Just a few months myself... spoiler, the homestead ends up with a powerline to the grid... I saw a recent video where he talks about losing that would mean losing power. :) Funny to see this though. I guess I'll have to scroll even further back to see how everything came to be.
I just put this same project together for my 2 EU2000i's. We use to power the AC unit on our travel trailer. I had some issues locating the bulk head fittings locally, but managed to procure them at a truck/trailer hydraulic/air brake place. This system worked flawlessly. The quick connects worked great to seal fumes/spillage. Thanks, Cody !
I was so thrilled to find this gem! I was planning on setting up my generator this way because we just went a week w/o power and there were times when my “tradcon” wife had to fuel the gennies because I was gone.
I agree! Very nice set up for $2,000. I was blown away when you mentioned the price of the camper. Thanks for the video. Those little generators are great but they're still pricey.. Roughly 50% of the cost of this camper. I'm saving up for one of the comparable Yamaha generators and this video completely solves the problem of the fuel running out in the middle of the night. Ingenious idea Cody! Again.. Thanks for sharing your knowledge .. That problem is solved.
The nice thing about the Honda and Yamaha generators is they are quieter and more reliable than the more common and less expensive generator-in-a-steel-frame sold almost everywhere. The less expensive generators sound like a lawnmower running for hours, which they essentially are lawnmower engines, and this may account for their lesser reliability. Lawnmowers are not designed to be run for hours and hours at a time.
I ended up with an extended run tank that came with my used Honda EU2000i and I wanted to share the way it was connected because it is just an alternative way to do it that may serve some folks needs better than how Cody did his. The first difference is that all of the entry points for the fuel cans and the generator itself are right angle. The right angle elbow fitting in brass is nor hard to obtain but it does add a few more dollars to the cost of the connection set up. Using the elbow fittings avoids much of the strain on the tubing of coming straight up out of the fuel containers and the tank. The second difference is that all of the snap fittings faced the tank so that the fitting on the tank is the barb that snaps into the larger snap fitting. That ends up being helpful when you go to refill your fuel supply. More on that below. All of the hoses are swaged onto the fitting barbs but when making this up yourself you would use the worm gear hose clamp fittings; called airplane clamps in some places; in place of buying a rather expensive Swaging tool. The reason for applying the hose clamps is that it avoids depending on just the barb for a connection when dealing with flammable liquids. Keeping contaminants out of the fuel containers is important. You can buy extra barb fittings and cap or plug them to turn them into "blind caps" to prevent Foreign Object Damage (FOD). About refueling anyone taking a responsible position on refueling will tell you never to fuel a running engine that is fueled with a flammable liquid. Once an engine has been running long enough to come up to it's normal operating temperature there are surfaces on that engine which WILL ignite a Flammable liquid, such as Gasoline, on contact. In order to avoid the need to shut down the generator and allow it to cool prior to refueling, disconnect the extended run tank and remove it from close proximity to the running generator engine prior to refueling it. To make that possible you install to 1/4 turn fuel line valves just downstream of each of the 2 barbs which connect to the external tanks. You turn one external tank's line off, disconnect that line from that tank, and take the tank to a safe place to refuel it. Return with the filled tank, reconnect the hose barb and open the fuel line valve that it is threaded into. You have not disrupted the fuel flow to the engine even for a moment. Both external tanks require an air vent to avoid a vacuum in the tank that will prevent the fuel from flowing and cause the engine to stall. -- Tom Horne
Hey cody, i have spent quite a few cold winters in a trailer, and if you plan to i strongly suggest you build a small shelter outiside your front door, and put a woodstove in it, since you can get your own firewood this would make keeping warm easy, and it's a great place to keep large tools and stuff out of the way.
Excellent video!. i have been using this same gen for over 6 years. Not only for remote work, but as a backup gen for my home. The only thing i don't care for (and it's a VERY small thing) is it's not easy to drain the fuel system for storage. I managed to figure a way tho, and this machines virtues FAR outweigh any small, nit-picky inconveniences. Also, it IS a 2000i..so running ANY sensitive electronics are no problem due to it's modified sine wave. Thanks for the vids. I'll be watching
We live in a condo and I know what you mean. Condo's are just as bad as apartment living. The good thing is we bought it as a foreclosure for $23,500 right after the housing market crashed. Currently building our cabin in the woods too.
on my boat I have a primer bulb to prime the fuel system.... you should get one for your aux fuel system on your gen set... they have them in the boat stuff isle at walmart or bass pro...just a idea i had, im following your idea on my honda genset cause it has such a small tank as you mentioned, but im adding a primer bulb to prime the system once set up or after a refill... thanks for the videos.
Helps to set up a sceen tent outside one that can fit 4 good chairs in with a table. That comes in real handy when you are tight with space. Have a table set outside too. One where you have the old time pitcher and bowl. Remember people washed their hands this way for ages they shaved they did a lot there. You can save a lot of time allowing somebody to get ready outside.
I like what you are doing Cody. I will put in my two cents worth of advice. If your house sells and you are going to stay up there buy a 500 gallon propane tank and a large gas tank (like you would have in the back of your truck to fuel cat--it will be usefull later) I would hate to be short on fuel to cook and heat with in the dead of winter. If you skirt the trailer it will help with heating and pipes freezing. This is very doable. Have you looked at what frontier families lived in!
How do you vent the 5 gal containers? As fuel goes out, air must come in. Also how do you prime the supply hose from large containers to generator fuel tank?
I purchased two 2000's that connect to produce more amps (33.4 vs. 30) for slightly less money and with a dual feed auxiliary fuel tank - longer run time. The 2000 is also more economical overall in fuel to output for most applications.
I live in a suburbia with my dad and we actually use propane tanks like that to help heat our house, which has saved a lot of money. He can get the propane tanks for free at work.
That is a great genset, my dad has one...but it does have a duty cycle and needs to have the oil checked and changed every so many hours of run time. With that aux. fuel system you need to resist the temptation to run it 24/7..
Another Great Video , I spent around 20yrs in the RV bussiness . You might want to buy a 12 0r 18 gal marine tank and do the same set up . Its what I for an extra tank at home . As cold as its gonna get up ther I would sugest to isulate the bottom and build a small wall around it to block the wind and such .And a real good set of wooden steps !
Congrats on the new trailer. I have been keeping an eye on the Honda EU generators ever since I saw a review done by Analytical Survival. I really liked your increased gas tank capacity idea. Should give you hours or additional run time. Good luck on the OHP!!!
Ah, that's where Mr. gravity steps in! At first what you suggest sounds good, consider this. If the level in one container is lower than the other it requires more suction to lift the fluid to the top of the container, it's called 'suction head'. Therefore the fuel will flow from the container with more fuel which needs lower suction. Also the two containers are connected by the fuel line, even if not filled evenly, they will balance, providing they are sitting on ground at the same level, neat.
wow its amazing to see how much its changed at the wranglerstar homestead been watching for quite a while and just came back would you be willing todo a like overview of your homestead? also hows ur air ram pump going? :)
Northern Tool sells the long-run fuel lines and tank for the Honda 2000 and other Honda generators. Would get the Honda 2000 model that you can hook two of them together in parallel.
hopefully you are able to get alot of work done on site living on the location for a while... especially that garden!! alot of information in this video i will try to review again and take notes later... /// yeah, youre right about the goodness of your family, i wish my folks were as interested in my future as yours are...they wont buy or loan me cash for a tool shed to live in much less a trailer...they sold my grandfathers land also :( keep up the good works man!
I have tried the same setup at the race track, works great all day then during the night the gen. will stop. Problem is there is no fuel pump on the little gen, it is gravity fed. The sun will pressurize the tanks, at night the tanks will cool and create a vacuum and the fuel will not flow causing the engine to starve. To fix this, mount the cans HIGHER than the generator tip them over on there side and have vents in them.
Thought about this some more. I think a better way to have multiple fuel tanks is to have one hooked to another with the last one vented. So it'd be genset -> tank 1 -> tank 2, so that tank 2 empties into tank 1, and the genset will draw fuel from tank 1. Tank 2 will need to be vented to prevent a vacuum from building up and stopping fuel flow. Tank 1 should only get it's venting via the line to tank 2. Or, just go with a 5 gal gas tank and avoid the whole problem.
I guess as a practical matter both tanks would normally be filled equally full, but if one tank was filled less than the other then it would drain out first which would allow air into the fuel line.
an oldie, but goodie. another very helpful vid! hmmm, l wonder if there is clear plastic tube that is fuel rated, or, is the black fuel line the only option.
Have you run your Honda inverter 2000 watt generator for 8 or 10 hours using a small heater wall AC heater that is? Or an electric blanket or for anything that is a heat source that plugs in the 110 wall outlet? The reason I ask I was running my inverter generator with my heater on some but mostly running 8 hours a night running my electric blanket which is only one point for 4 amps Plus a fan for a generator box that was around 1.35 amps for a total of less than 3:00 amps and it died the generator did. I hear the inverter generators do not like heat sources like electric blankets, wall heaters crock pots things of that nature.
A few years after this video Honda actually came out with a kit for this exact build. Not sure if this model has it or not but you can now connect them in parallel with up to 4 giving you enough power to run an entire house. This generator is on my list of things to get - I'd really love to have one some day soon. I could easily chain this up to the tree out front and run an extension cord inside - doubt the association would like it much but in a SHTF type situation one must survive - I'd have a run of the place because most don't even know what a tool box is. This place would be empty they would all move out into govt FEMA camps - Pretty sad.
very nice set up,i think it would be the same if i hook a outboard motor tank with hose into the generator...you can even built a little pressure with the manual pump?
Living in a camper is not to bad. I have lived in my camper for almost a year now and its a 1973 20ft i bought with my tax return and i live next ot my sons place for now and i have to use water cans (nothing works inside) but the famaly has a 1/3rd ac in the mountians i am planning to move to if i can gain employment again / you can see a walk around of my camper in my uploads
Not sure if you've already considered this, but uscarbDOT com makes a propane conversion for that Honda generator. I was thinking about doing that with my Honda EU3000 so I don't have to worry about the gas getting gunky in storage. Thanks for the vid.
I'm saving up for a military surplus multifuel heater. It has these same or similar type of quick disconnect fittings. It uses jerry cans but the cans are mounted upside down on a tripod to allow for complete emptying. I like this though. Is the Honda a 2 cycle or 4 cycle?
Hey, about the toughest homes you can build on a homestead (or just about anywhere) are American Ingenuity Domes or Monolithic Domes. They don't even "blink" at an F5 tornado!
Just watched your "Old School" video on the Honda 2K. Good info. I am in my Ford Cargo Camper Van, in AZ now, with my 5 year old Harbor Freight $89. 1K Gen. running outside, still running strong. I would love to buy your Trailer from you. All Cash Deal ! I would also add My Grand Fathers Dividers to sweeten the deal. You showed a pair of Dividers once and were happy to have found them. My Grandfather's set are twice as big and in fantastic shape. Please let me know if your are interested in selling the Trailer when done with your kitchen.
I have recently built one of these but there is no noticeable vacuum. I have the filter reversed from yours I'll fix that. I am also going to fill the gen tank to the brim and also the fuel tank the same. I can detect zero pull from the gen.
Hy Cody. Just came across this old video, been following your vids now for a while. Question, does this honda e2000 have standart a build in feul lift pump? How did you made the vents on the two bottles ? Just a small hole? Grts to the famely! From holland.
That small fuel tank on the generator wasn't really a problem, was it? It was just another solution waiting to be found. 👍 It's interesting to be watching these early ones (it's 2018 now) and reading your book at the same time. It kind of brings the book to life.
Do you ever had a thougt about trying to convert a generator for ethanol and see if it would work with it? And perhaps making the ethanol yourself? In case of disaster it would be a life saver to know how to do.
Do you live near a town? Is social isolation a problem up there? If so have you found a solution to it? Thanks. I am contemplating moving out to a more rural area also but the possibility of being alone scares the you know what out of me.
You published this video 11 years ago. Still the best one out there for us new Honda generator owners.
i was just recommended this for some reason
wow what a flashback
i think
I’ve only been subbed for 6 years

Great idea on the fuel tanks. Thanks for the video.
@matt4270 yes just try picking one of those up by yourself
Great video and thanks for sharing all of the great tips!
Thanks for sharing brother

Thank you for showing the details for the aux fuel system you assembled. I'm going to do the same thing. Great information!
wow C your project is coming along great! 2k for that trailer is a deal and nice job on the extended gas can system. Blessings to you guys!
Thanks for making a video with the details on the parts.
I live in a suburbia with my dad and we actually use propane tanks like that to help heat our house, which has saved a lot of money. He can get the propane tanks for free at work.

You are living my dream sir! Best of luck to ya. I love the PNW
Really excited for you guys. Great info as always.
Exactly. just like a split tank on the Harley's. They have a vented cap with a crossover line.

BAMN another Classic I never found before, excellent.
I find it nice to see how you have grown over the years.
Great video, and a very ingenious way to fueling your generator. Keep up the good work. :-)
Nicely done
Congrats on the new trailer. I have been keeping an eye on the Honda EU generators ever since I saw a review done by Analytical Survival. I really liked your increased gas tank capacity idea. Should give you hours or additional run time. Good luck on the OHP!!!

Unfortunately when it is hot the fuel tank will expand and force the fuel out. This happened to me on a trip. Looking into a more sturdier aux tank.
@@mikep5336 What about a plastic boat tank for an outboard motor? Maybe 5 gallons or so.
The tanks are vented. No way its creating vacuum.
for the 2000 gen there is an option for adapting a butane kit that allows to run off your butane tanks
Propane in the US einstein
Thought about this some more. I think a better way to have multiple fuel tanks is to have one hooked to another with the last one vented. brilliant idea with the extra tanks
excellent video!
I guess as a practical matter both tanks would normally be filled equally full, but if one tank was filled less than the other then it would drain out first which would allow air into the fuel line.

hmmm, l wonder if there is clear plastic tube that is fuel rated, or, is the black fuel line the only option.
Not that I know of the clear plastic will turn real stiff but it will still work it's just not rated for fuel.
This man doesn't age. I'm sure i will die before him 🤣

neat idea with that generator
Honda makes the best generators and small engine machines. I'd go for a 3000 with an inverter if possible!
Great vid.

I have recently built one of these but there is no noticeable vacuum. I have the filter reversed from yours I'll fix that. I am also going to fill the gen tank to the brim and also the fuel tank the same. I can detect zero pull from the gen.

That small fuel tank on the generator wasn't really a problem, was it? It was just another solution waiting to be found. 👍

Do you ever had a thougt about trying to convert a generator for ethanol and see if it would work with it? And perhaps making the ethanol yourself?
In case of disaster it would be a life saver to know how to do.
$2000! I need to take some lessons from you on finding these kinds of deals :)
Do you live near a town? Is social isolation a problem up there? If so have you found a solution to it? Thanks. I am contemplating moving out to a more rural area also but the possibility of being alone scares the you know what out of me.
