  • "Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone"... The Seven Dwarven Rings of Power manifested abilities within their wielders differently than the other thirteen greater rings of power did in Middle-Earth. Thank you all so much for watching, I hope you all enjoyed it! Let me know your thoughts on the Dwarven Rings! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    Due to the dwarves not being creations of melkor nor Eru, they cannot be seduced by his influence directly nor broken in will. They are truly unique creations of Eule and a wildcard in many battles.

      The Dwarves couldn't be controlled by the rings because Aulë specifically made them that way:
      "they ill endure the domination of others, and the thoughts of their hearts are hard to fathom, nor can they be turned to shadows." - The Silmarillion.

    • @Lil.Grandpa
      @Lil.Grandpa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      While Aule created their shells, Eru gave them their souls. Aule crafted them with the idea that they were going to inhabit a death world with Melkor in it. To say Aule created them is a bit wrong, he only shaped their base form.

    • @AlphaZaku
      @AlphaZaku 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Zaners You're arguing semantics. Aulë created their biological forms while Eru finished the job by granting them souls. But the characteristics that prevented their domination by the Rings stems solely from Aulë's designs.

    I was introduced to LOTR over 40 years ago, and it's taken me this long to click about the significance of having seven dwarf lords. Seven Dwarves. I remember reading that JRRT HATED the Disney Snow White cartoon, so perhaps there's a subtext of "Now, this is what the Seven Dwarves should be like, not those... things."

    Well done! I sometimes feel the dwarves better represent humans in Tolkien's world more than Man actually did. And I enjoy you touched on the inner turmoil amongst dwarves. This is often overlooked and part of their downfall. That and the few dwarrowdames to exist. You mentioning the rings possibly lost in the rubble of Mordor really intrigued me though. I never considered whether people came later to loot amongst the rubble. While I am sure the lands were guarded, I think it's no secret some may have snuck through. I can't imagine a thief with a whole lot of patience and time on their hands could find amongst the rubble.

    • @gargoyles9999
      @gargoyles9999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CrownMe13 the ring appears to basically stop aging when one possesses it, bilbo barely aged until he gave up the ring and then started aging again. Also he had the ring for so long that he mutated and his new form may have adapted that trait, slower aging by default.

    How exactly do you think the Rings helped to amass wealth?

    • @MenoftheWest
      @MenoftheWest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Good question! Perhaps it helped the Dwarves find certain materials or more of them.

    • @JoaoPedro-qp9cw
      @JoaoPedro-qp9cw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Men of the West I remind reading a very good theory somewhere, about the presence of the "Morgoth Element" in the materials of Arda. It stated that gold(officially noted as more corrupted than silver for example) was specially "gifted" with said element, and that this was what attracted dragons to it: they could become more powerful by amassing wealth and therefore Morgoth Element. Maybe the rings helped to track this element and inspire the desire of it in others(so they were helpful in commercial dealings).

    • @briana208
      @briana208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      João Pedro ive envisioned it changing the dwarves to be more posessive of their valuables, as well as more focused on the material accumulation instead of the equitable dispersion/utility of the wealth. Less trading and more hoarding, more personal defenses instead of neighbor trust? But its open ended 4 sure!

      Never really delved into it, but I imagined that it helped them in locating ores and other such things undergound
      In other words: dwarf kings could use the rings to know, where to dig in order to find something shiny

  • @MountainFisher

    I always liked the dwarves after I read the Hobbit.That story showed the good and bad that they could be, but in the end like you said Yoystan valor and honor won out. Kind of what we all want to see, but often it doesn't happen in our world, the honor and valor we find in the Legendarium is sorely missing all around us. It is the reason we all want to go to Middle Earth, or in my case Valinor, I'm old and tired of the struggle and decline.

    I suspect that if you had a large enough host and scoured the ruins of Barad Dur for long enough and with the skills of an archaeologist, you would find the rings. Probably those of the Nine and many other treasures, too. They are probably bereft of any powers that they once held, but they would be good for a museum or memorial to those who died during the long fight against Sauron. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    No, I think the one ring can be destroyed by dragonfire. Gandalf at least states so in the Fellowship, he mentions that no more dragons are to be found in middle earth and that the threat they pose to Sauron is the reason why.

    I asked this question on Geekzone as well but as I love both channels I submit it to you both.
    I have been an avid fan of your videos since I discovered them on TH-cam. I am no Lore Master, merely a savant; but I have two questions regarding the rings of power.
    1. When Gandalf was captured by Saruman, was he wearing the Elven ring of Fire? If so, why didn't Saruman take it?
    2. In appendix A of Lord of the Rings, chapter 3 'Durin's Folk', page 1051(of my edition) it says: "The only power over them that the Rings wielded was to inflame their hearts with greed of gold and precious things, so that if they lacked them all other things seemed profitless, and they were filled with wrath and desire for vengeance on all who deprived them. But they were made from their beginning of a kind to resist most steadfastly any domination. Though they could be slain or broken, they could not be reduced to shadows enslaved to another will; and for the same reason their lives were not affected by any Ring, to live either longer or shorter because of it. " So why couldn't a dwarf be a ring bearer of the one ring if they were indeed resistant to its overall power? From this it would appear that the dwarf was indeed made as a better ring bearer than a hobbit. It would also seem possible from this quote that the dwarfs like Tom Bombadil were immune from the power of the rings of power overall intent.

  • @deejayxcrypt
    @deejayxcrypt ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a thought:
    I don’t remember this for sure but aren’t the dwarves in the world of Tolkien almost literally “made of the hardiness of Arda itself”, meaning the rock, and other sturdy things?
    Can’t say that the Elves relate to trees in any ways as much. Trees live long, yes, but rocks “live” a lot longer. The term “Wood Elves” is mostly just “Elves living in the Woods”.

    You lowkey should make a video of you reading part of the story... You seem to have the regal voice for it. A dash more of base and seriousness and you could make a craft of it. Your commontary is stellar and your research delightful.

    The dwarven rings sauron retrieved were among the rings he gave to the kings of men.... All the rings were originally meant for the elves but they refused to wear them. The elves kept three so he tried to enslave the dwarfs with the rest but they refused to wear them too. When wearing them, all the ring bearers became aware of saurons presence the moment he put his on and he could see and hear everything they did, even read their minds. So the three remaining elven rings were hidden away while sauron was still in middle earth. The kings of men were his third resort. Its a misconception that he made the 3, 7 and 9. There were only 16 rings all up not 19

    I do recall them saying in the books that the One Ring could be destroyed by dragon's fire. The only problem is there were no more dragons.

    Nice job on the dwarves rings
    But that’s also how Sam Could get to his friend the orcs and forget the other Bad guys names
    Castle where everybody was dead because they had the other dwarf rings there which causes greed.
    Which caused him to fight against each other and kill them selves

    Just a point of order that is sometimes overlooked: The 7 rings were not forged to be wielded by dwarves nor intended for them. They were rings of power made by elves for elvish reasons, but Sauron captured them and gave them to the dwarves for his own purposes. The same with the 9. The powers of these great rings then shaped themselves to the character of their owners, but in another owner's hands would have shaped themselves differently. If they had later been worn by other people, they would have adapted themselves to the traits of those people.
    We see this trait of a great ring shaping itself to the owner in both Gollum's use of the one ring for pure stealth, and in how it futilely tried to tempt Samwise into being "the mighty gardener." The great rings enhanced what was already inherent in their wearer, rather than having any particular attitude of their own, other than generalized aggrandizement. The 3 elf rings, on the other hand, seemed to be imbued with a particular elemental affinity, which was Celebrimbor's take on the issue. He seems to have wanted rings that were a more guided than just wild ambition.
    If you think about it logically, the other 16 great rings were all of a kind, so if more of them had been retained by the elves, there would be more elf-rings, etc. What made the 3 "elf-rings" different is that Celebrimbor made them secretly on the side so that Sauron never knew of them. This also means Sauron must have gotten hold of the other 16 great rings and distributed them before the poem about them was written. When he wrote "One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them..." etc on his ring, he only knew of the ones he had helped make.
    The curious result of all this is that the "One ring to rule them all..." etc inscription was written first on One Ring as a catchall phrase, and the poem we all know about how many rings ended up with which people was a later writing, from one who knew which rings had finally ended up with whom. Personally, I nominate Glorfindel as the author of that full poem, because he had both the vision to perceive it, and just that kind of sense of humor.
    PS: For obscure reasons, there could have been 1 more great ring made, and it could have prevented Sauron's ring from ruling the others. In fact, if that 20th ring was made before his, Sauron could not have made his ring rule the others, but it might have actually healed his madness to make it. Such a fine edge!

    The one ring could be destroyed with dragon fire, they talk about it in the council of Elrond in the books. But by then there were no dragons left to melt it down that the council knew of

    Between you and Arachir Galudirithon, I've got my two main sources for all kinds of Lord of the Rings lore. Keep up the good work, brother!
    And the one dislike of this video is from Sauron himself. Still salty about not being able to corrupt the dwarves in the way he wanted to, I'm guessing. :P

    I prefer the idea that the rings actually allowed the dwarves to literally Breed wealth. Invisibility to dwarves would be pointless, they Dug for wealth and were not stealthy at all. The ultimate goal of the rings were to instill evil and gold possession does that to dwarves. And everyone else (battle of five armies). If gold is itself dark, than increasing it alone would be an evil goal achieved - and such a power would go a long way to swaying dwarves to your cause.

    I seem to remember a passage where Gandalf is discussing Sauruman. He says that Saruman was wearing a ring.
    Could it have been one of the Seven?
    Or was it perhaps of his own forging and, if so, did it fail in the fall of the One Ring? If not then there is a ring of power, admittedly a minor one, in the Shire.

    I always imagined that the dragon sickness, which it said Thorin's line was suscepptible to, was a symptone of their ring of power who had been passed down the line, to a point where it's effects remained in the family even after Sauron had reclaimed the ring.
