I worked as a yard attendant and forklift driver at a local mom and pop hardware store as a teenager. We had the same structures for storing everything from pallets of salt, concrete, bricks and cinder blocks. If the same rack can support 8 full pallets of concrete this rack will laugh at the weight of that water tank when full. It could easily hold triple to quadruple that weight. If the foundation stays solid there is absolutely nothing to worry about this setup.
I was going to say the same thing whoever was complaining about any possible hazards is completely ridiculous. I work at Home Depot and and flying multiple pallets more than 3,200lbs each and this 500gal water barrel is maybe 4,175lbs by itself I say there’s room for expansion.
Water is only 8 lbs per gallon, so 2 whole tons on something that could hold ten times that. People are dumb. Especially people who don't know how things work. One of the reasons why most of us don't want to live by them.
I must say... what a beautiful place, looking at the mountain far away with the snow covered top... just wow, I would want to live like that, what a luxury.
It’s all about life choices. Lotta sacrifices to get there. Moved away from the city worked in the woods stocked away money no clubbing no chasing ladies good woman in your life. Recipe for success.
Mrs. Wranglerstar be reassured I installed and sold racking for a living a few years ago. Even the sungle stack racking is rated at 24,000+ lbs. He could store 6 full tanks that size safely. Have no fear, great videos and water tower. My wife and I look forward to all your videos. Keep them coming.
She has nothing to worry about. We used the Racks in our warehouse and supported computer systems which way much more. They are very sturdy. I really like your setup. Thanks for all your videos.
Well done Cody... This is awesome and I see that you did take care of the one issue that concerned you. You moved the front cross member up so that Mrs. Wranglerstar does not smack her head when she is working the compost boxes.
Awesome, I can just imagine the conversation at the dinner table about the safety sallies. If they were were around earlier in this country, we would not have such a great country. Cody, I love your channel so much and the your willingness to allow us to see your thinking, ingenuity and values.
Great job Cody on the rant, and let Mrs. W be reassured. If you want to really mess with folks simply refer to it as "pallet racking with a tuned-mass damper". Thanks for another excellent and unashamed video.
Cody , All i can say is well done mate, I have worked the land years ago and wish i would have known of the benefits of the Ram pump, Thank you for a very informative video, PS: never worry about the trolls here who know every bloody thing but know nothing, You do your way mate, looks flamin awesome to me . Cheers.
The people who usually comment are the ones who only find fault. Or the ones who totally agree. I enjoyed whole heartedly the intro to this video. Thank you so much for sharing your life experiences so that others can live a more fruitful life. I hate to say that TH-cam is the key to our economy getting better, but it is debatable. Excellent video!
She has nothing to worry about. We used the Racks in our warehouse and supported computer systems which way much more. They are very sturdy. I really like your setup.
I just went over and read comments that the Sally's left on the original video. My head hurts from trying to read them; they really need to remain quiet. Great work, Cody! Thank you for sharing.
Well said intro Cody, too many want to lend their "expertise" (mostly with good-intent) when it's not needed. Judging from your other projects you've shared with TH-cam viewers, you work both safely and responsibly. And you think things through, first. Having worked around those pallet racks for years, I can attest to their strength. I think you've built a clever, and economical alternative to a "stick-built" tower. Nice work.
your building is safe looks well built mate they dont know what they are talking about i have watched all your projects and as a wood and metal worker superb
'Safety Sally's' are all to often found in the can't do so they try to instruct group as experts(?) You have a good design, set well and solid, so don't let the armchair experts distract you. Love this video series, enjoy the way you solve the problems, well done. You have some usable water as you need it, and the fire rig refill is awesome. Keep it up.
Great video Cody. Completely agree with you on the rant. I've installed racks like those several times in warehouses and they will hold way more than the 8-9K lbs you're putting on it. Every time I watch your videos I just can't get over that view you have. Just awesome! Keep'em coming.
YOU TELL EM, I worked in warehouse using similar racking that was intended to hold MUCH more weight then that water tank. Cool set up by the way, your videos give me a lot of ideas for my own place. Keep up the good work!
I love your rant on the stability of the tower. Ive been working around that same racking system in various warehouse jobs and the weight they are made to take is truly amazing. Ive used racks to store pallets on top level that weight over 4000lbs and that's just one shelve lol. Awesome build!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA, Rosanne Barr breakdancing!! AWESOME! Well, I think you did an amazing job sir. Looks like a military grade built structure. I would sleep underneath that in a hammock. Keep up the great work Wranglerstars!
I'm obviously very late to this party, but that pallet racking looks to me like its designed to hold between 12 to 18 ton. Waaaaay more than a couple of water tanks.
If some people are so scared of the pallet rack falling on them tell them not to go to those big bulk store one of the one in there might fall on them. Nice project, love the video
Great job man. Sadly some people just have to hate on others to feel better as a person. The frame work of that tower could hold four of those tanks with no problem. You just keep doing what you do. Thanks for all the info. It's like I always say. Let's all learn from each other. Joe Tactical
In the past I owned & used the engineered shelving that you have built your tower from. It's perfectly safe for the load that you've placed on it. People these days are almost incapable of changing a light bulb without full msafety gear & 2 people to hold the ladder. I'm off-grid in the Alberta badlands near Drumheller & built my tower from treated 4x4's , it serves as both outdoor shower as well as watering the garden & trees. I love being off-grid & self-reliant lifestyle. All the best.
dont ya just love all the structural engineers and how they worry---you did a great job --dont worry at all---and your wife , what a trooper to help you boost that tank to the top--you two are a great team--
You did a great job. I owned a welding company and built hundreds of building and what you did is more then enough. I am thinking of putting up a Catch Basin tank for rain water off of our 30x60 barn,,which I should be over 900- 1000 gals from a ONE inch rainfall. I was thinking of cementing 2" pipe in the ground 4 ft deep and weld 4" channel on top,,but I think I like your idea better...looks sound and well designed. Love your view too,,here in south Texas we don't have that,,,,Jealous...;)
I worked in a warehouse and I am almost finished with my degree in construction engineering. I have seen this exact shelf system in action, and know enough about structural supports that i can tell you: This support structure WILL hold. Don't worry Ms.W.
I can't believe people would think that a tank that small couldn't be safely supported by a pallet rack. People obviously do not understand physics and/or have common sense. Keep on rocking it!
Very nice sir, thank you for taking the time to show us how you did the water tower. Now you could hook up a reverse osmosis system to it and have excellent drinking water from it to.
Hi there Mr Wranglerstar. First I would like to say, you have a great channel. It is the only TH-cam channel I watch consistently. Very inspiring. On the rack issue. I work in a grocery warehouse with this exact racking. We stack 2500# salt pallets in that rack, 3 bays high, not including the floor bay, without a problem. Ours are only single tube legs. I have seen them come down but it took a forklift running into a leg of a full rack. I dont think you have anything to worry about.
This is great ! Your way over built the frame, and nice job in hooking it to house giving it more stability. Pallet frames can hold thousands of pounds each!
I love the vid, you really motivate me. I have just finished my rain catch with a 300 gallon tank. Having my own water tank on that level would really put me ahead of the game. Thx.
I like it. I don't know who couldn't like it. plus, I like that it's off grid and something like this is coming here on our place, too. so, thanks! martina
You're awesome man - I found your channel on accident and can't get enough. I'm planning on moving to a homesteading style and I'm learning so much watching your thought leadership. Please don't stop because of the Sally's.
hello my friend i have been building stuff all my life i am a engenieer what you have there is very safe what you have there will do what you want it to do it will give you a lifetime of use have fun and stay safe you are a fine craftman keep up the good work what i have seen from your videos that frame is strudy . have a nice day my friend
I used to work in a warehouse and have seen racking identical to this being bumped into by forklift trucks, they are very solid! Even with a buckled leg or two they can still hold a lot of weight.
Awesome system, I never would have thought of this myself. Now I'm off to find info for water ram pump systems and maybe be able to do something like this for MY family. Thanks for the info Mr. Wranglerstar.
Great video. Thanks for sharing theprogress, and telling the Safety Sallies where to file their complaints. I would like to suggest switching to an all-drip, or all 'mist' system in those boxes. As you can see in the video, the spinnerheads are watering the sides of the boxes. They are meant for a larger circumference , with 'head-to-head' coverage. All the best, and keep up the great work. We are all learning a lot!
I work in a book depository warehouse. Our racks are very similar, but they are very old and don't look as sturdy and reinforced as yours. A pallet of books can with 1.5-2 tons depending. The racks are fully capable of holding 8 full pallets each with 2 more on the ground. Before you mentioned it, I was going to recommend tying it in to the house/shed to prevent wobble. You did a great job. Thx for the vids!
Sir your a smart man. You know its safe the smart peeps who looked at it know its safe. So who cares. Nice work brother plz keep up the good work. God Bless brother.
With you 100% on the racking. I worked in a warehouse for 4 years while I was in undergrad. Those are the heavy duty racks, as you pointed out the uprights are doubled. Just for your information, those will hold 27,000 pounds. You could place 4 of your 500 gallon tanks on them and still be OK. And just because they are rated for 27,000lbs does not mean they wont hold more. Some racks held pallets of steel stock, 40,000lbs total, for all 4 years I was there without incident.
I want to thank you for all I've learned. My dad was a farmer and I had great respect for his engineering, machanical, plumbing, electical and carpenter skills. But more than that, I had great respect for his ethics and values. I am proud to say I am his girl... and until my brothers came along, I was his 'son' and shadow. I learned all he was willing to teach me. Cody, you and my dad would have gotten along really well. I have missed him these 20 some years and have enjoyed watching you and the Mrs. W. Shes a sweetie! And must have her heart stop on occasion with the things that her man has to do. But that's part of Life. I do have one little bit of information for you. I am a farm girl. Married a city guy. But I subscribed to your channel after the second video I saw! I don't know if I've seen them all... but close. FYI: I'm not the only gal that watches you channel! But you only address the guys. :( Im okay with it- I want you to know, from a womans standpoint, you are living a refreshing lifestyle. One I thought died with my parents. I applaude the example you set. I pray for your family too. May God bless you. Your youtube friend in Nebr. Anita
love your opinion of the safety sallies. if we always took all the recommended precautions for a particular task, often we would look like niel armstrong on the moon.water tower looks great, and functions well. as usual, keep up the good work, and God bless. P.S. always work smarter, not harder.
1 small comment I loved the safety sally rant! Your right that beast is NOT going anywhere! Mrs Wranglerstar that set up is great it is well designed and well thought out. Those racks are designed to hold alot more then 2 tons. As to my 1 small suggestion. people talk about algae. add some snails ( aquarium snails. ) Here they are called "mystery snails" they will help keep the inside of the tank cleanish.
Tell the Safety Sally's to go into Home Depot and look at the free standing racks that are not double legs holding up floor tile and and other heavy supplies. You did a great Job.
From a structural steel designer's point of view, your on the right track. Those pallet stands are tough, and should be more than enough for your needs. In fact, you could put another 500 gallon tank on that platform without an issue. Only thing I would have done differently is sink the legs into the ground about 2 feet and filled with concrete. That would be overkill, but that stand would not move unless a bomb fell on it. Your work is an inspiration brother.
Hi Cody - As a fellow gardener, a couple of thoughts to further conserve your hard earned water. Water at the stems or even better at the roots roots of the plants instead of spraying it around over a larger surface, this will lower water loss through evaporation and also prevent against Tomato Blight and other problems. Water in the evening when temp is dropping not in the morning when temp is rising this will keep your soil from getting 'sun baked'. Great vidz and thanks for sharing.
The way he was talking i was expecting that tank to be 50 times that size... that small tank has no problem on that rack... May want to strap it down some more for more wind resiliency but that tank is perfectly fine!
I like your set up, I would put another one beside it and strap them together and double your supply that rack is very strong we use them at our warehouse.
NICE! Thank you for sharing! Also I really like how you incorporated measuring water flow and pressure reading into the video. It really helps to figure out what DIY systems are poor designs and what DIY systems are good designs! :)
Take a look at your local Home Depot and see how many pallets of mulch, gravel, riding lanwmoers, and concrete block are stacked up on this type of racking. I was a freight supervisor at Home Depot and I can assure you that this setup can literally hold TEN TIMES more weight then Cody will ever put on it.
The shelf system you have for the tower is rated to hold a lot more weight then you have on it. You are correct, there is minimum danger of collapse. It is the same rack system we use in manufacturing shops and load them with a lot more weight. With that said, the feet of the rack have holes in them that were intended to have anchor bolts locked in a concrete floor. But I see no problem with your set up. I would use it.
I didn't see your video prior to this so when you were talking about safety I was expecting to see the tank about 100 ft in the air. Boy was I surprised to see the reality! Based upon your psi it looks like 23 ft. to the water level.
I've been watching since Feb. of this year. I'm 62 and I admire the hell out of you. Your dad must be very proud. I don't consider you the type of person who would risk creating something that would harm your wife or son. When I watched the water tower segment, I too was thinking of tying into the barn. If it were me, I'd tie the legs together a couple feet off the ground (maybe they are & I missed it). Carry on, fear not. Hope the fire danger subsides (I'm in Colorado). Mac.
That if would be my main concern. Where I live, the ground would probably give a bit. This is a gravel pit with wood on top.
who cares thats his point. he already justified any weight issues.
I was going to say the same thing whoever was complaining about any possible hazards is completely ridiculous. I work at Home Depot and and flying multiple pallets more than 3,200lbs each and this 500gal water barrel is maybe 4,175lbs by itself I say there’s room for expansion.

What a stunning place to live.
You must smile every time you walk out your door.
What a brilliant set up
I love it, great time spent and every penny worth it.
She has nothing to worry about. We used the Racks in our warehouse and supported computer systems which way much more. They are very sturdy. I really like your setup. Thanks for all your videos.

That Water Tower is Great, It's not the way I would do it, but is constructed exactly the way it should be.Very safe.I admire your talent.
Awesome, I can just imagine the conversation at the dinner table about the safety sallies. If they were were around earlier in this country, we would not have such a great country. Cody, I love your channel so much and the your willingness to allow us to see your thinking, ingenuity and values.

Roseanne Bar break dancing, the funniest thing I've heard you say. Great job keep it up. I love your take on life.
the manufacture stated the load rating for this rack is 27,000 lbs so i'm good
Actually doubled up like that it should be even more that's way more then over built
Has it fallen on anyone’s head in 8 years? 🤪
YOU TELL EM, I worked in warehouse using similar racking that was intended to hold MUCH more weight then that water tank. Cool set up by the way, your videos give me a lot of ideas for my own place. Keep up the good work!

Keep up the great work Wranglerstars!
I'm obviously very late to this party, but that pallet racking looks to me like its designed to hold between 12 to 18 ton.
Waaaaay more than a couple of water tanks.

I have seen this exact shelf system in action, and know enough about structural supports that i can tell you:
This support structure WILL hold. Don't worry Ms.W.
Thank you!!!! Your simple explanation finally helped me convince my husband on doing this.
I think it’s hilarious when all the sudden half of the population becomes a structure engineer. To me it looks similar but beefier than a scaffold.
Thx.

Glad to see a young man, with his shit together, and his brain working.
Amazing view from your garden!
Awesome job!! I guess most of the people who are negative have never been in a warehouse and seen the loads that scaffolding is designed to hold.
Very nice set up. Looking forward to updates on the tower when you find a second 500 gallon tank.
We are all learning a lot!
cool water tower, looks pretty safe to me, and i have built a lot of things in my life, yours should last a long time, god bless.
As the season wears on, will have to give us a good vid on how you winterize/weatherize your great looking off grid water system. Good stuff!
I work in a book depository warehouse. Our racks are very similar, but they are very old and don't look as sturdy and reinforced as yours. A pallet of books can with 1.5-2 tons depending. Lol safety Sallys . Love it . Great video brother.
Thank for the tip. I'm going to do exactly as you say...
That view is wonderful. Oh and the water tower is great to.
Sir your a smart man. You know its safe the smart peeps who looked at it know its safe. So who cares. Nice work brother plz keep up the good work. God Bless brother.
Mr and Mrs w don't listen to some negative feeds that you have. you are good people keep the videos coming :) :)
I love your water tower. good job.
Thank you Pablo.
Wranglerstar I hate safety Sally's
Pablo Pérez ,,,
I did something like you have there many years ago and I think you did a great JOB kep up the good work
You background it’s beautiful, looks like heaven.
I really appreciate you taking the time to go through this. Awesome.
My pleasure!

that is amazing you did a great job, don't let anyone tell you different...
That’s a nice view!!! From Auburn, Alabama.
Loved your rant. Stupid has to be called out 24/7/365.
The property location looks stunning!!!

love your opinion of the safety sallies. if we always took all the recommended precautions for a particular task, often we would look like niel armstrong on the moon.water tower looks great, and functions well. as usual, keep up the good work, and God bless.
P.S. always work smarter, not harder.
Great video. Did similar project with two 55 gal drums on my place with rain water. Thanks
Ah, the energy to dispell the critiques of all the doubting Thomases on youtube. More power to you.
Tell the Safety Sally's to go into Home Depot and look at the free standing racks that are not double legs holding up floor tile and and other heavy supplies. You did a great Job.
Excellent budget water tower. Looks like it would support a second tank as well.
Roseanne Barr break dancing... LOL! I'm glad you spoke about the protectionists and their stifling attitudes. It was refreshing!
All that hard work and pays off too look at that wonderful view.
Excellent Job...I appreciate the video.
Great vidz and thanks for sharing.
looks like a very solid and safe build to me 😊
The way he was talking i was expecting that tank to be 50 times that size... that small tank has no problem on that rack... May want to strap it down some more for more wind resiliency but that tank is perfectly fine!
That Mount Shasta in the background? God's beauty to behold!
I like your set up, I would put another one beside it and strap them together and double your supply that rack is very strong we use them at our warehouse.
GREAT IDEA!!! i"m going to build one on my place! and YES! it will support the weight and it IS safe!! thanks for the videos!
Great job! Don't listen to the safety Nazis. I love your channel! Thank you sir for all you do. God bless.
Great, having been a fireman, your on the ball is so many ways
The shelf system you have for the tower is rated to hold a lot more weight then you have on it. You are correct, there is minimum danger of collapse. It is the same rack system we use in manufacturing shops and load them with a lot more weight. With that said, the feet of the rack have holes in them that were intended to have anchor bolts locked in a concrete floor.
But I see no problem with your set up. I would use it.
MOUNT RAINIER!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSS, I GOT IT!!!!!!
I KNEW THAT LOOK VERY FAMILIAR!!!!!
WE ALWAYS TRAVEL ACROSS SEATTLE BUT NEVER UP THE MOUNTAIN.
wrong mt adam
This is awesome ...GOD bless you!
the tower makes the building stronger
Mac.
That is a gorgeous view!!!
I think safety is important but dude, you build that pretty well, that is pretty safe.
Thanks Cody. This is my favorite channel on youtube.
