to spring water within a week we felt so much better. No more eye drops and the cats are healthy. Right now we get our water from the filter machine at the store for $0.45 a gallon because the free spring dried up. I'd say it's about $200 per year total, so a year or two this would pay for itself.
