  • What a wonderful tribute brought to life through more modern Star Wars media and visuals (Jango is crying his heart out). I seriously have to get around to playing the original Battlefront 2 campaign one day and witness the original cutscenes (and order 66....)! Perhaps eventually on Twitch! It's always interesting to explore the perspective of The Clone Wars era as planned out by pre-Clone Wars show media. The expanded universe and some of George's first concepts for the time period were incredibly interesting! I've no doubt he'd approve of more modern entries (such as clone wars season 7) Hopefully we can get some clone wars and clone references in general in The Mandalorian in Season 2!

      BF2 2005's campaign was awesome. Continuity wise it doesn't work out as it was pre-chip and the battles it showed. It followed the 501st but also had nearly every major battle in the films while working with different Jedi, which we know isn't the case since they mainly follow Anakin's leadership and occasionally other Jedi too. Still a great perspective especially in 2005.

      @@TMoneySartwell A lot of guess work went into pre, The Clone Wars, material since the prequel's never elaborated on just why so many of the Clones went along with Order 66. Some where less the flattering to the Jedi as a result of trying to explain it, to the point of uncharacteristic vilification.
      Battlefront 2 was an excellent exemption, with Temuera Morrison playing a soldier resigned to a terrible task who later internalized his service to the Empire brilliantly.
      The chip was the best why to have gone since even in the Revenge of the Sith game they where implied to be acting under Manchurian Agent like, programming. Preserving the beloved relationships the Jedi and us had developed for them, without it being undermined as all been an act. Plus it makes sense Sideous would take no chances with such a method.

    Also, this version has changed a few sections. The part that shows Scarif is actually an asteroid world called Polis Massa in the game and it's also named "Birth Of The Rebellion". Also, in-between Knightfall and Prison Break, there are a few other missions this video cut out, such as Naboo, where the 501st is sent to assassinate Naboo's queen after she rebels against Palpatine, a mission to Mustafar to tie up loose ends and kill a surviving Separatist leader named Gizor Delso (a Geonosian), and a mission to Kamino to put down a Clone REBELLION. Here's the text for that one:
    Intro: Officially, there never was a "Clone rebellion" on Kamino. Unofficially, approximately three years after we were created, a detachment of the 501st was sent to Kamino to wipe out a force of Clones, that had been bred to take up arms against the Empire. Our mission commander, an expert on the inner workings of Kamino, was a young bounty hunter named, Boba Fett.
    Ending: The bounty hunter left after the mission was over. Said something about pursuing a smuggler on Tatooine. After the failed Kamino uprising, the Emperor felt that an army made of completely genetically identical soldiers, was too susceptible to corruption. Future troopers would be clones from a wide variety of templates. Though the 501st itself remained "pure", the rest of the Imperial armada gradually became more and more diverse. We never really got used to the new guys.

      I don't know how I feel about them changing such an important element of clones' betrayal so late. I mean what was it really like back then? Was is it simply the executives of star wars not liking the narrative of clones inherently hating the Jedi so they came up with chips which sort of feels like midway thru ish if you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong I like the whole chip storyline better but it seems kinda weird for them to straight up change it like that. Ideally you would want everything, all the plot elements, motives to bet set up before the first movie

    The important thing you need to know about this is that this took place before Disney bought the company and made it so that the clones went against their Jedi commanders because of chips inside their heads.
    So part of the reason why they turned against their Jedi commanders was because their sole loyalty was to the Republic itself, and the one in charge of the Republic. In this case, it was Palpatine. And they never questioned their orders. And another reason is that not a lot of Jedis were capable commanders and got a lot of good soldiers killed

    I actually felt like the new "chip" thing was more heartbreaking. Reason being that in the old way, the clones knew what was coming and were able to come to terms with it and/ or accept it (or be a deserter). However, if we assume they didn't know, they would have continued to forge their bonds with the Jedi commanders, in many cases befriending them, and at the very least seeing them as comrades. Then, when the time came, they were made to murder them. While the chip thing almost feels like a cop-out in comparison to the darker tone set before, it is at least to me, much more tragic and sad. Not to mention, it could act as a sort of message from Palpatine to the clones in the form of psychological trauma, that he was the one in charge, which would easily secure him pretty much the entire army without issue. Just interesting to think about.

    • @ChilupaKing
      @ChilupaKing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well, a lot of them were thrown under the rug. To most of the Clones, there was no reason to deny order 66. They were used by both sides, and only a handful of Jedi ACTUALLY cared about them. They didnt even have the right of citizenship ☹

      the "chips" kinda ruin the overall story. I get it, clone wars is a kids show, so they wanted the clones to develop good relationships with the jedi cuz yay, friendship. but the story the EVERYTHING sets up, is one where the jedi ultimately failed because they were flawed, and the main area in which they were flawed was their lack of compassion. this is everything from obi-wan calling anakin "another pathetic lifeform", to the jedi treating clones as droids, to the order forbidding attachment, to yoda's advice to anakin to "to let go of everything you fear to lose", to both yoda and obi-wan pushing and training luke to become a warrior with intent to kill his own father. Ultimately, the jedi are not redeemed, and the sith are not defeated, until Luke is able to choose compassion, love, and family over duty, fear, and hatred...and inspired Anakin to do the same. a world where many, if not most jedi were able to form attachments to the clones and showed compassion for them is not one where the jedi order had fallen to fear and hatred of the darkside, embracing dogma and hiding behind a political duty to the senate in place of a moral duty to the galaxy and the will of the force, driven by love and compassion for others.
      -
      Yeah, the "chips" are more tragic because it makes the jedi victims of the evil evil sith and doesn't it just suck when bad people do bad things to good people? but that just isn't the intended story. the intended story is bad things happening to a corrupt organization because they allowed bad things to happen. the clones being willing to turn on the jedi is meant to only be possible because the jedi had fallen long ago...to put it bluntly, the "chips" are sad sure, but they make the story more childish. ultimately, the jedi in current canon fail because they weren't smart or powerful enough. if they were just better at swinging lightsabers, or were able to figure out who palpatine was in time, then they wouldn't have been defeated. It isn't really the story that george lucas set up with his movies...but whatever, its canon now i guess.

    • @seandonntheg8433
      @seandonntheg8433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree, the chips are 100% a cop out of it being too dark, it would be one thing if it just mind controlled them until the order was done, but since we've seen in the bad batch that they become completely different, wholely obedient troopers that they've never been in the new canon before it just doesn't seem very tragic at all in comparison

    • @mitchellhayward6492
      @mitchellhayward6492 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to think that the chips were a safeguard, which were only activated and forced compliance in the clones who decided not to kill their Jedi - as opposed to the majority of clones who complied reluctantly, or gladly in some cases.
      As a few examples of what I mean
      1. The 501st on Coruscant never had their chips activated, let's say because Anakin was still leading them and they were commanded by the Chancellor not to attack him, Ahsoka wasn't around, and the 501st was being ordered to slaughter Jedi they didn't know.
      2. Bly and the handful of troops that were with him when they received Order 66 on the other hand had their chips activated because of their attachment and loyalty to Aayla Secura.
      3. Delta Squad did not have their chips activated because when they got the order, like for the entirety of the Republic Commando game - there were behind Separatist lines and there were no Jedi to be found.
      4. Ki-Adi Mundi's men did not have their chips activated when they received the order, because they loathed him.

    the thing is, that the closeness we feel between the jedi and their clones was something quite rare. Since we are almost always shown anakin obi-wan and ashoka, it easy to forget that generals like krell existed, and they were the majority in the grand army of the republic

      No in fact. Krell was a fallen Jedi who nothing but contempt for them and wanted to defect. Every other Jedi/Clone we see is either pretty amicable or friendly. I can imagine some having a more business like dynamic, but anything like Krell would be uncharacteristic.
      A Kota from Force Unleashed type scenario, where one doesn't command any on moral principal against the ethics of a Clone Army, but still respecting them as people would be the worst a true Jedi would act in my mind.

Adds more to the emotional impact. And no matter which version of starwars you like, the clones always knew on some level their original purpose. In canon, when Fives and Tup are dying, they talk about the nightmare being over, they're talking about order 66, and being thankful they don't have to carry it out.

    I can actually believe that it works if some of the clones were aware that the various Orders including Order 66 existed, that some of the higher ranking Clones were aware of the plan, especially those that came to hate the Jedi on their own. That the chips were to ensure obedience for those whose obedience could not be ensured.
    And yeah, I would've moved the cell block chapter to before the Yavin retaliation mission, but since it's assumed that it's an informal interview or journal, it makes sense that an event or two is out of order for the purpose of the conversation.

So it’s probably very necessary when you have more than one Jedi General commanding them.

And I assumed that it was Cody who was telling this story. Also, in the comments section of one video of this compilation Gaxelle (I think it's one that uses the original game's footage, not a tribute version like what you've watched in this video), there is an additional conclusion bit that someone created which finishes off the Original Trilogy by doing a 501st Journal Entry for Endor Space and Endor which ends with the second Death Star being destroyed and the Clones/Stormtroopers surrenduring.

    The common thought among these comments is that the Clones knew that they were going to betray the jedi. I think we have it all wrong, from what's been said they had 150 Emergency Orders to follow if given the go. Eliminating the Jedi is but one of them that if it was issued, they would execute without hesitation. Palpatine would not tell them that he would be using it, and... why would he? Too many lips and idle conversation ruins it all. The only thing they knew is that if the Order came down from the top, they would do it. From the sounds of it, the Order wasn't a secret, but the conflict of interest of a Sith Lord being the one who could and would want to issue it was. In this case its Ironic, the Jedi had sealed their own fate from the start.

  • @RobPaulson88

    I always sort of preferred them not having a chip, they followed an order that they were given as “good soldiers” do, it made it more powerful in my eyes. Plus if they believed the Jedi had betrayed who is basically the president, they would know they have to do it.
    In the legends continuity, many defected, which I know a lot of people know but it was interesting to me.

This is the view of a clone who's chip is still active, he has regret, resentment, but he can barely express what he really feels. and even if this was before the whole chip thing, it still fits perfectly because you can tell in some fashion, they have respect for the jedi.. but also hate them. they call wookies mighty and beautiful, and also "walking carpets".. you can really feel the inner struggle they fight everyday without knowing, like rex was when order 66 came down.

Since the Clone Wars CGI cartoon didn't air on cartoon networks at the time. So it's not surprising there would be some contradictions in this compared to today's Star Wars lore.
